Holly Hunter talks 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice', confirms scenes with Superman

Holly Hunter's role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice still hasn't been officially announced, but sources told Batman News last summer that she'll be playing a U.S. Senator. That makes sense, especially with a major action scene taking place in Washington D.C. in the movie.

The Wall Street Journal interviewed Hunter recently, and she talked a little bit about her role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Here's what she had to say:

[You went from a small movie] to “Batman v Superman,” which probably felt a bit like whiplash.
It was really fun to be part of a giant, massive piece of machinery, headed up by Zack Snyder, who is thoroughly at home in that uber mega environment. Most people would have a nervous breakdown with that kind of pressure, and he’s enthralled.
You’ve never been in this kind of blockbuster movie before. Why did you want to do it now?
Zack asked me. He came to me with an offer, and I was like, “Yeah, that would be fun.” It’s fun to mix it up.
Can you tell us anything about Superman? Or Batman?
I have scenes with Superman. He looks phenomenal. And to see Ben [Affleck, who plays Batman] and Henry [Cavill, who plays Superman] together is quite formidable. They are massive hunks of masculinity.
Can you tell me anything more?
No, of course not. I don’t want anything to happen to my kids.

  I think that's slightly inaccurate. This movie probably net $1 billion on Batman and Affleck. That's getting more general hype & press inmost media outlets. Adding Kent & Diana (though she's the less media coverage of the 3 for the movie) and its a bonus. I don't think adding Cyborg to the cast will get any more butts in the seats that weren't already going.

    in a realistic way all i can say is this movie will equal Avengers 1 record (1.2 Billion) but achieving more than that will be difficult for this movie, but who knows the anticipation and hype is already over the top and when trailers and tv spots starts hitting the internet by the end of 2015 and 2016 it gets even more, so in a practical way this movie can make something between 1.1 - 1.5 billion in box office not more than that.

      I agree. It's not a dig into the movie, but besides Batman, Affleck, & Kent, I just don't believe people who weren't going to see the movie now will because Cyborg & Flash might have cameos.

        I think there's a good chance for a non-core market to turn out for this film, at least initially: Second Wave feminists from the 60's-70's (to be blunt and rude, grannies) who will want to support a Wonder Woman film. Diana was adopted as a symbol by many from that era; she was on the cover of the second issue of Ms. Magazine, and they, and their daughters and granddaughters at e.g. Jezebel and Feministing. will be highly vocal if the depiction of her doesn't meet their expectations.

        A solo film, yes. A small role in this movie? I'm not convinced. I can't imagine a little old lady uncertain about seeing BvS:DoJ will be swayed by a few scenes with Diana.

      the thing is Cyborg is relatively unknown character, to comic book people yeah they know him, but the thing is only Victor Stone is gonna appear in this movie (an insider from WB leaked it to a website) so i don't think enough people will be pulled towards this movie because of a random non super hero supporting character. because even MoS had 2 high profile black actors in supporting roles with massive screen time, yet we know what happened right.

        The younger generation may be more familiar with Cyborg than with MM because of the Teen Titans tv show on CN. By the time 2020 rolls around, idk how old those kids would be but i do know the TT have been on for years now, I can only assume they would be in the target age group by the time the film drops

        if by MM you mean Martian Manhunter then let me say this MM is more famous than Cyborg, but obviously MM is not in Justice League movie, and Cyborg is, and as i mentioned the leakster informed, that Victor Stone will transform into Cyborg in Justice League movie, so WB will be marketing Cyborg also along with the other six, so it's like Black guy as a badass super hero along with gods, that's a benefit WB has, which Avengers 1 didn't have, any how Cyborg will become pretty popular, because WB is planning a solo movie for him, and that's huge.

        I agree with you, WB is gonna market for him. Why wouldn't they with a film dedicated to him in the near future? He is not a very well-known character, when compared to the rest of the roster, but I would argue, that to the general movie going audience, he may be just as recognizable... if not more so, than the Martian Manhunter. You have to keep in mind, many children have grown up watching the Teen Titans at one point or another. The essence of that cartoon show is geared towards a much broader audience than the Justice League, the animated series was. Thus, exposing it to a larger audience.
        So, although it's still an uphill battle to get exposure for the character and introduce him to newer audiences, I don't think it'll be a difficult as you make it out to seem. Especially, since he is essentially a suped up cooler version of Ironman, lol

        Iron Man was a self important jerk, irresponsible alcoholic who turned into a bit of helper but on the other hand Victor Stone was dreaming to get into professional football world and then he was stripped from humanity, got his dreams crushed right in front of his eyes and became something which he calls a "Monster" and now trys to deal with his life, so he isn't related or compared with Iron Man at all, buddy :)

        I was referring to their general design and abilities, not their character(is tics). So two armored characters with the ability to fly and shoot canons and use weaponry makes them similar. How is that hard to understand, buddy?

        i didn't tell it was hard to understand, but comic book movies have this approach of making characters more relatable which leans heavily on their character( is tics) and thus it would be easy to differentiate them.

        Yes, you are absolutely right... but that is only after people have paid for their movie ticket and saw the movie. Before that, you have to get people interested in your film. In order to do so, you have to draw on something that you know will get butts in the seat. I can assure you that when the Cyborg trailer drops... there will be very little insight in to the character and more to do with how "awesome" this character is by how much "cool shit" he does. Which will be based on his "Ironman-like" abilities.
        Very similar to the original Ironman trailer that showed little to no character traits and a whole lot of explosions

      Into BvS:DoJ? I'm not sure. Unless the trailers are very deceiving, how much will really get spotlighted beyond the 2 lead characters?
      Plus, Cyborg...isn't not really a household name to the general public. Arguably, neither were Iron Man or Thor, but I think using John Stewart would've been a better route (actually, I'd prefer Mr. Terrific, but I see the same issues I do with Cyborg).

        Obviously they are going to follow the New 52 JL line-up. They have to have Hal Hordan as GL, as he's the "original", and maybe later introduce Stewart in a GL Corps film. Unless they have other plans as has been "rumored".

        Eh, I don't think so. While I like Martian Manhunter, he is very forgettable (to the general public) and easily replaceable. Cyborg also has the whole "outcast" -thing going on, so he fits I think. Plus it's good to have diversity.

        Maybe... just speculation... they introduce Hal very early on, let's say the flash movie, but by the time 2020 rolls around, the Green Lantern movie is designed to introduce John Stewart. No one says this DCCU needs only one GL

  Every one is eager to see how Ben will do as Batman. Even those with doubts are going to go in out of curiosity. After the TDK Trilogy, people must be pretty anxious to see how a new Batman can do.

    You mean TDKR? I don't believe general audiences wanting to see Batman, a big chunk of which are kids and teens, care that much about who's behind the wheel. They care about what's on screen, and that is a kick ass Batman. Plus, they have to see BvS first before judging if it's better or worse than Nolan's Batman.

yeah it's clear with the market analysis that this movie will make 1.2 billion at the very least and equal Avengers 1 in sales, but getting past that would be difficult but not that much as the anticipation and hype for this movie is already over flowing and when the trailers and TV spots starts hitting the internet by the end 2015 and start of 2016, it's pretty easy for this movie to make 1.2 billion and even go over that, but i 100% that this movie will not touch 2 Billion, just being realistic.
but i don't think Even A2 will hit 2 Billion, maybe 1.5 billion at max.

  Agreed. I will go even further to say that if BvS doesn't make AT LEAST $1.2 Billion, then it will be considered a failure. $1 Billion is the new floor for mega blockbusters. That is the reason TASM2, although it made money, is considered to be a failure.
  A:AOU will definitely make a good run at $2 Billion. If it doesn't finish over $2 Billion, it will come close. The Marvel fans are rabid about that one and many of them will go see it 6-7 times each. I even expect Cap3 to make a run at $1 billion.

    Some minor corrections
    1) Avengers 2 will not touch 2 billion if u ask me, that's really huge, but it can touch 1.5 billion.
    2) TASM 2 was considered a failure because of the bad critical reception and reviews.
    3) cap 3 can easily touch a billion can also reap more, as it is a Avengers 2.5 in disguise
    4) well no one will consider BvS a failure if it makes 1 billion. But some Marvel trolls will be there who might say even iron man 3,made more money than BvS

      re: 1) The floor for Avengers 2 is $1.5 Billion. I would personally be surprised at anything less. It will do $1 Billion in its sleep.
      re: 2) The suits at Sony were fully expecting to make $1 Billion on that pile of crap. It is a miracle it did $700 million. But then again Transformers 4 went over $1 Billion. At the end of the day it is about bank. The critical reception made the outlook on the take on future movies more bleak.

      If BvS sucks or gets mixed reviews then BvS will do ~$600 million and the DCCU will die before it begins.
      If it is good (ala Batman Begins) it will do $1.2 Billion
      If it is freaking awesome (like TDK) it will do >$1.5 Billion
      Every true fan is AT LEAST hoping for "good" (but we really want an awesome movie) so that we can continue to get all the movies on the list.
      This film absolutely MUST BE GOOD. There is too much on the line.
      - Time Warner/WB will take a dive
      - The DCCU will be done for perhaps our generation
      - Ben Affleck's career will take a massive hit
      - Even Marvel will ultimately suffer from the stench in the long run as a lowering tide will lower all the boats. This is why I also root for Sony and Fox's movies to be good too. If Sony's Spiderman movies continue to suck, Fantastic Four sucks and BvS sucks, then the stench will be over the entire genre. Yes, Marvel will continue to make money (as long as they make good movies) but not as much as they would make in a market where there is good product (and excitement) all over the place

        Batman vs Superman is going to be the biggest movie. I guarantee. The two most beloved heroes on screen. Nothing more bad-ass than that. I see at least 2.5 BILLION. And the main reason why this movie will be big is simply BATMAN.

        HAha! Calm down. Ben Affleck's career will be fine. Batman v. Superman will not be a 2011 Green Lantern/Batman & Robin-like disaster. Warner Brothers trusted Zack Snyder to make them three more profitable DC movies (BvS, Justice League part 1 and 2). The rest of the upcoming DC movies will get sequels if they're successful, or just be one-offs if they bomb. But those announced DC movies, are happening regardless. Marvel Studios aren't the ONLY ones capable of making a half decent movie, with comic book characters in it!

        all i can say is this movie screams "Unique" "Innovative" right from the beginning and adding veteran and oscar level talents both on and off the screens is making this movie sound even more awesome, Zack and Goyer's idea at building this universe is really different and creative, so all of this says we will be getting a one of a kind comic book movie which might redefine this genre, so i am sure that in 16 months this movie will be getting massive critical success which will push the commercial success even higher, so it's pretty easy for BvS to cross Avenger 1 box office record. (1.2 Billion)

You're right, I think $1.5B+ is unrealistic. But BvS needs to do $1B, so that would be my expectation.
Another thing to add is the marketing budget WB has allocated for to market all their DC properties - $2B - I am sure BvS will be a decent chunk of that which will hopefully encourge broad audience to attend.

    Er, I think that in WBs estimation a $600-$700 worldwide gross would be considered a dissapointment. Remember that MOS recieved A LOT of negative press, and still did $668 million worldwide.
    Also, I don't agree with "that so many people are hoping it will fail". The majority of the movie going public are not engrossed in the Marvel vs DC discssions happening online. And the majority of the movie going public will provide the majority of the gross intake. It simply hinges on that the majority of people like the movie.
    All that said, $1B would be a challenge - but it's not unrealistic.

      Warner Bros. will probably end up spending around 300 million on Batman v. Superman. So in order to make a decent profit, it needs to make at least over 600 million, JUST like Man of Steel did. Expectation wise, I'm sure they're shooting for at least 800 million. And obviously hoping for over 1 billion.
      As for the Batman v. Superman haters. I'm not yet sure how that will impact the box-office. But Batman v. Superman has a lot more people to win over than say, the 2012 Avengers movie did. That could change with mind-blowing trailers. But between the negative Man of Steel reaction and the unpopular casting decisions, Batman v. Superman has a lot of people who would rather predict it's failure, and hope to be proven right.

        I see your point, but there is a difference between what is publically considered a success and what is simply a profitable movie.
        I have no doubt that BvS will be profitable - but is needs to be considered a success (universally decent reviews, strong world wide gross and generated the necessary excitement for the rest of their DC properties). Most of this will be determined not by hardcore fans, but the general movie going public.
        By the way, only a very small contingent of the movie going public "hate" on BvS. WB doesn't need to convince these people with any trailers or marketing as it will make little difference. They only need to stimulate the interest of the wider movie going public - and it will undoubtedly do that.

        I would disagree with your statement that BVS has a lot more people to win over than the Avengers did. Batman & Superman are the two most iconic superheroes...EVER. Those invested in the Avengers had to see many (not all) of the Marvel products leading up to that movie to understand and know the characters that it used. Whereas, BvS could have been a standalone movie and people would still go out to see it. MoS is not going to be a huge driver for people to go out and see it. Not to mention, there is a decent time gap between the two movies. So those who left with a sour taste in their mouth have had time to let that dissolve and move on. Those that didn't go see it, I can only assume, would still be drawn to see the two most notable superheroes go head to head.

        I disagree with your disagreement. There was never any negativity towards The Avengers. And what Marvel accomplished with that film, was unprecedented at the time. Now that DC has the disadvantage of following that. It simply makes it harder. The mixed reaction to Man of Steel didn't help, of course.

        I don't think DC is at a disadvantage of having to follow the Avengers... if anything it's an advantage, for all the reasons you described. The Avengers have broke the mold and showed that comic book movies can be a great overall movie for everyone and not just comic fans and so people will be more inclined to go see a comic based movie because of that. DC gets to benefit from that. "Rising tide lifts all ships".
        And honestly, I don't think the general movie going audience is going to base their decision to see this movie on whether or not they liked Man of Steal. It's BATMAN VERSUS SUPERMAN for crying out loud... that's reason enough to go see this movie.
        Suicide Squad has reason to worry if BvS is not well received, but people WILL go see Batman & Superman, together, on the big screen. That's pretty much a guarantee.
