James Gunn casts Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, and Mr Terrific for Superman: Legacy

James Gunn has added three actors to the Superman: Legacy cast in the roles of Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, and Mister Terrific.

In an exclusive report from Vanity Fair, it has been revealed that James Gunn is quickly populating the new DC Universe. Isabela Merced, Edi Gathegi, and Nathan Fillion.

Merced (Sicario: Day of the Soldado) will play Hawkgirl, and she will be joined by Gathegi (Twilight) will be paying the super genius, Mister Terrific. Fillion, a mainstay of Gunn projects, will be playing Guy Gardner of the Green Lantern Corps.

The trio of new additions will be joining David Corenswet as Superman, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.

The news comes two years to the day before the release of the film, and on the eve of a potential actors strike across all of Hollywood. With major roles still to be cast, Gunn may be speeding up his casting process slightly.

Superman: Legacy will hit theaters on July 11, 2025.

  Except Guy works better when paired with others, if you read comics you will notice Guy doesn't really get solo comics.

    Then he should debut in the Green Lantern show they’re making, as opposed to being a side character in Superman’s movie. It feels like there are already too many characters in the movie who aren’t generally associated with Superman.

      Too many characters? What 4 characters? Hawkgirl is a freaking JL member so she has plenty of connections to Clark. As for Guy well funny thing we don't know the plot of the film, villain or Guy's and the others heroes roles so.... Gunn has an amazing track record at juggling characters and making them fit in his stories (Adam Warlock being the exception in GOTG3) so he's more then earned some trust here.

They're really planning to use this film as a springboard for the whole Gunnverse. I'm worried it will be overstuffed, but it should give us a good idea of what we're facing.

Points to Gunn for choosing a non-obvious Lantern, too.

Hmmm....interesting.

Sure these actors will all do a good (or at least competent) job with their characters.

Just slightly concerned that the film could become too overcrowded with characters though. This is supposed to be a Superman (not Justice League) film after all, and none of these characters are typically linked all that closely with the Man Of Steel. Am wondering how they'll fit in without taking up too much screen time from Supes and his (main) supporting cast.

Could be nothing more than cameos here, to setup future films, I guess.

Anyway, I'll continue to hope for the best.

  I'm being a bit of a b*tch here, I know... and frankly, I'd be lying if I said the possibility of Guy (or any GL, really) & Hawkgirl on the big screen doesn't excite me (never cared too much for Mr Terrific). It's just that I'm also so over this whole "cross-over" stuff. I get that this is a "interconnected universe" but the best CBMs have ALWAYS been those that don't worry about any of that nonsense. So in that sense, I feel like it's a big risk. It's fine to do this stuff later on, but now? With the "first" movie in your "rebooted" universe? I don't get the priorities here.
  Also, it bothers me more than it should that he cast Fillion to play Guy when he also played TDK in the Suicide Squad, whose cast isn't even being dropped. This blatant lack of consistency & care, and favoritism for his "friends" is what's gonna ruin this whole Gunnverse, I swear...

And just how 'smart' of a move is it to make the same mistake of the DCEU by thrusting audiences into a pre-established universe with all these superheroes already running around by movie 1? Even the DCEU at least used a catalyst jumping off point (Zod's invasion) for every one to start crawling out of the woodwork.
But Gunn? There's already a Green Lantern and Hawkgirl. No big deal.
My mind continuously gets blown by how people have done a total 180 on what they hated originally and now will just blindly accept just cause it's James Gunn doing it.
Newsflash! James Gunn is not god. He has an admittedly good track record with superhero movies, but once upon a time, he wrote Scooby Doo. Stop blindly acting like he can do no wrong.

  I agree but I also get the desire to have pre-established characters, bc the truth is ppl are tired of having constant reboots & "starting over", so they want to "skip" that by having these characters already be their superhero versions. I think it's a double edged sword tbh.

Much as I want to see Green Lanterns having Guy Gardner tells me Gunn is going for the crappy humor he writes into his team movies. You can debate GOG but his Suicide Squad was utterly forgettable.

      Fight Club is widely loved as is Shawshank but like with TSS there were reasons they were box office flops and none of it was "audiences don't want it".
      Here's why TSS flopped. Covid what impacted everything that year not called Spider-Man, same day release on HBO Max (where it done well), an R-Rating and a confusing title that made it seem like a sequel to the first one. Like with Fight Club though if you show a random joe TSS chances are they will like it.

I like those movies, but I won’t pretend that they are universally beloved by all humanity. If they were they would have been billion dollar blockbusters with a string of increasingly desperate studio mandated sequels, prequels, and reboots.☺️

      The Shawshank Redemption and Fight Club are still being talked about by the general audience. People barely remember there was a The Suicide Squad movie. Most people rather remember Ayer's movie than Gunn's.

      Not relevant to my point and do you have statistics to prove Ayer's film is talked about more? The fact Peacemaker got a popular show and is even appearing in the new MK game (leaked) says TSS has had more impact.

  It's not that they are using Guy and not Hal, it's that a Green Lantern will be introduced as a side character in a Superman movie instead of getting the focus that the GL corps needs.
  Sure, the optimal scenario is that we will get such a project later, but I'm not not holding my breath.

It depends on how big of a role they will have in the movie and if they will be new or already pre established characters.
In the Black Adam movie it felt unfocused because we basically had two competing movies of :
1. A Black Adam origin movie (with Adam being written\acted like he's the Terminator for some reason)
2. A JSA intro movie of them dealing with Adam (with 2 old members coming out of retirement and 2 new young members)

One of those concepts could have worked, together they made the plot feel unfocused.
They really should have made Black Adam go up against the Shazam family in his first movie, where the conflict would have felt more natural.

I honestly don’t see him as Guy, but I think it’s a good addition, especially since I feel like Gunn usually draws from the 1980’s comics the most, tonal wise at least. I think he would have made a great Hal. Now it’s likely Guy is older than Hal and John in this universe, which seems weird, but can work with the theory that Clark feels the need to set a better influence than current super heroes like Guy and the Authority.

  I'm guessing Hal is in his 50's, Guy is the 2nd human GL with John being the new GL who serves as the main GL going forward and maybe being or becoming a JL member. The fact the DCU will have at least three GL's is exciting though, hopefully providing it all pays off we can see Kyle and Jessica on screen as well.

    If Hal’s in his 50’s, might as well go with Fillion. But there are plenty of others I’m sure who can fit that role. My guess is him and John will be similar ages and military bros with a history but fairly new to GL Corp.
    What’s the over/under on Gunn having Batman one punch knockout Guy a film or a post credit scene? I’m going 90%…. and taking the over.

      It's such an off take... He voiced Hal for years, tons of fans (including him I believe) have clamored for him to play Hal in live action for years, he looks and feels like Hal, he plays other characters like Hal... James Gunn makes him Guy.
      It just feels like a cheeky middle finger way to pretend to be cute or clever on Gunn's part, and that vibe is obnoxious and played out in all his movies.
      The last thing I want for Superman's cinematic comeback is to overstuff the film with cheeky side characters, and then worse to fumble those characters with Gunn's typical tropes and undercut their introduction and longevity.

      Yeah you make a good point. Hopefully Gunn has a plan that will allow the characters to appropriately fit the story. It seems like he’s starting with a Universe filled with established super heroes, but they don’t represent the ideal that Superman strives for, which allows him to better prove to existing characters what it means to be a true hero. I also feel like some characters probably should only be used in minor roles in this universe, and since Gunn is a comic book fan, I am cautiously optimistic that he will give us characters mostly true to their history. I definitely don’t agree with everything Gunn has decided, but I am still fairly positive on where he may be taking us. Not nearly as positive that people will actually show up to watch after all the L’s the DC brand has taken.

As others here have said, it’s a big risk adding all these non-Superman characters to a Superman movie, and now they’re adding Metamorpho. Just seems like DC is putting the cart before the horse once again, just like they did with BvS.

Merced as hawkgirl is... interesting to say the least.

She is absolutely drop dead gorgeous, no doubt about it. But she's extremely small too... I think around the 1.50 m range. It's one thing for the character to have "superpowers", but the truth is, when you have a person that small standing next to big(ger) people (not just men, a woman like Gal Gadot is very tall & believable in her power), not sure it's gonna work.

In terms of acting skill, I guess she's okay. Her role in sicario was quite limited & beyond that she hasn't done much.
