'Avengers' director Joss Whedon wants to make a female Batman movie

February 1, 2015

Director Joss Whedon made some comments about sexism in Hollywood last summer while speaking to the press on the set of his upcoming movie Avengers: Age of Ultron. Those comments were just published this past week, and Whedon gave BuzzFeed an exclusive interview to clarify some of his remarks. During that interview, Whedon said that if he wasn't doing another Avengers movie, he'd like to do a "female Batman" movie. Here's his full comment:

I will say that when I was thinking about, Well, if I wasn’t going to do Avengers 2, what would I want to do? — of course the first thing I thought of was “turn-of-the-century female Batman.” Not Batman actually. But, you know, something cool. One person. Can’t stress that enough. Movie about one person — not a team, not 10, just one. But [I would] do a nice sort of hard action movie that combined all my favorite things. Something that would be the love child of Sam Fuller and Edward Gorey. You know, I’ve had many thoughts since then. Oh, I could do this! Oh, I could do that! But it is my instinct to want to tell those stories.

Whedon is a huge Batman fan, and said in 2013 that if he could direct any superhero movie that it would be Batman. I'm not sure how a female Batman movie would work... would that just be Batwoman? Would you like to see the Avengers director get a crack at a Batman movie someday? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.

You've obviously never read Astonishing X Men. It's one of the greatest X Men runs in history written by Joss Weadon and penciled by John Cassidy. I assure you the story is far from "campy childish writing". Age of Ultron doesn't look remotely campy

Batman Forever. Green Lantern. Catwoman. Superman III and IV (and Returns, just cause). And the travesty that was Man of Steel. I think the DCU has PLENTY of it's own childish, campy writing to worry about (and it's supposed to be the more serious of the two).

If "Man of Steel" is childish then the entire MCU could be classified in the same age group as "Mia and Me" or "Atomic Betty".

Marvel is childish as in "5-year-old kid who doesn't think anything is impossible." Man of Steel is childish as in "5-year-old kid who pulls all of the heads of Barbies and only builds things to destroy them."
Both arguably childish. Both arguably enjoyable. If you enjoy watching things be destroyed for two-and-a-half hours, then please, continue to sing the praises of Man of Steel (and Transformers and all the other action movies that fit into that category).

No, no, no, no, no. I'm sorry but this guy is a mediocre director at best. The first Avengers is one of the most overrated pieces of sh1t ever. Avengers was funny, but not epic and the action was very mediocre, no intimidating villain, no real threat, weak music score, weak plots, weak dialogue and horrible cinematography. He can't do Batman or a Batwoman justice, stop making superhero movies. Oh wait, he doesn't even make superhero movies, they're comedies.

Amen. The only reason Avengers did so well was because of the culmination of all the characters. The story itself had no depth whatsoever.

That'd be stupid. There is a reason that Batman and Batwoman/Batgirl are different. If he wants to change a character to a woman then make it Thor. At least that'd be canon.

So he wants to do a female Batman movie? Good on him, that's what Batgirl/woman are there for, he doesn't need to turn Bruce into a woman to make it because that'd just be silly when you have these other characters you could use.

So Toy Story wasn't a well directed film? Because Joss directed that and last time I checked on WatchMojo, Toy Story was voted the greatest animated film of all time. He also has written one of my favorite X Men stories of all time too. So, I'd definitely give him the benefit of the doubt.

Joss Whedon actually helped with the screenplay. John Lasseter (current Chief Creative Officer over both Pixar and Disney animation films) directed Toy Story (information found on Wikipedia).
But I understand your point that Joss does his best to bring strong content on the screen, no matter the medium (television, feature film, live action, animation).

Wheddon was a television director. It seems he knows only two shots: the medium shot and the american shot. He is extremely static. The scenes performed by CGI save most of the scenes shoted with the camera of this man.

      Bad example.
Budget: $132M vs Box Office: $591M
      Rotten Tomatoes: 74% (Fresh)
Metacritic: 73/100 (which is very good!)
Any which way you look at it it, War of the Worlds is a good film for most people.
The movie has got bad street-cred on the internet. Why? Who knows.

Lol and if a male Batman ever truly existed as soon as he got a cold he would act like the world has ended (there's a reason women call it the man flu with a wink of the eye and a smile when talking about their sick hubbies) then spend half of the day in his Batcave staring at a broken Batmobile instead of fixing it then bitch and moan at Alfred that he's had a hard day at work and just wants to sit down and have a cold beer and watch a game.

Man flu is real, the only people who discredit it are women. At least a male batman wouldn't turn into a crazy person once a month or get jealous over an enemy's nicer costume and ring Alfred crying. Don't even get me started on her trying to drive the batmobile.

Let's be real, most of the greatest inventors, scientists, athletes, fighters, political leaders, and real world crime fighters have all been men. Really he can't fix the batmobile? If Batman was a woman she would need a mechanic, bodyguard, computer technician, and a fat best friend at her side 24/7.

OK people one I was joking as I assumed the OP was, two both sexes have their flaws and their strengths. Men could not exist without women just as women could not exist without men.
Lastly if you guys feel the need to react like this just because a woman says something slightly off colour (even though I was joking) I feel for your girlfriends or wives. Get a grip, seriously.

And without women men wouldn't get to eat cupcakes or have smooth pants. I personally can not wait for female batman!

I love this site, visit daily, but Chris, your headline is beneath the normal quality of your site. It actually *is* clickbait as someone points out below, because the part that really sucks people in actually isn't true. When the quote you post from Whedon contains "not Batman actually", it is disingenuous to make your headline imply the opposite, even if it is plucked from his own words, because it ignores the resolution of his comments.
Only pointing this out because you guys usually are better, and I want you to stay that way. I'm selfish like that :-)
As for Whedon doing a Batman film, I think he would actually be the best choice if WB ever greenlights a serious adaptation of some of the Snyder/Capullo comics. There is humor there amidst the madness, and I think he could handle the character subtlety well.

I have no need to calm down. I think my comments do a good job of showing my general approval of the site while registering an opinion. People do get outraged about the stupidest things, but it is a far greater problem that people register any form of disagreement as outrage. I suspect most folks would have trouble interpreting my comments as you have here.
You're certainly welcome to disagree with my assessment of the headline, of course, but it would be better for us both if you stick to addressing my actual points instead of trying to shut them down by labeling them "outrage".

Let me reply to your points then. I think the points you are making about the title of a random article are stupid... I think the word stupid does a good job of showing my general approval of your thoughts on this subject.
I think your so called disagreements are also stupid as this is a news website and the titles that are placed on articles are designed to make people wonder what the article is about and want to click on them and in turn read said articles.
And yes I certainly do disagree with your pointless assessment of one single article title... because as I said earlier... it is stupid. I suggested that you calm down because Chris does a great job with this website and your response to this article complaining about the wording of a title is very outrageous.
It seems like you frequent this site and read most of the articles, so you were probably going to read this article regardless if it had a (as you say) "click bait title" or some other title the seemed to align with your general approval of this site.

I respect your opinion, and the winsome manner with which you share it :-)
As for clunk, I was purely highlighting the problem (as I saw it) and not a solution. I agree that trying to work the qualifier in would have been awkward. But I still feel like the chosen headline is misleading, and that's my main issue with it. People expect one thing and come in with guns blazing, criticizing Whedon for an idea he does not actually hold. Those commenters are equally responsible for not reading the article before spewing, but the headline is like catnip for those sorts of folks.
