James Gunn discusses the big cameo of Creature Commandos episode 6 and how it changed from its first iteration.

If you have not watched the episode as of yet, consider everything beyond this point as a spoiler.

Yes, Creature Commandos episode 6 gives us the first true glimpse of Batman for the DC Universe. Speaking with Rotten Tomatoes, Gunn said of the cameo, "When they first gave it to me, we saw a lot more Batman and I was saying 'I am not ready to commit to that,' 'I'm not ready to commit to that,' 'I'm not ready to commit to that.' So I just like more silhouette, more silhouette, more silhouette.

He went on to add, "And I think it's it's a it's a great way to show that Batman does exist he already exists in this universe just like when we come to the
Superman movie we see Superman already exists. He's already known by the people in Metropolis."

"That's just a way to introduce that Batman is a part of this universe. He's an important part of this universe, and he has an impact on it, including defeating such pretty dangerous scary people like Phosphorus," Gunn added.

When we will first see this iteration of Batman in live-action remains to be seen, but for now, we know he is already an active part of the world.

The first six episodes of Creature Commandos are available now on Max, and the series has been renewed for a second season.

I don't really like that the first glimpse of this new Batman is just a silhouette in a cartoon series

BTW, with all the criticism the previous Batman got because he didn't have an origin movie previously (or the leaguers before JL), what now that they aren't making any origin movie for any of the upcoming heroes, like the ones in the upcoming Superman movie?

Well, as for the silhouette; think of it as a tease of a Batman they will let the Batman Team flesh out later. But, considering so many shows like Gotham, Smallville, Gotham Knights, Titans, Pennyworth and many Arrowverse series avoided Batman, including The Penguin with an actual Batman they were afraid to reference, I'd say we're lucky that they not only acknowledge his influence, but show him active in some capacity. If he were not there, the opposite complaint would be true.

In reference to the topic of origins; Batman does not need another origin story. We all know how it happened, and it is a waste of time to build an entire film around that day yet another time. The DCU focuses on story driven films, so if the most interesting story is a year six Batman trying to stop Red Hood from killing Black Mask, then yes, we will see that. If I want to make a Batman R.I.P first, then I should be able to tell that story too. We don't need five pointless films to set up the stories they want to tell. Especially if the only thing those films do is provide exposition and not further the story.

well, that's the point: I'm not against that. In fact I loved the way the DCEU was managing that. I mean, there was Superman origin with MoS, but then his appearance was the catalyst for Batman to appear, we didn't need another full-fledged origin for him (less so after having Batman Begins doing it excellently). And then his actions were the catalyst for Wonder Woman and her telling her story; and then Superman's death was the catalyst for Suicide Squad and the appearance of Steppenwolf which prompted the rest of the leaguers to appear. There was an organic way to all that that I liked better than the MCU approach.

What I meant with my comment is, why aren't people critisizing that now after all the vitriol spilled for that reason (among others)?

Well, I was never one to criticize that. Nor was I criticizing you.

James Gunn is the kind of filmmaker that wouldn't get why that undermines the appeal of something. To me, it's kinda like how Star Wars is all TV now. It doesn't seem like a cinematic thing anymore. To have the first reveal of your Batman being in a streaming site cartoon is the epitome of 'slumming it'.

And, unfortunately, origin films seem to have fallen out of favor, even though the best superhero origin films are some of the best movies in the genre, outright. If there's a character who has had a successful origin film previously, they're gonna stay away from anything to do with that these days. That's one of the issues with reboots. The filmmakers find themselves working around what's been done before. I don't care what they say about it, there's no way it's not a compromise. If it's not the version that would exist if it was the first one to ever be made, then it's a compromise.

can't say you are wrong there mate, with your Star Wars analogy. Star Wars is losing some of its charm because now it's not as eventful as is used to be. Think about the hype when a new movie was announced after years of the previous one(s). Now there's always sth new, it's not so special now, although it has still its good moments, like Andor/Rogue One, or my beloved Rebels.

And yeah, Superman The Movie/MoS, Batman Begins, Iron Man, Raimi's Spiderman, etc. Origin movies can amd must be great to honor their characters

the whole point with the silhouette thing is that they are not committing to any real direction with Batman beyond the fact that he exists and active in Gotham. (same as with their new version of Superman)

whether that idea is enough to draw audiences in to see the DCU movies is another issue.

personally I'm currently too invested in Reeve's Batman universe to start getting invested in a completely separate version of Batman
The fact that Dr Phosphorus and Clayface both appeared in the Creature Commandos show did very little to peak my interest in that part of the franchise

Pattinson's Batman will be most likelly folded into the DCU,.

Regardless, doesn’t this cameo commit to a huge bulky Batman aesthetic,, short ears, and a pouch-type utility belt over a streamlined Keaton-Bale version?

I think a lot of the cartoon characters on the show have over developed and exaggerated physiques. When they show up in live action, there will be resemblances obviously, but not an exact look. So while Bruce will definitely be bulkier than Pattinson, I doubt he will look as bulky as the silhouette. It’s also possible that the image was just in the perspective of Dr. Phosphorus who maybe imagines him larger based on his own fear and distorted recollection. Batman tends to change his costume in comics, so it’s quite possible that will change as well in Gunn’s universe.

Not necessarily. Creature Commandos was in development before the DCU reboot and the animators probably used Affleck's Batman, or a generic Batman, as template. Gunn said that the original cut had even more details, but he was not ready to commit to any of that, so he asked the animation team to cut it down to a silhouette only as much as possible. It is clear that Gunn doesn't seem even the silhoiette as being set in stone,
