Weta Digital to work on 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' visual effects

There's been a lot of debate online about whether or not Man of Steel was a good movie, but one thing most people can agree on is that it had great visual effects. Weta Digital has worked on movies like Avatar, The Avengers, and even Man of Steel. In a new interview with Collider, visual effects supervisors from Weta Digital confirmed that they'll be working on Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice as well:

“We are working on the Man of Steel sequel, yes… We can’t say much more than that, but we’re excited.”

Weta Digital was responsible for the big Krypton opening scene in Man of Steel and it'll be interesting to see what they get to work on this time around. With characters like Aquaman and other Justice League members getting cameos, they'll certainly have a lot to play with.

  I thought it was ok. I'm not a Superman fan but it was way better than Superman Returns (which I hated) and I've only seen bits and pieces of the Christopher Reeve movies. I thought that the fight scenes towards the end went on way too long and I wasn't a fan of some of the visual effects.

      lol, I know. Mostly the ones at the end though with Superman and Zod. I don't think Weta Digital worked on those. When things start looking like a video game, it really takes me out of the movie.

        No I agree. There's this one scene where towards the end where Zod is swinging Supes around by the cape, and right before he flings him there's a like a single frame where the camera zones in directly in Zod's pupil. I thought it looked really cheesy -- nowhere near as great as the opening Krypton scene.

    If all that destruction isn't a key point in the BvS, I'll be so annoyed. The destruction just got way too excessive. I was legitimately annoyed. I mean is there any reason at all that they absolutely needed to destroy a satellite, fall back to earth and destroy multiple skyscrapers in a part of the city that was untouched by the "earth drill things"?

        If it wasn't for CG we wouldn't even be having this surge of superhero movies. CG had made this all possible. They couldn't make have made movies like this even 20 years ago. I respect the hell out of how Nolan made Batman, but when it comes to characters like Superman, I want to see a scale of epic-ness that you can't do with a man on a wire. CG me to death, please.

        The native NYer in me wants to slap the shit out of you. In Avengers, a giant flying metal space whale - that carried passengers full of of aliens - falls on a building in Manhattan. Superman gets thrown through empty buildings in a fictional city and you compare it to 9/11? Go fuck yourself.

    I always feel that Superman Returns is not a bad superhero film. It is a very good superhero film. But a bad Superman film.
    And you don't see old Superman films? Come on. First Superman film is great superhero film. The second one also a great superhero film. And you can't judge that times effects and nowdays. Like nowdays effects can't compete with 2030-2040 effects. Just like that. After 30 years nowdays maximum great effects will look joke. Like first Batman film was so dark when it release but now dark mean Nolan Batman films. Burton's Batman films now look childish compared to Nolan films.

      The Donner and Singer Superman films sucked. 0 action. People are complaining "Superman doesn't kill" but he killed in the comics and in Superman II he killed General Zod and in Superman IV: The Quest for Shit, he killed Nuclear Man.People complain "Superman wouldn't destroy that guy's car after a bar fight" but he beat up some guy in Superman II. People complain there was too much CGI but it was amazing and nobody complained about Avatar, Thor 1 and 2 and The Avengers having too much CGI. They're fantastic at motion captured effects like Gollum, the Navi, Mark Ruffalo's Hulk and Zod's armor, which makes me think they might do the same for Batman's TDKR armor in his battle with Supes...

I believe this is already the next DC Animated movie. Ad adaptation of this anyway. Not that it can't be a live action movie as well. Not sure I'd make it the FIRST JL movie though.

  Bro... as much as I loved MoS, I agree with you.
  The last fight was a little too over the top with the cgi.
  I'm thinking that Batman and Superman fight will have less cgi. The reason why I think that is cause of Batman's style and approach to fighting (unless they give him a suit like "iron man") [please no]

I thought WETA also worked on the flying. MPC mostly did the Smallville attack and Double Negative the third act in Metropolis. But I figure they all worked throughout the film as well.
WETA did amazing work and imo the best VFX's in MOS. Great that they'll return for BvS!

Despite all the Man of Steel criticism, I don't expect Snyder to ease up on the action and destruction. And we don't actually KNOW that Aquaman will appear? If he does, I want him riding on either a giant Loch Ness Monster, or a gigantic Kraken. Heck, I wanna see Giganta!

I'm not sure it would work as the first film but it can very much be used as a connected plot between films.
My hope would be that Batman v Superman would be about escalation. Superman's presence would keep the US government and US enemies (Atlantis?, Bialya, etc) on its toes. Forcing them to do their own super powered research as a response to Superman and other super powered "Mystery Men" Wonder Woman Flash etc. They can create Captain Atom, Led corps will start cloning projects and kryptonite experiments leading to Metallo and Also the government can start Task Force X. Bialya can also eventually attack via a nuclear strike. All this chaos and uneasiness can cause Clark to really consider his actions and the reason why he choses to be the boy scout, because to enforce his awesome might would scare the whole world.

I din't like most of the VFX of Man of steel but the opening sequence was darn good. I am glad WETA will do the film 2 . I think they will be the leading effects house as there are no major productions in the next year unless of course something else comes up. But i have a feeling WETA will do 80% of the shots if not all. After that they have the Avatar trilogy . And maybe Jungle Book and Apes part 3 . so i would love WETA doing sci-effects. Their work on Iron Man 3 was amazing !
