DC Studios is reportedly getting closer to finding its John Stewart for the upcoming Lanterns series.
Following the recent news of Kyle Chandler being cast as Hal Jordan, Deadline is reporting the race is tightening up to play John Stewart.
Stephen James (Beacon 23) and Aaron Pierre (Rebel Ridge) are reportedly the frontrunners for the role. Damson Idris (Snowfall) is also reportedly in the mix, but the other two are said to be the ones that are gaining the most momentum.
DC fans may also remember Pierre from his time as Dev-Em in the Krypton series. He will next be playing the title character in Disney's Mufasa: The Lion King.
James received a Golden Globe nomination for his role in Homecoming, and an Emmy nomination for #FreeRayshawn.
The new Lanterns series has been ordered by HBO and will focus on Hal Jordan and John Stewart.
One of the first projects announced for the new DC Universe, Lanterns is finally on the move at HBO. Working in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios, HBO has given an eight-episode, straight-to-series order for Lanterns.
Emmy-nominee Chris Mundy (HBO’s True Detective: Night Country, Ozark) will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Emmy-winner Damon Lindelof (HBO’s Watchmen and The Leftovers) and Eisner Award winner Tom King (Mister Miracle, Supergirl) will co-write the new series with Mundy. Lindelof and King will also serve as executive producers.
The official logline of the series says, “The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”
Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO and Max Content, said in a statement at the time of the announcement, “We are elated to be reuniting with both Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof as they partner with Tom for this fresh take on DC’s Green Lantern. As part of James and Peter’s vision for the DC Universe, this first new live-action series will mark an exciting new era.”
