   watching the trailer, it's impossible to me to get over how they changed the tone and character personalities from the comics.
   By trying to make the show "fun" I feel like they kind of missed the point. (at most, the comics relied on dry humor to off balance the fact that our protagonists were ghosts of kids who died pretty young and didn't look like they were in their 20s like in the show)

   maybe some people will enjoy this, but it will always feel just off to me. (kind of like the Lucifer show, but even more off adaptation-wise)

      Lol I haven't read much of the sandman universe stuff since I was a kid. But even knowing how different lucifer was I absolutely loved that show 😂 and I'm looking forward to watching this one even though I keep forgetting about it

         That's my point, if you do have a frame of reference of how the original was like, it's much more difficult to enjoy an adaptation that's significantly different than the source material. (especially if there isn't one that is more faithful)

         in comparison, the Sandman show, despite changes being made (and I do have some criticisms for that show) is way more faithful to the original than the other shows I mentioned and was much easier to enjoy for me.

         BTW, I would recommend reading some of those early 'Lucifer' stories (they are way more interesting than that generic concept of a buddy cop/police procedural they forced on the show)

            Fair, I'm also the rare person that can really enjoy an adaptation for what it is without the need to compare it to the original. Almost none are really faithful to the source material. But that's kind of the point isn't it? If you want the original, you can always go back and enjoy it how it was meant to be enjoyed. I definitely see both points of view and enjoy a faithful adaptation as well, but don't have a problem enjoying someone else's adaptation of it. Unless it's just crap, there's definitely "adaptations" that suck through and through for quality, casting and writing issues lol

               I think most fans of something are willing to accept changea. But it really depends on what you're changing and how much. It's the difference between Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films and Amazon's Rings of Power.

               You personally loving the Rings of Power isn't the issue. It's perfectly possible that you just have really bad taste. But what you can't do is claim that Rings of Power is in line with anything that Tolkien wrote. I'm saying this as someone who had read everything that Tolkien wrote multiple times long before Jackson's movies ever came out.

               Amazon had a chance to actually expand on Middle Earth in a meaningful way. They had the license, they had the funds, they had a Tolkien expert (who they fired when he tried to tell them that what they were doing wasn't correct in terms of the lore). But it's clear that all they wanted was to use and bastardize a recognizable name (i.e. The Lord of The Rings) and a few recognizable characters (e.g. Galadriel, Elrond, Sauron, etc.) to draw in people who probably don't know enough about the source material and won't care that so much of Amazon's story lore, the timeframe, the presentations, and characterizations are completely wrong.

               If you put on a play of Romeo and Juliet, but Juliet and Romeo actually hate each other, you're no longer doing an adaptation. You've completely changed the story. That's the point people are making. You can only alter so much before it's no longer the thing you claim it is. Amazon's Rings of Power has no relation to Lord of the Rings save in name.

   I'm hoping business realities and audience sensibilities eventually cull about 95% of superhero/comic book adaptations, both on TV and in film. We need way less (movies have been all but ruined by the superhero genre), and most of the properties aren't really that suitable for other mediums. When it's back to being a special event instead of the dominant format for entertainment, it'll hopefully be interesting again.

      Needs to maintain variety imo. If DC is aiming for two movies a year(which isn't bad imo), they should continually try to get two very different kinds of projects going. 2026 could be a good example. Supergirl and then The Batman Part 2. 2019 was another great one. Shazam and then Joker. Different tones and genre styles, different budgets, different audiences even. Not everything has to be an "event" necessarily. The "event" movies should be the major characters like Batman and Superman, as well as the team ups.

         I'd rather all of it went away for a while and came back when they were trying to be real movies again, on the whole. Of the ones trying to be that now, none of it is particularly interesting. It's some combination of derivative and contrived, pretentious and aimless. Endless reboots, each time having to avoid the characteristics of the prior series, even the defining characteristics. On the other side, the movies are reduced to cameo-porn that looks like it was filmed inside of a Walmart Supercenter. So something like Joker becomes a reaction against that, when far better movies should be the reaction against it. Both approaches are breaking $1B at the Box Office with alarming regularity, while the 'real movies' bomb.

         The audience is infantile, and the movies are following through with it. I'm hoping it all implodes and comes back as something that is inspired to be a great movie instead of just a popular piece of cape-sh*t.

            Eh im not that pessimistic about it, but I can see the appeal to an extent. I think what is frustrating to DC fans is that these days you have people talking about how CBMS are too saturated and getting stale, but unfortunately DC has yet to be able to get a great cinematic universe and Justice League movies like Marvel. So people are still eager for that to happen and don't want to see it all go away yet.

               I still think there's a way to do a shared universe without having a situation where in at least several movies you have to withhold story for later films (to its detriment), but no one's done it. There's a lot of theoretical fun in a universe of superhero movies to match what the comics do. But that has drawbacks to stories that can be told. You have to set this up to get to that, and you can't use this villain or resolve that particular arc or conflict because you need it to run through the later crossover entry. A lot of those movies wind up with middle-chapter syndrome. More than that play like filler and aren't exactly 'essential viewing' for the overarching storyline. Eventually, it's a balloon that either pops or deflates, but it becomes less interesting the more air you blow into it.
