Report: Zack Snyder and Warner Bros. are butting heads over 'Justice League'

Update 05/06/15: Sounds like there was some truth to this report. Warner Bros. just brought in Ben Affleck to oversee Justice League!

Yesterday we learned that Warner Bros. and The Flash director Seth Grahame-Smith parted ways over creative differences, but according to a new report from Birth.Movies.Death there are lots more problems in the DC Extended Universe.

Sources at WB tell me that this is just one part of what's going on behind the scenes at the DC movieverse. Zack Snyder and Geoff Johns were taken aback at critical and audience reaction to Batman v Superman, I'm told, and WB execs have found themselves at odds with Snyder over his vision for Justice League and the DC movieverse going forward. Of course Justice League was scheduled to start shooting mere days after BvS was released, which meant WB couldn't take any definitive action - like removing Snyder or delaying the movie to make changes - without poisoning the box office for BvS. The result? Lots of fights between Snyder and the WB execs, and lots of pressure from Burbank on Snyder, who is shooting in London.

That's not good! And there could be another director shake-up in the DCEU. Citing multiple sources, Birth.Movies.Death says that director James Wan is feeling pretty nervous about his Aquaman movie. Update: James Wan responds to the rumor?

Now I know what you're thinking. Birth.Movies.Death? Didn't they report that Suicide Squad was undergoing reshoots to add more humor? Yes, and they didn't get that one 100% right. But they were the first site to report that Suicide Squad was spending millions on reshoots, which David Ayer later confirmed was being put towards more action.

This is just a rumor, but after the negative response to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and missed box office opportunities, it's not hard to see that there could be some tension between Warner Bros. executives and Zack Snyder -- a man who they just gave another $250+ million to for Justice League. Let's not forget... R-rated Deadpool movie made more in the US/Canada than a PG-13 Batman and Superman movie! That is insane.

I'd never waste your time with BS rumors from unreliable sources, and I don't think I'm doing that here.

  I don't see why there would be any head-butting. Snyder's done with the hardest part. BvS. That movie was a transition. It wasn't the smoothest of transitions, but he's done with it.
  They literally made a plan for the DCEU midway shooting BvS. And it's understandable why some things were added that weren't in the original plan for the movie. Now Snyder can do his own thing with JL. The plan is laid out. Just film it already.

jesus fucking christ. these rumors are so demoralizing. i know they have to be taken with grain of salt but these rumors are way to persistent. anywho. I hope WB let Snyder attempt to right the ship. MoS was good, BvS was a bit better, not without its faults but good enough. Let the man deliver his Justice League movie that we were told would naturally be lighter toned because of everyone involved. If it doesn't work then so be it. Bring in someone else.

  They were the first website to report that there were BIG Suicide Squad reshoots taking place, they were just wrong about the reason.
  I report all news, good and bad. After Batman v Superman, it's not hard to believe that there's tension between WB and Snyder. It wasn't the reaction and box office that WB wanted, plain and simple.

        Yes Batman Begins is a classic, but that movie had to redeem the franchise from Batman & Robin. Also, Batman Begins had tremendous word of mouth that carried the movie with tremendous legs and phenomenal home video sales. That lead to TDK becoming one of the biggest movies of all time. Do you truly believe in your heart that BvS has the same word of mouth as Batman Begins.

        your acting like this is the first time they were ever introduced, Batman had 8 movies, multiple cartoon incarnations, a hugely TV popular show when TV was still relatively new, even two serials series. Superman had 6 movies. multiple cartoon incarnations, 3 serials and multiple tv shows. Wonder Woman had a tv show and all of them have been around far longer than just about every other hero and they have been infused into our pop culture for the past 70 decades and when they finally team up for the first time on the big screen in live action you don't think they could do as well as the avengers??? Heroes, who ten years ago, the average person probably couldn't even tell you the origins or the real names of, I mean hell the average person from 2006 probably couldn't even name more than 3 of the avengers.

        and that level of investment is what creates so much people having different opinions because they can't agree on what story/portrayal of the characters is best. the internet just makes it worst. Snyder is basically reimagining the Superman and Batman characters in his universe, and some really like it, but some don't. Some still want the boyscout Superman. They want him to be happy and very confident and basically perfect all the time. BvS tried to give more depth and humanity to the character by making him unsure of what to do in a real world setting that doesn't accept him right away with open arms like Donner's Superman. I think that was more interesting because it shows true character development and it's also very relevant to our times. His sacrifice ('this is my world') is then more meaningful. I also found this older, bitter and broken Batman so relatable than never before. Plus he is a real badass. Yes, I expect to see a more confident and joyful Superman in JL.. otherwise there is no growth.

        yeah I definitely see your point, but too me he should have stuck with the originals (like the animated series or the majority of modern era comics) for the first few movies and then later on he could have added upon the heroes in his own way. Cause these characters have been around for a long time and this is the first time they're meeting so it just seems like theres a clear idea of what people want and at a certain point you got to realize these characters are bigger than you and your re-imagining and they've been around longer than you have, and you got to get out of your own way. People wanted a smart, cold, calculating lex luthor who could put on a show for the public but deep down was dark, they wanted Bryan Cranston, or at least someone who could play the characters similarly. Instead Synder thought he would reimagine it to be his own thing, which at least to me is an example of how he gets in his own way. People have a clear idea of the heroes and villians they want and imagine, you can definitely add to that, but at least start out by giving us the version we want and then in future movies start to make it your own version

        You're not taking into consideration the amount of time the MCU has been around,which plays a big part into their box office success,or to put it in a different way,they have momentum in their favor.That's why films like Thor,Thor:The dark world and the latter two Iron Man movies made money while being considered fresh on RT,even though people didn't like them very much.
        Take Fury Road,for example.It was the most critically appraised film of 2015 and even though it had strong word of mouth by its side,it only managed to raise 378.4 million at the box office with a budget of 150 million.
        The same can be said for Edge of Tomorrow,which was praised by both critics and audiences,but failed to make big money.
        Some films are critical successes,but financial flops or critical flops,but financial successes.BvS falls in the middle,since it made its budget back+profit.
        It also should be noted that WB didn't pay for all of the movie,because there was some product placement in it,so along with merchandise and dvd/bluray sales coming in July,the movie will be pulling in more money.
        Having said that,BvS,while not making gangbusters type of profit,is far from a financial failure regardless of how you twist it to fit your biased point of view.

        Yeah,but that market didn't grow overnight.The fact that their way is considered the standard for serialized storytelling in terms of a shared cinematic universe is hurting DC as they take a different path,which is only natural.
        As for Marvel movies being remembered decades from now,I don't know what to say.See, Snyder wasn't completely wrong when he said Ant-man was another flavor of the month movie.
        While I really really liked Ant-man for being more self contained and telling a simpler story than Avengers or Winter soldier,others saw it as unnecessary and in the long run it might not stay in people's minds.
        I think the first Avengers doesn't hold up that well when you rewatch it and the same thing is available for the Iron Man or Thor series.
        The Cap series is the strongest from a quality point of view and it's the only one that is similar to something done by DC,which is somewhat ironic.
        The Marvel movies don't work as well as standalone films because they feel like middle men for the next movies from all those end-credits scenes,but they do work for the moment,which is enough to generate box office success.
        Fury Road might have been R-Rated and niche,but the critical acclaim and word of mouth from audiences wasn't enough to turn it into a really profitable film.It's also a part of a series of other 3 films that is quite known and if they make a sequel,it probably won't be a smash hit either,because it's still gonna be R-Rated and they don't push merchandise with Mad Max as they do with superhero films.

        The next mad max will be a wild card. oscars is a good publicity and hardy seems to be gaining more popularity. they also made a lot of money in dvds like edge of tommorow(due to good word of mouth), enough money for WB to consider sequel for both movies which is a suprise for EoT. so i assume its a lot of money and profitability isnt a problem. But if the critical reception will not be as good as fury road then i think the movie will suffer a brutal beating just like bvs had after Tdkt.

        BvS had three of the most iconic comic book heroes in the movie and it's not going to break 900 mill. In the hands of a real director, it would have made 1 billion. Avengers - 1.5 bill; Iron Man 3; 1.2 bill; Avengers Ultron 1.4 bill. and now Civil War.

        Of course it's gonna make more than 1.3 billion globally. It might break the Avengers' 1st opening weekend record for May. The film got Iron Man, Black Panther, and Spider-Man. People are more interested to see Spider-Man finally being part of the MCU, and wanted to see his performance in Civil War.

        Visually comic book accurate yes but in no way shape or form are these characters psychologically, mentally emotionally comic book accurate. FFS Snyder has Robin wielding a axe/spear hybrid!! One of the most tragic aspects to me at least of the Under the Red Hood movie is the flashbacks where we see hopeful/innocent/child like Robin and now what he is now because of the Joker. Snyder's version will probably have me cheering for the Joker to end the kids reign of terror on the streets of Gotham!

        Yes I am a Batman fanatic I know all of that, but in the recent 50 years how often has Batman killed with ruthless abandon. Yes he has killed in self defemse or in extreme situations. I was totally cool with him doing what he did to save Martha and that whole fight scene was amazing, but some of the batmobile stuff was just excessive. I personally loved the movie amd cant wait for the 3 hour cut, but my opinion aside, it got trashed by critics, slammed in the mainstream and dropped like a bomb at the box office. I know a lot of people that liked or even loved it, but it was not the well received success it could have or should have been. Snyders vision did not work for the masses. Nolan makes heavy and complicated themes accessible for general audiences. Snyder alienates most people. It is an honest problem and as fan I want to see these movies rival Marvel's and that is never going to happen with Snyder in charge. There are many great directors that can though.

        He killed a lot in that scene. He dragged a car with people in it for a while until it was smashed completely and he machine gunned everything and everyone in his path. This Batman did kill and he killed a lot. It didn't ruin the movie for me, but it was a strange and controversial creative choice that really wasn't necessary. The most popular versions of Batman at least try to avoid killing. I love Batman 89 and Returns, but I didnt like him killing then either. BTAS will always be my favorite adaptation of Batman.

        Snyder is a lazy director, plain and simple. Resorts to CGI and video montages to tell a story. Give me an Affleck type director. With Terrio, BvS execution would have been powerful. The script written for BvS actually works. It's the direction that was flawed. Inherent in the BvS script is a Lex Luthor who was victim of an abusive father and a Bruce Wayne who was hurt by the death of loved ones. Both characters had reason to distrust Superman. Snyder's poor execution to make the audience believe this important fact is what hurt the movie. Snyder has to go.

        The general audience's inability to connect basic dots is what hurt the movie. Many people, while not the majority, had no problem understanding Batman's motivation for any of his choices in the film. So if that fraction of the audience understood, then the material is there. A lot of things are implied and subtle, and they really don't need to waste our time over-explaining the obvious.
        Not being on the mainstream comprehension level does not inherently make a movie bad or a director flawed. It just means it's better suited to a different target audience than the one everyone assumes every superhero movie should be made for.

        I would call it a strong likelihood. They've had Batman/Superman projects and Justice League projects in various stages of development since at least the 90s. It's just a lot of the prototypes for the projects fell through for one reason or another.
        George Miller's Justice League got to the point where they had designed costumes and had taken early photos of them - some Wonder Woman ones were released just last year or so. I believe the targeted release for his JL film was 2009, so they were certainly working on it before the MCU had put out even Iron Man, which came out in 2008 (and rocked).
        DC has always wanted to do this. I think it's totally fair to say that Marvel's success helped it happen faster, but I don't think it's solely responsible for it happening -at all- as some are implying.

        I'd say there were definitely people associated with WB that wanted to get this done for a long time. But I don't know how committed WB really was to actually doing it, seeing as WB's last effort pre-Avengers was intended as a solo film series, per Snyder himself. My guess is that they felt pretty safe following the same strategy that got them critical acclaim making a realistic, but solo series of Batman with Nolan. They'd still be making Superman solo films at least until about 2019/20.

He miserably failed by not capitalizing on Nolan's perfection and crapped on Superman. Now my two favorite characters are less heroic than the Jungle Book boy Moguely. Snyder needs to go. Use JL to introduce Crisis/Flashpoint and reboot...

    There is definitely truth to it and I truly hate Faraci. How could there not be. Deadpool made more domestically and that is a travesty. I don't even think this news is all bad. The Affleck news is great and that guy on Flash was a weird choice anyway. I really like James Wan so I hope that works out, but Snyder had 2 chances and he screwed up. Its kind of weird for me to say since I loved the movie, but it was rejected by critics, the mainstream media and even many fans. This movie should have at least made a billion and had decent reviews. Snyder is not working for what this universe needs. He cant shepherd this whole universe. It just isnt working

    The reason I believe there isn't a major amount of conflict between Snyder and WB is because is extremely likely that Zack pitched his vision for JL along with BvS - the three movies work as a trilogy, starting with Man of Steel.
    I have faith in Zack, and WB should (and will, if they're smart - which they are) let him complete JL1 at least.
    BvS wasn't bad at all, it was just misunderstood for reasons most of which I think are irrational.

BvS took more than 3 years to produce, using DC's most valuable assets, and yet it was critically panned and suffered the biggest drop in interest for a comic book film in history, despite opening up with the biggest haul. This is followed up by Snyder pointing fingers at WB's editing interference to explain the seemingly incomplete plot of BvS.
    And now we find that the director for Aquaman has exited due to "creative differences"...still believe it's "exaggerated"?

      We all know how The Amazing Spider-Man turned out using a director who only had one good rom com under his belt. It may have been visually stunning and had some great Spider-Man moments, but the rest was in mess territory.
      As for BvS, I don't doubt that there are tensions between WB and Snyder right now. Whether they iron those out or something comes out of it, only the official press release or an announcement can confirm.

        Look, we can't know what would be, or what would happen. Deadpool is my favourite CBM of this year and it had a director on his debut.
        But many great movies have changed directors and continued on just fine. Animated films like The Good Dinosaur or Braid, then there's Ant-Man which turned out very enjoyable too.
        You can never know unless there is evidence of production problems and serious head clashing, which went on constantly throughout the filming of the Fantastic Four reboot. And the trailers spoke for themselves of what the movie was looking like.
        It's still 2+ years until The Flash movie, so it's okay for now.
        It's unfortunate that because of what's been happening with DC everything that would be considered normalish and not earth shattering (reshoots, director changes) in a movie production is sending alarm bells and getting overblown.
        We can only know once we get a press release, hear about genuine production problems or an official announcement.

        Well I'd look at 2 movies versus 13.
        Marvel has put out Thor 2, Iron Man 2, Iron Man 3, Age of Ultron..all terrible movies to me. But in the grand scheme of things...there are other great and decent movies from them to balance it out.
        I don't quite think either BvS or Man of Steel are as bad as the movies I listed above. Nowhere close in my books.
        So before I judge the entire DCEU I will at least see how Justice League is. That would be the 5th movie in the universe. We still have Suicide Squad this year and Wonder Woman next.
        Marvel only became a powerhouse once Avengers landed, which was their 6th movie using all their heroes, and was the first major team-up superhero movie in history. That's when they broke $1 billion.
        Before Avengers there was Iron Man 1, which is one of Marvel's best movies, Thor which was meh, Captain America which was pretty decent and the Incredible Hulk which was forgettable.
        While DC hasn't earned the trust Marvel has it's not hard to see why yet.

        Ironman 1 was the MCU's first and one of it's best, as you said yourself, so I think that's part of the reason people trust Marvel; they may not all be homeruns, but they DID deliver out of the gate. On the other hand, that's DC's problem: MoS had a lukewarm reception, and BvS was even worse. You may not personally think it's that bad, but a LOT of people do.
        The point is, DC has yet to deliver a crowd pleaser on 2 attempts, whether you liked the movie or not. So it wouldn't be a surprise to know the report about infighting at WB is all true.

        This is fair, and I've never doubted the potential for Snyder and WB to be butting heads. What I don't like or agree with is conspiracy-driven journalism where because DC is not in an ideal situation and because of BvS' reception, now everything is linked or overblown even if there is no correlation or if it's something plenty of movies go through in the past (i.e reshoots, change of directors, schedule changes).
        If news starts coming out about production problems, a press release comes out to indicate changes, Snyder is replaced or an announcement is made that WB is re-evaluating their approach to CBMs...
        Anything concrete, then I will react to that. But as I said before I wouldn't even mind if Snyder is replaced. I don't think he's deserved all of the hate, but it's an understandable decision. As long as DC don't try and copy Marvel and lose their voice, I'm good.
        I do agree that you need some crowd pleasers, and I have a feeling that Suicide Squad may be it. Otherwise there is always Wonder Woman and Justice League.
        I'm going to give the DCEU time to get in its stride, because as we know there also exist movies that people pan at their release and later realise weren't so bad. And vice versa.

        I disagree with you. I was actually an editor of a gaming news site for over 5 years so I have known a lot of reporters and seen how they work.
        Chris isn't like that. I know as I've been on this website since The Dark Knight Rises was just announced as a movie.
        Not all reporters are like this but at the end of the day they are motivated by hits - and they are people. There's a difference between merely reporting a rumour and giving it weight by advocating it as truth.
        When our site reported rumours we didn't do it with provocative headlines for example and frequently discussed ways it could be true or could be false. They were treated as unknowns and discussions points rather than would-be truths.
        The amount of times in the gaming world that rumours stirred up just at the right time and with just enough plausibility to cause a frenzy..
        Reporters do often have agendas or follow the bandwagon, or paint things controversially for hits.
        TL:DR I dont mind reporting rumours, but treat them as unknowns and discussions points rather than would-be truths.

        It took Marvel 6 films before they broke one billion and it was with their Avengers film containing all the heroes.
        BvS should have got that mark if it had better reception, but it is what it is. If it ends around 900 million it will be more or less at number 40 on the top 50 highest grossing movies of all time.
        WB would have wanted more of course, but it isn't the end of the DCEU by any means.
        We'll see when Justice League rolls out, which will be the 5th DC movie.

    The reason is a BIG thing to be wrong about.
    While I can certainly believe that there are tensions between Snyder and Warner Bros, media exists to stir controversy and make issues bigger than they are. It's about hits. That's not what you're about, as I've been a fan of your site since The Dark Knight Rises was only announced as a movie (In other words I've been here before it was cool).
    My first enormous joy here was when the first picture of Bane was released. That's when I knew I'd be on this site every day. To enjoy these unforgettable moments with DC and Batman fans.
    The bottom line is it doesn't matter how 'credible' the source of a rumour is. Report on it, but don't give it weight.
    The Suicide Squad reshoots were a classic example of this kind of idiocy. The mistake behind the reason caused ALL OF IT to become overblown in a stupid way.
    Why? Because controversy-driven media looked for a way to create a story out of BvS' reception (the fallacy of A happened before B so A must have caused B) and never cared about warping reality to do so.
    Readers look for headlines, tweets, short bandwagons. Not all of them think critically on something.
    We'll need to wait for an official announcement or a press release on this movie before we have any indication of something being up.
    While I won't mind seeing Snyder go, as much as I admire his bravado and visual skill, I certainly don't believe he's deserved the ire he's gotten, and neither does BvS.

    This is the problem, I think. It's not just that they were a wee bit mistaken about the reason for the reshoots, is it? Here are the two scenarios; first, what Birth.Movies.Death claimed- following the reaction to BVS, Warners demanded reshoots in order to change wholesale the tone of Suicide Squad, making it much lighter and fun, with much more humour. A massive alteration of tone. The reality, as told by Ayer himself? Warners told him they liked what he had accomplished and offered him the money and the time to beef up his product, if he wished. He took it, and used it to add action.
    The difference in those two scenarios is VAST. There's a chasm between reshoots mandated by the studio to tonally overhaul the movie and reshoots afforded as a reward to a director who felt he could add to and improve upon the action sequences of the movie.
    Remember also that this is the website who claimed to know that every joke in the movie was in the first trailer (Bohemian Rhapsody trailer). The second trailer, with Ballroom blitz, exposed this for the utter fallacy that it was.
    Given the monumental difference between what they reported and the reality of the Suicide Squad additional filming, it isn't at all the simple case of 'they were pretty much right'. Nor, I would argue, is it right to downplay just how staggeringly inaccurate they were about the reshoots.
    Given how wrong they were about the how and the why of it, it would be reasonable t think they could be just as off the mark about this. Perhaps they have gotten word of discussions between the studio and the director, but the reality is their track record with these films has been poor.
    You can't overlook just how wrong they were and pass it off as 'well they were right, there were reshoots'. They were so wrong about the most crucial factors revolving around that fact that their reading of any scenario can't really be trusted.

    I think box office isnt a problem since dark movies has a more niche market, 900 mil is a good number. Will it earn billion+ if they have a good word of mouth? Definitely.
    The problem is lot of fans are dissapointed in this film. For me im a huge DC fan but i have to admit the editing in this movie jesse's luthor is spawn from hell. I love the last quarter of movie though, but I want great character moments too and zack snyder, even tho i love MoS, stinks in that department

    Newsflash: Even with over $850 MILLION at the box office, BvS was a failure in WB's eyes. It made way less than the $1 billion they were projecting, and it made them less of a profit than Man of Steel. No one who wears a suit at WB is happy with Zack Snyder taking another $250 million for another big movie. This rumor is not hard to believe, which is why I reported it here. There's very likely truth to it.

        Yes u are right but you also need to considered the nature of the movie itself/ BvS is really not that mainstream friendly even more so than even christopher nolan dark knight trilogy. Noticed that unlike Dark knight trilogy, BvS is not a very heavy exposition dialogue that explains everything to you. Zack prefer to use a visual to show it to you and let the viewers and audiences connect the dot by themselves. BvS movie is way too subtle and I think Zack overestimate critics and audience ability or interest to willingly look deeper into the movie by themselves beyond than just watching the movie at the surface level. Christophr nolan styles work for most people because he explain it everything in his movie so that even the casual audience can even understand the complex themes presented in his movie.
        Zack is definitely very ambitious in making BvS. BvS is heavily inspired by classic Shakespeare tragic drama and BvS is being edited and told in the style of opera/theatre. This is definitely went over everyone head since this is not following the current structure of formula storytelling by most of today blockbuster movie.
        I appreciate zack for what he did for BvS. But i understand that zack also need to dumb down a bit on JL movie so that it will be more appealing to mainstream audiences than BvS does.

        You're 100% correct on all of that, and it makes me sad for this world that we'll have to settle for a dumbed down JL in order to appease the masses. We deserve a better society, and we deserve classier treatments of these characters. But now we see why we can't have nice things.
        To me, the one thing that held back Nolan's movies the most was the need to over-explain things that would have been much more poetic and beautiful left silent.
        Begins had the most balls as far as subtlety goes. BvS took those balls and ran with them, and I love it for that. It was exactly the kind of movie I wanted in that regard; thought-provoking, emotional, symbolic... and of course everyone flipped out when it all went over their heads (to the point that they don't even realize it or are in denial of it).

        In the case of BvS (and WB/DC Entertainment in general), they earn money from other sources such as merchandise, product placement…etc.
        you need to take into consideration that 1) it made so much money on the first week-end that it could only drop on the 2nd (it could have made more money had it not been for the critics, but word of mouth is doing a good job here :D) and 2) it’s totally usual from a blockbuster (look at some charts at boxofficemojo.com :D). Also, it’s just the second film of the DCEU, and both films earned way more at the BO than the first MCU films (which are Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk).
        And they also managed to achieve something I think some fans haven’t really considered : getting attention. Because, although I’m absolutely not trained in business, I think WB executives are thinking about the long run. Despite what critics/biased haters say, most reactions were positive/neutral, we’re still talking about the films (even to this day, we’re still debating the end of Man Of Steel) and there is interest in the following films (see here). THAT will keep the $$$ rolling for them. And also having a filmmaker-driven approach will allow them to diversify their films and manage not to make viewers bored.

        The budget for the movie was $250m and the advertisements/promotion stuff was at least $100m. Everyone is saying WB expected at least 1b because the movie features the 3 most iconic super heroes and costs $350+m. If they didn't expect a billion, they wouldn't have spent that much money.

That would be amazing. I think Zack has good ideas, he just needs some guidance when it comes to the story flowing smoothly and all that. But George Miller is a whole other level. Nothing against Zack, but if we could get Miller to replace him I'm all for it.

  Snyder focused more on visual effects and actions, but lacked the storytelling. He needs a better screenwriter. WB should've never hired David Goyer to be in DC film projects in the 1st place. He had a bad reputations for writing screenplays for sequels, remakes/reboots, and other adaptation. I don't trust Chris Terrino, since he too fucked up the story for BvS. I'm not sure he knows much about comic book superheroes. And he alone is writing the screenplay for Justice League Part One.

    Well i think Man of Steel is good but had some of its problems to explain things like why did his clarks father adopted one said about saving those ppls lives in bus and he said maybe, and in the middle of the wreck kissing lois it has plot holes and all and also to explain normal movie goers about some of the supes motives and all.
    But I can't blame Zack Snyder for Man of Steel because I completely blame David S. Goyer's script. It was extremely weak and had some pretty terrible dialogue scenes and poorly written scenarios. It didn't come as a surprise to me when they added Chris Terrio to the screenplay. It seems he took control over all of the screen writing because this movie is written very well. Sadly it seems Goyer did get a crack at how this film should be structured because that's something that fell flat in this film. The story structures its events in a Goyer way where they'll constantly keep moving back and forth, back and forth, back and forth and made the film stagger at points. But it didn't stop from some great scenes in the movie and some awesome dialogue from Affleck and Cavill. Honestly Snyder isn't the problem with the DCCU. The problem is Goyer. If anyone needs to be taken out of this franchise it's Goyer who needs the boot. And I'm glad he's out.

      You are spot on with Goyer as the weak link. Geoff johns although I hate his reworkings of the DC comic origins and the multiverse New 52 universe, I believe he is fresh for the movie versions of the DC heroes. Goyer is just a guy who got too much credit for putting a puzzle together for chris nolan. His work on Blade 3 shows how terrible he is. In batman begins he layed so many possible avenues for dc and nolan to take for their sequels. There was no master story arch but the trilogy came together nicely before it could fall apart.

      Actually Snyder is the biggest problem. His films lack the nuanced storytelling that DC films needs. Snyder is more interested in things looking cool than things making sense. He all but admitted in an interview some years ago that he dislikes the whole concept of mainstream comics that don't have those heroes having sex or killing each other. He is not the man to be the 'Kevin Feige' of the DCU.

    I love the story of MoS so i dont think changing screenwriter will fix things if zack would still be directing the film. I swear, he is the worst person to bring great character moments. He has a great lineup of actors in that movie, but everybody is so dead beat and his fetish for dramatic poses ruined a lot of scene.

    See I don't think we should entirely replace Zack I just think he needs a co-Captain more so than anything. His visuals were great and the storytelling flowed very well but I think he just needs another pair of eyes so that way when the cuts have to come in it doesn't feel like something is missing. Which is what I am understanding from some fans who think the film was somewhat choppy. Get Zack a co-Captain and watch JL be amazing and I think a co director who is not afraid to take risks would be good for Zack because someone who is timid and not all for being a risk taker (Nolan) won't work well with someone who is all about giving the fans some twists and bringing in new possibilities. (Nothing against Nolan he just seems so timid)

That says nothing for his ability to receive criticism from an equal, or share custody over his work with another person's input being weighed with equal or more weight. I.e. Snyder's tone-deaf responses thus far to fan opinions, other filmmaker's visions (saying he would have had Bruce Raped in prison, had he been able to direct Batman Begins.       The DC heroes are here to stay. Their mythologies are solidified which is how snyder and nolan can reinterpret batman. Zach showed me that he loved the characters and the movie by the way he meticulously framed each scene. There were some audacious fight scenes and delicate kevin costner scenes throughout. He made a visceral world for the characters to battle in. The problem with the movie is henry Cavil. Dont get me wrong i think he is ok as clark/superman, but he is not christopher reeves. We the audience is searching for a charismatic tongue in cheek boyscout of an actor to play the man of tomorrow. Its too hard to find an actor that can do this without being someone you would recognize as a star. Ben Affleck is the star of this movie and was paid like he was therefore was written and directed like one. I think Cavil will get his chance to grow into the character as he makes the journey to come back from the dead. I love the direction this went. Yeah give the fans all the batman they want and then suddenly kill supes. Now comes the better superman stories. Doomsday was created as a gimmick in the comics and the movies got that out of the way. Good. Lets do kingdomecome, or all star superman, or even injustice. Marvel is akin to the days of batman and robin with George clooney. Fun movies that you can turn your brain off for.

        I agree with you on everything except the little Henry Cavill bit. I think we all can agree Christopher Reeves is a legend and it's okay to respect the past, but we must also embrace the future. Henry Cavill is playing Clark/Supes the way Zack sees him. Not as a boyscout who is awkward or charismatic but as a confident superhuman, reckless, problematic and flawed in every way possible (Lol I think that's probably why I have become such a huge Superman fan in recent years since MoS). I feel like that boyscout, charismatic hero many of you saw in Christopher playing Supes you will eventually see in Henry's version of Supes but everyone has to have a dark beginning before they can see the light. I think with this "death" of Superman storyline it can help create new possibilities for the characters and allows Supes to finally establish his code. Zack is doing an amazing job and I can not wait for the Director's cut of this film! Like I always said when someone shows a true interest in their project and advocates for it strongly and stands by it 100% of the time then you know they are putting their heart and soul into it, the fact that the film hit the four hour mark and they had to cut it to fit 2 and a half hours shows me that Zack really wants to further the DCEU and make the fans proud.

    Goyer wrote the original script then when WB brought in Affleck, rumor has it, Affleck didn't like the script, so he brought in Terrio to rewrite it... and then Affleck was rewriting the script during filming... So a lot of folks had their hands over this script and I believe Snyder just went along with what he had cause he doesn't know how to tell a coherent story... Remember that Nolan removed goyer from screenwriting duties for the dark knight and dark knight rises.. Goyer only wrote Batman Begins.. So it looks like Nolan didn't trust goyer either... Then goyer gets removed from BvS.. BvS simply had a lot of bad writing... Almost amateuristic and lazy writing.... To me it was like a throwaway film, just to introduce the Justice League and the new Batman. Although, I'm sure WB doesn't see it like that considering all the money they spent on it.. They'll still make a profit over time with the merchandise sells and DVD's and Streaming, etc..

        Affleck said it himself. When asked if he brought in Terrio as a two for one deal he said no. That it just so happened that WB had hired Terrio to rewrite goyers script and it made the whole project that much more attractive to him, so he joined
        The only justice League cameo I liked was wonder woman( who should've been given a lot more to do and her own solo action scene) and the flash (that was fucking awesome) they should've found a better way to integrate Cyborg and Aquaman. I could think of many logical ways. Oh well

    Another thing is that when Goyer and Nolan approached WB about this making this new Superman, Nolan simply wanted a Superman Trilogy... He never intended it to lead to Justice League... He felt they were better off doing what he did with Batman...Make it a Superman story... And goyer even regretted ever started this process in the first place because of the pressure it had to make it work... At first, that was Snyder's idea too.. A superman trilogy.. In the beginning, WB was going to create a separate universe for the Justice League with no relation to Snyder's Superman stories... But WB eventually pushed snyder to make his Superman lead to a Justice league because that's what they always wanted and they also didn't like the fact that Nolan wanted to keep his Batman in a single universe where there is no Superman...

He wanted to bring to life some aspects of the art design and combat choreography to pay respects to the comics. Sort of like an Easter egg. The story and overall universe is brand new with story lines that go different directions but seem familiar. people who didn't understand that going in are foolish and shouldn't criticize because they didn't understand it entering or leaving the movie. I have never seen a movie nitpicked this harshly. Especially by people that don't have enough common sense to know this an entirely re-imagined universe.

        Are you for real? He used Returns verbatim in areas. One small thing is an easter egg dude. Using the same bat suit, portions of story, dialog, characterizations isn't an easter egg.. He even used panels like the parents death straight from Miller. Know how COOL it looked in slow mo when the gun was under Martha's necklace, then the slide shifts back as he fires breaking the pearls? Thank Miller.

Second, that is why this movie is an original adaptation with nods to the entire justice league universe. they could have made a movie that completely ripped off the already animated dark knight returns movie that was a taken from the novel, but that would have been an already done/one shot knock off. They set up for an entire new expanded universe. If you really think that snyder was trying to make the dark knight returns movie into a live action film then show me proof, because that was never EVER on the table. just because the batman suit looked like the one on dark knight returns does not mean jack shit man.         OK. First off. The movie has made 863 million worldwide. It hasn't finished it's theater run yet. Second, Dawn of Justice is going to make over 100 million dollars in blu-ray/DVD sales. Man of Steel made 107 million dollars in DVD sales. Lastly, They are filming Justice League right now. It opens in November of next year.

        Yes but look at the bigger picture. Hollywood is being overrun with superhero movies following the continuity and shared universe trend. Back in 2000's movies were extremely diverse and Oscars/ academy award actors went into new projects. Now superheros movies are the dominant movies in theaters. Money for them is high but icons and structure are few and far between with Marvel at the top. And time has proven that no matter how high a trend fly's it inevitably brings you back to earth so that other trends can rule the sky. It is human nature and people get bored. i think in 10 more years a new trend will begin and superhero movies will drop in value through over abundance. Hollywood execs fore see this and think that those who are fore-running the trend (marvel) are already set and others with enough influence (DC/WB) can jump on that wagon or hell maybe even beat other competitors to the finish line. Either way, they know their Leonardo DiCaprio movie about oppression in a court room during an end of the world earthquake is quickly put on the back burner in most movie goers minds. The ticket sales may be good but nowhere near as good as they used to be especially if they go up against starwars, marvel or DC movies. So the money is there for WB and they are wise to invest in it now. The pay off ill be better than anything they had before in the last decade. Batman v Superman (even though i love the movie to death) is a hiccup on the excel money spreadsheet. It is like farting when you walk inside a building full of people. As soon as you get through the door and that fart squeaks out... everyone will be looking at you. some in laughter some in disgust and others will just think you're awesome for doing it, but regardless of how they feel you are still exactly where you are supposed to be. Picking up your check. So anyone worrying about the DCEU, chill the fuck out. And anyone instigating, stop embarrassing yourself and all us nerds. we embarrass ourselves just fine without your coincided bitching. (looking at you christian) So in closing, Hollywood executives who own super hero rights will invest in their movies good or bad. so if there is going to be any friction in the industry is gonna be the execs in the indi movie departments who cant stay afloat against all superhero movies.   I think it was more of the entirety of the moving being cut short for a shorter run time. I still loved BvS and think people are harshing on it rather hard -- not that the critiques aren't warranted - but if you look some critics response to BvS and then go read their thoughts on Ironman 2, 3, and AoU -- fells a bit biased.
  That being said, these are movies - these things happen, and people often butt heads. Look at Kevin and Marvel: there was a lot behind the scenes that didn't get aired out until Weadon finished up with AoU.
  BvS suffered mainly from shortening the time -- but for those who paid attention from start to finish, there's a lot of things that makes sense, clicks well, and paints a clear picture. After watching Angry Joe and The Critic, I even noticed they missed glaring connections as to character motivation.
  Hopefully we'll get to see the true project once the director's cut releases.

    It is literally a bias. The evidence is so widely apparent that I just laugh at this point. There's little else to do but point it out for how absurd it is.
    I did a little test. Age of Ultron has around 45 minutes of action (which amounts to over 30% of its runtime) and of that about 30 minutes would classify as mindless action (basically just spectacle with no substance - the Hulkbuster fight, the finale against an army of brainless robots etc).
    Yet Man of Steel and BvS are totally mindless action movies and Age of Ultron isn't right?
    Even Rotten Tomatoes' conclusion says that BvS squanders a powerful plot with effects driven action. Yet how can you praise the mindless action in one and condemn the other - even when BvS arguably has a legitimately great spectacle?
    BvS hurt its plot because of narrative and pacing shortcomings. Not the action. But apparently only a Marvel film can offer a spectacle I guess.
    I love both, but I seriously hate this cynicism that the audience and critics are giving me towards Marvel because of how unashamedly biased and inconsistent they are. There is no consistency. No fairness. It's "Marvel's way or the high way" when it comes to what critics expect of a comic book movie.
    Years from now they'll be the first ones to talk about 'stagnation' in the genre, yet all they seem to want is more of the time and homogenisation of the genre.
    Many crazes die because of homogenisation (gritty shooters in video games, vampire, zombie, YA).
    Marvel's direction is absolutely fine, but if you:
    1) Make it the standard of what a CBM *should be* when there should be no standard and encouragement of diversity
    2) Don't expect any risks whatsoever out of them
    You will detract from this genre somewhere down the line.

    the fault on BvS wasnt on Snyder's hands, it was with the script, which he didnt wrote. (AND, lets face it, this is being exagerated, the movie was good, it wasnt great, it wasnt terrible, it was good, a solid 7.6)
    However, he did an amazing job directing the movie.
    This may be unpopular, but he is one of the bests directors working today, his visual style its almost UNMATCHED, with few exceptions like Iñarritu, Miller, Winding Refn or Cuaron. Hell, he is even a better director than Nolan. (NOTE I SAID DIRECTOR)
    The problem? he is a shit writter, thats why Nolan has more succes. Lets face it, a lot of TDK scenes were poorly shot, but the amazing script made up for it. So, its pretty fucking simple.
    USE Geoff Johns, hire him to run the DCU, the BvS script had a lot of great scenes, but Lex was poorly written, which at the end hurted the movie a lot (BvS couldve reached TDK level of quality).
    So, its simple:
    Fire whoever its responsible for the character rape that Lex suffered, STOP HYPING FUTURE MOVIES, and just move on.
    MoS and BvS already did what it needed to be done:
    Stablish Superman perfectly: DONE
    Stablish the ultimate Batman: DONE
    Introduce WW: DONE
    You have the trinity, now just build JL around them, this 3 characters have the mythos to build a great universe....
    That and: DONT GIVE IN TO THE WHINING
    The poor writting on Lex was the problem, the tone ITS NOT.

      And you've to understand that the choices on Luthor and the decisions of characters were all result of Snyder. Directors, especially Snyder at BvS have the control over the basic story, casting and character arcs. The script actually did a good job. I have to applaud Terrio. Despite not having much knowledge in comics, he managed to jam five movie worth of scripts into 2 and a half hour movie which was still watchable.
      WB should've never approved of having so much plot in one movie. It should've been two part movie.

        The script was poorly written, this couldve have been a TDK lvl of quality movie, their only fault was the injustice scene... it didnt fit, you couldve had the same scene without the parademons and the flash cameo, and with different dialogue from Superman, something to add to bruce paranoia.
        I would say, it was poorly edited, they shouldve had Bruce falling sleep before that scene insted of just cutting to it to abruptly, and at the end, he wakes up, and Alfred says some sarcastic and funny remark about his heavy drinking, and how is starting to fuck with his mind (his nightmares).
        You remove the martha scene, even if i loved that scene, because i was able to understand the damn scene, unlike a lot of people, and instead:
        You modify the Wayne's murder scene slightly, you have the exact same scene, BUT, Martha is injured, not dead after she falls off and her necklace is broken, you have her lying above thomas and trying to shelter Bruce, and you have her beg the killer with these exact same words: "please, stop, please i beg you, stop" or something like that, and he just kills her anyways, (then this is could be left out, but i like it :D : the killer points at Bruce's head, shots.... but hes out of bullets, so he runs), then, when you have batman about to kill Superman, batman has a flashback about that day because lois says thos exact words and is trying to protect Supeman the same way martha was protecting both Thomas and bruce... he sees himself as the killer... there....
        you also: change the warehouse scene, to the scene in which Bruce infiltrates to lexcorp, he just goes in to steal the kryptonite, but he discovers the info about WW, Flash and Aquaman, AND YOU REMOVE THE CYBORG SCENE, this is very important, no one knows who the fuck he is, instead you make a 2 min scene intro in JL for Cyborg like the batman one...
        Then OFC, you fix Lex, and make him a hybrid of Ozymandias/littlefinger/Obama, make him use the media to destroy Superman's image, remove the african subplot, add a scene with cuts of the inmediat aftermath of the battle of metropolis, in which they show the tension everyone has regarding Superman, you cut to the news, reporting "the military says this alien helped them", to try to calm people, you cut to people in fear of him, then you show how he slowly earned their trust by helping and shit on those 2 years, but still, a lot of people dont trust him...then you show the (2 years later)...
        and, i dont know, after the 2 years later, show a scene in which there is a bank robbery in Metropolis, and there is no way police can stop it without casualties, but supes shows up, and stops them, WITHOUT FIGTHING, he talks to them and make them surrender AND, VERY IMPORTANT, they show half the people terrified of this alien, and half of the people embracing him as their hero...so he stops them, but one of the robbers its not having it (shouts racist remark about supes being an alien and being responsible of the deaths of thousands of people), he shots at supes, he doesnt do nothing to him, but... o fuck a bullet bounces off of him and hits a women on the leg, he realizes his mistake and catches all the bullets instead (goku style), he stops that dude WITH THE LEAST AMOUNT OF VOILENCE AS POSIBLE, and he tries to take the women to the hospital but she is very afraid of him, she believes hes going to kill here, but he flies her to the hospital... and before he leaves, she takes his hand, and thanks him... then OFC, you make the Batman and supes conflict about their ideologies, you make 2 fights, the first one Supes totally owns batman, but, THEY FUCKING TALK, Supes tells batman (THIS IS JUST THE GENERAL IDEA OF THEIR TALK) that he has become nothing more than a criminal, batman tells him, you are naive, this city teached me that they are not woth it, they need to be stop at any cost, they have no hope, Supes discovers that bruce is batman, and tells him: the only reason i dont take you to prison, is because i know you wouldnt surVive more than an hour, so, the next time you see your light in the SKY.....you know the rest.... and at the end Supes restores bruce's humanity, gives him hope...
        and there, you raise BvS from a 7.6, to a fucking 10, or a 9 atleast....
        OFC this is a simplistic way of putting it, BUT IF I CAN WRITE A BETTER FUCKING SCRIPT, then Chris, or David, or whoever fucked up on the writting department needs to be fired.
        And, yes, i give you that, casting jesse was a big fucking mistake, they wrotte the character to fit jesse, they didnt choose an actor to fit lex...

The difference between their assertion and the reality was so incredibly huge that it was wrong to intimate that they were more or less right, as I feel this article does.
  They were so massively wrong about it that it throws tremendous doubt on this. It could, like the Suicide Squad additional filming, be based on a fact, but given how wrong they were about the reasoning and cause of that previous fact, they could just as easily be as wrong about the crucial reasons of this fact.

Even if BvS were as bad as everybody claimed it is, Zack Snyder would still be a success in my eyes for the masterpiece that is Man of Steel.
Only Batman v Superman wasn't a bad movie. Personally I thought it was pretty great, and I'm sure the director's cut will be even better.

        but my point is that they needed those movies, 15 years ago the general public had no idea who Iron Man was or hawkeye or black widow. They also wouldn't know much about Thor, Captain America, Loki, or Nick furry. But people have known about Batman, Superman, since the 60s and 50s, and wonder woman since the 70s. What I'm saying is before the shared movie universe for both companies came out there was absolutely no comparison between the popularity of DC heroes to Marvel heroes and just a couple of movies should have made that big of a difference (a +400 million dollar difference)

        Nope, they're testing new waters with Black Panther, Ant-man and guardians of galaxy. They might be formulaic, but outside Avengers and Iron Man, they all feel different. They still have Spider-man and Daredevil in case all fails.

        They want to create the same thing - an interconnected universe of films tied together with overarching themes. They are going about it differently, yes. They're starting with the big films and having the solo films follow. Tbh, that's a flawed strategy. MCU got audience invested in the characters before putting them together in Avengers and Civil War. BvS relied on its brand, and it had very mixed results.

    They needed a more accessible film. They used esoteric source material when they had so many other choices. BvS did have to be Marvel, but it could have been user friendly to moviegoers who aren't fans of the comics.

  I believe WB will want some tonal changes to make the DCfilms more GA friendly, that doesn't mean MCU tone but I do think they are concerned about the GA finding BvS not easy to follow. Hey I loved it but I am a long term comic book reader but the GA is not.

    Pretty much, I had a friend who recently saw it and he did not get much of it...especially the Flash scene....he was shocked when I told him about alternate universe and stuff....they have to do a better job at explaining things to the GA, only true comicbook fans understood that part.

    Finally someone speaking some sense here. WB's biggest fear is that Zack Snyder makes the JL into BvS parts 2 and 3. If Snyder is going to make Superman the crazed psycho villain in JL, the DCEU is doomed.

  Off course they are not happy, because it was a subject of bias criticism. WB was happy with the movie all along, they were proud of it (remember standing ovation from WB execs?). So they can't suddenly hate Snyder's vision, because they saw everything. If anything, there might be brainstorming going on at WB, not necessarily against execs and Snyder.

    In the end, it's the bottom line that matters. Whether the "standing ovation" happened or not, the fact is the movie underperformed. And it's Snyder's job to make a successful movie. I bet you no one would be clapping at WB had they known what the audience reaction would be.

  Watchmen flopped, so did Sucker Punch. Man of Steel and Batman v Superman both received mixed responses which also affected the Box Office.
  If WB wanted Zack gone or were worried about what he's doing, it would have happened LONG ago.

      So? Both of them cost hundreds of millions of dollars but flopped. That's a big deal.
      Justice League comes out on November 17th, 2017 only because Warner Bros. decided that in 2014. If they wanted Snyder gone they would have played it safe and scheduled JL in 2018 so they'd have enough time replace him as director. They could have asked to him work as a producer on all DC films with someone else directing JL. Except that never happened.

        DC is under pressure to get the DCCU going. They literally can't afford to postpone it, or throw it in limbo by ejecting it's main director, even if they want to. So the best they can hope for is that Snyder can right the ship, because they're already behind.

i think there's a pattern here, so far the only DCEU projects free from trouble are affleck's "the batman", jenkins' WW and Ayer's SS, those are WBs strongest cards, so they're good. now, it's kinda obvious that the flash and aquaman are not secure because its less experienced directors and mainly because both characters are new to the big screen; i know, also WW is new but GAs response the gadot as WW is astounding. that being said, it's expected from WB to be rattled, so expect these kind of news to have a constant flow. let's expect for the best anyways.

  I don't think Nolan would be good for this, I don't think his take on Batman wouldn't really work for like Flash, Aquaman, ect. If they want slightly more adult oriented yet fun and cool comic book shared universe, I think they should get Matthew Vaughn, although he might be exclusively fox.

    His take on a realistic Batman was a one shot, it's over. I don't think he makes movies with realism everytime. Inception and Interstellar aren't realistic.
    And Nolan can do fun and humor, proof TDK trilogy.
