The Rock explains why he wanted to play Black Adam in 'Shazam'

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson was announced as Black Adam way back in September of 2014. He'll star in Shazam, which is currently scheduled for a 2019 release. During a recent YouTube Q&A, Johnson was asked what made him want to play Black Adam.

"Look... I love the role of Black Adam," Johnson said. "I love that he starts off as a slave, that he felt like he was wronged. I just love that backstory. And I think that Black Adam has always been, for me, the most intriguing superhero."

This past Christmas, The Rock and Henry Cavill teased something between Black Adam and Superman in the DC Films universe. Now we just need to know who is playing Shazam!

If I'm right, Adam is more of a superhero to his people. And he did fight with the Justice Society in the past.

He'd definitely look the part (wearing a wig that is). But I haven't seen him prove his acting ability. But he does seem like the kind of guy who could stand next to the Rock and not look ridiculous.

All I ask is - since JL is finished and The Batman movie with Ben Afleck is most def gonna come out in 2018 no matter the shit we're hearing right now - to see Black Adam in a movie.
I don't care for Shazam, for me Black Adam could be in Man Of Steel 2, JL 2 or Gotam City Sirens for all I know.
Just let me see Rock as Black Adam, done properly, and then, my dearest DC, you can go to hell, you can reboot, or be gone from existence, for all I care.

John Cena as Shazam would have the Shazam movie market itself... Literally all they'd have to do is make 3 trailers and let the internet market John Cena v The Rock with Super powers.
It's pretty obvious John Cena can pull off Shazams kiddish charm, he's done it so many times before especially with fans.

    Is his willing suspension of disbelief believable at times? Not entirely. But John Cena has pretty much already played the role of Billy Batson. It wouldn't require him to do anything else than just be a toned down version of himself.
    And the Shazam film should be ridiculous on some level. Not be a serious dark tone to it. I love dark films and what DCEU has done so far. But Shazam should be friendly to kids because much like Spiderman he's a character kids can actually see themselves being.

  Exactly. Black Adam is a hero in his own mind. It'll take a hell of a script to make the whole thing work, but I guess we have to believe in the Rock's brain trust which I think is driving the picture.

Maybe we're getting a Black Adam origin story instead... kinda drops in line with why Johnson keeps referring to Adam as a hero. I also remember reading that the movie wouldn't be as connected to the DCEU as maybe BvS was to Man of Steel, and that may because they're looking to set the movie in the past like Wonder Woman. I wouldn't count on seeing Capitan Marvel if that were the case. Then again I'm most likely completely wrong and just spewing out nonsense lol.

except he is no superhero. sometimes he is sort of anti-hero (ish) but definitely not a hero character. I mean he was literally created to be the evil version of Captain Marvel.
