According to a new report, Josh Brolin has chosen to pass on the role of Hal Jordan in the upcoming Lanterns series at HBO.

A recent report indicated that an offer had gone out to Josh Brolin for the role of Hal Jordan. Sources speaking with The Hollywood Reporter say the actor has now passed on the role.

Additionally, the report indicates that while Matthew McConaughey had been rumored as a backup for the role, the actor will not be taking on the part. It is unclear if he was ever offered the role, but sources are saying that will not be happening as of now.

The plan still calls for Jordan to be the older Lantern, to a younger, more rookie, version of John Stewart.

The new Lanterns series has been ordered by HBO and will focus on Hal Jordan and John Stewart.

One of the first projects announced for the new DC Universe, Lanterns is finally on the move at HBO. Working in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios, HBO has given an eight-episode, straight-to-series order for Lanterns.

Emmy-nominee Chris Mundy (HBO’s True Detective: Night Country, Ozark) will serve as showrunner and executive producer. Emmy-winner Damon Lindelof (HBO’s Watchmen and The Leftovers) and Eisner Award winner Tom King (Mister Miracle, Supergirl) will co-write the new series with Mundy. Lindelof and King will also serve as executive producers.

The official logline of the series says, "The series follows new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland."

Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO, HBO and Max Content, said in a statement at the time of the announcement, "We are elated to be reuniting with both Chris Mundy and Damon Lindelof as they partner with Tom for this fresh take on DC’s Green Lantern. As part of James and Peter’s vision for the DC Universe, this first new live-action series will mark an exciting new era."

James Gunn and Peter Safran, Co-Chairmen and Co-CEOs of DC Studios added, "We’re thrilled to bring this seminal DC title to HBO with Chris, Damon, and Tom at the helm. John Stewart and Hal Jordan are two of DC’s most compelling characters, and Lanterns brings them to life in an original detective story that is a foundational part of the unified DCU we’re launching next summer with Superman."

No word as of yet as to a possible premiere date for Lanterns.
