on Joseph Gordon-Levitt to play Batman in 'Justice League'? [Update]

Update: Joseph Gordon-Levitt's reps claim that this report is "entirely false". Should we believe them? I think Steve Weintraub of Collider summed it up best:

Now, onto the original report...

By now we've all seen The Dark Knight Rises and know that Christopher Nolan left the door open by introducing a new Batman... Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character, Robin "John" Blake. Drew McWeeny of HitFix just dropped a bombshell rumor regarding the future of Batman on film. According to McWeeny's sources, Joseph Gordon-Levitt "absolutely will be appearing in Justice League as the new Batman". But the story gets much more interesting than that. McWeeny goes on to explain that we may see Gordon-Levitt in the cape and cowl even before Justice League -- in next summer's Superman movie, Man of Steel.

That's right... Batman may have a cameo in Man of Steel to set up the inevitable Justice League movie that Warner Bros. hopes to release in the summer of 2015. According to Hitfix's report, Warner Bros. is also looking to bring back at least one more character from Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy. Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon, perhaps?

Keep in mind this is just a rumor right now, but HitFix is a credible website with a pretty good track record. Nonetheless, this is by far the biggest rumor regarding Batman's future on the big screen we've heard yet. How do you feel about Joseph Gordon-Levitt suiting up as Batman? Would you like to see a cameo in Man of Steel? Let me know what you think in the comments below!

Please no. Bruce Wayne is in the Justice League. Keep this separate from the Nolan-verse. Big mistake you'll be making, WB.

I Hope this doesnt happen, it would be cool to see JGL's incarnation of batman, but this will ruin the continuity of the dark knight trilogy and the realistic and tangible world that chris nolan created will be destroyed.. if the justice league movie turns out to be a flop, then the producers have my permission to die.

Bring it on ! Turning Nolans trilogy into a greater DC Universe would be Awsome !

I know Nolan said Super Heroes don't exist in his dojo but this is just to HUGE an opportunity for WB to pass on !

How about this for a cameo at the end of Man of Steel , Superman has saved earth from Zod everybody knows about him the world has a new saviour after credit scene , Auction house item up for bid a green crystallised substance origin unknown bought by a telephone bid by M . Malone cut to the green substance in a ( Bat ) cave like place being shaped into a Batarang then thrown at a wall Batman Begins style , the Kryptonite Batarang glows green the cut to black !

I like it, but it doesn't have to be JGL for it to work. Batman/Bruce Wayne should be re-introduced in the Justice League Movie. Nolan's trilogy is a stand-alone work, and it should remain that way.

I see what you're saying, but i think Nolan pushed the "realism" stuff  too far. I can't imagine Nolan's Batman, side by side with Martian Manhunter, for instance! LOL

I really don't know if that would be a good idea, using and mixing the "Nolanverse" in JL. Would be a tough task, with great chances to be ridiculous! I really can't see how it would going to work. Besides, i think i prefer if WB leave Nolan's bat-trilogy alone, untouchable, you know?

      I don't know man!

      1. EBo Rises Avatar
        EBo Rises

I do hear you bro ! I just think WB can not afford to let go of everything Nolan has built and start again the loss of dollar could be massive ! And as for bringing SC-FI elements into Nolans world , I know some people wont want to hear it but just look at MARVEL have Aliens and Asgardians hurt the authenticity of their movies ? Not at all infact it has enhanced the whole MARVEL UNIVERSE when it comes to getting that stuff right if you have talented writers and directors on board ( Branagh , Wheadon ) it should seem plausible !

And my final point I don't want to offend any Bat fans but some people hold the notion of Nolans films being based holy on reality like it is the holy grail or something when the truth is Nolans films have HUGE lapses in reality at the end of the day it's just a film not reality , so to close anything is possible in a film if it is handled with respect and intelligence I see no reason why we could not see The Flash or Green Lantern or Martian ManHunter patrolling the streets of Nolans Gotham !

        1. William L Avatar
          William L

Yeah, it all depends on the script. Like i said, it's not impossible, but would be a very tough task using the Nolanverse for DC. You know, DC is even more fantastic and "cosmic" than Marvel! In any cases, something really epic is on it's way, we'll see!

About Nolan style, i prefer using the term "fantastic realism". His universe is possible, but unlikely, you know what i mean? Take a look at Inception! Inception universe would fit with some DC characters... if we push it a little bit! hehe

All of you guys are saying that "Joseph would ruin Batman's place in the J.L." did you guys ever think that WB might bring Christopher Nolan as a producer/director with Synder in the Justice League movie? Are you guys all high on something.. or did you forget that Nolan stated that it's "THE LEGEND ENDS" so.. considering that Bruce Wayne is Batman no more in the Nolan-verse and Man of Steel is part of Nolan-verse as well.. then isn't that up to them to decide since they won't (I hope they don't) make big mistakes like The Avengers did?

So their giving in to the fanboys/fangirls that disliked the final scene on dark knight rises?

I don't think Justice League needs to be connected to christopher nolans batman films because he stated that the third will be his last batman film also it will just ruin the efforts of Nolan's Batman Films being a Trilogy as Nolan originally planned for it to be so.... Justice League should just be connected to a new Batman reboot instead

  11. BatmanofIndia Avatar

No! I 'm looking forward to the JL movie, but they should leave Nolan's trilogy untouched!

Aliens and superpowers aren't gonna fit for characters like John Blake or Gordon. Nolan won't have it anyway. I say this rumour is crap.
PS: You think they'll make a JL movie and NOT have Bruce Wayne as Batman? Seriously?

  12. drkstr17 Avatar
    drkstr17

Interesting, but then you start to think... Would Warner Bros. create a Justice League franchise without Bruce Wayne as Batman? John Blake's name is ROBIN, but now he's going to be BRUCE WAYNE? Hmmm, doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

Gary Oldman said he won't come back as Gordon just like Bale and Nolan said they are done with batman (though bale said he may consider if Chris does it again big IF, but Nolan no means that is that)

I don't like this at all. The Trilogy should be left as it is (just like in comics The Dark Knight Returns it is its own as is epic) well that is very easy in comics than in movies but no reboot don't make it a continuation of the trilogy

Only it isn't it's own: Batman: Year One, Spawn/Batman, All-Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder, The Dark Knight Returns, and The Dark Knight Strikes Back are all connected and in a shared universe.

This is stupid! It really is. Batman had his successful reboot through Christopher Nolan and co. Now it's Superman's turn! He doesn't need any help. He doesn't need a cameo from Batman, Wonder Woman or anyone else. Leave him alone!! Let Man of Steel, Zack Snyder, and Henry Cavill do their thing! Superman needs a killer reboot just like Batman received. Why does he need help from other franchises? He doesn't! He has a fantastic, fully capable creative team behind him and he needs to prove himself ON HIS OWN. So forget Batman and forget Justice League! Let Superman do his thing!!

    1. lethargicj Avatar

It's not about "helping" Superman, it's about starting to connect DC's movie universe just like Marvel did. As the article stated, the cameo would be after the credits, it wouldn't be part of the movie.

i don't think its true. zack snyder said in an interview a few months ago that man of steel is not connected to a justice league movie. this could change after its released but it means it's pretty unlikely that they wrote batman into the movie.

No offense to gordon-levit he is too short. Yes bale was small but he had a bigger character to present. I wish batman would make a cameo but as a shadow figure, that we know he is batman as the character and not revealing the actor yet

I have a really strong feeling that armie hammer will be cast as the batman in justice league. I just pray they keep somewhat of the serioisness that nolan did and just expand on it a bit. Maybe making batman stronger and more of a phenom type guy but still keeping it as realistic as possible.

  19. BruceNolan Avatar
    BruceNolan

Batman is my favorite superhero by far, but I don't want to see him in a Superman film.  Remember Christopher Nolan came up with the story of Man of Steel and is producing it?  Why would he choose to have JGL make a cameo in his movie?  I'm really pumped for Man of Steel, and I could go without a Batman cameo, I think it would be distracting.  As far as the JGL as Batman in Justice League movie rumor goes, I'm not a huge fan of that, either.  I don't see Batman as Batman unless if it's Bruce Wayne behind the cowl, not John Blake.  I feel like that really takes away from the superhero if it's not actually Wayne in the movie...

  20. lethargicj Avatar
    lethargicj

First of all, JGL's people have denied this story. Could be lying but there's that.

Secondly, JGL is one of my favorite actors alive, but I think he's a horrible choice for Batman. He just doesn't have the build for it. Put all the fake sculpted muscles in the suit you want, I'm still not going to buy it. And the idea that the JLA would have a non-Bruce Wayne Batman is just silly.

John Blake has had no training to be Batman and he doesn't have Bruce Wayne's money. In theory, all he has is a left over suit, a cave full of puddles, a fancy computer and maybe a Batpod. JLA material?

Only way this could possibly make sense is if the other guy in the cameo is Christian Bale and we find out that there has been like a 5 year jump since TDKR and Bale came back to train JGL properly. Otherwise the idea that John Blake would be in the Justlice League is idiotic. You might as well give me a Batsuit and let me in too then.

I love JGL.But I never want to see him as Batman.Come on.Batman is very tall and masculine.Even Christian Bale was not that big.(But still the best Batman yet)So it's time for a more comic book Batman. And Nolan's trilogy stands on its own.His realistic world should not be ruined by being introduced into a Superman or JL movie.

As awesome as that sounds, i dont believe its true. I think warner bros wants to start fresh with batman because if you really think about it, Bruce Wayne is Batman and i think it would be hard to see a batman movie without bruce. I think its a great opportunity for wb to continue with blakes character but more of a batman/robin cross bread franchise and i believe it would do.really well in the theatres.

Like I posted on Facebook, I hope this isn't true! It's not fair to Superman! He needs his own reboot just like Batman did. Forget Justice League and, for the moment, forget Batman. It's Superman's turn and Man of Steel needs to be left alone to do its own thing and make its own impact just like Nolan's Batman trilogy did! Just let Man of Steel do its thing.
