Upcoming Comics August 8, 2023

Hello everyone! Welcome back to Upcoming Comics! We’re into our second week of August already and I don’t know about you, but the month already seems to be flying by me. I’m also feeling Fall creeping as stores start to put out decorations and the heat presses in on me in a way that leaves me really ready for some cooler weather. And what better way to distract oneself from the heat than some comics? This week is pretty Knight Terrors light in the Batman department, but still overall focused on the event. Let’s take a look!

Welcome back, ghouls and ghosts! Deadman here-Boston Brand, again! My horror adventure continues as the Sleepless Knights attack us. But now I have a new problem: Batman’s son Damian is furious and keeps trying to fight me! My only safe haven is…the House of Horror.

Thoughts: I wasn’t that impressed with the first issue of this book, and I’m not really all that excited for the next part of the story. I’m hoping it’ll at least be fun to see Jason and Tim team up against the nightmare.

Spirit World #4

Cass Cain, Batgirl, has died before, and it seems the spirits of the Spirit World met her when she passed through before being revived by the Lazarus Pit…but then how come she doesn’t remember being there? Then, as Constantine’s memories start to fade after being in the Spirit World for too long, he begins to turn on Xanthe, who needs to find a way back to the land of living or Constantine will be a permanent resident of the land of the dead…either way, time’s running out!

Beyond the Bat

Welcome back to Beyond the Bat! Here we check out DC titles outside of Batman to see what else is being published! This area is the more Knight Terrors heavy part of the week with Green Lantern, Shazam, The Flash, and Zatanna all having their second issue of the event to look forward to.

Most Excited: World’s Finest: Teen Titans #2- With a solid, fun, opening I’m excited to see where the story goes next, and the focus on Donna. It looks like it’ll cycle through a general focus on highlighting each of the main characters, and I’m interested to see how they’re all showcased.

Least Excited: Knight Terrors: Robin #2- The first issue felt like a big nothing issue to me, so I’m not sure what more this can do to build on that or even keep my interest, but we’ll see.

Wild Card: Knight Terrors #3- It might be lingering affection from his Robin run, but I’m excited to see Williamson write Damian in this issue of Knight Terrors, if only to see Robin diving into the action and forcibly shoving the plot forward.

So which origin story (out of the half a dozen or so they already introduced for her) are they going with this time?!

Honest opinion: as much as I love Barbara Gordon, having her as tech support without being disabled feels a bit like the "worst of both worlds" (fueling the stereotype that Oracle is just a woman behind a computer screen whilst removing her status as positive representation for wheelchair users/ a survivor of a career-ending atrocity) but I think that Barbara being Oracle could lead to a solid story here...

What is happening with the penultimate issue of Batman: The Adventures Continue?

Knight Terrors: Robin #2 is destined to be awful.

They need to hand Jason to a better writer with a sense of character and reestablish his continuity that been blown to hell with every arc post-Flashpoint. He doesn't even HAVE a continuity right now. He has ONE reference story, A Death in the Family, and it is hot garbage. It was never a good story. It was not "good for its time." There were many good stories written then. This isn't one of them. Anyone who think it is good by any age's standard is either drunk on nostalgia or (it has to be said) a moron.

Does it sound crazy if I tell you that DitF is referenced so frequently, in so many comics, that I almost forget that there IS a story where Jason returned? Like, I know it exists and can talk about it. It's my favorite Red Hood story by miles. But when I think of the Red Hood canon, DitF trumps everything else.
Harley's problem (aside from major quality control issues) is that they keep going back to make her present course seem like the inevitable, best one, and writing bundles of comics about how all along Harley was really Nu Harley, only we couldn't see it because it was so cleverly hidden away. Almost like it didn't exist. Usually they get that out of the way with one or two stories, some exposition, and a few flashbacks. With Harley, it goes on and on. Fitzmartin was trying to do that with Tim. It's the kind of thing fans live in fear of.

  This. Exactly. There's no excuse. He's not a new character who appeared out of the blue. He has a long history. Zdarsky's story could be a bridge between Then and Now. But you're right. Nothing came of it before, so who would believe anything could come of it now?
  I'll spare you another repetition of my "This is why I stopped reading" speech.

In terms of Bat books, looking forward to Teen Titans. You can tell Waid loves these characters and it feels good to give them a chance to shine. Especially since all of them, save for Dick and recently Wally, get no attention or appreciation from DC despite being such old legacy characters attached to fairly popular heroes.

Outside the Bat books, Superman has me in a chokehold. What an absolutely fantastic book! Super fans and Superfamily fans have been eating good and I hope the feast continues.

The Zatanna Knight Terrors book is actually pretty good. I do hope this reveals that she will be getting an ongoing soon. She is such a fan favorite, but never gets the spotlight. Hope that changes soon.

The only thing I would object to in the Superman books, is that it seems like they added the Superman of China (Kong Kenan) to them for absolutely no reason beside him having the Superman title.
he has no real connection to the Super-family and he serve no real peruse on the book itself (he's mostly just there as a background character)
He's not even an American Citizen as far as I know. (Is he crashing illegally at the Kent house?)
I would rather have him get his own book back, or even the Justice League of China back (though I can see why DC would want to avoid publishing a book about a Chinese nationalist super team at the moment)
At least the Batman of China has more to do on Batman Incorporated (though not much more)

Tend to agree with the view that Damian's introduction might just make the latest edition of Knight Terrors worthwhile. It will certainly add a new dimension, and yes, hopefully provide a bit of a shot in the arm for the plot.

Was ready to give up on the main story last week (I don't hate it but it just hasn't really grabbed my attention) but I might just give it another try.

Don't normally read team books but I'm interested to see what Waid does with the Teen Titans, after a strong run with Batman/Superman. Thought it got off to a pretty decent start, so think I'll pull this and hope it continues in the same vein.

Didn't pickup Robin No. 1 and nobody seems to have had good things to say about it, so that's an easy skip. Spirit World has been interesting and fun so far though.

Beyond the Bat: will definitely be picking up the Superman Annual. Liking what I've read so far in the Man of Steel's books and so curious to learn more about the 'World of Metropolis'. Also planning to grab Green Lantern and Zatanna.
