According to Constantine star Keanu Reeves, things are definitely moving ahead on the long-discussed sequel.

It seems that director Francis Lawrence isn't the only one willing to speak about the state of Constantine 2. Speaking with Inverse, the Reeves stated, "We've been trying to make this film for over a decade, and we just recently put a story together and pitched it to DC Studios and they said, ‘Okay,’" said Reeves. "So, we're going to try and write a script."

He went on to add that any potential story would be set in "the same world" as the original film. He concluded by saying, "We're not going off that. John Constantine's going to be tortured even more."

Announced in 2022, there have been some fears over whether or not the long-awaited Constantine 2 would still happen. Not long after it was announced, a new DC Universe slate was announced, and there was no mention of the film. It was then clarified shortly after that the film was still in the works, but then another round of silence happened. This was followed by one more scare when it was stated the sequel was being 're-evaluated.'

Things appear to be getting back on track, and the last update came from Lawrence, who said, "I will say we are closer than ever to being able to do a sequel, which is a great thing. And Akiva, Keanu and I are super, super excited about it."

While not confirmed as of yet, this will more than likely fall into the Elseworlds branding along with The Batman: Part II and Joker: Folie à Deux.

Akiva Goldsman has been tapped to pen the screenplay and produce through his Weed Road Pictures. Bad Robot’s J.J. Abrams and Hannah Minghella are also set as producers. Lorenzo DiBonaventura and Erwin Stoff are set as executive producers. Francis Lawrence will return to direct.

Warner Bros Pictures Group co-chairs Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy are said to have spearheaded the deal.
