Upcoming Comics July 8, 2023

Hello everyone and welcome back to Upcoming Comics! This week we have a few new Knight Terrors titles starting, alongside some of our regular content like Batman Inc! How are you all liking the Knight Terrors titles so far? For my part I’ve seen some mixed reviews and I feel much the same way. I’ve discussed my own dislike of long events and this one promises to be long but there are some interesting ideas being played with in a few of the titles and some fun to be had depending on what you’re reading. Time will really be the telling factor with this event, to see just how many diamonds come out of the run of titles, and how enjoyable readers will find it as a whole.

Knight Terrors #1

Hello, ghouls and ghosts! This is Boston Brand, a.k.a. Deadman, and I’ll be your supernatural tour guide across the Knight Terrors stories! After that fancy special oversize issue you have to read first, the whole world is trapped inside their nightmares, and Batman and I are trying to figure out who Insomnia really is…and why he wants revenge on the heroes of the DC Universe!

Thoughts: This is one of the reasons I don’t like big events. It just–makes it hard for readers to stay engaged.

Thoughts: Worlds Finest is one of my favorite books out right now, and to see a Teen Titans title spinning out of it has me really excited. I’m interested to see just what Waid has in mind for this retelling of such a classic group’s stories!

Beyond the Bat

Welcome back to Beyond the Bat! Here we look at the titles coming out this week that aren’t Batman focused. On the docket this week are a number of Knight Terrors tie ins, like The Flash and Zatanna. Normally I’m excited to see a Zatanna title, but I’d rather it be something other than nightmare fuel. Still, it’s good to see my girl getting some focus again!

Most Excited: Worlds Finest: Teen Titans #1- I’ve been really enjoying World’s Finest and I’m looking forward to this as more of that fun, with characters I really enjoy reading.

Least Excited: Batman Incorporated #10- I'm still not on board with this whole Jokers across the world idea that Batman Inc is playing with right now, and just not interested in seeing where it goes.

Wild Card: Knight Terrors: Robin #1- I am hopeful that despite the nightmare fueled story there is something hiding in this comic that will highlight the brotherly relationship between Tim and Jason, and not just bring up old hurts.

Insomnia is such a nothing villain (they could have just used Dr. Destiny for this, at least he's somewhat defined) and the individual issues are also nothing to write about.

practically all of them feel like half baked, underdeveloped concepts that were done better before with the same characters.

The only one of them that felt like it had a little more potential was the Ivy one, but even that one felt like it just ended abruptly without fully exploring the idea.

I don't know how you can say the Ivy one ended abruptly when that was only the first of two issues. All the Knight Terrors character tie-ins are two-issue stories.

Hell yeah, more Spirit World!!!! I am loving that series so much. I'll happily pick up more World's Finest, that's been a wonderful series as well. Plus, anything for more Donna Troy. <3 Probably ought to pick up Zatanna too!

You'd think I'd jump at the chance to read Jason written by someone who isn't Rosenberg, but the solicit for that Robins issue is awful.

I don't mind Jason fighting or working with other members of the Bat-Family from time to time, but I don't want him having to be a confirmed member, the semi-reformed family asshole. It means giving up too many of the things that make him who he is and making all his stories about who he ought to be: Dick. Because DC treats Jason like a second-rate, defective Dick Grayson and I hate it. (Why does DC pit the Robins' fans against each other with all this "BEST ROBIN" bullsh1t?) Any time they associate him with the Bat-Family, it's all about how Jason is an ingrate and a bully and the worst Robin and he needs to change: He needs to give up his guns, stop using lethal force, be nice to his "brothers," learn to play by Bruce's rules, and Get Over It.

Why not let him be himself on his own or with other teams? Liberate from Bruce and the Joker and let him move on.

And give him back his good costume, for fvck's sake.

I made what I thought was a safe, thoughtful, swear-free comment about how DC has messed up with Jason, but it's "awaiting moderation," which, as well I know, means it's never seeing the light of day and I'm never going to know why.

Here's take two, shortened: Jason does not need to be a member of the Bat-Family and DC needs to stop making his stories revolve around his relations with them (or still worse, his relations with the Joker). He does not need to be reformed. He does not need to be compared to the other Robins and cast as an ingrate, a bully, and the worst Robin. He needs to be allowed to move freely in new directions, away from the Bat-Family. I would prefer to see him on his own, working with Croc, Two-Face, and other good-ish rogues, or in other teams that have nothing to do with Bruce.

I forgot all about Tyler.
You are right. That could be a great story that pushed beyond the bounds set by previous Red Hood story. It could give Jason a chance to face the real-world, mortal consequences of his actions and try to redeem himself with someone he doesn't have a long, fraught history with. It would mean looking at the best and worst of Jason Todd in a new light. The story has some beats in common with his earlier, better origin, when Two-Face killed his father. Jason would need to face his inner and outer demons head on and ask what sort of person he is. It wouldn't need to involve Bruce much and it could be written without a single reference to the Joker.
It's coming as a revelation (all over again) to me that this story about Jason and Tyler exists in potentiality, baked into recent canon, but that we've been preemptively robbed of it.
Williamson also suggested we'd get a story about Jason helping Roy find Lian, but it doesn't look like that's happening, either. Not that I care about teen Lian, anyway. She's a new character.

Once again DC saves me money as there's absolutely nothing here I'm remotely interested in.
Please cut Jason Todd loose, let him go play in his own city like Nightwing does , let him get brutal again (especially since Marvel has mothballed The Punisher) and watch the character take off. Why can everyone see this except DC?

The really twisted thing about how DC has screwed up Jason is that he's a very popular character, despite all the setbacks he's faced. I believe the current DC leadership dislikes him and wants readers to dislike him, too.

  Aside from the odd guest appearance, it's been a good while since I last read any Red Hood.
  The last I recall was 'Battle for the Cowl' (Tony S. Daniel) and then 'Batman & Robin' by Grant Morrison/Paul Cornell (both were pre-New 52). I never really got into RHATO or any of the team books he's been associated with since.
  Being Red Hood, and his particular attitude towards crime fighting, was exactly what allowed JT to develop as a character and to step out of Batman's shadow.
  He was the one who never quite fit as part of the Bat Family (which seems to grow by the year these days!). He was unique and offered something different.
  His perspective on life (and crime) was understandable, given his past. You didn't necessarily have to agree with his outlook for him to be an interesting (and compelling) character to follow.
  Unfortunately, he's about as close to the Punisher as DC have got. As Mingthemerviless has mentioned above, Marvel have apparently shelved that character now. I've not read the last story in fairness, but if I understand correctly, it basically affirms all (real world) criticisms of that character. Doing that, and then disappearing the character (forever?), seemed to be more important to Marvel than continuing to offer new Punisher comics for sale.
  If DC's editors have a similar outlook then JT is likely going to be reduced to a purely supporting role (as and when a particular story suits it). Or his character will be changed (watered down) so much so as to be virtually unrecognisable (this may have already started idk). Or he'll just be quietly phased out altogether. Jason who?
  Instead, wouldn't it be better for them to invest in, let's say, a 6-part Black Label series and see how that sells?
  Something that really leans into Jason himself, as a character, as he undertakes his mission in city X (Red Hood: Year One, if you like). No Batman, no Joker, no team involved - just a lone vigilante.
  That might offer conclusive proof that there IS an audience for RH/JT (just like there is for Nightwing). It would certainly bring me back to Red Hood anyway.

    There IS a confirmed audience for Red Hood. Jason's divisive, but very popular, thanks more to Arkham Knight and HBO's Titans than to recent comics. Not long ago he was leading more than one comic at a time because he was a hot property. He'll probably have a new solo book by early 2024 and it will probably have all the same problems as his other recent books: Too much Batman, too much Joker, too soft, and too forgiving.
    DC's afraid to let him be himself. They want him to be just another cute bad boy with a heart of gold. There's a sentimental imperative to make him fit in with the other Bats. It's reached its apex (or nadir, from my POV) in the Webtoons.
    He meshes better with villains and troubled civilians than with other heroes. He should be written as someone with good intentions (most of the time), but not as a nice guy. I think it's important NOT to make every former protege of Bruce Wayne follow in his footsteps.
    I'd love to see Jason as a brooding, furious, lone vigilante again. A Black Label book that let him be himself, uncensored, would be wonderful. Winick was the best Red Hood writer and if I had my way, DC would return Jason to his roots. He'd wear his old costume, carry guns, and be a force to be reckoned with once again, not the immature dimbulb of a second son that DC is trying to turn him into.

      The reason I mentioned proving the existence of an audience was about showing (conclusively) the appeal for a particular version (interpretation) of the character....not some watered down version that was JT in name only.
      In other words, shoving it right in DC's face and saying "look, there's money to be made here". Give the people (customers) what they want, kind of thing.
      What you've described is the Jason Todd that I remember (the furious vigilante). Since his resurrection, that was the character's dynamic and USP. He should be as different in temperament (and actions) from the likes of Dick Grayson and Tim Drake as Batman is to Superman.
      Unfortunately, I fear that the character I remember (and that you prefer) might very well be viewed as 'toxic' by DC's editors these days, and so not someone that they want to actively promote or be associated with (just like Punisher at Marvel). This might explain the character changes you've mentioned, and which I've thankfully been (mostly) spared.
      If, as you say, there's a solo Red Hood book released in early 2024 then I may very well pick up the first issue. If I'm confronted by, to use your words, a 'cute bad boy with a heart of gold' or an 'immature dimbulb' then I won't be picking up the second (or any other).

Yes, that does sound like the ideal format for something like this. It could have been an interesting one-off to tie in with Halloween, similar to those festive specials DC have been producing for Xmas in recent years.
Instead, the way it's been presented feels like little more than a cash-in really, and something that some (perhaps most) will very easily choose to skip.
Hopefully enough of the writers will find interesting ways to incorporate their specific characters. From what I've read so far, mixed results.

Have to agree with what was said about the numbering on these 'event' comics.

IMO, 'First Blood' should have been No. 1. What they're releasing as 1 & 2 should then have been 2 & 3, and then whatever they're calling the last one should be No. 4. That just keeps things so much simpler for potential readers (buyers).

As an aside, I also dislike when comics clearly intended as a one-shot are released as a No. 1.

As for this week's offerings...

I guess KT 1, just to keep up with the story. KT: Robin will be a quick flick through at the CBS to see if it seems worthwhile committing to.

Wouldn't ordinarily buy Teen Titans, but the Batman/Superman version of WF has built up a fair bit of good will with me, so guess I'll give it a try. Also interested to see how Spirit World develops.

Beyond the Bat: have started to read the new Green Lantern, so I'll pick that one up. The Zatanna one sounds interesting too.

I guess KT 1, just to keep up with the story. KT: Robin will be a quick flick through at the CBS to see if it seems worthwhile committing to.
Wouldn't ordinarily buy Teen Titans, but the Batman/Superman version of WF has built up a fair bit of good will with me, so guess I'll give it a try. Also interested to see how Spirit World develops.
Beyond the Bat: have started to read the new Green Lantern, so I'll pick that one up. The Zatanna one sounds interesting too.

I find it funny how they had to force Bumblebee into Titans because god forbid there's an all-white superhero team.
