James Gunn has been confirmed to both write and direct the next film in the Superman Super-Family series.

Following the investor's letter on Thursday morning, which confirmed Gunn is writing the next Super-Family film, it has now been confirmed he will also direct it.

During the Warner Bros. Discovery earnings call on Thursday, CEO David Zaslav confirmed that Gunn will be directing "the next installment in the Super-Family." What exactly that film is remains to be seen.

Gunn had previously confirmed that he was writing a film that heavily features David Corenswet's Superman, but that he would not classify it as a sequel.

With Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow due to hit theaters on June 26, 2026, one can easiy imagine that the film will be some form of team-up between the cousins. What enemy the two of them will face remains to be seen.

No timeline for the new film's release has been announced as of yet.

    it's going to be another Krypto film/short, isn't it?!

      I kinda think there should be a sense of "okay, but now we need to make some money" following up Superman. It's not like Supergirl or Clayface are gonna do that.

        I have no idea what the general interest is for a Supergirl movie (I've read the 'Woman of Tomorrow' comic, and I'm not particularly excited for an adaptation of it)

        But a Batman-less Clayface movie?! That's going to bomb just as much as those Sony Spider-Man-less villain movies (Venom really was an anomaly) even if it does end up being well made.

          I’d be curious as to the interest for a Supergirl movie, myself. I feel like that’s something they should hold off on, and maybe try doing a Wonder Woman movie first. They need to build up trust with the fans first, before they start concerning themselves with Supergirl, Swamp Thing, and the like.

          But a Batman-less Clayface movie?! That's going to bomb just as much as those Sony Spider-Man-less villain movies (Venom really was a an anomaly) even if it does end up being well made

          I agree. They should really keep the budget low for that one (like Five Nights at Freddy’s low), and hope that it’s really, really good.

          It's more than a little ironic that one of the first things Gunn did when he was hired was "brow-beating" former DC executives for not "minding the mint". And now he's got DC Studios just crapping out someone's financially-doomed passion projects for the next several years in what might be the worst time for the superhero genre since the late 90s, when you consider that almost nothing is turning a profit.

          I see nothing on the current DCU slate worth being excited about.

            I agree. Supergirl could very well be a good, enjoyable movie but may do Shazam 2 numbers. I’m really surprised that’s the next movie coming out.

          As a horror fan more than a superhero fan Clayface is one of the only DC projects in comics or film that I feel any excitement for. Anticipation for this film is high on horror forums.

          You're looking at this as a superhero fan. Try considering it from the point of view of horror fans or Mike Flanagan fans.

            yeah, that's a problem for me, since I'm NOT a horror fan (so that aspect of the movie is even less appealing to me)

            Body horror is off-putting to me, and though I would watch the occasional psychological horror movie, it's not really my bread and butter to say the least.

            What's interesting about Clayface to me is how Batman would take down someone like that (either physically or intellectually) and since that doesn't seem like it's really what the movie about, I can't say I'm super excited about watching it (who knows, I might like it, but the concept is not really getting me)

            regardless of my tastes, horror is relatively a niche genre, and won't put THAT many buts in seats. (at least not as many as DC studios are probably hoping for)

    I don’t think we’ll ever see solo Superman film as long as Gunn is in charge. Team ups up the Wazoo.

      If you are doing a big character that is expected to make a lot of money, its probably harder to do a purely solo film in today's climate. A few characters like Batman or Spiderman could pull it off, but otherwise its gotten much harder I think. Though its also potentially a good way to introduce the audience to and elevate lesser known JL characters who aren't nearly as marketable as the trinity.

          It's about timing. There was a moment when the Batman movie franchise was stained, too. Sometimes you have to rebuild a brand.

          Cavill had a lot of fans, though. Part of rebuilding that brand will be in convincing audiences to move on and embrace a new take on the property, which is easier said than done. They probably didn't set themselves up great for it, considering how everything went down. It feels a little bit like TASM replacing Raimi's Spider-Man.

    Jeff Sneider said that Robin will be introduced in The Batman Part II. Any more info on it here?

      Saw that as well. Sneider is hardly the most reliable scooper, but he does get some big stuff right sometimes. Gunn commented on it earlier today although it was kind of a non denial answer, which he does sometimes when something is at least partially true. So who can say for sure right now

        Gunn's "non-denial answer" in this case is that no one (there's something like 6 people) who knows anything about the movie would put that information out there, so don't believe anything you read about it. No one knows anything, scoopers don't know anything. It wasn't him saying Robin isn't in it, it was him saying no one knows that.

        Basically, if it turns out to be true, it's just speculation that was correct. You kinda have a 50/50 shot, though. Robin's either in it or he isn't. Personally, I'd prefer the character not be in it, but I don't feel that strongly either way.

          Its hard to say with Gunn based on what I have seen. I remember some mixed messaging about Ultra Man which turned out to be true. He has a way of wording things that can be, in hindsight at least, end up being seen as both somewhat true but not entirely not true either. The thing is, with batman being officially in pre production now, its not impossible that more people might know general details about the story at least, even if they haven't seen the full script tbh.

          If they want to have two batman franchises, then I agree Reeves doing Robin might not be for the best since that would seemingly be a significant way of distinguishing the two.

            Reeves has stated that he's a fan of A Death in the Family, the story of Jason Todd's murder, so if there is Robin then it might not be the Robin people automatically assume. Circus kid and tween wish fulfillment fantasy Dick Grayson does not seem plausible in Reeves' world but doomed street kid Jason does.

            However, there's a planned mixed media elseworld film about Dick and Jason that Reeves is co-producing. This has been a source of confusion for fans and rumor mills.

            There's probably truth to that, but how much more of a "problem" is this scenario than they already have, anyway? They're already gonna be selling audiences on two different versions of Batman at the same time. I'm not sure "well, this one has THIS supporting character and the other one has THAT supporting character" would really mitigate anything, anyway.
