Xolo Maridueña has offered a brief update on the Blue Beetle animated series and his hopes it will be released in 2026.
Maridueña spoke with The Direct at the Saturn Awards – where he won Best Young Performer in a Television Series for his role in Cobra Kai – about the current state of Blue Beetle. "We're hitting hard this animated project, hoping to get this settled out this year to show everyone next year," said Maridueña.
As to whether he has spoken with DC Studios co-chair James Gunn about a return to live-action, the actor said, "Look, he's got his hands in his kitchen. I don't want to walk in while the chef is doing his thing. But I can say that once they're finished with this three-course meal, I'm ready. And look, I have no reason to believe that he's lying. Like, whatever, we're adults, say whatever you want to say!" He went on to add, "I'm just happy to have done this first one and I'll continue to spread the word about that while we get the second one drafted up."
The Blue Beetle movie hit theaters on Aug. 18, 2023, and was generally well-received, but failed to make a large impact on the box office. DC Studios co-chair James Gunn has expressed a desire to see Xolo Maridueña continue in the role of Jaime Reyes, but how that would be accomplished has not been shared up until now. Should he sign on to the animated series, we would have our answer.
No word as of yet on a firm production timeline for the animated series.
