Upcoming Comics July 31, 2024

Welcome back to Upcoming Comics! Very few comics this week since it's the fifth comic day of the month, and therefor outside of the normal schedule for most series. Usually DC would fill weeks like this with specials and annuals (and there is one of those coming out) but I think everyone is probably so busy getting ready for and attending SDCC that they're just taking a rest. Plus, we already had an annual week back in April.

Thoughts: What's funny about "big" stakes for a story like this is that it's technically all in the past. It takes place back around Joker War, so we know that after this Jason will just go on to do the stuff we see him do in Gotham War and the rest of Zdarsky's run.

Most Excited: Red Hood: The Hill #6- Bit of a win on technicality, but I am at least somewhat interested to see how this storyline wraps up.

Least Excited: Absolute Power: Task Force VII #3- None of these Task Force VII issues seem to matter much, and just feel like filler to give most of the DC heroes something to do

"just feel like filler to give most of the DC heroes something to do"
that's usually what happens with event comics and they try to fill out the schedule with tie-ins (the worst part is when they interrupt ongoing storylines of individual books)

sometimes those filler stories turn out to be pretty decent, but usually it's throwaway middle of the road generic stuff. (how many different stories can you have of various heroes fighting the government, or robots, or vampires or....)

God, the Red Hood: The Hill solicit is a shameless troll. "Can Red Hood be the savior his new city needs"? Maybe if the writer would let him try. Maybe then. Not while he is just there to witness the awesomeness of Dana, the real main character.

The Hill looks so small and tepid next to everything that's happened since Martinbrough's run was cancelled. I have nothing nice to say about this mini, but I will say this: If Martinbrough doesn't write Jason very well, at least he has not (yet) used Jason as a punching bag.

I hope this thing ends for good after this issue and that it isn't setting up a new series.

Oh, and this is just great:
Snyder told the crowd that the Absolute titles are central to the core storyline that will be threaded through the DC All In initiative as a whole, in both core DCU and Absolute DC titles. “This is one big meta-story that drives the DCU for the next two years,” he said, describing it as “a ticking clock for the doom of the entire DCU.”
They can't even keep the multiverse stupidity sequestered away in its own corner, to take or leave as readers like. They have to plug it into their main line, forcing anyone who wants to follow the story to either (a) buy a butt ton of comics they may not care about, or (b) pirate like mad, or (c) throw in the towel, because it's gotten so expensive and/or time-consuming to follow anything.
Also, Justice League Unlimited .
Why is Batman News, "The Premier Source for All Things Batman and DC," not reporting any of this?

  THIS! You're saying exactly what I'm thinking. No reports on the new Batman group editor, or JSA, or New Gods either, or any of the Absolute titles

    Yep. The new JSA should be big news.
    They also haven't reported on the new Caped Crusader Penguin being gender swapped .
    Note that all my four links are to different sites. EVERYBODY is reporting this. Everybody except Batman News, that is.
    If anyone wants to prove to me that it isn't Sean's actual intention to make this obsolete, please do. I'm all attention. Some of us remember when Batman News was on top of all the latest and got dozens or hundreds of comments per article, per day.

      Well they finally reported on one thing lol. But yeah and the fact Sean and none of the other staff have commented on why they're so not on top of things now shows they really don't care. Unless it's toys(and even then the New Batman Adventures Wave 2 wasn't reported here which is baffling they love their affiliate link money)
      I used to use Newsarama till GamesRadar bought them out and ruined the sites functionality. I used Bleedingcool as a last resort because Rich doesn't do research, Marvelousnews for Marvel Legends figure news and Marvel Comics news but I have no real spot to get my DC news anymore

      My preferred theory is that this site was allowed to decay so badly under Sean that there's no longer enough traffic to make frequent news posts profitable. There are a ton of collectibles Batman News doesn't report about, too.
      I use Newsarama, CBR, IGN, or Bleeding Cool for DC news if I really want to know something. I almost always read solicits at Newsarama, for example. But I'm resigned to missing out on a lot of news because I don't feel like doing much digging and don't use social media. This site is only the "premier source" for anything Batman-related because I'm too lazy and habit-oriented to to check other sites most of the time.

      Yeah I hate social media outside my private groups, don't even have a Twitter account. CBR is not too bad. They have fun articles call Comic Book Legends Reveled I like reading. But yes this site really has let itself go it is sad, I miss the old owners

      The site's doomed, at any rate as a community. The only article getting any comments is about CC's Penguin.
      And still no reporting of ANY of the comic news to come out of SDCC.
      The last time Chris showed up, during the site's anniversary, he got jumped for selling it. Lol.

      I also use Bleeding Cool, CBR, popverse and aipt for news. But I also follow the bat-writers (& bat-editors) on twitter, so i can know when they have interviews on any media.
      PS: I miss the Gotham Spoilers page... and the old version of here (Batman-News).
      I always feel pity for the people who does the reviews of Harley Quinn, Catwoman & Titans... I'm a big fan of the bat-universe... but those I think are not necessary to review for the bad quality (only when the writer change I think you can return to reviewed it).

      Yeah, I forgot to mention AIPT, but it's pretty good. I've often viewed comic previews there.
      I've thought about following creators on Twitter before, but I've never gotten around to it. I'd probably just damage my mental health further by reading the wrong comments, lol.
      It's sad how many features of this website have been eliminated since it was sold. The reviews are useful for keeping track of comics I don't read, but as a source for news it's no longer very useful.
