'The Batman' script is ready, and Warner Bros. and Ben Affleck are "very happy" with it

A report from Forbes spread around the internet the last couple of days, which said that The Batman script would receive a major rewrite, or even be started over from scratch. Now we're hearing a different side to that story...

I reached out to Justin Kroll, the Variety reporter who broke the news about Ben Affleck not directing The Batman. He told me that a new script for The Batman was turned in this month (presumably the one that Chris Terrio rewrote), and that everyone at Warner Bros., including President and Chief Content Officer Toby Emmerich and Ben Affleck are "very happy" with it!

Specifics on The Batman are still up in the air. It doesn't have a release date, and it may not start shooting this summer as previously planned. They still need a director as well. But we finally have a script that Ben Affleck is happy with. That was something that he constantly talked about in interviews over the last few months. Hopefully with that in place, more good news starts rolling in soon.

I seriously don't understand the bad rap this movie is getting. And just like all the other DC movies, it's coming under fire even before production. What gives?

    Exactly. I'm confused at the confusion..... You hear multiple directors leaving, major rewrites going on and dysfunction behind the scenes. I don't get how that can earn anything BUT a bad rap. That's not GOOD news....
    If the DCEU has been doing fine all this time and this was the FIRST time you heard about a film doing major rewrites that's fine. Most films do rewrites, this isn't simply about that. It's MULTIPLE compounding problems.

        It really sucks because there are people who aren't that at all. I love the Marvel movies (but I'm a DC fan from day 1) and I loved Man of Steel and was behind WB/DC when they made their big announcement, I was all in. I did not like BvS though, but I didn't let that color my anticipation for SS.... then I didn't like that film either. I can't just stick my head in the sound and pretend like everything is okay. Calling it like you see it doesn't mean you're negative or a hater. I'm so tired of that perception.

        Dude, couldn't agree more! Unfortunately, they don't see these things as problems and see them as "typical". Most of them have very little understanding of how movies work, and think things like multiple re-writes and writers, and directors dropping left and right are not bad signs. They can work out, but it's definitely not a good sign.
        And yes, you are completely branded as a hater just because you actually worry and want this universe to take off instead of grasping and clawing... Oh well, it is fun at times when they desperately reach for arguments as to why these movies are "masterpieces".

        Yup. It's sad though because the fans calling DC out on their shit and what they honestly don't like want these films to do well and to be good just as much as the people that love them. Don't you think us DC fans want to love these films as much as you guys?? Of course we do. But we don't. We wouldn't even be on these forums talking about this if we didn't care.
        It is pretty interesting to see how far these people will stretch lol. But it's also very mind boggling.

        Funny thing is MOS was still a better film than over half the overrated Marvel fluff films. Hulk....both Thor films, Antman....IM2 and IM3, AOU and even Dr Strange.....overrated.

        Have no idea why, but they like those jokes of MCU movies. They literally are live-action cartoons (which is fine, but don't pretend they're anything but), they don't take risks, they all rely on the same exact formulas, carry corny one-liners throughout ... yet they are "cinema masterpieces." Give me a break. Like you said, "Man of Steel" was better on so many different levels than half of their films, and 'BvS' is a true achievement. Sorry the movies took the characters seriously, sorry they didn't contain jokes every 2 and half minutes, sorry they were "dark." Maybe, just maybe, they set out to be more than just an average superhero flick that the Disney machine churns out.

      well to be fair, and what s honestly sad about is, the folks behind BvS genuinely believed they were making something really special that people would absolutely love. WB had a TON of confidence in the movie, which is why when it got slammed by critics and many audience members, everyone involved with that film was kind of in shock. They really werent expecting that at all

        ive never heard of a movie other than the ones you have mentioned getting embargos a MONTH early. JOhn Wick and Lego Batman, too great movies with overwhelming positive critical reception had embargo's released the week they came out.

        That's ridiculous about that "month embargo." And 'BvS' and 'SS' were released for critic-review the Sunday/Monday before it came out, the same time generally all movies are released for the critics. They did have complete faith in it, and the backlash definitely took them for a shock. I still think it's ridiculous because it was praised for so many things, but slammed because of a "dark tone, and villains motives." And it was accepted by the majority of audience members -- 64% theatrical, 82% UE. There's just a minority who are very vocal about how horrible it is, that it clouds public perception. But whatever ... I just wanted to say about when they were reviewed, I remember being at my computer on a Sunday night reading the first negative review. Anyways, good day.

        Yeah, but it's pretty sh1tty that they're sacrificing their artistic integrity in making such changes to 'JL.' I hope that they were able to find a middle ground where the film can still be serious, while incorporating small elements to make it more appealing to "general audiences." If it turns into a sh1t-ass "Avengers" with a corny joke every two minutes and fight-scenes with banter and gags that make it hold zero seriousness, then I'll be pretty upset. Hopefully they'll find a middle ground in their approach to the style. It's sad that 'BvS' was "too complicated" for some to understand -- of course that's not what they say ... but 'tis the truth.

        I hear ya. I don't think it will as over the top cheesy jokes everywhere like Avengers. I think there will be a bit more fun dialogue between the team of course and more light hearted than BvS and not as dark. However, I do think Superman coming back will have emotion as well as the story revolving the mother boxes and Darkseids past...and I think the return of Supes will be epic and give the audience goosebumps. My educated guess. Story just needs to be tighter along with the editing than BvS also.

Anyways, Batman is pretty much the only comic book character that can reach a billion at the BO in a standalone movie if its really good. If The Batman delivers, it will be a monstrous hit considering how absurdly popular Batman is these days. The intrigue factor is going to be through the roof with Deathtroke and potentially the joker as well. If it came out during the summer, I would even venture to say that it could "potentially" get close to Avengers numbers at the BO. Bot TDK and TDKR made a little over a billion. With the Batman craze and the hype surrounding Ben Affleck's Batman right now, just imagine how much money it could make if it ends up being really good and if it releases at just the right time.       Who's pretending? And is humanity of a shared mind? People disagree all the time. And I completely disagree with you here. While I can see that Marvel has put a lot of effort into their movies, apart from Iron Man 1, Ant Man and just that one group scene from Civil War, the rest are pretty forgettable predicable Hollywood movies. While there're certain things I might've changed in BvS, it pandered to pretty much everything I could've wanted in a cinematic version of the comic characters - and even though Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight had preceded it, I felt BvS managed to be even more faithful to the comic interpretation of the characters than Nolan's. That's no small feat. As for SS, it was a colorful and fun movie that could've been slightly better with a different villain, but it doesn't take away from the fact that it made people interested in these otherwise less-known DC characters, and critics aside, has been nominated for an Oscar even. Definitely not a razzie worthy movie. Ultimately, DC has done things differently, each movie is a different style and flavor. And because of that, their movies have become a lot more memorable than what people have coined "the Marvel formula" because that's pretty much what it is. All flims blending into one typical style/plot. Watch one and you've seen them all!

  Because production is consistently a mess for this movie and for several other DCEU movies, such as multiple director changes with the Flash, rewriting the Flash script from scratch, Ben Affleck not directing The Batman movie anymore, rewrites apparently necessary from Chris Terrio, WB being totally reactionary and adding new movies on a whim, Suicide Squad being written in 6 weeks and getting edited last minute by a trailer production company to appease the focus groups, BvS being pushed back 10 months from the original release date, fucking Justice League Part 2 release date being pushed back (?!!!!) with Zack Snyder most likely being kicked off, etc. We all hope and want this movie to be awesome, but hearing the unplanned production problems and lack of organization/execution from WB is utterly uninspiring.

        You think he didn't know that before signing up to direct the movie? Of course he knew, but he took the project anyway. The reviews of Live by Night probably broke him. Because two weeks before the news broke, he clearly said he'll be directing the movie.

  Ben Affleck's fault mostly, he said he'd only direct it if he was happy with his script, then he starts saying that he's not sure if he'll direct it then he drops out as a director followed by script rewrites rumors, all that plus the mess that's going around Flash movie and how bad the critical reception was for the last previous DC movies is quite easy to understand why people are worried.

    That was a while ago, though. the logistics of producing, writing, and directing the movie, especially when playing someone as physically demanding as Batman, probably just became too much.

    Edit: Plus, reviewing and rewriting the Batman script and Flash script, might be to correct certain things ensuring they're going in the same direction.

        Ben started off saying he may or may not direct, and WB was adamant that he would. We ate it all up and some treated every update to the story as fact and any contradiction is a sign that things are going in the tank, when a lot of it is just negotiations and figuring out how much one person can put on their plate, and it's probably how every movie works; we just aren't clamouring for any shred of gossip surrounding the Pitch Perfect 3 and the Jumanji remake.

    Flash has lost 3 directors, Wonder Woman and Batman lose directors weeks after saying they were directing. DC has no idea what they are doing. Marvel gets the benefit of the doubt because they have a good track record.

        As for how Lex Luthor planned on controlling Doomsday:
        We are shown throughout the movie that Lex is accustomed to control.
        Lex gets what he wants from the senator (access to the Kryptonian ship and cadaver)
        Lex easily manipulates the populace into hating and fearing Superman.
        Lex manipulates Batman, fuelling his rage for Superman.
        It's implied that Lex killed his father to inherit Lexcorp.
        In short, to Lex, control is second nature.
        All the information provided in the movie logically points to the inescapable conclusion that Lex ASSUMED he could control Doomsday.
        It's the hubris of man, thinking he has control over his creation.
        P.S. In Lex's monologue to Superman, "No man in the sky intervened when I was a boy to deliver me from Daddy's fist and abominations."
        and what happened immediately after Doomsday wakes up? Superman (a man from the sky) saved Lex from an abomination's fist.
        Do you see how that works? Set up and payoff? That's what Civil War lacks, and makes Zemo the biggest plot hole of the movie.

      WB didn't intervene all that much with BvS and its very much a Snyder film. Snyder edited the theatrical cut. He's stated in several interviews that the stuff cut out of the theatrical cut was not that important to the story. So the flaws you mentioned must have been either ignored or missed by Snyder himself.

      I actually felt 2/3rds of it fly by. I'm not a big fan of Doomsday making an appearance in this movie. Would've wanted Lex to have created Bizarro instead to stain Superman's name - but I can see why they needed to have Superman slain at the end, and I hope it only works towards propelling JL into the amazing story that I imagine it will be.

  I do blame Chris Terrio for that, but i think he couldn't drastically change it because they mainly used David S Goyer scirpt. Plus not enough time, The reason why Argo was so good is because Affleck guided Chris when it came to writing the scirpt also it was based on something. While BvS Synder does not know anything about good scripts, he's the reason why does vision sequences came in the film. But Affleck is there to guide Chris so i think it might be fine also based on somebody elses work. Also i think Chris will have more time now, instead of doing a quick rewrite.

The script wasn't good until just now, but after a wave of worrying and criticism on the internet it's now suddenly done and made everyone happy including Affleck? Weird... I don't mind them taking their time - except for picking the director, do it already! lol - as long as they get it right and don't start shooting anything before it's all done, focus on the GET IT RIGHT. But hey, at least we have good news for once, right?!

    I would agree with that assessment, also for the fact that months ago, Affleck did an interview (one of the one's were he said "he won't do it if its not great" and the reporter said before the interview Affleck was sitting in a writer's meeting for The Batman in his Santa Monica offices. So the script was still in flux at that time. Terrio was probably hashing it out still with Affleck at that time.

  you have to remember that alot of this negativity was purely rumors and speculation. HArdly any of it was factual. Ever since Ben Affleck stepped off as director, the internet has been running rampant with negativity for this movie.

But this aside, my point is that Affleck has mentioned this script and that he was not happy with it yet for over a year, and now after the internet running rampant due to rumors and him stepping down the script is suddenly done and even Affleck is "very happy" with it? What kind of magic they used in less than a month to make Ben Affleck go from "I'm not happy with it yet" to supposedly "very happy with it"?

    BvS' score is extremely derivative of MoS... Barely any new music from BvS was actually original or done from scratch. I liked some of it, but MoS was much better in my opinion regarding the soundtrack.

    They still have to find a director that's simpatico with their script and vision. Not an easy task to find someone who's top notch, who doesn't want to muck about with it and leave their own stamp on it.

    Isn't it a little soon to be that optimistic. I mean, Affleck still hasn't said he's happy about the script. He stepped down from directing for a reason. I doubt it was solely because he is too busy. I am afraid he no longer looks at this project as something he treat as "his baby". I would not be surprised if after JL, he walks away completely. Yet, lets wait to hear from Affleck first.

Meh, I'd hardly call this breaking news. Not that I don't believe Justin Kroll or Mark Hughes or even Chris for that matter. But I'm tired of the he said/she, sources this and that blah blah blah talk. No point in getting hype over these tiny scraps of tib bits.
With everything going on with this movie. It's just best to wait for the official press release for this film when it's in writing and they go behind the cameras.

The news is all around when it comes to this film. I want to believe Kroll because he broke the initial news but it's hard to believe anyone at this point. I'll just wait until they finally begin production. Let's all say optimistic!
