Just days after Liam Neeson was asked if he'd like to play Ra's al Ghul on Arrow, Australian actor Matt Nable has landed the role. Arrow star Stephen Amell made the announcement on Twitter:

Nable is probably best known for starring in 2013's Riddick with the Batman-hating Vin Diesel.

In Arrow, Ra's Al Ghul is described as the leader of the League of Assassins and father of Nyssa al Ghul (Katrina Law). Ra's is proud and unforgiving. A ruthless strategist, a master of martial arts and a shaper of history, Ra's carries the wisdom of the ages and protects some of its greatest secrets.

Nable's Ra's al Ghul will be a main character in the upcoming season of Arrow and will make his debut in the fourth episode, "The Magician".

      This whole Network TV vs. cable/premium TV is ridiculous. There are plenty of crappy shows on cable, and great shows on network. There are also plenty of shows that go past 5 seasons and remain good.
      One of the things Arrow has going for it is decades of comic book lore to draw from. The writers don't have to make it all up from scratch.

    Not a criticism Chris, but didn't expect that (not watching it). Don't get me wrong, I've only been watching from last season, so I ain't a fanatic. It's quite good, if you've got an interest & curiosity of who/what characters will prop up next. But it does have a kinda Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV quality to it. I like the Green Arrow, as he's commonly recognised as the guy Batman will go for a pint with down the bar.
    But in terms of are you missing a 'Breaking. Bad', then no. But it is enjoyable, and worth wasting a few hours on.
    The Flash though, production wise looks unmissable. You gotta suck that one up mate.

VERY few things are of the quality of Breaking Bad, but I don't want to watch that show over and over again. I can watch Buffy over and over again. It's like when people say about a movie "It ain't Gone With the Wind". So what if it isn't? Sometimes I just want to see superheroes punch evil in the face or a funny movie like Ghostbusters.

        You're right, majority of folk just want to get entertained so yeah. But me personally, I'm not a TV person or movies in general. I only watch something if its pretty unique or left-field. Graphic novels, comics whatever you wanna call them is just something that's stuck with me through the years, so I take an interest in them passionately. Majority of folk would like a Batman film to be kapow, wham etc, me personally would love for Arkham Asylum to appear on screen. That book is a master class in terror and the inner workings of insanity.
        Bit as I said, nothing wrong with wanting to zone out to some popcorn stuff.
        And hey Ghostbusters is a classic man. I had the zap backpack and the lot when I was a kid ;)

        I like when they go smart, but it should also be fun, it's comic book superheroes afterall. It's about the fantasy and the fun of it. I enjoyed Arkham Asylum, but I wouldn't be looking to Grant Morrison for psychological realism.

      I don't think he ever did, if you watch the interview Neeson didn't hear the interviewer say 'Arrow' and asks him to repeat the question, so the interviewer responds: "would you reprise the role?"

  Highly doubt it. They won't want to reference the dark knight trilogy in any way, shape or form. In this world Ras wouldn't be just a guy who inherits a name from another guy, he'd be the actual dude that uses the lazarus pits.

    Manu Bennett saved Arrow. Season 1 was as boring as hell. Nobody really gives a fuck about the heroes in the show. They only care about the villains. Plus Bennett could have been an amazing Deathstroke but CW screwed his origin story to add drama

        I watch it because I keep thinking "CW will do some good. Look they're introducing The Atom, Black Canary The Flash and Deadshot." Adding CW drama is a bad thing. You really know nothing about Deathstroke if you think they didn't screw him up. He's a badass assassin. His son was murdered. They made a psychopath. He isn't even evil. The miracle made him crazy. That is pure bullshit.

        I know plenty of guys who watch it, regardless, it's not targeted at women. It was a surprise to everyone that it's primary viewership is women. The creator didn't design with that in mind. Dean even says in the pilot, "No chick flick moments." Besides, who cares if it is? It's a good show, that's what matters.

        I'm not saying it's bad, it's pretty average, but not because of its viewership, there are different reasons why :) And I'm not saying it was intended to be a show targeted at women, you are right that it wasn't the intention. But shows that last 10 seasons change their styles according to their viewership, which is what SN has done. The creator wanted one thing, people continuing the show (especially the network) wanted another.
        I really don't care if it's a show for kids or for retired people - I was just stating that saying "while their demographic is females, they do have shows like Arrow and Supernatural." is not really that valid, especially since Arrow is the show we're discussing and SN is the show with mostly female viewership. That's it, I'm not arguing it's a bad show ;)
        BTW I just saw your avatar and I'm guessing you're a fan - that's awesome, don't worry, I'm not attacking your show man ;)

        SPN has remained what it was at its core a show about two brothers. I didn't take it that you're attacking the show, but my point remains valid that while the CW's primary viewership is female, that doesn't mean those shows have or are only designed to appeal to one sex. Arrow is a comic book show, and while females are a growing audience, they are still read mostly by guys, and the show is written by comic book fans.

    But the script of Arrow and many capters are focus about couple situations... whit romantic teen charts songs in the background... sorry not is my fault the CW way... If AMC, BBC, HBO, Showtime or Sundace Channel buy the show and change the marketing team and the writers team...
    But Prerry Little Liars is in a girl teen leveeeeel very up XD... compared whit Arrow, is so better watch Arrow.
    In Arrow only like the flashback scenes in that island...

      I do agree with you that the CW in general is basically focused on teens and romance. But Arrow, soon Flash and I believe Supernatural are the less ones to be only for teens. For example, we have Vampire Diaries and even without watching it I know it focuses more on vampire romance than vampires sucking blood. Arrow is definitely for everyone.
      The romance is obviously for the teens (even though, there has to be romance in a show like that ESPECIALLY if you're Oliver Queen) but that's right about it. IMO, the show is amazing.
      Arrow, imo, focuses more on storytelling than romance and that's a good thing. I just hope it never ends up like Vampire Diaries or even Twilight.

      Yeah, I was surprised that Ra's was brought off the bench, for Arrow. But with Malcolm's ties to The League of Assassins, it makes sense. I think Arrow has already exceeded the amount of love interests for one hero, limit. But I'd like to see Lady Shiva, kick some A$$, on that show!

Since Liam has lost his wife. The man is a workaholic because he doesn't want to spend too much time at home without her. So he probably would have done it if they asked. Nothing is below that man to work on right now.

    I can respect the idea of the man trying to stay busy after such a tremendous loss. But he wouldn't be on Arrow. And if he was it would have to be a "special guest star" type role similar to SLJ on Agents of Shield. It could never been a reoccurring role.
    Also keep in mind his A lister status, he can stay as busy as he wants in the movies. He doesn't audition for roles, he gets handed scripts every day probably.

I'd say Ra's Al Ghul has got to be the most famous Middle Eastern based character in comics history. Yet in live action he's been played by a Japanese guy, an Irish guy and an Australian.

      True and Ricardo Montaban was neither IIRC. But at least he wasn't a white guy playing a colored guy's part. And I doubt there were any Indian actors in the 1960's that Trek could have hired for the role. Even today we only have a handful in Hollywood.

do they ever actually try to find an arabic actor to play Ra's? You have guys like Navid Negahban and Alexander Siddig, either or wouldve made great a Ra's. I mean at the very least they couldve gone with Oded Fehr or something. But jeez

Look, Conroy voices Batman in countless movies, tv shows and video games but all are separate series and nobody gets confused. Before you say "those are different than movies" it's my opinion. I don't really know why anybody would want Liam Neeson to come back to the movies or TV. We've already seen that version. How about a new one? And maybe one that sorta, kinda at least attempts to resemble the comics?

    That's 1 of the reasons I consider "Bruce Wayne" the mask. Characters like Parker & Kent want a normal life too. Batman is essentially married to his career. If "Bruce" isn't seen for consecutive issues its not an abnormality.

      But even Bruce has love interests - Silver St. Cloud, Selina Kyle, Vicki Vale, Julie Madison, Vesper Fairchild, Talia.
      I don't know why some people have a problem with love interests. It reminds me of the Little Rascals' He Man Women Haters Club. Batman is human and has human desires.
      This whole "x is the mask" is ridiculous. The only fake persona is the playboy. The Bruce he shows to people like Alfred is real. Batman's an extension of himself.

        When you're reading Batman, do you care about if something is going to hinder his current relationship or help him get the girl?
        Batman really has no obligations as Bruce. Fox runs the company, he doesn't have to worry about a job, bills, or relationship.
        I have friends that are completely career minded. No desire to be involved & focus the bulk of their energy to work. Batman's the same way. It's why he's got the time to be 10 steps of everyone else.

        Yes, I do care. Why shouldn't I care if I find the relationship interesting? Look at Hush. A big part of that story is whether he can get involved with Catwoman and the issues that brings up. Mask of the Phantasm is one of the best Batman stories and it's built around a relationship.
        Fox runs the day to day, but he's often involved in its direction.
        Many are career minded, but that still doesn't mean they don't ever desire a relationship. Love is a human need.
        It's all rather moot, Green Arrow (even this version) is different than Batman.

        I think about my top 10 favorite Batman stories and none of them have that. I always found the Bruce Wayne stuff to slow down the stories being told.
        Agree to disagree. The stuff I saw & most of the stuff I've heard about, with a couple tweaks, you could swap out Arrow for Batman & its the exact same show.

        Usually every relationship is there for no reason other than to give Bruce somebody to mourn when they get killed or hate when they turn out to be a villain and it's always blatantly obvious which is going to happen. I don't think it's because a relationship with Bruce can't be a good read, but more because of the laziness of the writers. Their sole purpose when writing Batman seems to be nothing but how can we break this guy's heart for the 800th time.
        The only ones I remember liking was the girl from Year Two and the pseudo romance with Sasha Bordeaux.
        The worst one was the doctor in Knightfall. Bruce just happens to be dating a woman who has magic back healing powers. Riiiiiiiiiiiiight.

        If you like Batman, then this show is likely down your alley. instead of going by what you hear, give the show an honest shot.
        While I agree that he's written similar to Batman, it's clear that Oliver is in a constant state of change. After 5 years on an island (not like Bruce at all), he's had to deal with death, being shot, stabbed, tortured, and betrayed. He's evolving into the Emerald Archer from the comics. A big difference between Ollie and Bruce is that Bruce plays the playboy, Oliver is in fact a ladies man.

        I've heard a lot of great stuff about the show, its mostly come down to time. Burn Notice ended, I've been taking a hiatus from TV series. Aside from watching my favorite sports teams, we basically have the Sprout Network on at our house for our 16 month old. Super Why is essentially the only superheroes on our TV nowadays.
        Thanks for the recommendation, though.

        And to be honest with you, I always cringe when people use the Hush storyline as an example. I thought it was the biggest 'all flash with no substance' Batman story I've ever read.
        I'm happy for you if you liked it; most people seem to, but I found that story to be grossly overrated.

        Love interest is not the problem, it's how they represent it ! Nowadays, in order to show how complex a love story could be, there's always cheating and explicit sexuality !

    Yep. Most comic books feature their love life as the B story to the superhero-ing. Green Arrow's love life has been a major part of Green Arrow's comic book story forever. He's either always been hooked up with Black Canary or cheating on Black Canary. Nobody has ever complained about any of it until it's used in live action.

  Arrow ain't perfect but boy do I enjoy it! Great stunt choreography and a well paced show (Season 2 especially). Vast improvement on Smallville, as long as they don't drag it out! Though Stephen Amell did say once that he thought the show had a good 5 or 6 seasons in it.
