'Suicide Squad' hits another box office milestone and beats 'Man of Steel'

Suicide Squad hit another major box office milestone in its fifth weekend, crossing the $300 million mark domestically. David Ayer's movie about bad guys held the number 2 spot for the second week in a row, coming up short to Don't Breathe which was number 1 again.

Overseas Suicide Squad has made $375.5 million, bringing its grand total worldwide box office to around $675 million. That's bigger than Man of Steel's $668 million total, making Suicide Squad the second biggest DC Extended Universe movie, only behind Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice's $872 million.

At this rate, Suicide Squad should definitely break the $700 million worldwide box office milestone in the next week or so, which is a huge accomplishment for a movie like this! Especially when you factor in all of the negative reviews.

I'm not sure I'd look at it like that, but at least you didn't compare Marvel's Phase 1 to the DCEU. Those people are crazy! Marvel started with a hero that no one heard of! (Iron Man). The DCEU started with Superman and Batman.

    I don't think it's really fair to compare the two universes as a whole at all. They both took very different approaches. *Maybe* you can compare The Avengers to Justice League, but even there the approaches were different.

      People are interested in seeing something "new". I am for example more interested to see Aquaman and Dr. Strange, than another Batman and Spider-man reboot. I make like the last 2 more, but that doesn´t change a thing.

    No one was expecting Suicide Squad to make a billion dollars. The fact that it's going to make over $700M is HUGE! But yes, BvS should have easily made $1 billion, and Man of Steel should have made more than it did.

      Man of Steel(668mil) just had about one week of no competition for itself. Monsters University(744mil) and World War Z(540mil) certainly did hurt the total box office of Man of Steel.
      Man of Steel released on June 14 while both Monsters University and World War Z released on June 21. Compared to the competition Man of Steel faced, it did amazing!

      MoS was amazing and still is, also the CGI which is very spectacular but BvS has some defects in it like the crashed World Engine and the metahuman cameos, if you don't see this then either you're blind or you have bad eyes, people know what they see and that's what counts.

      C'mon compare it with MoS, the crashed World Engine looked like a painting and the metahuman cameos were bad period, what about Bats' break-in at Lexcorp, a split sec on a surveillance camera, C'MON!!! they could do better than that after 3 years of filming. Malone's role should've been Babs in the pre-Batgirl stage or maybe Kara Zor El because she appeared as a blonde in BvS. With all this material they would've easily crossed the $1B mark.

      That split second on surveillance camera was awesome! Now that was Batman! I do agree that it would of been cool seeing Batman steal the kryptonite, but we already got enough of Batman beating up bad guys in the movie.
      My favorite cameo and I believe it is for the majority as well was when Flash came from the future! The crashed world engine scene visuals look great! I understand you don't like those scenes but I like them.
      I believed and I think many others too that Malone was going to be Batgirl. I'm sorry that you're disappointed about Malone's role.

      I like the direction they took. I don't want to spoil for others if they haven't seen the movie but I really like what they did. I'm so looking forward to Justice League next year! Of course Wonder Woman first since her movie is releasing first! They're probably most likely going to take a picture in the Wonder Woman movie. The picture we saw of Wonder Woman in BvS!

      I will watch it anyway at the cinema no doubt but indeed i'm a bit butthurt about Malone's role, this great actress deserved better, the only thing i hope is that her role will be fleshed out more in the Cyborg or The Flash movie.

      Malone being Batgirl would of been awesome! I still liked the direction they went with the movie. Going to be great seeing the continuation of the story next year when Justice League arrives or even Wonder Woman if they have a present time scene.

      Well if you're realistic about it WB did a shit job with the theatrical cut, i like DC Comics, their stories go deeper and i like the dark tone but the problem is the execution, they could've done so much with the material they had and failed to do so, period that is a fact not an opinion. Read my other comments on this page then you see my gripes i had with BvS.

  Yeah that position never made sense, but it allowed me to take a step back and ask, what does make sense? I'm only speaking in terms of Worldwide and maybe Dom BO, mind you, not quality, since that's in the eye of the Watcher (is there a Beholder? Or would that just be in dungeons and dragons?). Anyway, batman begins and iron man set up their worlds nicely, only one which would become a universe, sadly, but that's not my point. Then with the MCU came The Incredible Hulk, which bombed, and okay part ones and a part 2, til Avengers changed the game, meanwhile TDK and TDKR also smashed the BO.
  Arguably, neither one could save Green Lantern, since really really movies stand in their own merit, but phase 2 shot straight up, and mos did Thor 2 to GOTG bank, a good range, not far from TWS, so not Antman or AoU, but a very good middle. Still, it'd be 3 years til dceu's next outing. And here we are, so I just can't see it anyway other than post MOS v PHASE 3.

  I wouldn't say no one had heard of Iron Man. He was known for his look and name to the general public, and had success as a minor of the bigger Marvel pop icons. The movie did transform him into a much bigger and more popular character, though.

  That's BS. I'm from Nigeria, a third world country and even I know who Iron Man is. And this is way before the MCU was even a concept. I've heard people use that as an excuse to justify most of the phase 1 movies not grossing over a certain amount. So, when you say that these are characters no one has heard of who are you talking about? I can assure you A LOT of people from places outside the U.S. have known about these characters for a very long time. We'd get re runs of Bill Bixby's hulk and even old cartoons like spider-man and his amazing friends

  Compare the DCEU to Fox by Marvel then. The X-men were the bestselling US comic property of the 80s, the 90s toon was huge and new toons kept coming until they got bough by Disney. The Fantastic Four gave birth to the Marvel universe we know today and look at that franchise now! The Film series dead and the comic cancelled... Urgh.
  I also don´t remember seeing a lot of Superman Returns sequels and Mickey Mouse isn´t a film star, so reconcilability won´t just transform into box-office revenue.
  Iron-man was lastly a B-level brand. He had toons, games and a lot of comics to his name. He was bigger than the Squad before the film and it was The Hulk sister-film that looked to be a "sure bet". He is an A level character but the public though otherwise. General audiences area fickle mistress.

Yea I agree I wouldn't compare the same way. Nolanverse was already in the end stages of their run. It had a 1billion dollar outing in its last movie TDKR. I think you're right in saying DC got back in the game. They are still look for their 1 billion dollar critically acclaimed hitter.

It's cool that Suicide Squad is performing really well regardless of reviews and not opening in China. Howerver WB needs to stop getting in the way. Hopefully now that they know the DCEU will be a cash cow for them they will stop messing the movies up. At this Rate the only great movie will be Affleck Batman, since he is the only director they seem to trust.

They did NOT get in the way. Going by everything we know so far, Ayer's version would have been even less popular. It may have been better edited, but there was less color, less action, and less humor. It was suffering from snyderitis something fierce, and the test audiences did not accept it.

They tried to do something very different things and WB´s auteur drive approach proved true for the DCEU. A Snyder film is just different from an Ayer film and the Squad comic line is no Superman or JLA publication. There is no "DC formula", so expect this to happen again. I don´t want one either.

  MoS was a great start for Superman, I loved it but he had zero character development in BvS and stayed the exact same throughout. I honestly thought we would start getting the boyscout, at least a little bit taste of it, but nothing. And then even says "No one stays good in this world", Superman will NEVER EVER say that. He will always stay positive and optimistic even if others lost faith.

    Superman actually SAID that, in comics. He said that EXACT phrase in the stories depicting his first years. Sometimes i think all people want to see is iconography... they want to see those characters EXACTLY how they imagine they are. But a character, before becoming what it is (and acquiring the traits he's known for) must start somewhere. That's what's so interesting! Those character weren't BORN that way... they BECAME as we know them!

      Ok, but I think his path in BvS is VERY diffrent from his path in MoS. MoS is about the nature and identity of Clark Kent. BvS his about what his father allways told Clark... BvS is about how the world perceives him. Basically (IMHO) in the end of MoS Supes accepts himself. In the end of BvS the world accepts Supes.

      I don't know. It's cathartic. And I think it's a very natural progression of the theme about the reseblances between Supes and Christ that Snyder started. I know a lot of people found that theme cheap (being an atheist for me it's yust a similitude), but it's there and it's right to not abandon it. So you know... everyone is changed by his death (his sacrifice), and then he is resurrected. And it's also coherent (if a bit rushed) with his story in the comics.

      We'll see... in the epilogue of BvS they said that Kent died during the Doomsday attack, buried under a pile of debrees. As in the comic. But the, in the '90s, they said that the doctors were wrong due to te injuries and that that whasn't Clark Kent's corpse. But now that we have easy DNA tests that would be impossible. We'll see. Maybe Bruce Wayne will move some piecese with all his power. Or maybe not. There are plenty of ways!

Harley Quinn and Joker have been way more popular than Superman for the last decade. I'm sure that even if they made Superman similar to his classic known version, a movie with Harley and other Bat characters would have been more successful regardless.

So I have been thinking about this for a while now, why did Waller create the Suicide Squad when she had Enchantress? Why was she never even part of it? and when they got to Waller's location, all they did was went up to the roof and a helicopter picked her up so the Squad wasn't even needed like at all.

  (The script writer) Ayer is a fan of the comic series and a lot of it is taken from the books. It were technically comic writers who did the "thinking" years ago. That why there is a credits shout out for them.

It's always to have more than one weapon and Enchantress made it obvious that she doesn't like taking orders.
Enchantress was part of the squad.
The squad are expendable and they were dealing with an unnatural threat.

A) Wallers Task Force X is about having a group of expendables. Not just 1. She loses enchantress in a mission. There's no recovering the mission. That's why Waller is always about leverage and contingencies.
B) Enchantress was supposed to be part of it when it was in the starting stages of being a Task Force back when she was trying to get approval.
C) Did you forget the part of the entire building crawling with Enchantress forces, and that all the soldiers they sent in were either captured or killed. And the room she was filled with was filled with civilians who weren't cleared for any of it meaning ZERO training. As boss as Waller was she needed to leverage the squad to extract HVT1.

  The Squad didn't even do anything normal soldiers couldn't do, well at least until the end. Deadshot was like the only one that killed most of them, even the soldiers around them killed more than Diablo, Katana, Harley, Croc and Captain Boomerang. And this brings up another flaw, she says she wants META-HUMANS against meta-humans, Diablo is the only meta-human on that team. I also doubt that she cared if soldiers died, those soldiers were her "expendables" anyways.

    Amanda could've easily ordered a second squad of soldiers instead of the SS but she didn't because it was an opportunity to test the Squad on field and since it's a low-risk mission they'd likely succeed anyway. Then she could stamp 'victors' on the Squad and convince the White House to let her snag higher-profile candidates. Random example, instead of Killer Croc, she could have King Shark if she could find leverage on him. If she could rally Boomerang as a good idea, she could try get her hands on Captain Cold.
    Just because you weren't individually shown every character kill a number of Eyes of the Adversary, while there were hoards of them, doesn't mean others didn't work their numbers. Deadshot wasn't the only one that killed the EoA.
    She doesn't say she wants Metas against Metas, just that having Metas fight our wars is beneficial. Diablo, Deadshot is practically a Meta-human with his weapons, Croc can rip most everyone into shreds. This squad was a prop for her which is why when there was a real-threat (Enchantress's brother Incubus appeared in the subway) she didn't deploy the squad but only Enchantress. The squad members were just props to her, part of her pitch to finally make the White House agree with her.

      If you are going to create a movie about a team of villains fighting then about you show it? That's like not showing Batman and Superman fighting in Batman v Superman.

      You didn't see each character take down the EoA in the movie? I did. I'm just saying they couldn't have shown every single kill the same way we didn't see every single chitauri's death in Act III of the avengers. Most of what's in the movie is the Squad fighting one thing or another.
      Didn't you notice Harley take down two of those EoA just because they were bugging her while she was reading a text from Joker?

      And that was EXACTLY what El Diablo was supposed to do. Swear of killing and using his powers but then eventually uses them to save the group. That's straight out of the comics.

The Suicide Squad was created so they can do the IMPOSSIBLE, go to the world's most dangerous locations, deal with terrorist organizations or most of the time it's to retrieve intel. They NEVER work alongside the military, they have never had a ridiculous mission like helping a woman climb a few stairs. Don't tell me for one sec that the Suicide Squad was the only option to save her, especially since you could still kill those creatures with guns, just like how Deadshot and even Harley kindly showed us in the elevator, so "unkillable" my ass.

    Diablo and Croc are both metahumans. Deadshot is the best marksman in the world, so he was definitely worth selecting. Boomerang was only added because he "survived" an encounter with the Flash (they're clearly unaware of Flash's no-killing policy, which makes sense since he isn't a public hero yet). Katana was Flagg's bodyguard, not a member of the SS.
    I'll give you Harley- her inclusion makes no sense from a pragmatic standpoint. But to be fair, her inclusion in the New 52 comic iteration of the SS made no sense either. The only reason she's there is to sell more comics/tickets.

      In more modern interpretations he has atavism, which gives me superhuman strength. Idk, we'll see if the SS version mutates further- he was clearly able to hold his breath underwater for an extended duration, hinting at his changing physiology. And yeah, Katana didn't do that good of a job haha, but that's what happens when you bring a sword to a gunfight.

Few things that all DC/DCEU fans should consider.
Man of Steel came out with no one knowing it would start a universe (not definitively).
Second, MoS was *only* 7 years removed from Superman Returns. Superman had an image problem after Reeves and Superman Returns didn't really help that much… Man of Steel, however, set up a new age Superman for people like me to really enjoy. The more I watch Man of Steel, the more I like it and think it may actually be the best movie in the DCEU (so far).
Also, Suicide Squad breaking $700 million within the next 1-2 weeks is extremely impressive, no matter how any hater or Marvel fanboy spins it (and boy, do they try to spin). Suicide Squad had its flaws, but we didn't need to be so critical of it just because the "professional" critics were. I liked the movie and will definitely be buying it day one like I did BvS. This allows WB/DC to keep on and LEARN from their mistakes (and if you think they aren't, you need to look at all the changes that have been made even with JL) because they don't like critically panned movies anymore or less than the rest of us as they know how much potential money they still missed out on. Good job to Ayer, DC, WB, and the Suicide Squad cast. Suicide Squad had two major flaws, imo: Enchantress as the main villain, and lack of Joker… All in all, that's about it.

That image problem is definitely something a lot of people don't consider. Batman Begins underperformed in a lot of ways because it was released only 8 years after Batman & Robin. Luckily, word-of-mouth, DVD sales, and a terrific marketing campaign for The Dark Knight helped make the sequel a much more (rightfully) successful movie.

This is amazing. It even has the potential to surpass BvS domestically. Well cover me "confused." I particularly did not enjoy this movie, but the GA can't get enough, which makes me think they did the right move. With Geoff Johns overseeing things, the 2017 projects and forward will have the right blend of humor, substance, and style.....which will blow up this entire universe that much more. Anyways, what an amazing way to start the universe with just 3 movies in, proving that DC is unmatched.

The DCEU has a lot of fixing to do there's no question about that, but with only three flims DCEU has made more than 2.2 billion compare that to the MCU with its first three flims which was at 1.4 billion at the time, I hope Warner Bros will learn from its lesson an improve on the quality of their films.

You can't compare MCU p1 to DCEU p1. The films are almost 10 years about and the MCU has spent 13 films hyping up the shared universe franchise. The DCEU is just adding snow to an already massive snowball. If any of the mcu p1 films were released today, they would be in the 700 million to 1 billion marks.

    Apples to Oranges. Let's say tickets were selling at $100 per seat at Chicago Stadium. If Jordan lead the Bulls to 10 straight play-off wins, which lead to an increase in ticket sales by 50% over that 10 year period, then the Bulls add Lebron to the team in the 11th season and ticket sales increase by 5% in that same year. Now tickets are selling at $158 in Lebron's first year. Are you going to argue that he was more successful than Jordan because tickets are $58 more than when Jordan first started? That's the DCEU logic when comparing it to the MCU phase 1 with it's own phase 1.
    MCU did not ride on TDK success, by that logic both Green Lantern and Jonah Hex should have done as well.
    The MCU kicked off the cinematic shared universe and built it up from the ground up over 13 movies and 8 years. That hype has snowballed and continued to snowball. When DC announced the formation of their shared universe, it's natural that large fanbase would spill over into their ticket sales as well and the DCEU would enjoy the fruits of the MCU's labour. Not to mention it was kicked off with Superman and Batman (the most popular characters of all comic book history).
    Therefore, no, you can't compare P1 to P1.

      Dang, hate to say it Ryan, but he owned you there.
      I will say that Marvel became a success partly because of numerous circumstances concerning the other major players: Sony, 20th Century Fox, and of course WB.
      Sony was too busy rebooting Spider-Man in the aftermath of their falling out with Sam Raimi, meaning they had to literally construct new sets, create new costumes, recast everyone, change up the main crew, etc...basically it was a rapid production that took up most of their time.
      Fox was in a similar situation when Bryan Singer left to direct Superman Returns. Luckily, of course, they ended up having a savior in the form of Matthew Vaughn, who had shown a prior interest in the X-Men film franchise and was coming off the success of Kick-Ass. But, like TASM to a lesser-extent, the production took up most of their time in creating First Class.
      WB, on the other hand, was relying primarily on Batman, which was warped around Nolan's schedule who was busy doing Inception post-Dark Knight. Of course, they evidently did want to start a cinematic universe, and did so with Green Lantern, but Green Lantern failed because it didn't appeal to the 3 main audience groups you have: critics, fans, and general moviegoers. Critics disliked it because it was poorly-scripted. Fans of course hated it because it spat on the comics. And general audiences disliked it because it was poorly put together and flat-out unenjoyable.
      On a side note, Suicide Squad has succeeded because, while it doesn't appeal to critics due to its choppy editing/directing/tone, it does appeal to fans to an extent due to the numerous easter eggs and fact that this is the cinematic debut for many beloved comic characters. And it does appeal to general moviegoers due to the fun tone and likable characters.
      So, with all of their competitors in temporary disarray, Marvel had the opportunity to flood the market with their solo superhero films between 2009-2012, and build-up to the Avengers, which was revolutionary in terms of being the first of its kind.

    If you explain BvS's and SS's plot to someone like Nolan, Spielberg, Cameron, even Ridley Scott, they are going to laugh in your face. It's something written by a 12 year old, hell a 12 year old can probably write a better story. I bet you Nolan had a huge facepalm when Snyder showed him the script, Nolan even told Snyder not to do that dumb death because it wasn't the right time. And SS should have been unacceptable for Ayer especially after Fury and End of Watch. The guy obviously knows how to make a good movie, but he was the one that shut off his brain when he wrote SS's script. The cons in these two movies far and I mean by far outweigh the pros, more so for SS since even the action was shit.
