Update 03/21/11: Entertainment Weekly (which is owned by Warner Bros.' parent company Time Warner) is reporting that Joseph Gordon-Levitt will not be playing Alberto Falcone in The Dark Knight Rises. Let the speculation continue...

After confirming that Joseph Gordon-Levitt joined the cast of The Dark Knight Rises, Variety is back with another big scoop. According to the trade, Joseph Gordon-Levitt will be playing Alberto Falcone in The Dark Knight Rises. Alberto Falcone (aka The Holiday Killer) is the son of Carmine Falcone, who was played by Tom Wilkinson in Batman Begins. Perhaps this is what Gary Oldman was referring to when he said that Christopher Nolan brings the story back to Batman Begins. What do you think about Joseph Gordon-Levitt's new role? Update: Perhaps this is still just a major rumor at this point? Jeff Sneider of Variety tweeted the following statements on Twitter:

Let me stress that NO ONE with the authority to do so has CONFIRMED this info. Not WB, not reps and certainly not Nolan or other producers. Regardless, I trust my sources & stand by my story 100%.

While this isn't "official" news, I think we can stand by Variety's sources and trust that we'll see Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Alberto Falcone in The Dark Knight Rises.

    I don't understand that article. The subhead is an "update" saying "tipped," but there is no added, sourced information in the body of the story confirming this information as having come from Warner Brothers or Christopher Nolan. I'll believe it when WB sends out a release or Nolan says it himself.

    Thats what I love about Nolans series, he still keeps the Gotham Mafia angle alive. Although, I was hoping to see Black Mask, The Penguin, or Rupert Thorn controlling Gothams last traditional organized crime syndicate...

      Yeah , the slide from normal organised crime to crazy symbolic crime, just through Batmans presence ! Also we know the Falcones have a direct link to The League of Shadows .

    Alrighty then Alberto it´s just fine to me, it would be nice to see Tom Wilkinson too. My main concern right now is related to this Juno Temple character; does this mean we can rule Talia out of the picture? Hmmm...

    I knew that JGL was gonna be the MOB element of the The Dark Knight Rises. It was either gonna be between Alberto Falcone or Black Mask that he ended up playing and now we know (sort of) and he is gonna hit it outta the park as Alberto, he is a dead ringer for Alberto, this a another stroke of genius in casting. The Dark Knight Rises EPIC :-)!!!

    I sad it! With all the buzz around Nolan taking it back to batman begins, I thought of Alberto Falcone and Talia AlGul. They both could have the same ˝problem˝ with the Bat, considering that he put away their father´s. I was cheering for Natalie Portman to play Talia, becouse he is just beautiful. But that will not happen so if Marion Cotillard takes the role it will be perfectly fine. As for JGL, I think he will be good in the role of Falcone JR.

    This is great news. Of all the possibilities thrown out, this is by far the best one. I think casting him as Deadshot or Black Mask would've strained credibility. Not to mention that it would've been redundant to have either character in the story when you already have Bane. And I can't believe anyone ever thought he might be cast as The Joker or Robin. The former would've been disrespectful to Heath Ledger and the latter would've turned the series into a joke. You'd think the Schumacher films would've illustrated why the fans don't want Robin in any Batman movie. It's not a matter of how you write him or who you cast to play him. The idea of Batman wanting a sidekick is just ridiculous. I much prefer the idea of him getting help from people like Gordon or Lucius than to actually have his own junior Batman.

    Now all we need is Marion Cotillard as Talia Al Ghul.

      I completely agreed with you until you said that Cotillard should be Talia.
      'Cause that'll be stupid. You have Batman who's on the run, Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Bane, Alberto ánd Talia/League of Shadows?
      No.
      That'd be to much. Nolan said himself, it's Bruce Wayne's story.
      And if JGL is indeed playing Alberto than he's the one that connects it to Batman Begins.

        Didn't people say Joker, Two Face, Scarecrow and Maroni in one movie was too much?

        I think this all makes perfect sense. It's bringing the trilogy full circle. And it is STILL Bruce Wayne's story. We already know he's likely in a very dark place right now. He's already weighed down by the burden that his presence has inspired super criminals like Joker. He already blames himself for Rachel. Now Alberto will probably blame him for what happened to his father. Talia will certainly blame him for what happened to her father. If they go with a pseudo year one Catwoman then we know Catwoman was directly inspired by Batman. All his past mistakes, and new ones, are coming back to haunt him. He's likely going to find himself feeling responsible for creating all these "monsters", questioning if he should continue and this is exactly what The Dark Knight has to "Rise" above.

        What a poor connection to Begins if you ask me. The League of Shadows has everything to do with Bruce Wayne, he was trained by them for God´s sake, and you do know how Talia relates to Bruce Wayne don´t you? Then even have a son together!

        About the film´s being overcrowded let´s see:

        Batman + Gordon + Catwoman vs Bane + Aberto Falcone + Talia

        Looks good to me.

        Actually it makes perfect sense. Bruce's story is about him waging a one-man war on crime and then discovering that there are consequences to his actions. In fact, I would say that's a running theme throughout the whole series. In Batman Begins, he asks his parents if they can leave the theater and it leads to them getting killed. Later, he saves Ducard only to have it come back to haunt him. In TDK, he retrieves Lau from Hong Kong only to have the mob hire the The Joker who goes on to kill Rachel. So part of Bruce's story is learning some very painful lessons. Having Talia exact revenge on Bruce fits into that perfectly. When Bruce let Ra's die, did he think that would solve everything? In the real world, everything you do has the potential for blowback. Another current running through the series is how children are often trying to continue their fathers' legacies. Bruce, in his own way, thinks he's helping Gotham like his father would've wanted. So to have Alberto Falcone and Talia in this movie adds to that theme. They're both continuing what their fathers did. But it's still Bruce's story. Talia and Alberto are simply the catalysts. I expect Nolan to keep the focus on Bruce and show how he deals with the fallout from his previous actions. As for the timing, it makes perfect sense for Talia to target Bruce now. He's on the run and wanted for murder. What better time to strike your enemy when they're already vulnerable.

    I'd much rather see Falcone's son than Ra's al Ghul's daughter or LoS. At least we know that Carmine Falcone is still out there--despite being fairly brain damaged from Scarecrow. Ra's al Ghul is dead, and to continue his story would be like beating a dead dog. We know Gotham's mob is still out there as confirmed in BB and TDK; but Gordon didn't mention to Batman that LoS is still out there, so bringing Alberto Falcone in makes more sense than Talia. Then again, they could both be in it...

      If we have a go with the LoS plotline it will envolve Ra´s Al Ghul´s legacy not Ra´s himself! God, is that so hard to understand? Continuity and full circle ring any bells to you? Falcone family does not have the power to stand against Batman on their own, they are a sub-plot, maybe connecting them with LoS since Carmine was part of their last operation with the fear gas, but I expect much more epicness out of this last installment, Nolan must turn this one into something more than a mob masterpiece, wich was what TDK was in it´s core...

        I'm in my late 20s. How old are you? Judging from how emotional you've gotten about my harmless post shows that you either must be younger and have a lot to learn - or - you're older and are simply a pathetic fanboy. Either way, you have absolutely no grasp on basic storytelling fundamentals.

        Judging from the fact that LoS wasn't referenced in the slightest in TDK makes it impossible to go full circle. Full circle means that there are recurring motifs and/or themes within the series—something The Falcone Family has, but the LoS doesn't. For example, including the mob involves history that occurred in BB and TDK; while LoS only has BB, and leaves TDK abandoned. Simply put, LoS would be a plot-device-after-the-fact and cannot successful make a full circle because a second irrelevant arc has been created for the sake of unnecessary continuity. Now, I know that bringing Two-Face back from the dead or involving the fallen LoS sounds like "epicness" to you and other simpletons, but I can assure you you're setting yourself up for disappointment because your "epicness" is nothing but backtracking.

Now, about being emotional, I tend to get like that when I see no reasonable argument for your opinions about this matter,not only this post in particular but the majority of your posts about this discussion. Had you pay any attention to what I´ve wrote and you would have seen that I´m not favouring Talia over Falcone, because to me they should both be in the plot.

          If you scroll up and you will find that FanOf Nolan already syntethized it very eloquently why is it a full circle with LoS in it.

          Oh by the way, if The League of Shadows end´s up in The Dark Knight Rises don´t forget to call Christopher Nolan and say "- You sir have no grasp on basic storytelling fundamentals".

I have confidence in Christopher Nolan, and if he does use Talia and/or LoS I'm sure it'll be way better and meaningful than these suggestions.     Interesting, just read the Long Halloween last night to look for some insight into this. In regard to this film being Wayne's story, I think we might see come corporate stuff going on where Wayne enterprises is implied in part to some sort of corrupt thing going on in relation to the mob.

    With Alberto in this and if he is the Holiday Killer, then the timeline of this movie would be longer than a year, which could also mean the Bane gets to beat the living crap out of Batman and there will be enough time for him to heal.

    But who knows, I don't know anything about it so...

    Don't hate me, but I'm actually glad the Falcone rumour was false. I just think that JGL is such a talented actor and can really do a lot more than a simple crime boss. So my fingers are once again crossed for the fantastic role I'm sure he's received.

      I'd say Alberto Falcone is a little bit more than just a crime boss. As the the Holiday Killer, he was straight messin' with Batman psychologically. Just my two cents, though.
