Gal Gadot responds to Wonder Woman U.N. ambassador backlash; new movie image released

In October Wonder Woman was named an honorary U.N. ambassador, and in December after a number of protests and petitions, that title was taken away. TIME just published a big piece on the character of Wonder Woman, and they spoke to Gal Gadot about the controversy.

"There are so many horrible things that are going on in the world, and this is what you’re protesting, seriously?" Gadot asked.

The petition mentioned Wonder Woman's "large breasts" and "impossible proportions", and Gadot had a response for that too.

“When people argue that Wonder Woman should ‘cover up,’ I don’t quite get it,” Gadot said. “They say, ‘If she’s smart and strong, she can’t also be sexy.’ That’s not fair. Why can’t she be all of the above?”

Ironic that as we try to make things more inclusive, that people still get left out. The idea of celebrating all types of people only actually applies to few. Apparently you can't be attractive, powerful and/or smart and be seen as a role model because of your looks. Sounds like exclusion in my opinion.

  Wonder Woman shows women they can be ambitious, that they don't have to settle with being acted upon but instead can decide their own destiny.
  To everyone, Wonder Woman shows a different kind of strength than the likes of Batman or Superman. She settles conflict with love and understanding, and in doing so, shows the strength of "fighting" battles in other ways than violence.
  I appreciate her and am very happy to have her inspiring people all over the world.

      It has absolutely nothing to do with "relating to the Amazons." Wonder Woman's creation was a very important part of Women's History in the U.S. She was created by a man who lived among the most important women of the American Suffrage Movement. They were all of the inspiration for the character, and Wonder Woman is a beacon of hope and empowerment. THAT is what people relate to, not her "hometown."

Disappointing that conversations about Wonder Woman so often end up being about her body, especially her breasts.
And it's ironic that Gal got some hate for having "small" breasts when she was cast yet the protest belittles one of the most important super heroes to "a white big breasted female."
Truly shows how far up their own asses they are, I'm glad Gal spoke out about it. Call it what it is, ignorant and stupid.

  I understand Gal has a slender figure. It would be like having a thin Superman or a chubby Batman.
  Some of the complaints focusing on her breasts were different though. It's not important for Wonder Woman to have a certain size of breast, and some people made it seem that way.
  But you're right that Gal delivered in BvS by capturing the wisdom, strength, and compassion that makes Wonder Woman unique. Here's hoping they succeed in bringing her to the cinematic masses next year.

I wouldn't label the problem as being an SJW issue, but an issue of ignorance and misunderstanding.
Women are so often sexualized and praised for their bodies that people SHOULD be suspicious. But it takes only a few moments to research and learn that Wonder Woman being a UN ambassador is NOT like that.

    Wonder Woman was created to be "feminist propaganda" (a direct quote) and some version of her consider men to be the inferior gender, as the TAS version.
    That is as "hardcore" as you can get with a mainstream character.
    These imperfections is what makes her interesting to read though. The 2009 toon film had a pretty good outlook on the tattle of genders. Let´s see what 2017 will give us.

The problem is that DC Comics itself has made NUMEROUS attempts in the last 5 years or so to "cover her up", trying to cater to all those feminist extremists and their "women in comics are too objectified" agenda. They have given her pants so she wont have to show her bare legs, they practically covered her up from head to toe in her recent "god of war" costume in her solo book, they completely changed her costume to something far less revealing in the current DC animated movies (while they did not change the other characters costumes).
Oh and how about that Gary Frank cover from a recent Wonder Woman comic book which was PULLED by DC because of yet another feminist shitstorm about WW allegedly looking too sexy/voluptuous etc. on the cover.
This problem has existed for quite a while at DC and because of social media and feminist agendas, they are so scared to show Wonder Womans sexy and feminine side now in order to make her less "sexualized" which is complete bull because it sends the message that women cannot be sexy or have to be ashamed of their beauty or sexuality. while the male characters are still portrayed as perfectly shaped comic book gods and nobody has a problem with showcasing their masculinity.
Taking away a womans sexuality or acting like women should be ashamed of being sexy and having that side to themselves is about as anti-feminist as it gets. And its the complete anti-thesis to Wonder Woman. She stands for EQUALITY. That does not mean to deny her any form of sex appeal or sexuality. It just means that every woman should have the same right as every man to be as free as they want and that means not having to hide their sexuality as well.
I am actually a staunch feminist but to me feminism does not mean to rob a woman of her feminine or sexy side. It simply means to allow women to show and live out all of their sides, just like men.
Yes thats why Wonder Woman should never be covered up. She is a beautiful and sexy woman and her sexuality is part of who she is, just like with every other human being. Nobody should be ever shamed for living out who they are. It does not mean she should be reduced to a mere object of lust (which is just as bad as denying her sexual side completely) but it means that Wonder Woman (and thus DC Comics) should never be afraid or ashamed of the characters beauty, sensuality or sexy side which is just as much a part of her as her strength, love, wisdom and compassion.

        I am very much into social justice issues and especially women in comics, movies, media, etc. I enjoy consuming the media but admit there are problems with it.
        In this case, Wonder Woman's ambassadorship was removed because people, including women, chose to reduce her value to a negative stereotype about women being sexualized in media and entertainment. This is common, but they are overlooking her importance to people all over the world, and her history as a role model for compassion and strength for minorities and women.
        Ironically their fight to keep women from being sexualized has made them trivialize Wonder Woman's worth to being related to her body and not her character. A mistake.

        Equity is what I'm talking about. That means understanding the HISTORY of women being sexualized and being valued for their bodies, due to their lack of access to jobs and lbecause of lower wages paid to them as opposed to men.

  DC comics literality did the OPPOSITE in the last 5 years. The 2010 pants and jacket look only lasted 1 year. The ultra 90s suit from when Azzarello left was also only in that (dumb) storyline and it had a narrative propose. Her classic looks though was used in all other books.

But for me, personally, I know a handful of people (both women and men) who have been influenced by Wonder Woman, and what she stands for, enough to help them shape their self-image.         That's exactly it. We don't realize how big of an impact fiectional characters have on kids and adults alike, it seems silly to someone who never needed a fictional hero because they always had mum or dad play that role.As an example, I grew up to admire Barbie, I feel she's one of the most misunderstood role models of our time, seeing as every adult just thinks she's about a pretty face, a skinny body and nice things but as a kid Barbie taught me that I can be anything.
        I never aspired to look like her. You can watch all the Barbie movies and you'll see it's never about image but always about friendhip, loyalty and believing in yourself, hence I was and still am extremely angry at the premise of the new Barbie movie and who they chose to play her in her first live action debut. Actually, no I'm disgusted.
        Wonder Woman serves the same purpose for girls. We don't care what she looks like of what she's wearing, we care that in a world dominated by male superheroes she can kick some serious ass and that she has a good heart and she fights for what's right. THAT is why they made her an ambassador and that's why i can't see why people were atupid enough to petition against that.

    But why? Because "she stands for women"? Why should girls only look up to (mainly) women? I can understand female role-models concerning feminine behavior... but a comic book, fictional hero? I don't get why literally ONLY physically strong and capable female characters can be seen as "good role models for girls" when they are essentially emulating masculinity. Ironic, considering feminists can't shut up how toxic masculinity is.
    Look at Rogue One. As is to be expected, Felicity Jones made the usual shallow remarks: "I hope this inspires young girls". As if seeing female leads in action movies will magically make girls more interested in these roles they are biologically not predestinationed to like. Meanwhile back in reality, nearly 70% of Rogue One's audience was male. This not only proves that women and girls really couldn't care less about "female leads", but neither do men. It is the role they are playing that matters. And "being the hero" (in a physical, fighting sense) will always be a masculine trait hence why the audience was largely male. This is an accurate reflection of reality. Make no mistake, I'm not arguing against more female leads (although I do argue against shallow "diversity" and "representation" quotas). I am saying, these "strong female leads" ultimately change nothing, nor do women care if you look at the numbers.
    Like I said before, what I also find troubling is the idea that only "badass" female leads can be considered "strong role-models". This is especially strong coming from Felicity Jones, who only 2 years ago starred in The Theory of Everything, as Jane Hawking. Now THAT is a immensely STRONG role-model, for both boys and girls. Despite the fact that she couldn't kick ass. She couldn't fight. She wasn't a "leader". Yet.. The character she plays is one of the emotionally strongest characters I think I've ever seen. These characters are far more valuable and educational than ultimately "shallow" characters like WW. Let's be honest, WW is hardly a character. She is a political statement. This has ALWAYS been her Achilles' heel. Meanwhile F. Jones never said anything about "strong role-models for young girls" when she portrayed Jane. No one said a thing.
    My point? To focus on this non-issue is a mistake on every level, especially when there are far better and more meaningful characters out there anyways. Actual human beings who have accomplished amazing things and not just politically motivated characters whose only accomplishment is claiming to stand for "women's rights" while ACTUALLY doing jack shit to improve it.

  The only reasons the dissenting members of the U.N. gave was "too white, too busty, too American, and clothes are too revealing." They completely missed the entire point of Wonder Woman and her major relevance to female empowerment.

    Me think that's perhaps that's one of the possible reasons why they cast Gal and not the Alexandra Diddario type actress (american, busty and blue eyed), to try and break that stigma yet everyone still complained because too skinny, no acting abilities, no boobs, etc. Can't win, somehow there'll always be someone that's offended.

Nearly 45,000 butthurt villains, signed the online petition. And apparently over 600 of them were United Nations staff members. I'm pretty sure that EVENTUALLY the stupid and lame protest, would've faded away. Warner Brothers, Zack Snyder and team could not have done a better job when casting Gal Gadot for this role. She is truly amazing. Truly great casting.
