David Ayer is back in the DC Extended Universe!

The Suicide Squad director is reuniting with Margot Robbie for her Harley Quinn and friends spin-off movie, Gotham City Sirens. In addition to Harley Quinn, the movie will feature some of the top female villains from DC Comics, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In addition to directing, David Ayer will also be a producer on the movie along with Margot Robbie, who worked hard to get this project started after falling in love with Harley Quinn while making Suicide Squad.

Shortly after this news broke, Ayer confirmed it with one simple tweet:

Geneva Robertson-Dworet, who has also wrote scripts for the Tomb Raider reboot and Sherlock Holmes 3, is writing the screenplay. There is no release date set, but The Hollywood Reporter says that Gotham City Sirens is being fast-tracked!

Also worth noting from The Hollywood Reporter's story is that a Suicide Squad sequel is still planned. A Deadshot spin-off starring Will Smith is also being discussed.

    Lets hope they do a better job with this one then they did with Suicide Squad. That ending was the worst. Keep the story simple and make it street level. No reason Catwoman, Poison Ivy & Harley Quinn to be fighting people the Justice League would be dealing with.

            Exactly.If you look at all these featurettes and interviews when actors and actresses are asked about how it is to work with a certain director,you'll hear most,if not all,say that the guy is a "visionary" and he's fantastic.Of course,there is the possibility that said person is great to be around on set,but it's an entirely different thing than what you end up seeing on the screen.

    Any interest I had in this movie kind of just flew out the window :/. I hope Ayer does a MUCCHHHHH better job with this than he did with Suicide Squad but... I guess i'll just have to wait and see on this one. i'm more of the camp that I just want to keep seeing fresh faces coming to direct films at DC. Keep it a bit unexpected.

    Hopefully this film gives me the Harley Quinn Arc i wanted to see in SS.

        I guess that does make me feel a bit better. But DC hasn't proven to me yet that a change in writers equates to a better movie. Especially if theres just going to be a bunch of studio interference again. I had a problem with the Directing just as much as the writing though...

    End of Watch and Fury show what Ayer can do. I wasn't a fan of Suicide Squad but I have a feeling that wasn't Ayer's doing but WB.

    It was being made during the big transitions incoming Johns and such, and I believe it was a victim of that.

    As an actress and Hollywood star, Margot is really gaining my respect for being successful, standing out, and advocating for herself and her friends. I think she and possibly WB felt like they owed it to Ayer to give him another go.

      Taylor Sheridan wrote Hell or high water in 3 weeks,which is one of the best movies of the year.
      John Michael McDonagh(The guard,Calvary),who is the brother of Martin McDonagh(In Bruges,Seven psychopaths) wrote the script for Calvary in 2 months,so it's very doable,but you need to know the characters and stories you're drawing inspiration from,not just slap them together and call it a script.
      What Ayer wrote in 6 weeks was very amateurish and he shouldn't have signed on in the first place if he knew he didn't have enough time to make something good.Besides,from what I recall,Charles Roven said in an interview that Ayer himself pitched SS while they were working on BvS,so the guy has no excuse.

          Directing and visual style are two different things. You can have consistently pretty images produced by a really talented DP (such as Larry Fong), but still can have a really wooden cast of characters.
          Snyder is a really visual director, obviously, but he often sacrifices story for cool visual cues.
          Your english is fine, but I think you misinterpreted mine.

            No, he presents the story with visuals, something that a lot of directors can't do nowadays.
            He is a great director, but not a very good writter, ill give you that.
            If he wrotte the lines or character of Lex Luthor, then ill say, he is a shitty writter. However he did a great job at directing the movie.
            Look at Nolan, for example.
            He is a great writter, amazing... directing wise.... he is good, but remember, how badly shot a lot of the scenes in BB were....his directing has gotten better, but, again, presenting the story/script in an amazing visual way....
            Thats Snyder strongest points..
            Just watch the Watchmen ultimate cut, BvS ultimate cut... MoS....
            The issue with BvS was lex, they fucked up the character IN the writtign department.... the directing was not the issue.

            I agree, he has amazing visual style. My only argument was that some of his visuals do a poor job of pushing the story forward and pacing. His job as a director is much more than images. It's to maintain a consistent quality/pace throughout the entire production.
            He's not just a cinematographer, which is the same for Nolan. They have Larry Fong or Wally Pfister for composition, and they manage them.

            You are failing to understand the story, philosophies and hided meaning in the visuals, and thats something that Snyder is great at...

            Dont confuse writting with directing.
            As for the pacing, his cut, was BvS UC, and Watchmen DC.
            A perfect example for this is MoS.
            A lot of people dismiss MoS as just destruction porn because they fail to understand the nuance and philosophies in the film.

            Lol....nothing I said indicated that I don't understand the movie. That's a cop out statement. I fully understand the philosophies involved because he uses basic psychoanalysis and Christ imagery galore. They aren't really that challenging lol.
            As for his cuts... I assume since you know so much more about film than I, that you must know the basic rule of tight storytelling. A 4 hour movie isn't tight storytelling. That being said, Watchmen is mostly a fun watch. His cuts are definitely better than the theatrical release, but he probably needs to put more effort into a shorter film.
            He's not a writer, sure you're right, but a director, as I told you before, "directs" everyone in the right direction. This includes preproduction aspects. I'm not confusing any role with the other, so modify your argument.

            Humans see him either as a savior or as a threat, some see him like a god, HE doesnt think like that, he is just a normal dude from Kansas that happens to have godlike powers. He is not perfect, he makes mistakes, and even if he wants to help, sometimes his decisions have bad consequences.... thats the point of MoS and BvS... they made Clark human.
            MoS was essentialy about freedom of choice (there, i just explained to you the philosophy of the movie wich you obviouslly failed to understand), "HIS DESTINY" was to save Krypton and build a colony in earth, peacefully, thats why Jorel sent him to earth... HE CHOOSED, HE (Jonathan always let him choose) decided to become SUperman...
            You are obviouslly misunderstanding the plot and psychology of the characters.
            And I assume since you know so much more about film that you must know the basic rule on massive blockbusters. AT the end, the studio has the final word. They decide the script, they decide the runtime and final cut... which is WHY the final cut was 2.30 hrs instead of, the SNyder cut, 3....

            He never implied: "superman is jesus"
            The script pointed out that some people would see him as a god, others as a monster. At the end, his personality and goals are not even close, in fact are the entire opposite of someone trying to act as a god....
            What you failed to understand is simple. He is a normal dude from kansas trying to help people. He is not perfect, he makes mistakes, at times he doesnt know what the fuck he is doing, he only knows 1 thing... he wants to help.
            As for his cuts... I assume since you know so much more about film than I, that you must know the basic rule of big blockbusters:
            the studio calls the shots.
            Snyder's BvS cut was 3 hours. WB pushed for a 2.30 hour cut.
            Snyder didnt wrotte the script, WB approves the script.

    He should ultimately do Squad 2, NO question there, but it´s nice to see that WB sticks to people who delivered for them (and me). Like it or not but the film introduced a new mass market brand for DC and all the female characters worked well in Squad. Let´s see if this is how Catwoman will be introduced and you could have the Birds as an antagonistic force. Or even the Squad. Here are the classic Sirens btw:

      Man. Smith gets to do another villain movie before doing Hancock 2..........I don't know if I should be happy or sad that Hancok may never get a sequel.

      There is more that 1 take on her. The one feature in Squad was for example darker than the TAS take but lighter than the late 90s comic version (he murdered her the day they met but Ivy saved and "enhanced" her) and most importantly the Post-Rocksteady take. It´s still comic and downright panel arcuate:

    So if this project is being ''fast tracked'', when will it come out then? Before 2020? And seriously WB need to make a timeline with these movies, because now it feels like they dumping these upcoming movies without an actually plan. I know that there is a timeline for the movies, but now with this.........i hope what they are doing is going to be all fine. :/

      Yup, agreed. Seems like they're just shooting out "quick win" ideas left and right, any way to make fast cash.

      I believe the original Snyder timeline will be fully abandoned after Justice League's release. Hence why they scraped the "part 1" and "part 2", and will make the movie the last of that phase (a finite storyline). Anything after JL will follow the new model of these recently announced/rumored movies.

      Oh. It´s "a few months" now. It was 2 weeks before, and that bit is still unconfirmed.

      The crazy amount of prep work that went into the film and that Ayer pitched the film himself basically disproves any strong rush-job rumors. WB may have given him too much oversight, of anything, and he then needed to be reigned in after the dust settled. It certainly cost a pretty penny.
      No one will make that mistake again.

            No source from me. I've just been seeing folks talking about on here and other sites. The common claim that I saw was that Ayer was apparently rushed to write the script.

    Fury was his first A-list project and it was Aye´s decision to go hog wild with improvisation that lead to the Fix-It-Felix re-shoots. NOT that the first cut sounded better, or more profitable.
    It´s further more than nice that WB decided to throw lots of money at the problem, instead of just shoveling anything into cinemas.

    I really enjoyed this version of Harley Quinn... Far more than I'd anticipated (especially considering I didn't really like the movie) but to make a movie just about her and a couple of "female" characters feels like a gimmick. They know Harley can't carry her own film, so it all feels a little forced. I'd rather have SS2 tbh... The case is great, even Will Smith I really liked him as Deadshot. Ayer is a very good director, he just needs time. It's obvious SS was a rushed mess (confirmed by reports) so let's hope they won't make that mistake again, although it appears they're not slowing down. Please WB, don't screw this up.

      Dude, Gotham Sirens was a fairly popular DC book and the team up between Harley, Ivy, and Selinna is a fan favorite since it's debut years ago.

      Harley Quinn and Catwoman are two of DC's most popular characters. Even more popular than Wonder Woman, who WB thinks can carry a movie. And Ivy is very popular too. That's like saying Batman v Superman was just a movie about a couple of male characters.
