Captain America: Civil War got off to a slow start, losing to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in both Thursday and Friday showings. But overall, it made up for it and ended up beating Zack Snyder's latest with $179.1 million in its first opening weekend. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice broke March records with a $166.1 million first weekend. Captain America: Civil War was estimated to open with over $200 million this weekend, but it fell short.

Once upon a time Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was supposed to open this weekend too. Warner Bros. set the date when Captain America: Civil War was just an "untitled Marvel movie". But when they found out they'd be competing again Captain America and Iron Man, they made the wise choice to move Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice up to March. This allowed both movies to have big opening weekends, something that might not have been possible if both opened on the same day.

    I don't know if its too much of fan boy battle, but overall I think its bad for both side honestly. I mean i feel like if this 2 movies was done 2 years ago, it would have easily exceeded over 200 million. I hope its not superhero fatigue but both movies going under 200 million is pretty bad in terms of expectations! they still made shit tons of money though so woot!

      I don't know about Superhero-fatigue, but the constant bashing of BvS and Snyder made me lose any enthusiasm I had towards Marvel flicks (went to see most of the mcu movies in theater - hadn't gone to see CW in theater, prob won't go).
      It's prob because the constant bashing comes from people who in the same breath give infinite praise to Marvel, and though I find a lot of Marvel movies enjoyable, there's a huge gap between the quality those people claim MCU to have and the actual quality of those movies.
      And I find that completely irritating.
      So maybe there's some kind of a gloating-fatigue or a Marvel-extremists-fatigue...
      Because I KNOW I STILL LIKE SUPERHEROES.
      I like them on my shirt, my TV screen and in theaters.
      Hell, I'm constantly fighting the urge to tattoo Wolverine, Batman and Superman on my fucking arm.

        I actually feel the same way. I've liked the MCU a bit so far but most of their movies are C movies for me. The only ones I think are B+/A- movies are Iron Man 1, Captain America: Winter Soldier, The Avengers 1, & Guardians Of The Galaxy. The way some Marvel fans have hated on Man Of Steel & Batman V Superman made me sick. Sure, everyone has the right to like or not like a movie. However, I literally know hundreds of Marvel fanboys that hated on both of the DCEU's movies just to hate them. It's like they didn't even give them a chance. Now before anyone starts getting angry about my comments let me just say that I am not talking about EVERY MARVEL FAN. Some friends I know that prefer Marvel to DC actually thought Man Of Steel and BVS were better than most of the Marvel movies, with some even preferring BVS to Civil War. I have not seen Civil War yet so I cannot comment on whether I like it or not and also how I think it stacks up against other movies (I've heard it's better than most of the newer Marvel films (Ant-Man, Iron Man 3, Thor 2, etc.). Anyways, I agree with this persons statement that Marvel probably lost quite a few million dollars on opening weekend due to a good percentage of their fans bashing DC over and over and OVER again until even now (and it's really getting to a point where I almost don't even click on articles that have to do with anything Marvel or DC anymore, which is sad). It just should not be this way. If you didn't like a movie, good for you. But, do you really have to make other people hate it before they even get a chance to see it? Or ruin it's box office numbers by spreading so much negative talk that people that aren't big superhero fans just completely skip out on seeing any superhero movie? I just hope when Suicide Squad comes around that Marvel fans actually keep an open mind and don't automatically shout it down as the worst movie ever. i know I've said a lot now but I'll leave with this thought. Why can't everyone just support ALL Superhero movies? Because the truth is, if Marvel or DC fails it will hurt both sides, not just one like some people like to imagine. The DCEU just started folks. Was it the best start it could have possibly had? Of course not. But there is potential there, a lot of potential. Let's just sit back, see a DC film directed by someone other than Snyder (both Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman next year) and then we can actually have movies that have been made by more than just one director that has a history of making divisive films.

        I truly believe BvS is an artful masterpiece.
        I know the things people complaining wasn't there - are there.
        It occupies my mind each day since I've watched it.
        Talking about it online and reading a lot of sophisticated and more educated people's opinion of it makes me discover additional aspects and layers to the film that alluded me at first (or second) viewing, and things I've noticed but could not explain myself, fall into context and get importent meaning.
        I truly believe it's a work of an auteur, and not that of a hack.

      What I mean is that there are any number of movies with terrible critic reviews that do great, BvS is one of them. Personal word of mouth has a lot more weight.

        According to Deadline it was a 61% drop so not as bad as BVS (for comparison Winter Soldier had a 57% drop)

        Well, I'm not sure that's completely accurate. Arguably, magic appeared in Thor & with Maximoff; both before Phase 3. It wouldn't have worked well (presumably) in the Iron Man solo movies. It's why he was scrapped in the first movie.

      Actually, it'd be more accurate to conclude BvS was made to compete with the (then unannounced) Marvel title in response to the success of Avengers.
      I find the notion Disney paid critics to be a humorous one. First, I heard the same concerns with the movie from non-critics. Why would Disney pay "civilians" off too?
      Second, iron sharpens iron. A worthy competitor makes you better.

    If you think Disney owns critics, then you're an idiot. General audiences don't know or don't care what critics think, and therefor don't really alter the financial success of a movie. Star Wars: The Force Awakens made a crap load of money because it was Star Wars and people love and recognize Star Wars, including critics… who also just thought it was a good movie. Yet each new installment in the Transformers franchise gets crapped on by critics, yet they also rake in money.
    We must also factor in marketability. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Man of Steel, Watchmen, 300, and pretty much every single Zack Snyder movie boasts dark, muted colors, heightened but brutal violence, and from the point of view of a kid, an overall "adults only" vibe. In fact, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice tried its hardest to be the anti-kiddie superhero movie; that turns off an entire demographic from seeing your movie. On the flip-side, most adults see superheroes as kids' characters, because they originated in comic books made for kids, and a lot of adults who see a superhero movie that takes itself way too seriously probably think that just looks stupid. Boom, another large chunk of your potential audience is not interested.
    If you ask me, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice was a poorly marketed movie (plus, that title is terrible), and when you factor in that the movie didn't resonate with most people who won't see it again or recommend it to their friends? Yeah, I'm surprised it made as much money as it did.
    So no, Disney doesn't buy off critics, and if they did, they would have been stupid to pay off critics for this one.

    Point is, that by this time, it's pretty damned obvious that critics did not treat BvS even close to fairly. Why? Why doesn't matter, does it? The fact remains that BvS is a fine movie worthy of something at least higher than the exaggerated hate that has been spewed on it. Souls like you that revel in the rough reception for the movie only solidify the sad fact that DC is getting misrepresented and mistreated at the cinema.
    However, I think the "Joke" will be on Disney/Marvel soon after Suicide Squad hits this summer. I have a feeling WB knew all along what was going to happen, which is why they opted to release BvS on Easter Weekend. They basically threw the left hook and Suicide Squad is the right cross coming. Better duck, Deadpool.

Oh I'm gonna see civil war. Heard it is amazing. (Both from non comic book enthusiasts.) so it shows reviews are a big way people who aren't biased chose to see a movie or not it's opening weekend. Or just say eh I'll see it later.

        I gave up on Disney marvel movies after the zillion villian in the disney universe getting humiliated. I mean a dance off defeated him. Disney marvel movies are fun but to me at least feel like im watching a kids hyper movie. If that makes any sense.         Iconic doesn't necessarily translate into box-office. Only Batman is the tried-and-tested IP here. Superman has had more cinematic squibs than any other superhero. This is Wonder Woman's debut. Hyped as it was, definitely it could've made more (had it gotten better reviews) but this ain't bad too. Maybe it will crawl to $900M somehow.

I don't think it's a bad movie but if you're not going to provide backstories for the characters, it can't be one of the first movies. Why has Batman changed in his views? A simple flashback to get to see The Joker killing Robin....tell me you wouldn't want to see that. That would've made a world of difference.

        It's just entertainment and art, there's no reason to try and dissect the film when you're not willing to also appreciate its merits. Art is open to interpretation, and that's all the comics are. These filmmakers didn't stray from the ROOTS of the characters, and that's what matters. It was a great movie that didn't spoonfeed the audience everything and didn't treat us like fools or five year olds.
        I liked it. Lots of people like it. That's what we call enjoying art and living in a free fucking country.

    Well the great action and show stealing performances of Black Panther and Spiderman conceals whatever the flaws. I don't think it's the best CBM or it's better than Winter Soldier, but it's awesome regardless.
    There are so many characters in this movie, and the directors have done such a great job of giving all of them spotlight.
    Meanwhile Superman was completely sidelined in his own movie. Batman was the real standout as usual and Lex riddler had a spotlight. Snyder couldn't do justice for three superheroes, and WB is handing him Justice League....

The whole Marvel vs DC thing needs to stop. Fans of either side or both need to realize that for these movies to succeed expectations financially then the reception of each is just as important. I'm not saying you falsely like something, but demand the best from each product. If BvS had performed better and been better received then I have no doubt CW would have reached the 200+ mil prediction. Falling short a few mil is one thing but 20 is kind of crazy. What affects one affects the other and what's good for one is good for the other.

  I'm not certain that's 100% accurate. They established tension between Stark & Rogers in Avengers. Feige stated it was a storyline he's wanted to do for a while, but needed the right time. Seeing BvS made him realize it was the right time.
  I'm not sure the title or theme was even announced when WB moved BvS to the same weekend.
  It sounds like you went into CW hating the MCU, let alone the movie. If so, why bother wasting the time and money?

        You realize that BvS killed a lot of interest in the DCEU right? If a Batman and Superman film can't beat a Captain America and Iron Man film then something is seriously wrong. BvS was always going to do somewhat well because its bloody Batman and Superman but considering how shit the film turned out it pretty much stopped itself from doing what WB needed it do what is match or beat The Avengers films.
        At this moment in time not a lot of people like BvS so interest in future films isn't that high (SS and WW will show if there's enough interest fully in this Universe). I'm a massive DC fan and even i'm not hopefully for JL now. End of the day when people would watch and enjoy a film what has Captain America as the lead and title character over Batman then there's clearly a problem.
        Anyway be a fanboy all you want and ignore the hard truth (going by your comments on this article its clear thats hard for you) i don't really care to be honest.

        Agree. But I believe Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman will be fine at the box office. Wonder Woman was the standout in BvS and Suicide Squad kinda has its own flavor and while referencing Superman and all that, isn't really connected in terms of the story. I think Justice League and a Man of Steel sequel will feel a big hit at the box office because of BvS, but not really the other solo ventures.

Bvs has an extended cut so you can bet thatll make plenty of money in digital sales. Man of steel and ant man were close in theatrical "profit" even with mixed reviews. I don't know how any Marvel fan can think this is good news from a competitive standpoint. Let's apply some facts to these numbers. CW is a summer blockbuster, and movies in the summer historically tend to better box office wise, facts. This is MCU's 13th movie, so they are pretty established, facts. CW was really avengers 3, facts. CW had excellent critical reviews which helped tremendously, facts. Now, BvS opened in March, had the most negative reviews you can think of, it's only the second DCEU movie, and with all of this CW managed to only beat them by 15M, which is pretty much nothing in the grand scheme of things. Imagine if BvS opened in the summer, with excellent critical reviews, and it was the 13th film of DCEU? Marvel zombies can try to spin it any way they want, but these are facts, and I would definitely not be clapping to this news if I were a marvel fanboy. All the DCEU needs is one critically praised movie, and they will overtake this whole genre, like they did with the The Dark Knight Trilogy. This, is MCU's biggest fear competition wise.

  It was supposed to do all this and more thanks to a huge budget, top notch actors and such, but it failed.

      Barely beating it? 15 more million for the first weekend, and in it's second week in release internationally, it is 50 million behind from BvS. Not every MCU team up movie will make more than 200 million on it's first weekend, especially if it's called Captain America first and foremost. The fact is, BvS opened in a 4 day weekend, and it still fell short of CW. You can't really just excuse it like that. BvS failed because it fell short of any and all expectations. Civil War, in the other hand, was a pretty good movie that made almost everyone satisfied with it.

    MOS had a budget of 225 million, BvS 250 million. Iron Man 1 and 2 cost only half of that. Marvel made a similar profit to DC but invested much less money to achieve it.

  Dude, I love DC as much as the next guy, though I also love Marvel, but the fact is Civil War is going to break a billion, and it's simply going to make a lot more than BvS. BvS was poorly edited, poorly written and poorly directed. It got what it deserved. Call them marvel zombies all you want, but ya'll defending a movie that really does not deserve to be defended makes you zombies. I liked the movie just fine, but it was just filled with issues to the brim. I really hope Snyder learns his lesson, and fans should learn to be critical, not apologetic.

Critically and financially they are in control and until WB can do their characters justice The Russo Bro's. will continue to pile on with their Infinity War sequels.     A coherent storyline that isn't choppy and fragmented, one that relies not only on aesthetics and epic cinematography. Take The Town or Argo as an example of perfect placed story beats that move and enhance with each character, setting and plot. Hence the reason I'm optimistic of Ben being EP, because that's a guy who knows how to do that right.

        I agree. For me, I hate the objectivist characterisation of Kents, it was so bad IMO. The tornado scene was stupid too, it was hilarious rather than dramatic.
        And I'd have changed the end where Superman destroys the satellite, it was such a dick move as if there wasn't enough destruction already. I'd have replaced it with Superman helping rebuild Metropolis and rescuing the injured. It'd have established Superman's character right there, and made him into a likeable guy in one scene alone. The film would have scored atleast 70% with that scene alone and made a $100 million more.

Is reports of Ben Affleck being humiliated and embarrassed by the response to BvS conjecture? Is his facial expressions when asked how he feels about the critical reactions to BvS conjecture? You do realize that CA:CW will be passing BvS in the box office this weekend? It was released in the foreign market in 4/27 and then released in North America the following week unlike BvS which had a global release so it hasn't been opened in North America for a full week yet so when you say it's been out for 3 weeks is completely inaccurate especially since the North American Market is the biggest one. The writing is on the wall son, you just gotta learn how to read.

  BvS was one of the most hyped movies ever made. That's why it made almost as much as CW at the start. There's no reason for a MCU fanboy to be disappointed. It's already hit 678 mil and has great word of mouth. It will likely beat BvS within one week max and won't drop off like BvS did. It will cross 1 bil easy and WB should be embarassed that they couldn't deliver with the 3 most popular heroes in pop culture.
  They won't "retake the whole genre" with one film. Especially now that plenty of people saw BvS and were turned off by the universe. It did the very opposite of Thor, The First Avenger, and IM. It didn't build up hype for the DCEU, it just clouded it in uncertainty.

  Here's a fact for you Civil War already 200 million behind BvS and its only just come out (i'm including other places and not just US when i say this), its catching up fast and will no doubt at least make Age Of Ultrons numbers. A film with Captain America and Iron Man, two characters what 10 years back were B-List at best are destroying a film with Batman and Superman in it together for the very first time. I would be pissed if i was WB right now as they clearly wanted the praise and money what Avengers got with BvS.
  Oh yeah Civil War is not "Avengers 3" its very much the 3rd Cap film what just happens to have a load of Avengers for one huge battle (what destoys what ever BvS throwed at you). The film is mostly about Cap, Tony and Bucky and not the Avengers. As someone who has seen it twice so far i can easily tell its a sequel to WS while following on from AoU.

That means it's going to be a huge hit, or it should have at least. BvS had the rare opportunity to open all over the world at the same time, Civil War didn't. Personally Civil War was a good movie...but just like BvS wasn't as bad as it was made out to be, Civil War wasn't as perfect as its being made out to be. As usual, the villains are an afterthought and become plot devices for the heroes' arc. But goddamm it, if Spidey and T'Challa weren't awesome!
I loved the action scenes though don't think they can hold a candle to what transpired in BvS. On the other hand, the character work between Cap and Stark was definitely better than the one between Clark and Bruce.
So overall I think Civil War is the better movie than BvS, but not by a big margin. Really hyped for Dr Strange and Suicide Squad and my fanboy moment was seeing the Spider signal in the credits! Never thought that horrible thing (seriously who came up with that?) could make me so excited for a Spidey movie!

  I liked the Civil War action more than BvS. The Doomsday fight sucked IMO. The Batman vs Superman fight was cool, but again the fight was what Zack Snyder thinks of Superman.
  I got the sense of people getting hurt in CW, that wasn't the case in BvS at all. WW didn't look like she was getting hurt despite being pounded by Doomsday, Superman didn't show any bruises other than the scratch on his face, but Batman was the worst offender.
  Dude was like unlimited stamina. He fought and defeated Superman, he fought a dozen thugs, got shot multiple times and yet it didn't have any effect, got stabbed and yelled once and forgot about it. Then rescued Martha, survived a plane crash, survived Doomsday fight with unrealistic grappling action, it was like he is indeed a meta *cough* Deathstroke fan theory *cough*

Personally I think Zach Snyder is bad for the DC universe and so is Warner Bros. Hopefully Affleck can gain more control of the these current DC projects and make the future right. But as long as WB is involved w/ DC I see the potential for trouble. Only Nolan was able to make superb DC films with WB.

Civil War was a great film, it's up there with Winter Soldier and the first Avengers for me. Also really enjoyed this version of spidey- just the kind of fresh air I needed for the Marvel Universe as it just felt stale for me before.

        I saw it pd, that's why I'm saying what I'm saying. Without Bucky Cap would have no purpose in being in the movie, just as almost every other character in this movie, Marvel now has to rely on their characters to do an "entertaining" movie. Just take out Spiderman and Ant-man and the story is exactly the same, Hawkeye has nothing to do here, thus not engaging Scarlet Witch in the fight (so same for Vision), Black Widow doesn't care she's with the government. The story is Tony (with his friend War Machine) vs Bucky (and his friends Cap & Falcon) and Black Panther triyng to find his dad's killer.

  I read every single Steve / Bucky as Cap issue since Brubaker took over and Cap3 was indeed an Avengers film. A very bloated and frustrating one!
  Cap 2 is nearly as good as Dark Knight (the ending should have been darker though) but this 100% wasn´t. Spider-man 1/2 are better Spydey films btw.

Also, I don't get it.....BvS broke box office records for March, and all the internets sites posted how it "underperformed". CW breaks no record in the summer, and all the internet sites are posting how it has "blown the box office away." If a DCEU movie were to make 181M on opening weekend with excellent critical praise for a summer blockbuster...they would only be talking how it should have made more given that critics liked it. The DCEU will have to put up Star Wars numbers in order for people to admit this bias, smh.

  Civil War already made more money than Man of Steel, and will make a billion or so.
  The profit so far is lower than expected but still huge, bigger than Iron
  Man 3 and BvS. Critics love it, audiences love it so it's gonna have legs.
  BvS broke the records it did only because it was released everywhere on the planet simultaneously before word of mouth that the movie stinks could spread.
  It did spread eventually and that's why BvS had the biggest 2nd week dropoff in history.
  That dropoff made it underperform, the movie had no legs.

  Saw an article that said paraphrasing, "Civil War Soars as BvS Plummets" when BvS is in its like 40th day in theaters and only is playing in 1500 compared to over 4000 at release.
  News sites bash it because they think that is the thing to do to get clicks and views.

  This is exactly how it is. Unfortunately, people are going to compare Justice League to the first Infinity War film as well... Even though the releases are like six months apart, I have no doubt that people who want traffic for their sites and just mere haters are going to justify comparing Infinity War to JL.. If there's going to be a comparison, it should be between Justice League and the first Avengers film, nothing else.

Here are the facts:
- BvS certainly should have did $200M+ on opening weekend
- BvS should have gone over $1B+
-CA:CW should have did $200M+ on opening weekend
- Although CA:CW WILL go over $1B, it will not likely beat the first Avengers' overall BO in spite of being a much better film
On top of that, X-Men: Apocalypse is not tracking very well and will probably under-perform. Fox wants $1B out of that movie. I doubt it gets there.
I think that we may be seeing the very first stages of the dreaded "superhero fatigue" that many have expected. By the end of the summer, I predict that mainstream sites will be talking about the subject

Hockey is going on right now, it impacted Age of Ultron's numbers last year too and that was an actual Avengers movie. Either way scoffing at $181 million is just idiotic, especially when Disney projected $175.

      I'm okay with Apocalypse, the voice is off though. I'd have liked something of Josh Brolin Thanos like. And yep, Mystique leading is really a turn off for me, and she doesn't even stay in her original form, keeps switching to. J. law
      I hope they make Cyclops the leader later.

  well it will certainly not be as successful as Civil War or BvS because for some reason the X-Men films never really draw such huge numbers. Days of Future Past was the first movie that grossed over 700 million which was a huge deal for the series. The most successful movie in the franchise is Deadpool (an R rated move !) so that´s saying lot. Maybe X-Men is just too heavy for the general summer crowd or it´s a bit too dark. Also these films were never really the big sommer blockbuster epics like Marvels films or Transformers.
  But most importantly X-Men: Apocalypse will have to do without Fox' two biggest box office draws - Wolverine and Deadpool. Yes Wolverine has a cameo in the movie but he is not there in a starring role and the marketing is not focusing on him.
  Now can Apocalypse beat BvS and Civil War critically? That´s a WHOLE other story. Bryan Singer is THE pioneer and godfather of modern superhero cinema. Every single one of his X-Men movies received very good reviews, most importantly each (of his) movie received better reviews then the last. Days of Future Past was the best received X-Men movie to date and the only one to crack the magical 90 % mark on rottentomatoes (and the 8.0 on IMDB was not too shabby either), something not even Deadpool was able to do.
  So yeah that is one hell of a track record for Singer and his X-Men films. The man just really knows how to combine mythology, story and action. He has NEVER failed with his X-Men films.
  That´s why I am absolutely positive that X-Men: Apocalypse will EASILY beat BvS in reviews and audience reception. Can it beat Civil War ? That one is tough seeing as Civil War currently holds a 91 % at RT, a 8.5 on IMDB and a user score of 92 % on RT. That´s really really hard to beat.
  I expect Apocalypse to land around the 90-92 % mark on rotten (both critics and users) and around 8 on IMDB.

  Well, I don't question it. First Class was awesome, so was the Wolverine 2013 solo and Days of Future Past was phenomenal, it's in my top 5 CBMs.
  It doesn't look promising right now, but it could be a surprisingly good.

    Because the critics who actually were OBJECTIVE and judged movies by the same standard are either a dying breed or are few and far in between. Now all we have mostly are "critics" who sound more like fanboys that are employed by the movie studios marketing team.
