Joker: Folie à Deux drops 81% in its second weekend

Joker: Folie à Deux had a far tougher second weekend than many projected and fell 81% from its opening weekend.

As the second weekend of Joker: Folie à Deux draws to a close, the box office estimates have rolled in. Domestically the film took in $7.05 million over the three-day weekend. This brings its domestic total to $51.61M. It has now taken in $113.7 million in the foreign markets for a global total of $165.31 million.

For comparison, Joker took in $55 million domestically in its second weekend which brought its total to $192.72. The foreign total as of that weekend was $351 million, bringing its global total to $544 million.

Joker eventually went on to take in $335.45 million domestically and $728.12 million in the foreign markets for a global final total of $1.063 billion.

Its third weekend will see Smile 2 opening. A finish in the top five is about the best Joker: Folie à Deux can hope for at this point.

Joker: Folie à Deux is now in wide theatrical release.

I never expected this to perform like the first film but I'm sad to see a possible franchise implode this way. I liked the idea of a series of films based on the villains without Batman where the creators had more artistic license. Whether Todd Phillips kept on or handed off the baton there's more that could have been done.

  Being the top grossing film of the weekend means nothing when it opened to a $100 million less than the previous film and less than The Marvels and barely $60 mil more than Madame Web. It was abundantly clear by its under performance and downward adjusted expectations. Estimates for box office projections were literally dropping until the week of actual release.
  The point of my comment was to poke fun at the first article from this site claiming it "won" the box office. It clearly didn't. Red flags should have been up immediately.

    You're not correcting or shedding light on anything. We all know the film is a failure. Sean's first article about Joker "winning" (same word he always uses) its first weekend also discussed its poor performance compared to its predecessor. This article's title refers directly to its catastrophic drop in earnings.
    There's no attempt to pretend the film is a winner, but it factually won its first weekend.
    If five slow, clumsy people race, one of them can win. He might die after he crosses the finish line, but he's won.
