Representatives for Paul Reubens, best known as Pee-wee Herman, have shared that the actor has passed away at the age of 70.

Reubens, an actor, comedian, writer, and producer has passed away at the age of 70. The information was shared by the official Pee-wee Herman Facebook account.

“Last night we said farewell to Paul Reubens, an iconic American actor, comedian, writer and producer whose beloved character Pee-wee Herman delighted generations of children and adults with his positivity, whimsy and belief in the importance of kindness. Paul bravely and privately fought cancer for years with his trademark tenacity and wit. A gifted and prolific talent, he will forever live in the comedy pantheon and in our hearts as a treasured friend and man of remarkable character and generosity of spirit.”

Reubens exploded into popularity in the early 1980s thanks to his Pee-wee Herman persona that he had created while at the Groundlings improvisational troupe. While the character started as mildly disguised adult humor, he later transitioned to an actual children's entertainer with a popular television series.

He entered the world of Batman lore when Tim Burton cast him as Oswald Cobblepot's father in Batman Returns. The actor and director had worked together previously on the film Pee-wee's Big Adventure. He would go on to play another iteration of the same character in the Gotham television series.

Those weren't his only brushes with DC properties, he also voiced Bat-Mite in Batman: The Brave and the Bold and LEGO DC Comics: Batman Be-Leaguered. He also voiced Mike the Spike in the CW series, Legends of Tomorrow.
