on Bruce Wayne to be a regular character on 'Gotham' TV series

Casting is underway for Gotham, the upcoming TV series that follows the early career of Jim Gordon. Thanks to a posting at TV Show Auditions, we now know a ton of new information. The pilot episode will begin shooting in March 2014 and the series is scheduled for a Fall 2014 release on FOX. But the biggest piece of news is that a 10-year-old Bruce Wayne will be a regular character on the show. The new info also confirms last week's rumor that Gordon will be investigating the murders of Thomas and Martha Wayne in the first episode.

A 10-year-old Bruce Wayne is among the roles that are now being cast as series regulars on the upcoming Fox TV series "Gotham" which explores the origin stories of Commissioner James Gordon and the villains that made Gotham City famous. Under development for over a year, the project has now been given a direct-to-series order by the network, which won an intense bidding war for the Warner Bros. Television rights to the show. Shooting on the pilot episode will get underway in March, 2014 and will center on Gotham City PD rookie homicide detective James Gordon who investigates the double murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne.

If you know a young actor who would be a great fit for Bruce Wayne, head on over to TV Show Auditions to learn where to send headshots and résumés. Keep it locked on Batman News for all the latest on Gotham!

So far so good for this series. I like where it's starting.

I'd rather the story began around the time that Bruce leaves Gotham. That way assuming the show is a big hit they could retire the show after 7 or 8 seasons with the return of Bruce maybe midway through the season and lead up to the first appearance of Batman for the series finale. That would be a great way to go out... but I'm going way ahead on this one.

Also this kind of dashes my hopes of seeing Harleen Quinzel as the spunky criminal psychologist/intern for the GCPD. lol

Harley could still be on the show. She could be like a teenage intern. I think that would be cool.

Yeah, except she strikes me as being a bit younger than Bruce. But you never know I suppose.

Normally I think she is, but they might take liberties with the ages of various characters in order to make the show more interesting.

Not sure having a 10 year-old Bruce Wayne be a regular character would work. Have him seen through his parents murder, the funeral, and then a few glimpses here and there for the first season. Possibly for the second season have a time jump where Bruce Wayne is now in his mid-20s but has fleed Gotham City and really focus on the escalation of crime that Gordon has to deal with (essentially on his own).

FYI, at the end of the first paragraph, you wrote "investing" instead of "investigating."
Hm, intriguing premise. I can't wait to see what they do with it. I hope it's like Gotham Central. (Although characters like Harvey Bullock, Renee Montoya, and Crispus Allen should technically still be kids like Bruce, whatever, it's an adaptation, so I still want to see them.)

This is going to be real intriguing. Apart from the murder cases and stuff, I hope they dramatically focus on Gordon's personal situations and fears. They should try to make it moderately emotional and touching to showcase Gordon's commitment and loyalty towards the good of Gotham.

I didn't think it would be set this far in the past. This kind of killed some of my excitement. Whatever though, I'll still give it a fair chance. It'd be funny if it turned out that 10 year old Bruce Wayne will be a recurring character... in flashbacks.

How can they put in really any Batman villains besides the falcone and other mob families;all of Batman's villains are around the same age as Bruce so are they going to have 10 year old kids running around killing poeple

Aren't you forgetting the 600 year age difference? Unless you're talking about him in Batman Begins, in which case he's still at least 15-20 years Bruce's senior.

Not all Batman media has to follow the same continuity you idiot. In the 1989 Batman, Joker killed Batman's parents. In the comicbook and Nolan Continuity, Joe Chill killed Batman's parents. You can't expect everyone to retell the same story over and over and over without taking a few liberties. Anyways you're wrong. Haven't you seen Batman Begins? Jim Gordon was part of the Gotham P.D. when Chill murdered Bruce's parents.

      1. Dagon Crows Avatar
        Dagon Crows

I agree that it doesn't have to be the same but he's not wrong. In the comics Gordon was a transfer from Chicago and came back to Gotham around the same time Bruce did.

        1. Darkahsoka Avatar
          Darkahsoka

Depends on the comics. The latest comics have him there from before Bruce's parents were shot.

And the Chicago thing I thought was Loeb made him transfer out of Gotham as part of some sort of coverup he set up (to cover up election rigging or something that Gordon had discovered), and Gordon came back 15 years later, when Bruce was starting up as Batman.

    2. Darkahsoka Avatar
      Darkahsoka

No plot holes at all. What an absurd mindset. Some Batman media has Gordon in Gotham well before that. In fact, IIRC the Chicago thing was Gordon transferring to Chicago, staying there for 15 years, and then coming back, in "Batman Year One".

And in the New 52, he looks to have been there since the beginning and all the way through (transports young bruce in a squad car with his partner Jim Corrigan).

Nolan's trilogy had Gordon there after Bruce's parents got shot, and while those movies were certainly not without their own plotholes, none of said plotholes came from Gordon being there when Bruce was young. I'm almost certain I recall at least one of the animated series that are out there have him be there as well.

So please, at least try to come up with some sort of legitimate criticism if you must be a negative nancy about the show.

Seriously, how will we be seeing the "origins of the villains that made Gotham famous" if the show takes place when Bruce is ten?

    1. lethargicj Avatar
      lethargicj

I think the The Penguin would be good. He seems like a guy who could easily be 10 years older or so than Batman. So they can start off with him at 20 or early 20s and we watch his rise to power over the course of the series.

I'd bet money we see The Red Hood or The Red Hood gang like Zero Year.

Ventriloquist is older so he could be around. Ra's obviously is always around. Clayface doesn't really have to have a set age, he's clay after all. The Reaper started decades before Batman, they could use him somehow.

Yes, a lot of the main ones are probably out of the picture in this time frame, but WB probably wouldn't want those guys used on TV anyway.

I know Gotham is corrupt with all the gangs controlling everything, but I thought all the craziness came in when Batman appeared. If they go with a 10 year old Bruce, I hope we at least see young versions of people with similar backgrounds, like Thomas Elliot, Oswald Cobblepot, or Roman Sionis.

Hope they spend some screentime showing how Bruce is dealing with his loss, at home with Alfred, at school starting to isolating himself from the other kids...

As I said before, it all depends on how much production value will they put into this, specially the actors.

I generally find the majority of cable shows to be vastly overrated. The only one I ever truly loved is The Killing and it's been cancelled 12 times.

The only thing I watch on Fox is the singing competitions. I haven't watched a scripted Fox show since Dollhouse in 2009. Gotham being on Fox is my only concern about the show.

It would be cool if they tied it into their films. Whoever they cast as Gordon in the films should make a cameo at the start of the 1st season and from there do a flashback of whoever they cast as the younger Gordon as he tells his stories from his rookie days days at Gotham.

  26. Roni Avatar

I'm quite afraid this Gotham show will become yet another Smallville, which does nothing to contribute to the current stream of movies that are coming out. Rather opting to create a universe of its own, the fact the murder of the Waynes will play a big role in the first episode brings me to think this will also become a big season-size arc that will add unnecessary complexity to a rather simple act of evil and desperation, tieing their deaths to some massive conspiracy plotted by an evil mob boss.
