Batman v Superman's Chris Terrio rewrote Ben Affleck's Batman script

Here's some big news that slipped through the cracks!

Variety was the first website to reveal that Ben Affleck would not direct The Batman earlier this week, but its equally reliable sister site Deadline has some new information in their report on the departure.

According to Deadline, Chris Terrio, who wrote Batman v Superman and Justice League, just turned in a rewrite of Ben Affleck's script for The Batman, which he co-wrote with DC's Geoff Johns. Affleck has repeatedly said in interviews that he was having trouble getting the script to where he wanted it, so it sounds like he brought in his friend to help out. Terrio is a long time colaborator of Affleck's and won an Oscar for writing Argo in 2013.

  I agree that Chris Terrio is great, but I'm not that shocked about Ben not directing.
  It's a HUUUUUGEEE task to produce, write, act and direct your own movie.
  He's gonna hire a director who will do what he wants, but will leave Ben with enough time and energy to focus on acting.

    He studys a lot of things for the movies he writes! I read an interview where he said he studied the history of the Amazons and Atlantens for Justice League among much more history and literature topics. Here's the interview: https://www.google.com/amp/...

      I love that he does that too but every great screenwriter researches the subject matter they write about. It's simply apart of the job. Just look at Director and Writer James Gray for an example.

Sounds like Ben had too much on his plate coming into the whole TheBatman process - which is completely unsurprising as it seems to have been very much fast tracked while he had other movies to worry about.
I dont know what was in play before BvS came out, but since then, when everyone was crazy about his Batman and wanting more, it must have been tremendous pressure.
I wonder too if the pressure for him to work on Batman negatively impacted on his other work. Could Live By Night's failure at the box office be partially attributable to a split focus, and he turned down the directors chair to not suffer the same thing twice?

  I feel like Live by Night did affect his decision. If The Batman wasnt well received, it'd be two star/direct bombs and would probly doom his career. But...no one realky knows except him. It's been a tough year for him with BvS now Live by Night. Dude needs a break lol. Hopefully he'll have a lot of say with the new director. He's just never as good as when he directs himself.

I enjoyed BvS, but a lot of the plot points and dialogue were both outrageous and over done. I mean, this is the guy who wrote the Martha sequence... so not really thrilled about this

  BvS was not his script. It was Goyer's. Look at all the movies Goyer has done, sans Batman Begins, and they all have terrible dialogue. Terrio was brought in too late to change the story so he spiced up the dialogue, which is amazing in BvS. Justice League will purely be he and Johns' film. The Batman will be fine.

    Really? I read that Terrio re-wrote Goyer's entire script for BvS. And Goyer's work on Batman Begins, The Dark Knight, and The Dark Knight Rises have also received positive reviews. Therefore, it is hard for me to say Terrio re-writing Affleck's script is a good thing. It seems like a repeat of BvS with potentially mixed to negative reviews again. For the record, I love BvS, but like everyone, I just want a solo Batman movie that everyone can like.

      Jonathan Nolan wrote The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises, not David Goyer. David Goyer is a terrible script writer. Chris Nolan himself reworked the Batman Begins script. Goyer is a good story and ideas man but he is awful when it comes to the nitty gritty of writing the script. Just look at the movies where he is the sole writer, they're terrible.

        Okay, it seems like I didn't know there was a difference between "screenplay by" and "story by."
        You're right about Goyer being terrible at writing scripts, but Terrio doesn't seem like he has a wide history of writing scripts. It seems like Argo was the only movie prior to BvS in regards to writing the script.
        Yes, he won Academy Award for Best Screenplay for Argo, but besides that, it doesn't seem like there's anything else. I guess I'll have to find out how well Terrio's script writing will be when Justice League comes out on November. If the movie garners mixed reaction like it did with BvS, I'll be worry.

        I'm just as worried about Terrio as you are. Winning an Oscar doesn't mean much to me. Let's not forget that the writer of Batman forever and Batman and Robin went on to win an Oscar.

    The Martha scene is terribly executed, I agree. That doesn't necessarily mean that it was written terribly. My point is that Terrio is an Oscar winning writer who had to try to clean up Goyer's mess last minute. I'm not saying BvS was good work at all, I'm just saying that Justice League and The Batman will give us a chance to see how good he can be in this genre.

      I think the Martha scene was very well done. I don't get the hate for it at all. Most complain that he stops trying to kill him because both their parents share the same name. But that's only the superficial reason. Its because Batman now sees this god as just a man with a mother...like him...in a similar situation. He opens his eyes to see him finally as just a guy trying to do the right thing, not the bringer of destruction Bruce built him up to be in his mind. it also allows Batman the chance at redemption that he never had as a child... to save Martha, thus also redeeming his journey into the dark abyss he's been taking for the first 2/3rds of the film. It's a wonderful way to open Batman's eyes. All with one word.

Apparently Terrio's first draft of the BvS script that he turned in didn't include the jar of urine scene, Mercy Graves and Jimmy Olsen being killed and had Aquaman fighting alongside the Trinity.
So I guess all that was Goyer, Snyder leaving himself uncredited as a writer or the product of a writer's room.

    Yeah. I didn't believe it was real at the time, but they kind of nailed all the Martha Kent stuff beat for beat so I'm kind of believing it now.
    I was just bringing it up because I thought it was interesting what Terrio specifically bring or didn't bring to the movie.

  what i mean is simple:
  the african subplot was UNNECESARY.
  All they needed to do was shift the focus on Metroplois and the deastruction of the city, and focus on how the people felt (all of them, not only Batman... yes Batman represented humanity, but reaction from the people of metropolis was also needed, to then have a major impact when they all hate him):
  think of a scene in which:
  there is a bank robbery, 3 people heavy armed.
  Suddenly Superman arrives, HE DOESNT dive in like a crazy bastard, he talks with them, tries to convince them to desist while they take hostages.
  They tell him that is his fault, their houses got destroyed by him (obviouslly he didnt but you get the point, kryptonians did it). There is a mix feeling in the bank.
  Half of them feel saved, the other half trully fear Superman.
  Dialogue fails and one of them shoots at Superman. the bullets bounce but one of them bounce into a hostage, in her leg. Superman inmediatly stops the 3 robbers.
  He tries to take the woman to a hospital, but she fears him.
  At the end of the scene he leaves her in the hospital. She doesnt fear him anymore, she realizes he is there to help.
  He leaves the hospital, but there is asimilar scenario. Half of the people there trully fear him, the other half look at him as a hero.
  I came up with that in 30 sec.
  In my opinion, it would have been a way better scene than the african scenes.
  The hearing can happen anyways, but this time, because Russia is freaking out after Superman arrived to save that space shuttle, because they believe the US goverment was involved and they sabotage it.
  All this, while Lex is the one paying politicians and MSM to spread fear towards Superman.
  There, almost nothing changes, and, well, in my opinion, is better.
  PLUS, the Lex portrayal and writting wasnt very good, lets face it.
  It was good for the movie, but they wrotte themselves into a corner.
  Now he cant be the antihero/villain he is, because he is just a crazy bastard in BvS, instead of a sociopath, and everyone in metropolis knows it.

  Comics have always incorporated political themes since their very inception. This isn't some safe-space medium where politics is off-limits. Besides, the fact that he wrote Argo should give you a hint as to why that's actually playing to his strengths.

This is "great" news considering how "loved" by audiences and critics BvS turned out to be.
Not to mention how bad and overrated it makes Affleck look. I have multiple Oscars, Golden Globes, BAFTAS, but this is, like, too much to take. Soooo hard. I can't direct this - get someone better (better than a multiple winner of almost all of the most prestigious awards? Good luck with that)
I can't write this, even with one guy helping me out already. I need ANOTHER guy to do it for me.

    Its not as strange as you think. Zack snyder without any DC support singlehandedly opened the door to a shared DC universe independent of ANY recent pre-existing DC film, directly after Johns Failed attempt at the Green Lantern film which was his attempt at creating a shared universe. just think about that for a second. Zack did exactly what geoff didnt get a second chance to do. On the fly he turned MOS 2 into BVS, and no one at WB called Geoff. Ever since that point and its no secret he's been playing catch up just to force himself IN to the DCEU equation. Even creating new jobs for him. This was no secret though. Geoff is the medias darling, and has much more respect from the press than Zack when it comes to comic books. The negativity around Zack was never present UNTIL after the announcement of BVS. No one was attacking him during the man of steel shoot. The media sided with geoffs treatment from WB, figuring he should be the Feige of DC films and literally slammed all DCEU films from all angles, from rumors to reviews until its reception was hurt. Now that Geoff is in watch it magically go away.

    In simpler terms, Zack stole Geoffs dream job. Zack made himself the Feige and Stan Lee of DC films all in one shot. Do you seriously think Geoff sat back with a smile on his face? Feige is the head of Marvel studios. He has a direct connection to Marvel and is beloved by the nerd media. Geoff basically runs DC comics and is the same thing as Feige in the medias eyes. Zack snyder has been relatively liked as a film maker, but has NO connection to DC comics. He has no sway with this media sector. And the power move was unfortunately for Geoff and DC comics, WB owns them so they didnt even need any of their approval when Zack decided to throw in Batman to Man of Steel 2. This was the power move that hurt zack in the long run. Geoff sabotaged him no doubt.

      I think Geoff Johns is overrated and I don't know why people act like he's the greatest writer ever. The justice league reboot he wrote for the new 52 was generic as hell. And earth one Batman is OK nothing revolutionary. I have absolutely no confidence as opposed to everyone else who gets so excited when this guy's name is attached to something.

Affleck's original draft, Johns input and ideas, and now Terrio adding the finishing touches... This script can't be anything less than great. If The Batman movie doesn't succeednat box office and critically, that would be the end of the DCEU.

        I'm confident the story will go mostly untouched. Just because he's not directing anymore, I don't think it'll be a case of WB derailing the script, all that would do is cause delays which we all know they don't want.

      I haven't read much of his work but I was not impressed with any of it. I was just curious if I missed something. I keep seeing people saying that they are excited because of his name being attached the project and I'm thinking it's not like it's Dennis O'Neil or somebody that has spent a lot of time with the character. I know Dennis O'Neil is a longshot but I was just trying to come up with a name that would be strongly associated with Batman.

I think Terrio is a very good and intelligent writer. I'm really looking forward to the outcome.
And for those who didn't like the "Martha" scene, that's okay, but it did actually have meaning and served a very large purpose in Batman's arc. The writing was not as bad as you really want it to be.

  The BvS script has some great lines, but too much exposition at the same time. The film spends a lot of time telling you how to feel as opposed to emoting it... but I guess that's more about how Synder decided how to film it.

    I completely agree. The characters' motivations and actions are never handled in a competent way within the narrative. Every action/inaction they make is designed to FORCE-FIT into the plot instead of having the characters INFLUENCE the plot THROUGH their motivations and actions.
    That's bad writing and bad character development 101.

      Exactly. Like there's nothing inherently wrong with the concept of the 'Martha!' scene but it's how it's mishandled and with little emotional build up that it feels hollow and ultimately falls apart as being believable and not contrived.

    I think you're confusing BvS with Civil Bore.
    The EXPOSITION in Cap's latest was excruciatingly tedious.
    Marvelites always complain that it was never explained how Lex knew that Clark and Bruce were Superman and Batman - like they need EVERYTHING spelt out for them.
    "Exposition is a device used in television programs, films, literature, poetry, plays and even music. It is the writer's way to give background information to the audience about the setting and the characters of the story."
    If anything the EXPOSITION in BvS was slightly underdone. It is still streets ahead of the juvenile generic fluff pumped out for public consumption by Marvel Studios.

      I have to agree, especially in the theatrical cut which is jarring in flow to some , b ut one of my first watch I thought was full of ambiguities that in some sense gets the viewer thinking, BvS is in fact underdone in the exposition department. The extended cut fleshes it out to an optimum level but even in that cut, some things aren't elaborated on and just understood. Eg. Star Labs' Jenet Klyburn revealing to Lois Lane that Wallace Keef's wheelchair was lined with Lead, or Batman's kryptonite bullets being labelled with Pb - it's never explicitly said in the movie that Superman can't see through lead and is thus an exploitation point.

Jesse Eisenberg referring to Chris Terrio as "This guy Chris Terrio"will always be my favorite part of the BVS press tour lmao it was hilarious. But saying that to say Jesse is literally a genius and he was blown away by the writing ability of Terrio. Affleck is no slouch either obviously but hes not shy about utilizing his resources. BVS had very sharp dialouge and was suppose to play out like a political drama, but the story itself was not strong enough plot wise to support the sophisticated themes it intended to explore. John's obviously contributed to the comic faithfullness of The Batman but Its still Afflecks story, now just with the best craftsmanship available. It shows his dedication to ensuring a successful film for the fans as well as the critics. Him stepping down from director to co-director ( im 100% sure thats what his role will be) in order to give the best performance was addition by subtraction. Now all he needs to do is hire the right guy or gal behind the camera. Fincher might be a pipedream but you never know.

BvS script wasn't all Chris Terrio. Terrio came in later after Goyer and Snyder had done the original drafts/story. Clearly Chris did all he could with what he had. I'd bet money a script conceived by Affleck, Johns, and Terrio would be pretty superb.

This is all assuming that WB will even let the solo Batman movie go to production now...
WB is waiting for Justice League to head into post-production to give an early preview to a small selection of critics to assess whether or not to continue with the DCEU or reboot it. This should happen sometime in April or May so don't expect any actual major developments of the film (other than rumors of script rewrites, etc).
Meanwhile, Ben Affleck has had a 4000 feet view of Justice League, and things aren't looking too good, so he has decided to jumping the sinking ship the best way possible.

  And why not? I know that, unfortunately, the scene has become a joke on the internet, but it worked perfectly within the movie and gave us a good look at how deranged and traumatized Batman is.
  I know is not a popular opinion, but that people just wanted to overlook it (and some didn't even get it) it's not the movie's fault.

Well, this is reassuring at least. With Ben not suffering so much pressure, and with guys like Johns and Terrio (can I add Snyder too?) behind his back, the movie should be in good hands as of now.
Let's hope Affleck can get a good director that can work along them. Matt Reeves seems the obvious choice as it has been mentioned, but I won't get my hopes up before anything official is said

BvS had many problems, but the script itself (dialogue, etc) was not one of them.
