Rachel Brosnahan shares thoughts on the Superman: Legacy suit

What's it like preparing to play one of the most famous journalists in all of fiction? Rachel Brosnahan has discussed some of her preparation for the role of Lois Lane in Superman: Legacy.

Brosnahan attended the SAG Awards on Saturday night and spoke with Deadline about her upcoming turn as Lois Lane. “I’m still preparing. I’m talking to some journalists, I’m reading a lot of comics — so many I hadn’t read before. It’s been really fun to dig into this universe," said Brosnahan.

And she also shared her reaction to the Superman suit, saying, "I got to see the suit — and I was blown away, so I hope the fans are as well."

Also in attendance was Anthony Carrigan who will be playing Metamorpho in the film. Asked about the project, he said, "I am incredibly excited. I'm bringing a character to life that, you know, has never been done before. There's some pressure there." He went on to add, "I'm thrilled to be a part of it. I'm honored to be a part of it."

Superman: Legacy is due to start shooting this week and is scheduled to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.

I like her, and I'd like to say I'm looking forward to seeing this movie, but I can't lie about that. It just seems to be shaping up like an ensemble action comedy instead of a pure Superman film. Seems to be James Gunn's only party trick. If the DCU is exemplary of Gunn's sensibilities as a filmmaker and storyteller, then I'll just be patiently waiting for the next reboot...

We don't anything about the plot or tone yet.
We don't even know how much each character will be featured in the movie.

  I mean, you're not wrong, but he's made 4 comic book films plus a TV series in his career which all had the same basic structure as ensemble action comedies. And said comedy is very juvenile at that, often undercutting the drama of the moment - like when Star Lord challenged Ronan the Destroyer to a dance-off right at the highest dramatic point of Guardians of the Galaxy. That just neuters these stories for me when the filmmaker is having a 'moment of clarity' for us to all laugh at how dumb it all is instead of really capitalizing on what real movies do once they've hooked you. Real movies don't sit on a proverbial whoopie cushion at their tense moments. They're not embarrassed to have tense moments... I don't trust a director who always does that, when it comes to Superman. Superman should be treated with the utmost respect. You don't have to take it TOO seriously, but it should be taken seriously enough. I doubt it will be.
  And then he (Gunn) cast a Superman film with primarily other superheroes in supporting roles. It just doesn't inspire confidence that this will be distinctly Superman or different from the rest of his movies. He's only directed a couple non-superhero movies, and they're both comedies. One of which just sucked...

    What gives me a little hope is that ,regardless of tone, he always gives his characters at least SOME depth and knows when to tone down the comedy sometimes (unlike Waititi for example)
    I even found Harley not unbearable in 'The Suicide Squad' (and that's really a feat nowadays with how various writers are writing her)

      He definitely has a knack for making you emotionally care about wacky things, but it's his penchant for wackiness in the first place that wears me thin. I wouldn't be totally surprised if there's a flashback scene where a young Clark Kent demolishes an abandoned, condemned building with a super fart while testing out his powers or something...

    Give it a chance. There is no point in having such strong expectations when we know little to nothing about what Gunn is actually going to do here. Idk why people here seem to dislike Gunn so much, but then again a lot of people on this site seem to dislike everything from what I have seen

      We know a bit just from the fact that it's a James Gunn movie, and he's filled out the supporting cast with other superheroes. What are the odds that the plot is some variation of Superman rallying a ragtag group of misfit superheroes against a larger threat? Is that a bet anyone would want to take?
      And this is the comment section. If we're happy, we're probably quiet. But the problem is we've gone from Zack Snyder being the creative force for DC films to now James Gunn, and both are completely formulaic one-trick ponies that a lot of us don't enjoy.

      Superman has a tougher crowd to please. Gunn makes a certain thing that I, for one, don't really have an interest in seeing for Superman. I guess there comes a point where a thing just isn't for me anymore, though.

      Thats what Im saying. If anyone can do it, Gunn probably can lol. I get that his humor is hit or miss for some people, but I think he is also smart enough to understand what is and isn't appropriate for Superman tbh, and realizes the importance of this movie. Regardless of Gunn directing, I am not expecting this movie to be a full on action comedy like GOTG or Suicide Squad. But I mean, if Gunn's style just doesn't work for you at all, then ya I guess maybe there really is a small chance you will like what he does here...

      Whatever it is, it'll be a James Gunn movie. He's not gonna shed his sensibilities for it and make a totally different movie than he's made before. I would not say I dislike James Gunn movies, they just have a low ceiling for me. I've enjoyed most of his work as basically entertaining. He's good at making you emotionally care about something completely absurd (like the talking CGI animals). His movies convey a degree of sentimentality for things that really shouldn't work. But Superman doesn't need that type of gimmick to be interesting. Like, do you remember how in GotG Vol. 1 there's this running 'Footloose' gag that gets several payoffs over the runtime, one of which being "dance off, bro, me and you"? And then in Peacemaker, much of the irreverent humor is about pop culture topics and 'taboos'? There's a certain self-awareness and gimmick to it all.
      That's not my ideal version of an action adventure movie. I don't want the overcooked references and gag characters. 'Real' movies don't do that. It's like something Dante and Randle from Clerks would cook up for a Superman script, a more competent version of 'Kevin Smith in all his Mallrats glory'. I like a degree of natural humor in these movies, but I don't need some running Guy Gardner gag about whatever erectile disfunction with his ring, or feature length wordplay-comedy on 'Mr. Terrific', with callbacks to Grease by way of Superman's hairdo. I want a Superman movie the caliber of Raiders of the Lost Ark and Jurassic Park, a legitimate film in its genre. To go from one gimmicky director in Zack Snyder to another in James Gunn is just exhausting.

I agree with you. This isn't a Superman movie it's a vehicle to bring The Authority into live action film for warners/DC.
Going by Gunns sole DC output...The suicide squad....he dumped the dirty dozen original idea of the comic and went for his familiar "whoopee cushion" approach.
He's using Tom King as an adviser another DC writer prone to tropes and hugely polarizing among readers. I dumped reading Batman because of him and Tynion and zdarsky has not brought me back.
I don't trust Gunn to delivery A satisfying Superman movie and as I see it....it's not a Superman movie to begin with.

  Oh God, I forgot Tom King is working for them. His "Bat. Cat." poetry verse writing is so freaking annoying... I couldn't stomach it anymore - not to mention his knack for telling a huge story in the most mundane way imaginable, as with the so-called "War of Jokes and Riddles". It's like if an action movie just panned away and filmed a wall during the action scenes or something. He's also the reason I stopped reading Batman comics. And even now, if someone refers to Batman and Catwoman as "The Bat and the Cat" my blood pressure starts going up. He ruined that phrase for me. I can't hear it without thinking of his $h!+ writing.

    King abuses the idea of deconstructing a character. He gives you the equivalent a a cold fish head with the bones behind it and a radish and says..." oh you want seafood? You'll love it.". And when out of ideas? Public domain prose and song will do instead of actual writing. The same guy that killed Alfred and it had the emotional impact of a bowl of soggy cereal.
    This is the guy Gunn lauded as an adviser for his version of an attempt at the MCU for DC. And again....he's got cartoony characters like Metamorpho in this "no really its a Superman movie" bait and switch. I will be the first to eat crow here if Gunn proves me wrong and delivers a Superman movie as satisfying as what Donner did with 79 but nothing is showing me he will. It's going to be a James Gunn yuck fest full hipster retro pop culture and to shoe horn the Authority into live action. Tom King is perfect if you want an unsatisfying Superman movie.

  The one thing I would agree on is that I think bringing in the Authority specifically, and Wildstorm characters in general, into this world is a bad idea.
  Wasn't the whole point of the Elite (who were stand ins for the Authority anyway) was to show how much they don't fit in in Superman's world and go against everything he stands for?!

    One of Jim Lee's defining acts as a creator at DC was to try to replace Two-Face with a transparent knock-off, Hush. It blows my mind that people won't recognize this for what it was and is when it was an unconcealed, in-your-face dick move. If Lee thought he could score big for Wildstorm at Superman's expense and get away with it, he probably would do it without thinking twice. He has never been a good leader. He has always been a self-serving ass. And he has friends who are always willing to help him along.

      I don't mind the Wildstorm universe in general, I just don't think the integration with DC works well for it.
      part of it is because a lot of Wildstorm characters are direct, if not satires of established DC characters, at least homages to them.
      but also because the Wildstorm universe is inherently a lot more cynical than the DC one.
      It's not just that characters like Superman and Batman WOULD be considered jokes in the Wildstorm universe, it's that they also would be completely ineffectual.
      I think it's part of the reason I don't really like Red Hood, he's basically a "heroic" Wildstorm character (think Grifter or similar characters) trying to be forcibly inserted inside DC continuity.

    That's a great point...The Authority is actually Alan Moore ridiculing what he at the time saw as tired comic book stereotypes like Superman and Batman which he lambasts through Apollo and Midniter.
    And this is why I don't see a good Superman movie here. In fact I don't see a Superman movie here at all.

Can't wait until the trailer for this releases and it shows more heart and "serious" Superman in 90 seconds than the gloomy, brooding crapfest Man of Steel did in it's entire two and a half miserable hours.

  You say that like I care about Man of Steel or something. The idea that James Gunn is the guy you get when you want to do "serious Superman" is concerning. It's what the audience has been educated to, I guess, that goofy, well-done schlock with some charm like Guardians of the Galaxy is what passes for "serious and heartfelt" genre filmmaking these days.
