Andy Muschietti says Brave and the Bold is delayed (UPDATED)

UPDATE: DC Studios co-chair James Gunn says the film is not delayed.

According to a new interview with Andy Muschietti, it will be a bit before we see Batman's first film in the DC Universe.

Speaking with the California Secreta podcast – and translated by Collider – Muschietti said of the upcoming project, “I’m now writing a science fiction movie that I would like to do. Batman is a project that’s been postponed a bit. So there could be another film before it, possibly that one.”

While no release date had been shared as of yet for The Brave and the Bold, an entire film going before it means we are more than likely a few years out from it seeing release.

Muschietti was announced as the director of The Brave and the Bold in July 2023, and since that time, news has been nearly non-existent on its status. DC Studios co-chairs James Gunn and Peter Safran told Variety at that time, “We saw The Flash; even before taking the reins at DC Studios, and knew we were in the hands of not only a visionary director but a massive DC fan. It’s a magnificent film – funny, emotional, thrilling – and Andy’s affinity and passion for these characters and this world just resonates through every frame. So, when it came time to find a director for The Brave and the Bold, there was really only one choice. Luckily, Andy said yes. Barbara signed on to produce with us and we were on our way. They’re an extraordinary team, and we couldn’t have better or more inspiring partners as we embark on this thrilling new adventure in the DCU.”

This film is set to mark Robin's first theatrical appearance since Chris O’Donnell played him in 1997's Batman & Robin. Multiple versions most recently appeared in the live-action Titans series.

No release date for The Brave and the Bold has been announced as of yet.

Oh my god.

Okay, I don't really care about The Brave and the Bold. But still. Why are Batman projects getting stalled this way? He's DC's most popular hero. Superman is a distant second, and the Joker is probably more popular than Superman. The Clayface and Bane/Deathstroke movies are likely to get to theaters before another Batman film. What the hell, WB?

I think one part of it in this case might be that they're moving on from Andy Muschietti. I thought it at the time, but the announcement that he was directing this movie seemed like they were trying to build hype for and protect The Flash. With that one being the reason Muschietti got the job, and then flopping the way it did, how do you willingly carry that baggage over?

One new James Gunn policy is "filming does not begin until the script is locked down tight" so maybe this is a good thing?
So many disappointing movies out there, and then we learn afterwards they were rushed into production while the screenplay was still being debated by the writers and director.
But who knows?

  I don't disagree that that idea is a good thing, my problem is...don't announce a dozen different projects before you have any scripts ready? They're doing the same thing they did before, announcing a ton, then delaying and inevitably going to end up dropping some. Its frustrating and counterproductive. Like sure it gets people hyped in the moment, but in the long run it does more damage. It gives them less to hype up going forward, and instills even more ill will from the fans when they DO start pushing back/cancelling previously announced projects.
  It seems so simple, just keep your mouths shut, and only talk about things that are ACTUALLY being made, and currently have at least a decent 1st draft script 🤷

    I completely agree. They'd have much better luck just focusing on Superman, and making sure that succeeds, then moving on to the next project. Nothing is ever guaranteed to be a success, not even Superman. So why not wait for that to pan out, otherwise there may not be a DCU for them to expand on?

I doubt Andy Muschietti winds up directing this movie. Audiences didn't like The Flash. I'm not saying he doesn't deserve a second chance, but I just don't see the commercial appeal in selling to audiences that the director of "The Flop" is the new Batman director.

Agreed. My gut says he doesn't direct it either. Whether they go with Brave and the Bold or go in a different direction, I just don't see him as the right choice at all. After Superman will come a revising for if DC is going in the right direction and how they can broaden their scope I think. You can have all the ideas in the world, but sometimes it takes reflection to know where best to go. And if DC wants to thrive and choose their steps better than they have in the past, it'll be in their best interest to make sure they are going the right way with their leadership & film choices.

That Ben Affleck grey and blue suit was the stuff of nightmares in The Flash.
So happy this movie is cancelled. Flash had so many issues from cinematography, editing, visual effects, and writing.
