UPDATE: The Hollywood Reporter is saying that Wadlow is not in the mix, and never has been. Watkins has not yet met with DC Studios brass, but will be doing so in the near future. Original story follows.

The Clayface movie is closing in on a choice for a director as casting is rumored to have already begun on the project.

According to a report from Deadline, two directors have emerged as the frontrunners to helm the untitled Clayface movie: Jeff Wadlow (Truth or Dare) and Jeff Waldow (Speak No Evil). Whomever wins the placement will be ready to go fairly soon as the script from Mike Flanaganis said to be done and casting is rumored to already be underway.

The film is said to be leaning toward a horror-thriller-tragedy vibe with Clayface expected to be seen more as a tragic character rather than a villain.

Rumors of this project date back to 2023, but it seems things are finally coming together. Flannagan will be writing the script. Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris will be producers via their 6th & Idaho Productions company.

Also, relating to the report from 2023, sources have repeatedly made it clear that the pitch is unrelated to The Batman: Part II. With Reeves serving as a producer, that will raise questions, but he was also involved with the Batman: Caped Crusader series, which was unrelated to his films.

Flanagan, who directed the Stephen King adaptation Doctor Sleep, has not been quiet about his passion for Clayface. He stated in 2021 that he was "really keen to do a standalone Clayface movie as a horror/thriller/tragedy."

While Clayface has appeared in animated form and video games many times over, he has never jumped to a live-action theatrical film. We'll have to wait and see if anything comes of these talks, but the character may finally be heading toward his time in the spotlight.

The untitled Clayface movie is scheduled to hit theaters on Sept. 11, 2026.
