A fast food chain rereleases an old menu item. You have good memories of the first release so you go to pick up a new one. You open and it seems pretty much as you remember it. However, when you start eating you realise it's full of rubbish you don't want and it's so incredibly filling. As you force the last of it down your throat you sit down, exhausted from your overfilling meal. If you can't tell, I'm over explaining my feelings towards this series. With that said, let's see if this month's burger is any better.

Gaslight, batkeep, batboss

Good lord. Every time I come back to this series I wish that it's trimmed itself down at least a little bit. If there was any issue so far for which I wished this was true the most, it's this one.

We start off exactly where we left off, Wonder Woman fighting a giant insect. The fight itself is very well written. The way Diana tries to talk the creature out of fighting and ultimately save it from freezing really gives you a sense of this version of Diana.

She communicates with Adam Strange via the Lasso of Truth and shows him a vision of her home. Which happens to include... Skartaris.

This to me, is the most interesting of all the subplots. My thoughts on Skartaris aside, seeing an alternate version of Diana to complement this Batman is honestly very entertaining.

Unfortunately, we rarely get what we want. We get to see Bruce's, or should I say, Mr Malones' exploits. He visits the Black Cat Club to pay Selina a little visit. She somehow deduces his identity in mere seconds giving no obvious reason and then teams up with him.

I wish I could tell you more about that plot thread but that is it! We then swap over to the ring in transport. Alan Scott makes an appearance as an spiritual pilot before his train is hijacked by The League Of Shadows.

The gaslamp is low

This story is going down much in my losing me more with each issue. Besides the fact that each issue is severely overstuffed, they keep adding more elements!

We have the crash from the beginning of the first issue, Batman, the Kryptonian age exhibit, Catwoman, Adam Strange's expedition, John Constantine and now Alan Scott! And we're only three issues in.

The art is as always superb. Fernandez really makes the book his own and is honestly the only reason I'd even consider picking it up.

His landscapes and character designs are some brilliant work, but I'd rather they be attached to some better organised writing.

Organised is the operative word here. The Wonder Woman sections are great and very well written, but it's hard to appreciate good writing when you're constantly cutting from thread to thread. If they'd focused closer on Bruce, or even not done Batman at all but Wonder Woman instead, I'd have vastly preferred it.

Recommended If...

• You want a few glimpses of the Gotham By Gaslight world
• Fernandez's art is enough to keep you
• Alan Scott fans maybe need a small win

Overall

This whole book feels like an extended cameo fest. A quick "ooh look at this character in this world" and then moving on. I'm waiting and hoping for the threads to start being woven into a bigger tapestry so we can start focusing on some individual stories. The amount trying to be put into this book honestly detracts from the overall quality of the book and doesn't allow me to give it a high rating.
