DC announces "Joker: The World", to release in September

On Tuesday, DC announced Joker: The World, a spiritual successor to the Batman book with the same subtitle. For those of you who haven't read or heard about these books, let me catch you up to speed. Joker: The World will be a one-shot anthology with 13 stories, each set in a different country from around the world. There's a little something else though, as each story is also handled by a creative team from the country it takes place in!

We'll be getting stories from the US, Spain, Germany, Italy, Brazil, Mexico, Czech Republic, Turkey, Japan, Korea, Cameroon, Poland, and Argentina, which gives us 13 stories altogether. We've been told some of the people who'll be working on it, including Geoff Johns, who I'm sure needs no introduction. The other talent will include:

Satoshi Miyagawa, author of some of the DC manga titles such as Superman: Meshi and One Operation Joker, representing Japan
David Rubin, an artist on Dark Horse's Ether, representing Spain
German Peralta, who illustrated for the rebirth Green Arrow, representing Argentina
Alvara Fong Varela, representing Mexico
Jason Fabok, the artist behind The Three Jokers, who will presumably be illustrating Johns' story

That's all the information we have for now, with more updates between now and September. The book will be released on September 17 in all the countries previously mentioned.

Oh, thank God! It must have been a whole 10 minutes since we last saw this character. I was genuinely getting worried that DC had forgotten all about him and that we might never be subjected to him ever again. My Clown Prince withdrawal symptoms were beginning to kick in...

But now.....we (finally!) have this.

**breathes HUGE sigh of relief**

On a serious note, this does actually sound like an interesting concept. I hadn't heard of the prior Batman version mentioned, so this is a new one on me.

I like the idea of getting to see different national takes on such a well-known character. It could be fun seeing exactly what situations each puts him in, as well as how any comedy translates internationally too.

This might actually be a good showcase for what DC COULD have been doing with this character these past years. When he's not in the hands of 'creatives' like Zdarsky, that is!

Plus, the fact that it will be a one-off should lend it that obviously unique quality. May better appreciate the content knowing it's a stand-alone and not part of some sort of 'mini/maxi' series.

I'm actually going to look out for this in September. Didn't think I'd be typing that when I first saw the headline!

I'm always pretty sceptical when it comes to Joker stories, which is pretty often considering how many there are. I haven't read the Batman one for a while, but I think it's a great idea. It gets some people who wouldn't normally be able to write a Batman book in the chair and I think that's always a win. Glad to hear you excited about it!

DC has dozen of existing interesting characters (just in Gotham alone, they don't even have to come up with new ones) that are just not being used.
Instead we get dozens of interchangeable Joker stories.
I doubt that the fact they will be written by international writers will make them standout more.

I am absolutely not defending anything Joker-related (I hate this character ardently, more than words can tell), but since his next movie is coming out in October, it would be crazy not to expect two to three months of even more than the usual deluge of bad Joker comics.

I am of two minds about this (as another great villain might say).

On the one hand the character is grossly overused and quantity has won out over quality. The only Joker stories of the last three years I remember thinking worth the trouble to read were The Three Jokers and The Man Who Stopped Laughing. Other comics from the same period have done nothing but diminish the character in my eyes and fortify arguments for his temporary retirement.

On the other hand when used well he is one of pop-culture's greatest villains, love him or hate him. An anthology not by DC's stable of writers and free from continuity will be able to explore those facets that made the Joker popular around the globe, virtually a global folk hero, in the first place. Conversely, if the writers are only here to extoll him it could further fortify those arguments for his retirement.

To tell the truth I'd prefer an anthology that featured more or other villains and used them to speak about issues significant to the creators. The Joker doesn't communicate any better than Two-Face, Clayface, or Mad Hatter yet we hear from him so much more.

My decision on this one might come down to a flip of the coin.
