'Suicide Squad' gets knocked from #1, but shows no signs of slowing down at the box office

After three straight weeks in a row at #1, Suicide Squad has finally been dethroned at the box office. The horror movie Don't Breathe was #1 this weekend, but Suicide Squad was still #2.

Suicide Squad brought in another $12.1 million from 3,582 theaters for a domestic total of $282.9 million. Overseas, the movie about bad guys has made $353.1 million, for a worldwide total of $636 million!

Box office analyst Gitesh Pandya doesn't think there's any signs of Suicide Squad slowing down, and predicts $730 million before the movie leaves theaters. That would be extremely impressive, considering the movie got banned in China.

      I don't get this hatred for RT. The website itself is nothing wrong. It's probably one of the best tools out there for films because you can find reviews you like and eventually follow critics that share your views. Not everyone has boatloads of money to spend, so they got to make do with what they have.

      Use Metacritic, their system at least make sense, and some of the most acclaimed movies of all time were denied acclaim on release. I don´t even disagree with that many fresh or rotten RT ratings but why should i care about an anonymous number?

      Metacritic doesn't take into account all reviewers. Plus, it has the "avg rating" system RT uses. Or at least similar to it. People put to much weight on the RT %, when it should be on the score underneath. But again, it's about finding critics you agree with. Or better yet, use your favorite YT critics.

      That's a pretty broad statement. The broad public not caring about rt.. It's dependent on the situation. I mean all transformers have at least a B+ on cinemascore. cinemascore is a good indicator of what a target audience wants and thinks about the movie. in this case, people paid for what they got for and they keep coming back. that situation has very little to do with rt. Same thing with twilight.

      I have multiple critics i trust and follow but the last thing i will do is worshiping a number. I even agreed more with Siskel than Ebert, but he was the better writer. And that´s what film critics need to be about. Not proving a film quality or lack thereof.
      A film review is instead a case for that´s person´s opinion.

      some film criticism has turned to a giant cesspool or circlejerking where people come up with lazy excuses as to why people don't like films and stroking their own egos. finding some good solid critics are hard to find, but it's always good to just read up on everything on the internet in its entirety to really gauge opinion. watch and read some books on criticism. one of the thing that made ebert special was that he focused a lot on the message of films. he understood that a critic and filmmaker could and should have a good relationship if good discussion is to come about. this kind of positive endorsement is missing and now some critics just attack filmmakers. how is any positive discussion is supposed to come of that in the future? that connection is what's missing between critic and filmmaker today. ebert and scorcese were almost like best friends for crying out loud. so again, following your critic is important and making sure that you understand that these filmmakers put their heart and soul in these films. maybe it's an outdated message because maybe not as much heart is put into these massive studio films. that's up to you to decide.

You will have 2 Cs or 2,5/4s next to each other with one having the opposite meaning of the other. In a bipartisan system! They also have a weekly article called "rotten idea of the week" for upcoming films. What a solid base for future criticism! The site has been filled with clack-bait trash for ears now too.
      I could go on and the Average Rating isn´t even promoted despite being the "actual" score. I have thus grown to hate the practices of that site, despite liking it´s functionality before the turn of this decade. Dear WB (they own 30%), what have you unleashed?       I just watch movies. I gauge what I like from others and apply that what already feel about a film. If I thought a film was bad before with trailers and stuff, and people I trust don't like it, why should I spend my hard earned money on it? I got other priorities.

      1. be able to read that the big number is an approval rating, not a score out of 100
      2. understand that RT itself doesn't write reviews, it only collects them, same as Metacritic, the site that gives movies even lower actual scores than RT consistently, but is ignored for some reason by idiot fanboys.
      3. know that WB owned RT outright and as of weeks AFTER the release of BvS still owned a 30% share of RT. this knowledge would have forced another butt hurt conspiracy as it kills the main one dead lol.
      4. realize that nobody has to agree with them, especially on things to which they are themselves inherently biased and completely blind to it's many, many critical flaws.
      lol, "F da critics", "it's for da fans". well then, it isn't for anybody else, can't have it both ways losers. and the fan rating on SS on RT, IMDB (that was full of fake 9 and 10/10 reviews before the movie came out just like BvS) keeps dropping and is now around 6/10 across the board. so even the casuals and legion of die hards think it's mediocre. and those are the easy going, forgiving people.

      I am a fan of the critically beloved MCU and only "dislike" Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. (5/10).
      I tolerate to love the films + shows for what they are, not for a random number on some American site! They made 10 bil. by climbing a tough hill because the public cared for them and NO other reason. A trash tactic RT score can´t help any film´s box-office but the amount of flops with "fresh" scores is endless too.

Damn I was expecting the movie to Top at $550M- $600M when it came with the overly negative reviews and dramatic second week drop then the prediction of $650M came in and I was already surprise but now it got a legit shot at $700M. That's nothing shot t outstanding a year ago nobody outside of the fanboy sphere knew what the hell was the Suicide Squad, to see this movie strive like this against all odds( overly negative reviews, overly negative articles , no China release...) it's very gratifying especially for the people like me who actually enjoyed the heck of it

I would changed B&R to Forever and Returns to Superman IV. Catwoman fuhrer borders on psychological warfare! My co-workers HAD to have a conversation on the film after testing the library dvd for functionality. That´s how i first saw "enough" of it, after a full decade. It was that bewildering.

Superman Returns is underappreciated. Did the whole sequel/ soft reboot thing before a lot of other films did. And the 2015 Fantastic 4 is just worthless, switch that one in too.

  This looks to be a 1 entry per series list. Superman Returns (5/10) is "Certified Fresh" but not with me. It served too many masters, had a very problematic take on Superman, was way too long and the essential prequel comic was lastly better... Spider-man 3 (5/10) is an equal watchable mess but that series "worst" entry and your Fan4stic (4/10) at least tried. The chosen one though is worse than the Roger Corman disaster!
  Poor FF is 0 to 4 and isn´t currently allowed a comic due to infighting inside Marvel...

  B&R (4/10) at least commuted to go "full retard". It´s a 2 hour toy commercial and lead to SubZero + an awesome and unrelated one-shot comics collection.
  Forever (3/10) though didn´t even know what the hell it wanted to be. Val Kilmer had the charm of a brick and Batman forgot this own backstory in the A-plot. A mid 20s Robin is beyond insane, both villains were in a contest who who could be more cringe worthy and the Chase Meridian love triangle was beyond WTF worthy. B&R even had a good song that Snyder then perfected and the film forced WB to reconsider. Forever only gave us B&R...

650? No way the flim is already at 636, next week alone SS should make 6 million domestically ,9 to 10 million globally which should bring It's total to 655 million Globally before its Japanese release . But I agree 730$ million is a bit of a stretch 680-700 is more likely.

Japan´s numbers (15 mil shouldn´t be a problem) aren´t even in and Germany also just stared with 7 mil. That one will double too, as both enjoy a solid DC fanbase.
The film still has 2 to 3 weeks if draining worldwide life too. The crawl to 700 mil. is doable, and the film over-performed a bit, if we factor in the "loss" of China.
Few comic fans truly knew what the hell the property was about even 1 year back, but it´s an A list property now, awesome! A win for properly excepted diversity too.
The unknown merchandising numbers would be more interesting and Squad / Harley Rebith did crazy numbers due to the film´s timely release.

choices were cringe-worthy. Oh and for those of you celebrating, this
is the third film in the DCEU with the Joker, Harley Quinn, cameos by
Batman and Flash, and mentioning Superman. Imagine if this was the first
or second DCEU film, it would have disappointed even more. The film did
well without China financially but that just means the DCEU will
survive FOR NOW. The third and fourth Transformers films both made over
1.1 billion worldwide because the brand was stronger with foreign
audiences. Same with the DCEU now. Money does not equal quality
obviously!!!

Hmmm. Do you know how box office works? To say that the film will top at $650 million is kind of strange considering that it still has about 8 more weeks in theaters in North America alone. I won't be surprised if the film crosses this mark by Wednesday or Thursday especially now that its legs are showing in the US and it is doing very well internationally. I'll come back to this post in a few days.

From this coming Monday to Thursday SS will make around 1 million$ to 850 Thousand Dollars $ Per day so around 3 to 4 million by Friday, which will bring its total 639 to 640 by Friday by next weekend a 50% drop around the 6 million mark 646 million$ by domestically alone. I'm becoming more convinced that "legs" are a function of kid-friendliness to a decent extent, and neither of the DCEU films this year was amenable to the "take the kids to the movies" market.

Guess The Dark Knight/Rises was more kid friendly? That makes no sense. Super hero movies are for kids to go see them, almost every single time (except mainly for the r rated ones). BvS was long, but it didn't have anything besides boredom that would alienate kids. Suicide Squad, though, is almost catered for kids. Fast paced as fuck, quips and jokes every 2 minutes, cartoonish villain with a cartoonish plan, dumb and simplistic plot (without a lick of sense, but they won't even notice it)... The only trailer for suicide squad that would probably make parents wary of it would be the first one, and that one wasn't used in tv ads and whatnot.

A kid-friendly movie has a much higher re-watch probability though, especially with the parents. I always find a whole bunch of annoying kids at a marvel movie. I'd think this is true with everyone else at least half the time.

  Whatever parents did take their kids to BvS sure as hell didn't take them to watch it again but it's highly probable they did that with civil war. (Then there are those that forewent the movie altogether thanks to the crits. Most of whatever BvS did make after the opening weekend was through re-watches from people that liked it or the very few that thought of giving it a try.)
  BvS is darker than TDK or TDKRises. All of the darkness in TDK was due to the Joker and his philosophy, which isn't what kids are usually expected to understand fully, or at all. And even if they do, in their simplistic binary minds the Joker's the baddie and he'll be stopped by Batman in the end. Which he does. Similar analogies can be made with Bane in TDKRises. When all the darkness within a story emanates from a single-character, that character makes it much easier for kids to root against him/her.
  In BvS, though, you have a Batman that is actively planning to kill Superman. The same Batman—as far as kids are concerned—that so many of them look up to and rooted for in TDK and TDKRises are now forced to digest much darker implications. (There's a scene in the Ultimate Cut when Superman is being branded a suspect in the Capitol bombing and a kid and his mom are shown watching that news. He looks at his mother in shock and she just shakes her head in uncertainty. This is how kids would react to BvS while TDK would've been fun to watch) Then there's Lex. TDK might be darker in your opinion but to kids, especially in their parents's minds, it isn't the case.
  I expected adults to figure out the state Batfleck's in during the events of the movie but it's evident most haven't. It's foolish to expect this of kids.
  And as for the B.O stuff, even if the reviews were glowing, dare I say certified fresh, it's very likely BvS wouldn't have done as well as TDK/TDKRises because it's more generally a darker film.

    It didn't have strong word of mouth, therefore people who saw it didn't do so again, and people on the fence didn't see it at all.
    Word-of-mouth has nothing to do with people re-watching it since they've already seen it once. Or do you think people only re-watch movies because everyone else thinks it's good? What were you even trying to say in that sentence?
    Apparently it does matter how dark a 'superhero' film is, especially in this post-marvel-saturated market.

I really liked SS but just because a movie makes bank does not make it a classic or push out what critics had to say about it. If that were the case Transformers movies would be a classic franchise.

Wow...so can we safely assume that if it would had opened in China it would have made almost as much as BvS, if not even maybe more. This is very impressive for DCEU, as this was their B level characters. Each DCEU movie has been a major success, no matter how others try to spin it, numbers and the GA don't lie.

One thing is for sure if it wasn't for China SS would have definitely beaten Guardians of the Galaxy 772 million dollars gross for sure.

  I agree....because currently SS is beating GoG domestically. Also, this movie would have made a boat load in China, I honestly think even more than BvS over there for sure.

Batman v Supeman and Suicide Squad's success in the box office despite its low ratings from critics only goes to show how big of a gold mine Warner Bros had with these two films

And to drop the ball with both by rushing the product (BVS and Suicide Squad), trying to squeeze too many story lines in one film (BVS), and not fully trusting the director's vision (BVS and Suicide Squad) makes this an even bigger disappointment in my opinion

The hype for BVS was astronomical. And Suicide Squad, I had a lot of people who usually never watches Superhero films talk to me about how excited they were for the film.

Imagine if those films had actually lived up to its hype and WB had actually trusted Snyder and Ayer to make the film they intended, imagine how much money it would have banked the studio.

Yup. Suicide Squad is a legitimately poor film. Robbie's performance and choices were cringe-worthy. Oh and for those of you celebrating, this is the third film in the DCEU with the Joker, Harley Quinn, cameos by Batman and Flash, and mentioning Superman. Imagine if this was the first or second DCEU film, it would have disappointed even more. The film did well without China financially but that just means the DCEU will survive FOR NOW. The third and fourth Transformers films both made over 1.1 billion worldwide because the brand was stronger with foreign audiences. Same with the DCEU now. Money does not equal quality obviously.

    They respect the fan-base they have and they're only optimizing their production to make the projects a bit more profitable. JL won't be shooting in IMAX at all. They won't be changing their tune or the tone of their movies though you might point at the progressive tonal shift as something of a win for yourself and pat yourself on your back.

In retaliation, you resort to posting the hate. I am laughing at these pathetic attempts to kill the DC cinematic universe. Ha, ha, ha!!! Reboot?? More like Re-butted by the boxoffice performance. I think that WB are geniuses because the movie is so bad it's good. According to your argument/logic, it's just cut and paste with some random moving pictures of Batman. If that's the case then, why fix something that ain't broke. This is the formula you need to make money. Disneyfied marvel found their formula: a cop out with jokes and no real risk. To each their own means to entertain and succeed. I can enjoy both DC's and Marvel's cinematic universe despite their faults. You need to relax and enjoy life or find something new to get paid.

well Squad seems to continue the DCEU trend. A success - yes but still not as much as WB had hoped as I am sure they hoped for a 800 million worldwide haul or more. Yes a china release would have most likely boosted them to 850 million but they don´t have a china release so that´s hypothetical and all that matters is the actual numbers.

On the flipside Marvels Doctor Strange probably gets no china release as well (as it has even more supernatural elements then Squad did) so it will be interesting to see how Marvel fares with those conditions (not to mention that Doc Strange is not a well known character and the movie has no big characters like Joker or Harley and has to thrive without that bonus)

Then again it´s also a testament to WB`s incompetence that a Suicide Squad movie not only outperforms a SUPERMAN movie (without a china release!) but with a china release might even have outperformed a movie that has the freaking DC Trinity in it.
