Liam Neeson says he'd play Ra's al Ghul again 'in a heartbeat' (video)

MTV caught up with Liam Neeson and asked if he'd reprise his role as Ra's Al Ghul. "I would, in a heartbeat, if it came my way, yeah,” Neeson replied. "Very much so."

Ra's al Ghul is going to be featured in the upcoming season of Arrow, and MTV was curious if Neeson had been approached for the role. However, if you watch the video above, it's clear that Neeson didn't understand the question, and didn't hear the part about Arrow. All he heard was "have you been asked to return as Ra's al Ghul?". Just about every website online is running with the headline "Liam Neeson would love to play Ra's al Ghul on Arrow", but that's simply not true. This is how rumors get started!

One thing's for sure, Ra's al Ghul is coming to TV for season 3 of Arrow. Warner Bros. hasn't announced who's playing him yet, but you can get a sneak peek at Ra's in the trailer below.

Neeson went on to explain what advice he'd give to the actor that lands the role:

"They have to believe in their philosophy," Neeson said. "Ra’s al Ghul absolutely believed what he was doing was ultimately saving civilization, and it was quite a good argument he comes up with. Throughout the ages this fraternity, that brought the plague to wipe out a section of mankind because it needed to be regenerated again. Very dangerous, but you have to believe it."

Great Ra's, one of the best villains of the Nolan trilogy. I just wish they had gone all out, Lazarus Pit, etc.

I felt like they did a good job creating a mythos around him which implied he may or may not be immortal without coming off campy. Though it's more likely that Ra's Al Ghul has been several different people over generations it's left slightly up to interpretation.
Based on the death of Ras in Batman Begins it would seem reasonable that his body would be beyond a trip to the Lazarus Pit so it may be that his immortality ended in that explosion. We really don't know. I often find that more interesting than knowing.

      Yes, to GREEN ARROW. She lost to a superhero in a good fight, but that was pure badass when she took down the security guards and when she fought Slade's army. Bane had a great presence until the end when he was killed like a chump. How was Deathstroke not effective?

      Green Arrow is not a is superhero in Arrow? I don't think so. They tried (and failed) to keep Nolan's realistic atmosphere. How is taking down a few guards badass at all? She's part of the League of Shadows and beating up guards is impressive? Deathstroke was nowhere near Bane's commanding presence. Deathstroke had a horrible costume by the way so that weakened his presence. Another thing was the dialogue ("YOU'RE DONE WHEN I SAY YOU'RE DONE"). Deathstroke was only effective because they made Green Arrow suck in Arrow so not much to attack and you think Bane went out dumb? Deathstroke smells TNT so he has enhanced senses. Yet he doesn't check to see if Smoak was carrying something and the justification for that was that he was distracted? The rest of the finale was filled with cheesy shit. Oh and how was I an ass? I just said Nyssa barley fought and Deathstroke wasn't effective.

  You never provide specifics, you just make claims. It's not like there aren't glaring flaws in The Dark Knight Trilogy. For instance, it doesn't make a lick of sense how Bruce was bankrupted. That's not a nitpick, it's a glaring error in logic. In the Dark Knight, the film is really about Harvey, Batman's not even the focal point in his own film. Season 2 of Arrow built so well to the final confrontation between Oliver and Slade, and it didn't disappoint. I can't say the same for Bane vs. Batman round 2.

    TV is currently doing storytelling better than film. I'll take a great season of TV over a trilogy damn near any day, but still it's hard to compare because of what long form storytelling affords.
    It's a huge error because no way a terrorist attack happens and trades aren't either closed down or cancelled afterwards. Also, how in the hell would it not be easily provable that those trades were fraudulent.

      They would definitely shut it down to assess the damages, and certainly would during a terrorist attack. They also wouldn't let those trades go through. The sheer volume of trades that it would take to bankrupt Bruce would move markets, but somehow they wouldn't stop that to see if something wrong went on?

      You're wrong, it was a business deal, and this point is irrelevant. You're arguing over terminology. You haven't gone to the core of my argument. I'm not a finance expert, but put options are used as hedging instruments, so why would Bane have Bruce buy lots of put options?
      It also makes no sense because it could easily be proven that his finger print was stolen. A known thief was in Wayne Manor, a fact that can be corroborated, and yet somehow the fraud would take years to prove.
      It also don't make much sense that he would be booted off the board as easy as that.

      I can't let you get away with something so obnoxious and juvenile. Those transactions involve trading something. A loan is a trade. You trade collateral and often a down payment for the loan. And I think you mean deposit, a bank account is neither a trade nor a transaction, it's an asset. Regardless, none of this is relevant to why Bane's plan doesn't make sense. You're splitting hairs.       In the case of the put options, it is both a transaction, and a trade. Money is being traded for the options.

      They had no reason to believe it wasn't wayne who made those transactions, Bane didn't announce what he was doing in the stock exchange. There would have to be an investigation into the hold up AND a fraud investigation into Wayne's trading activity. Both of these would take longer than the entire span of time covered in the film.

      You don't have to announce it, the transactions were made during a crime, they wouldn't be allowed to go through. I'm sure the fraud investigation would take time, but in the meanwhile, it's doubtful that they would let the guy be bankrupted under such fishy circumstances. Just google this stuff, it won't take you long to figure out the logic of the scene is sketchy at best.

    The film revolves around Harvey. Bruce and The Joker's plan is all about Harvey. Batman's the least interesting character in the film. He's constantly behind the eight ball.

    He was bankrupt because he, via fake fingerprints, made questionable investments and lost a ton of money selling his majority holdings in Wayne Enterprises. The catch with this is that it's more complicated than simple fraud, likely his former shares were purchased and no longer available. Though it would be easy to prove fraud long term, as Luscious so clearly explains for those who can't keep up, for the short term that money is gone.

I guess in your neighborhood handgun sized wenches can zip people into the sky, helicopters can fly upside down, cars can turn into motorcycles, cell phones can create 3D live images of entire cities, capes are hang gliders, microwaves can vaporize water supplies, faces can be burned half off with no consequence, nuclear fusion is not only possible but can also be contained in something smaller than a compact car.
      There was almost NOTHING realistic about the dark knight trilogy. These were the first superhero films which made us believe in the fantasy, which is something they deserve credit for.

      I think people as a whole either have good taste, or can recognize things that are done well even if they also have poor taste on many other levels. The Dark Knight trilogy has been lifted up GLOBALLY, aside from a few detractors online.
      History shows us that anytime something is good, or the best of its kind, people try to knock it down. All you have to do is look at Apple's profits, and the online hate for all things apple from a select few who probably haven't even owned an apple product. Look at all the car commercials that bash their more successful high-end competition.
      Any time something is universally hailed as great, or the best of it's kind, it seems like people with baseless claims against it crawl out of the woodwork online. You'll notice you rarely see these types in any official/mainstream capacity. They are almost exclusively nobodies.

      The Dark Knight Trilogy is just one interpretation of Batman. The reason he's been able to survive for 75 years is that new minds are constantly taking over and providing new takes on the character. The idea of "get[ting] Batman on a fundamental level" is misguided. Outside of being a man fighting crime with a bat theme, the character is infinitely malleable. Nolan and Goyer get the "essence of the character" they created, a character constructed from source material but in every way their own. The DCAU Batman, the Arkham Batman, the Nolan Batman, the Schumacher Batman, the Burton Batman, the Adam West Batman, the Scott Synder Batman, the Frank Miller Batman, the Jeph Loeb Batman, and the Kane/Finger Batman are all legitimate interpretations of an amorphous character. You may not like or approve of all of them, but none is more "right" or canonical than another. There is no such thing as a misinterpretation of Batman. In the end, "anyone can be Batman" and anything (within reason) can be Batman.

The Legue of Shadows are terrorists, they just exist on a level we don't have in reality. We have Eco-terrorists in reality, religious and political terrorists, and people like the Colorado shooter and the boston marathon bombers. Ras exist in a different realm than these, he seems to be (in TDK Trilogy) an ethical terroris. He finds decadence and a high crime rate reprehensible and wants to destroy such societies. This really isn't too different that Islamic terrorism, which finds the west decadent and sinful, but they are explicitly told to attack not Muslims. Ras has a similar goal but more loosely defined motivations.

Neesons' Ra's was one of the defining moments of the Nolan trilogy, The way he was portrayed and the way it set up the whole trilogy. As much as I loved Rises, it is this reason in my view BB and TDK were the peak of the three. The level of performance as well as the plot being thick throughout. Amazing.

People should remember, i.e. Marvel trolls etc, that they rewrote the Oscar nomination process so that they could never have the debacle that was TDK not being nominated due to genre, happen again. Everyone from the inside knows that that movie was gonna land a shitload of awards.

He looks a bit confused by the question to me, as though he doesn't really know what the show "Arrow" is. But I'd love to see him do it. I'd have no problem with the supposed continuity issues. In fact, I've always wanted to see classic Batman actors reinterpret their characters in new continuities. Danny DeVito as a more civilized Penguin, Jim Carey as a less flamboyant Riddler, Liam Neeson as a more overtly supernatural Ra's al Ghul -- I'd love to see all of those.

I'm not a fan of Arrow at all and I am a HUGE fan of Neeson so I would dread the day Neeson ever played a character on that show although it's not going to happen so I can rest easy anyway lol.

  I don't want to get into a argument basically I, personally, am not a fan of the acting from the actors and the storylines.
  For example I love the character Shado from the comics and I hate what they did to her on the show.
  It's just my own personal opinion though. I would like to see Neeson in the role again but personally I would like to see him on the big screen.

Actually, the podcast I am a part of interviewed Denny O'Neil in 2005/2006; its pronounced the same way as in Batman: TAS. When he created the character he researched the spelling & pronunciation.

It won't happen just like Bale was not going to comeback. I think he was being diplomatic. He did do a good job in Begins and his cameo in TDKR was a nice touch to the film.

Bale wasn't coming back because it wasn't in the same universe. Goyer even considered making MOS tie in to TDKT but Bale said no because Nolan wasn't directing and he didn't want to but DC used the same actor even though they're in the same universe. I mean look Kevin Conroy and George Newbern are in Injustice but it's not connected to JLU. Tim Daly and Conroy were in the 2 Batman Superman movies but it wasn't connected to Superman: TAS and Batman: TAS and nobody ever gets confused. That's why they could use Grant Gustin as Flash in JL even though it's not the same universe

I guesstimate The Mandarin is the Iron Man's Joker and Marvel fans wanted to see an actual rivalry with the two characters. Some fans felt cheated with the twist at the end. I can get why in a way. General audiences didn't know and didn't care, which can also explain the Ra's Al Ghul twist also. I thought the movie was alright.
I guess it's like if in The Dark Knight, Batman breaks into the skyscraper at the end and walks in on the Joker without makeup, drinking and watching TV and admits he's just an actor. Then Sal Maroni walks in and says, "He's not the Joker!..... I'm the Joker!".

Because Neeson was actually Ra's unlike either Kingsley or Pearce who were never really Mandarin. One was an idiot actor - the other just stole what the Mandarin stood for.

  It was stated since Iron Man that the Mandarin was never going to be the Mandarin from the source material. The 10 Rings were being set up as a terrorist organization rather then actual mystical rings.
  And had Kingsley's character actually be the terrorist Mandarin, people would've still complained because he didn't have reptilian hands & 10 magical rings.

    BUT - the Hail to the King short film that came out *after Iron Man 3 in which literally states that the Mandarin s a real person and he is really pissed off that someone stole his name/ideals.
    My point was one movie faked you out on who the actual villain one. One strung you along and then revealed that character didn't even exist.

      Correct...but that doesn't mean he'll be just like the comic book version. It was said Trevor had plastic surgery, so I'd assume Kingsley could still play the actual Mandarin.
      A fake out that I never bought, even before "Hail to the King." Once I heard him state there was plastic surgery, I figured there was still an actual Mandarin out there.

Because in the end, it was still an incarnation of Ras. Whatever abomination Marvel created in Iron Man 3 wasn't even remotely close to the The Mandarin. They just slapped the name on whatever Guy Pearce was playing. The Mandarin is Iron Man's arch nemesis. You just don't do that with such an important villain. It's all subjective of course, but I personally hated it.

I don't watch the show because, much like Gotham & Agents of SHIELD, I don't have interest in the show's concept (plus, if I want to watch Batman, I'll watch Batman.) So I don't know how those characters have been portrayed, but what do you mean by "ripped off"? Nothing I've heard about the show included ripping off characters (well, except Batman). Do you just mean "reinventing" or their "interpretations"?
