Clayface movie officially announced for 2026 release

It's official: The Clayface movie is a go with a release date of Sept. 11, 2026 with Mike Flannagan serving as writer.

After rumors dating back to 2023, the Clayface movie has been officially announced and will be hitting theaters in 2026. No director or actor has been named to the project as of yet, but Flannagan will be writing the script. Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris will be producers via their 6th & Idaho Productions company.

At the time of the original rumors, sources said that the version of the character pitched for the story would not necessarily be a villain.

Also, relating to the report from 2023, sources made clear that the pitch was unrelated to The Batman: Part II. With Reeves serving as a producer, that will raise questions, but he was also involved with the Batman: Caped Crusader series, which was unrelated to his films.

Flanagan, who directed the Stephen King adaptation Doctor Sleep, has not been quiet about his passion for Clayface. He stated in 2021 that he was "really keen to do a standalone Clayface movie as a horror/thriller/tragedy."

While Clayface has appeared in animated form and video games many times over, he has never jumped to a live-action theatrical film. We'll have to wait and see if anything comes of these talks, but the character may finally be heading toward his time in the spotlight.

Cry about it, haters. You'll get your cinematic cast of thousands end of world crossover CGI comic book universe for big kids, so learn to share and let the rest of us have our things, too.

This is the kind of project I want to see. I'd rather hear about creators taking risks and getting to make smaller projects they're really passionate about than just see a stream of films designed to set up a connected cinematic universe. As long as DC is ready to start implementing some quality control (and the talent lined up looks good), I'm down for it.

I agree. This, Sgt. Rock and Swamp Thing are far more interesting ideas than yet another boring Flash, Aquaman or Wonder Woman movie.

  Yeah, the Swamp Thing film is one of the projects I'm looking forward to hearing more about. I like that DC is taking chances on horror, dark fantasy, and more grounded like genres like gangsters and noir instead of just playing it safe with Avengers-type heroes.

Clayface should be in Reeves Elseworld or people will get confused. How many DC worlds people want? Dynamic Duo now in another world? Let combine them into one. So only DCU world and Batman Elseworld. What they thinking?

The entire point of Elseworld stories is that you do several of them so viewers can see how distinct and different they all are from each other, that's what makes them special and stand out.
For countless years audiences spent huge money on MCU movies and X-Men movies at the same time, all despite the fact that none of them take place in the same world. Viewers will be absolutely fine if Reeves Batman, The DCU, etc aren't connected. The literal only thing that matters is the actual quality of each project.

  Problem is cinemagoers want continuity. Want clayface appear next with Robert Pattison Batman. See low box office Kraven, Mobius. They didn't bother to invite spiderman as cameo. People thought no continuity. Why it so hard they can connected to each other since both upcoming films coming from Reeves production company?

    From what I've heard, the Kraven and Morbius films were terrible. That explains their poor box office better than not being part of a larger continuity, I'd say.
    There's tons of material that won't fit into this or that franchise. Elseworlds are a way to develop that material. I salute Matt Reeves for supporting Batman-adjacent films that don't mesh with his particular Batman series. It's not hurting anything for films like Flanagan's Clayface to exist in their own corners. I can't understand why some fans are so troubled by this idea.

    Clayface won’t be in the Matt Reeves Batman films. Reeves has labeled it the Batman Crime Saga and it’s only going to feature grounded, human, street-level characters like what was seen in The Penguin series
    The place for Clayface is in the main DC Universe alongside Superman, Green Lantern, Metamorpho and all the other supernatural characters.
    And a Clayface solo movie isn’t comparable to any of the Kraven, Madame Web flops since those were just lazy cash-grabs with average/bad writers and directors, while Gunn has already hired one of the most acclaimed writers in the industry and will do the same for the director.
    Plus the DCU Batman could appear in the Clayface movie and the same for Clayface appearing in the DCU Batman film, so it has none of the restrictions the bad Sony villain movies had.

Another one of trash "throw whateva you want film in the new wateva DC universe we have". Really Gunn? Instead of greenlighting the next roster of Wonder Woman, Aquaman, The Flash or Green Lantern film, we got this C-list unknown character? Another flop. Thanks. The haters are really pathetic.
