15 Years of Coverage (2010-2025)
MTV sat down with Gary Oldman and he spilled a few more details about The Dark Knight Rises. Oldman echoed what he said to Collider, but added that The Dark Knight Rises brings the story back to Batman Begins. Looks like that leaked plot summary might be legit after all. Check out the full video interview.

i know this has nothing to do with this but, i loved a little reference that is made in TDK to BB. In BB when bruce is training with Ra's in the final test where he has to find him between the ninjas, Ra's is making the powder for Bruce and says "criminals aren't complicated" then in TDK when bruce is underground with alfred looking at the hostile video of the joker, he says to alfred, "criminals aren't complicated, alfred." i know its random but i just love it! it shows how bruce wayne learned from Ra's something other than fighting.
I love this part too. I especially loved when they referenced the deaths in Bruce's life. When he was a child, Alfred comes into the room and says he was thinking about making supper, then as he turns away to leave, Bruce calls him back in. The same thing happens in TDK when Rachel dies. Alfred comes in, suggests making breakfast, turns to leave and then Bruce stops him. Great screenwriting!
wow! that is true i never noticed but it was the exact reaction from bruce! wau! never noticed that too!
I noticed both of these references as well and loved that Nolan didn't just forget his previous Batman film. That's what happens to a lot of writers. They write a screenplay and then when it's time to write the sequel (or prequel), they completely forget what they wrote before. Yeah, George Lucas. I'm talking about you.
Absolutely! The use of meals as a metaphor is brilliant!
Cross my fingers. I can't say anything for sure. They go back to Begins in terms of elements and philosophy, that's for sure. That doesn't necessarily mean LoS. It means that Bane has a sense of honour , like Bruce and Ra's, unlike Joker. He will be a criminal addicted to power and intimidation. Joker was an anarchist. Bane will be a fascist.
Glad to see the story coming back to Begins and with Bruce's journey as I feel it should do. The LOS is a big part of Begins and a return would make sense, I'm not really sure why people are so reluctant about it.
I know! How could you have a worldwide organization that has been there for centuries in BB, and all of a sudden they don't exist anymore? Just cause Batman killed their leader? For the sake of completing the story, the return of the LOS is more than welcome.
On top of that, that would give a reason as for the presence of Bane. If anything, I hope to see vilains that have a much more complicated plot than simply creating chaos (even though, ironically, the Joker's plot was quite complicated).
The reason some people are disappointed by the return of the LOS is because it feels like Nolan's recycling ideas. In a way, I can kind of see their point. It reminds me of the disappointment many of us felt when the plot for Return of the Jedi leaked. Another Death Star? Really Lucas, couldn't you have come with something more original? But in this case, the return of the LOS makes perfect sense and adds nice continuity to the series. Bruce's actions have consequences, something he learned very painfully in The Dark Knight. And he of all people can understand the anger one feels from having their parents killed. Too often, movies based on comic book characters have villains with silly motivations. Nolan is obviously more interested in delving into the psychology of why people do what they do. He gave us a plausible set of reasons for why a man would want to wage a one-man war on crime and do it dressed up as a bat. If the villain of The Dark Knight Rises wanted to destroy Gotham just because the plot demanded it, that would be boring and the villain would essentially come off like a James Bond villain. But based on the spoilers we've been hearing, it sounds like there's a much more personal motive at work. Wanting to exact revenge isn't a difficult concept to grasp and in a series that goes out of its way to make its characters believable, the idea of Talia wanting revenge and even hiring Bane to help with that makes perfect sense. Bruce realized that he needed Lucius Fox's help if he was ever going to make the Batman concept work. Probably Talia realizes the same thing, which is why she reaches out to Bane.
My thoughts exacly. If the plot revolves around this concepts it will top The Dark Knight in cinematic epicness. Bring it Mr. Nolan!
I can't wait, I wonder what it is he learns about him self?
I have a feeling that Talia finds Bane in a prison much like Ras (Henri Ducard) did with Bruce Wayne in BB, thus tying in a similar "feel" as in the first film. Bane will become the LEADER of the LoS in this regard shown in a backstory on the rebuilding of the LoS after word of Ras going down in Gotham City to the man known as The Batman. Not that he is just "muscle" rather, he becomes the leader much like Bruce could have been with the LoS, obsessed with finding and defeating Batman. It is possible that Talia doesn't really know that Bruce is Batman, thus they head to Gotham to destroy Bats and finish what her father intended on doing. I think the Prey storyline comes in to play because many parties are wanting to know who Batman really is, the LoS could possibly infiltrate the squad assigned to find Bats, and they go from there. I am still expeting a small role with Hugo Strange being introduced (Last minute into from Nolan of course): as a possible venom creator to create Bane in jail and collaborating with the LoS to hunt the Batman, thus the TV scene in Prey where the Mayor appoints Gordon to create an elite task force to find Bats, and appointing Strange to help in finding Bats too. Tie in certain mob forms (JGL) that Batman continues to foil, a bit of the Knightfall storyline to where Bane is the one who finds out who Batman really is and leaves him extremely injured....Batman "Rises" from the injury to save Gotham and we have the making of a sweet flick.
hmm, sounds to me like he's saying TDKR is about wayne's journey, not about the LoS.
I LOVE GARY OLDMAN AS JIM GORDON VERY GOOD
'And then we get married.'
That made me snicker. But honestly, I do hope the leaked script is nothing like the official script. Please be a fake.
LOS should stay in BB, I don't like seeing it return...... I would love to see that Bane is a villain in itself just like Joker, why does he have to be the leader of the LOS or even the muscle/love-interest of Talia? I'd like to see new things, not sort of a repeat of the LOS......
If he wants to bring it back to BB, why not connect Selena with Falcone? In the comics she's his daughter. Wich would be interesting to see if JGL is playing Alberto.
Oh, and the batboat :D
Hope that Catwoman and Bats vs League of Shadows spoiler is fake. I hope that bringing the story to Batman Begins means back to Bruce...please, I don't wanna see another stupid intent of destroying Gotham, as they did with Rome before it blah blah blah
I hope Catwoman has a connection with the Falcones, like in Long Halloween/Dark Victory/When in Rome. I would like Alberto Falcone to be in it too.
The Talia Al Ghul and League of Shadows + Bane is a bit too much...but is true that in the arc Legacy, Bane became the new Ubu for a while (Ubu is the most important warrior of Ra's) and was chosen to spouse Talia, though Talia is in love with the Bat. The plan in Legacy was to realease the virus of Contagion arc to the world or something like that.
I hope some of the Venom arc cuts in...when Bruce becomes addiccted to the drug grows a beard and its all like depressed and stuff.
I think to juggle all of this characters, and still give a beautiful closure to Bruce's story, the script will have to be awesome or it will be a total fail.
I had a theory for a couple weeks now that TDKR will not be about 'batmans redemption' or 'rising from near death injuries'. I based my cnjectures on the title (it's not 'Batman rises' but 'TDK rises', which is not the same imo.) I believe that in 'Begins', when he imagines what Batman will be like, he imagines one thing. Enter the Joker and his memorable 'you have changed things, forever'. Now Bruce realizes that his vision for Batman is not going to happen, because he didn't really think ALL scenarios through (specially escalation). So, this movie willl be about Bats coming to terms with what he really IS, and not what he wanted to be when he started out in 'Begins'. This could be another interpretation of what GO meant by 'tie it into BB'... just a (random) thought
I love the bit about Bruce learning something about himself. Batman Begins made sure to keep the focus on Bruce. The Dark Knight kind of got away from that. So Oldman's comment makes it sound like the focus has gone back to Bruce. I know some people are concerned that with all these villains, Batman won't have a big role. But as we saw with Batman Begins, Nolan knows how to have a story with several villains without losing focus on who the main character is. It'll be interesting to see just what Bruce learns about himself. In the last film, he learned the price that comes with being Batman, not just to himself, but to the people he cares about. He also learned that there's a certain futility in what he's trying to accomplish. What's left for him?
A return of LoS wouldn't make much sense because there has to be meaning in its abscence in TDK. Nolan wasn't sure if he'd be back for a third film, so if his LoS ideas were that great I'm sure he would've used them in TDK; which he didn't, so I don't have much confidence in LoS. Fortunately, I don't think that's what Gary Oldman meant when saying that Rises is going to bring the story back to Begins. I think he means that Batman's, Alfred's, Gordon's, Fox's story arcs will finally be completed. The arc of each film has been complete, so bringing LoS back would be redundant.
I have a logical argument for the absence of LoS from TDK: With Ras Al Gul dead they were restructuring themselves, finding a new leader and which plan to go with. Seems plausible enough to me...
Well, if Nolan wasn't sure he wanted to be back for a third film (as stated in my post) then that argument doesn't make sense. Point being, LoS will be a plot-decive after the fact, meaning it was something Nolan pulled out of a hat.
Nolan didn´t even expect to do a second Batman film for that matter! And we all know that the original plot of this third film would envolve Joker´s character once again so how repetitive can Nolan be huh? It would be okay to include the Joker in two films but to bring back the vilanous force from the first one shows lack of imagination? To me in this trilogy The League of Shadows ends up being much more important than The Joker, they have a connection with Bruce Wayne/Batman, he was one of them for a period of time, is more than acceptable that they come back to settle the score with the guy responsible for the death of their leader and the guy who ruined their plans don´t you agree? And when you add Bane to the context it becomes even more righteous, and a bit more when it´s Talia who is orchestrating the whole thing, I would love to see her presented as someone else and then a twist scene in the third act where she reveal who she really is to Bruce Wayne. To me these ingredients are perfect for the central plotline, if it turns out closer to this I would be happy enough...
