Batman-On-Film: Yes, there's tension between Zack Snyder and Warner Bros. on 'Justice League'

Over the weekend a report came out that said director Zack Snyder and Warner Bros. were fighting over Justice League. On the latest Batman-On-Film podcast, founder Bill "Jett" Ramey confirmed that he heard the same thing from his own sources:

"Birth.Movies.Death is reporting that there's a lot of tension between the executives at Warner Bros. and director Zack Snyder, who is currently filming Justice League in the UK. I can confirm that I've been hearing that as well."

This is certainly a story worth following now that a second, more respected source in the Batman community, has come forward and said they heard the same thing.

Let's look at the facts: Zack Snyder has made two DC movies -- Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Both underperformed at the box office, were disliked by most critics, and got mixed reactions from audiences. Now Warner Bros. is giving him another $250+ million to make a third movie. It's not hard to see why Warner Bros. might be taking a more hands-on approach, which could certainly cause some tension between both sides.

        Just towards the "Texas" comment: Many media companies and production houses have started to move branches to Texas for its central location and business taxes. Especially around Austin the business is booming. Also, the internet allows you to cultivate said relationships anywhere, so it's not far off to consider that that can happen.

    Hey thst makes me wonder Chris, i know this us a hobby for u and u generally get ur articles from just different news sources, but would u ever be interested in expanding to the point of acquiring your own private sources and obtaining scoops and whatnot? Cant remember for certain but i do believe youve had such articles before but pretty rarely, but thought u mostly just use other news sources for most.         Uslan being an executive producer doesn't mean anything- that's usually done as a way of giving people with some ownership of a character a piece of the pie. Are you going to tell me Jon Peters had any say during Man of Steel or Batman v Superman? He was an executive producer as well.

You have probably built up some conceive notion/ideas of how you want the film to be and when it didn't match what the film actually is, then you have a problem.         And by the way, what HISHE does is to exposed the things that the writers and filmmakers get wrong, and laugh at it, like that Jolly rancher scene with a senator, or the MARTHA stupid thing, with that supid Batman behavior so out of character. and that rushing doomsday act, and that superman death scene.
        nobody says Batman had to kill doomsday but one thing get right is that batman could pulled that off without the need of superman cheesy sacrifice.

        That batman way of judge situations and people, is so stupid, like a teenager Batman that get this stupid selfish machiavelic idea of killing superman but later on he got a sudden change of heart, oooh poor baby.
        about the emp.. remember, Batman shoot him with kryptonite Gas so he disable doomsday, so Batman could easily finish the job. or if they want superman to do it (if zack is so stubborn about it) then superman could easily threw the spear, I mean, thats why they are made for.
        But not... that is not the way to end a battle with doomsday. the death of superman was made to showed the endurance of Superman in body and mind until the death. He is, his greatest challenge, he´s opposite.
        Zack used the worst moment to bring in on.
        if they wanted to used some muscle they could easily end it with a Superman clone that starts to make superman look bad, making batman confronts him to death, until the superman clone becomes bizzaro and lex gets exposed, then our heroes battles this creature.
        kill bizzarro, get lex, but zods body is gone..., we only see a glympse of a chamber, and what it looks to be doomsday to be in hibernation.
        I meaan, there are many ways to make the film to work, but no, they ending making a Mellodrama

  I actually have the same feeling. I can go off two or three hands how many things I liked about this film, but I can unfortunately do the same with what I didn't like. So, to answer your question: Unless you're a troll, yes!

  Yeah it's okay, one of the biggest reason I'm mad at the film was the wasted potential and the few awesome stuff like Batman's warehouse fight, the Knightmare sequence, Bruce's view on Superman's metropolis fight, and Superman's "This is my world" speech.
  But it also definitely felt like Zack doesn't care for or understand Superman, with Superman supporter Jimmy Olsen dying, how they handled Lex Luthor, and Superman shoving the warlord through the wall.

  I left the theater feeling very much in the middle. Time and memory hasn't been kind to the film, though, much like what happened for me in the weeks following Man of Steel. I feel no pull to watch either film a second time. All I remember is darkness and grit. I later realized that I had forgotten the death of Superman, because it had zero impact. "Oh yeah... that happened in that movie."
  DC films don't need to copy Marvel films, but for Pete's sake, let our heroes be heroic. Let them soar. Let them inspire us!

so much for "it´s just a bullshit rumor made up by internet losers" lol I wonder what new excuses the fanboys will come up with now and how long it will take until people on this site start attacking this site again as well.
On another note, Jim Lee posted the first post rebirth artwork for Suicide Squad and it´s more than obvious that DC wants to align the comics more with the movies and TV shows now. the SS lineup is identical to the movie and particularly Harley and Boomerang have been redesigned to reflect their movie incarnations. I am actually surprised they didn´t make Deadshot black now as well.
Most of the costume redesigns are very obviously based on movie/TV versions. Wonder Womans costume is now basically a mix of Jason Faboks WW and Gals WW. Superman basically has the DCEU suit now and Batman looks also an awful lot like Affleck now (though the symbol is different).
It´s most obvious with the new costumes for Green Arrow and Supergirl which are basically identical to the TV show versions.
I really wish DC would be a bit more creative instead of just blatantly capitalizing on their live action fame.

  What? How does Batman look like Ben Affleck's version? His cowl, cape and gauntlets are literally blue. If anything it's more of a callback to the style of "Hush", with the Batsymbol and purple interior of the cape taken from the New 52's latest costume.

      And Batman #51 just slightly modified the suit that had been there since Batman #1, by making the cowl more beak-looking at the nose, changing up the bat symbol and adding purple to the interior of the cape to give a callback to Batman's purple gloves.

        there is no blue. Its grey like the Jim Lee suit in 2002. It only has this blue-ish shimmer in the promo image because of the lighting. It will be grey in the actual book.

Do you really need "sources" to confirm something like this? I loved MoS and BvS but they were divisive movies that under-performed and weren't necessarily family friendly. OF COURSE WB(or anybody else) would start to become a bit more firm in how the DCEU movies are being developed. You can't hire Zack Snyder and think you're going to get a mile-a-minute yukfest like JJ Abrams would give you. He's not that kind of director.
If you want great visuals, just hire a stupendous DOP and get a director whose vision aligns more with that four-core audience you're looking to capture.
I just want the DCEU to succeed. I want to get to a point where we're getting movies like Lobo, Doom Patrol, Metal Men, Challengers of the Unknown, Vixen, Booster Gold, Blue Devil, Justice League Dark; these movies that don't rely on freakin' Batman to get attention.

Completely understandable on WB's end of things. It comes down to the $ at the end of the day. I just can't help but feel bad for Zack after the executives apparently gave this movie a standing ovation and great feedback, only to come back and argue with him about his direction.

  Not saying the films perfect but i absolutely love it. It really is my current fav cbm n im not afraid to admit it. So i totally feel bad for Snyder taking so much shit. He gave us an amazing WW, the BEST BATMAN ON FILM HANDS DOWN in my opinion, and i even love his superman and i really believe he'll only get better. He was suppose to have a series of films so hes still being developed. I dunno, i like Snyders films for the most part.

    I love BvS but they need to get rid of Zack snyder. sometimes i feel like he chooses to do scenes that look cool over character development. He also doesnt really understand superman and how to make him work on film. Batman was amazing but he didnt have the same moral values that make him be batman. Wonder woman was perfect so nothing against that. I feel like they should replace Zack with ben affleck. Hes shown time and time again that he is good with an ensemble. and he loves these characters and hes a brilliant director.

    Stop trying to excuse the movie mistakes with the "4 hour extended version", the core plot is stupid and there is nothing they would add that could fix him.
    Batman vs superman was stupid to begin with, general audiences like avengers because they identify first with single characters, then with the avengers as a whole.
    My non-comic reader friends thought christian bale was still batman no one explained the general public why was Ben affleck batman.

as i said before, that is nothing abnormal when it comes to blockbusters, studios always want to have more control over directors' vision, look at marvel, they already had a lot of issues with their own directors, jon favreau who once opened up about the hell that was making IM2 with marvel's suits breathing on his neck, joe johnston, alan taylor who wasn't happy either while making thor 2, edgar wright who flat out resigned from antman and even the all mighty joss whedon left after AoU even saying that he wasn´t happy with his own product, citing "tension" with marvel. so what if WB wants more control over snyder´s JL, does that mean something that has never happened before? no. so let it be and we'll see.

    that is as long as marvel let the russos do their thing, i mean, they were interviewed not long ago and they're aware that marvel is repeating the same overused formula over and over again to quote them: "people will tell you they love chocolate ice cream.... until you start feeding them with it 5 times a week" so marvel is kind of a ticking bomb when you think about it.

      yeah, there's no risk whatsover in marvel movies, on the other hand snyder really puts his own cojones in the line for what he wants on his movies, and that's exactly where all this tension things comes from, a huge studio like WB would want to have more control over a multimillion dollar movie universe anytime. also keep into account that WB can´t snuff their director's voice just like that, they also big part of the appeal of watching these movies, so they have to find a middle point anyway.

      And honestly, while I enjoyed Winter Soldier, I didn't see it as the game changer that everyone claimed it as. Hell, I was surprised when I found out that it didn't make $1 billion at the box office. It was really a weak spy thriller with a premise that is really stupid when you think about. I still enjoy it though

I wouldn't say MoS got 'slammed' by critics. It has a close to 60% on RT. It mostly had a mixed to positive reaction. OFCOURSE you will have those haters who absolutely hate it. There are ones for all movies. BvS got slammed. Please don't over exaggerate. But yes, both underperformed. How a movie called 'Batman vs Superman' didn't instantaneously make 2 Billion is still a mystery to me.

  Really who thought it would make 2 billion? Maybe in the 1980s it would make the equivalent of 2 billion but now there are so many more entertainment avenues that I don't think any movie can make 2 billion.

    If the movie was at 98-100% and word of mouth was insanely good, it could've reached 2 billion, it's possible.

      No, not even Star Wars VIII will make $2 billion. Unless inflation rises more, not even justice league or avengers will make that either. Titanic made that and with inflation it's more like 3 billion, but movies have to be grand and appeal to pretty much every single demographic. People who liked action saw titanic, people who are into romance, who are into history, who are old and remember those times, people who are young and want to experience those times etc.
      Avatar made over $2B bc of new 3D and the grand spectacle of CGI and expanding global markets. Star Wars: TFA made $2B bc it's the continuation of movies that are literally the most influential movies ever 30 years later. It's got to have an extraordinary circumstance to gross that much. Just batman and superman together won't guarantee $2B by no means. It's got to have another factor to do that. It has to appeal to a more broad audience. It would have to be crowd pleasing, light in tone, great story that multi-generations can all see, and have been more of a "must see" movie and multiple times too.
      If it was directed by someone else and had a more lighthearted tone to it, it could have made 1.2-1.5 billion but again, for $2B, it has to be extraordinary. That's why Avatar 2, Star Wars VIII won't make that amount because they don't have the same magic that the previous film had. It will have to be some new movie entirely that does that, unless one of those sequels can appeal to the same audiences and more.

  To be fair, I think it's mainly because of the way the film was marketed. It was so tonally different to most superhero films and more in line with Watchmen if anything. A film featuring a racoon and talking tree did so well because of the tone of it's marketing and the Marvel logo that was attached to it. It appeals to kids, and B v S was a lot darker. Batman V Superman was trying to be fresh and try something different with these iconic superheroes.

  It's a very dark movie with very adult themes, first hour has little action. Critics reviews didn't help either. My local paper called it superdumb... I want to punch that person in the face honestly. LOL
  I think audiences were expecting a Marvel popcorn movie. Kid friendly stuff..

    The good thing with popcorn movie is they can get away with sub-par plot and performances all they need to do is to be entertaining. Going with the darker route needs more than that and i commend DC for That but they need to do a better job than bvs

Zack Snyder needs to focus on his movie plot, like seriously. Other than that his movies are good. I think he's lost himself in little details, subplots. In bvs there was so many little details in characters such as superman walking into courtroom by walking and he opens and closes that little door just like any other people. It looked very very human thing haha. Even senator Finch noticed that.
If he didn't put any subplots in the movie and focused on main thing it would've been so much better. Also WB should've put a pressure on him. He literally made 4 hour R rated superman batman film and wb just let it happen.
I love Zack Snyder, i like what he's doing. He's the right director. Comicbook movie deserves directors that have actually huge balls like zack.

  Zack Snyder's an Internet troll who got lucky enough to become a Hollywood movie director. I thought he was a genius for 300 and watchmen but then I realized it's really not all that hard to film a comic book virtually frame by frame. At the time I thought it was awesome but I shouldn't give him too much credit as a filmmaker considering that whenever he goes away for making straight up comic book adaptations the movies, well, let's just say they suck.
  I don't think Warner Bros. should fire him though. Maybe he could clean the toilets at the studio?

My two cents: loved MOS and BvS.
Would I be ok with seeing Snyder's continued vision? Absolutely.
Would I also be ok with new direction going forward? Yep.
Not sure why every tidbit of info has to be seen as a catastrophic event. I simply want to see DC characters on screen and have another option besides the the Fox Marvel Universe and MCU.
One way or another, we're going to get more DC films. Worst case scenario, which I don't think will ever happen, is that they cancel all DCEU movies and start over in a few years. At the end of the day, these are just movies.

  Same here. The stories and characters from the DCEU are all there. They're mythic and powerful, but they can also be crowd-pleasers that make you smile, snicker and laugh.
  For me, MoS and BvS are the movies that I personally wanted. Ever since reading Kingdom Come, I wanted a superhero movie to address the elephant in the room: the world wouldn't necessarily embrace superhumans. In fact, in all likelihood, the world would sink into chaos.
  The sad thing is, though, that I don't think the mass market wants to see superheroes in that light. They want more white/black versions. They want good guys really good and bad guys really bad and they don't want a middle ground where you as an audience member have to sit there and consider all of these moral and ethical concepts. They just want bright, colorful, quip-slinging superpeople flying around and punching stuff. They don't want bigger ideas in their superhero movies. They want to turn their brains off and just be distracted for 90-120 minutes at a time.
  At this point I'd be fine if WB went a little lighter with the DCEU, keeping the gravitas and epicness of the god-like characters, but making more of the characters more human and relatable.
  Even though I loved MoS and BvS, I have to admit that I would've written them drastically different, but I admire Snyder's personal vision instead of lambasting him for not giving me the exact movies that I wanted.

    You hit the nail right there. People want comic book movies to embrace the silliness, even though movies that did that in the past were lambasted by everyone. They don't realize that the the "realistic" tone, i.e. how the real would react to actual superheroes, opens the door for extraordinary stories. Yeah there will be depressing moments but I always thought audiences love it when the hero is able to pick themselves back up after hard times. BvS showed the Trinity uniting to fight a great evil despite two members giving up on the world and one who is trying to find his place in the world.

      I personally loved the tone of MoS and BvS but had I written those movies I would've peppered them with more "human" moments. Not removing the seriousness, but adding some levity.
      I don't know. If I had time I'd write an MoS spec script. The plot wouldn't be that different, but certain things would've been different. You just have to have the audience walk out of a Superman movie feeling hope, pumped and with a smile on their faces. For MoS, I DID, but I understand that modern audiences have a different sensibility.

        I absolutely hated MoS when I first saw. It pissed me off to the bone; even dad was surprised at how mad I was. It's grown on after a few years. It does have hopeful and inspiring moments. I don't want to sound blasphemous, but I would say that the "Flight" soundtrack is THE theme song for Superman as of today.
        For me, I would've tweaked the dialogue between Pa Kent and Clark when they were discussing about the school bus. I see what Johnathan meant when he ,"maybe", but I would've had him tell Clark that he's still proud of him for saving those kids. I agree that MoS should've had more human moments especially between Clark and his parents during his childhood.

        I think perhaps make it more clear that Zod was causing the destruction of Metropolis and have Superman starting notice the civilians in danger. And perhaps have the family who nearly got vaporized by Zod come over to Superman, thanking him for saving their lives, reminding Superman that while killing Zod is traumatizing, it did stop the madness and save lives.

I myself have given up with superhero movies before its not until i watched tdkt that i gravitated with cbm. The problem with zack is that he seems to think that people loved tdkt bec.. Its dark and different from marvel(well, maybe some people do). For me i loved nolans batman bec. Of terrific performances, great story and characters we can connect to. It would be super dissapointing to me if they followed the generic superhero formula after this.

      Yeah, WB needs to find a balance. They need to keep open the concept of the DCEU movies having a harder edge than the Marvel ones but ALSO feel free to maybe add scenes of levity with a lot of the seriousness. Give people more than just a sense of awe, which MoS and BvS did in spades, but also bring us down to Earth every now and then and remind us that we are supposed to like the heroes along with hating the villains.

Like in MoS the first time superman fly, it should have been a moment and of pure glee but it seems they're holding back emotions. Even they didnt add anything in that movie it would have been Great if they just flesh out the right emotions. Zack has a great group of actors in that movie i dont why he didnt take advantage of that

I want the DCEU to be succesfull both critically and financially but that's not going to happen while snyder is directing the big team up films ( BvS, JL pat1 , Jl pt2 ) meanwhile you have very talented ppl (and better directors overral ) like Ayer , Affleck and Wan handling the solo movies and/or lesser known characters . Makes no sense to me how come a B list director is given an A++ project where hundreds of millions are in stake ?? .

      Not only do the critics not like the movie, general audience didn't love it either. It received a CinemaScore of B. I wanted BvS to be critically successful because that'll lead to more money earned in the box office which then leads to better future for DCEU.

  What will happen with this film? Bluray sales records. Eventually critics and fans will start to sing a different, happier song about it. There is no way in hell BvS deserves a lower rating on RT than the Transformer movies. And that's just one for instance.
  The rest of you that want to keep piling on, remember that every time you do, you ruin the chances for more DC movies getting done the DC way, and we'll end up with either fewer movies or more movies that use the Marvel cookie-cutter formulas. Then we end up with ZERO DC movies really, when you stop and think about it.
