James Gunn turns in first draft of Superman: Legacy script

According to a new report, James Gunn delivered the first draft of his Superman: Legacy script last week, beating the deadline set by the Writers Guild of America.

The Wrap is reporting that Gunn delivered his draft last week, meaning that pre-production work can continue on the film. Gunn announced that the earliest stages had begun in mid-April. Currently, he is wrapping up promotional duties for his final Marvel film, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, while beginning the casting process for this Superman film.

Currently, it is believed that Gunn is looking to begin production on Superman: Legacy in the first quarter of 2024.

The Writers Guild of America called for a strike beginning at 12:01am Pacific on May 2nd as negotiations broke down with producers. Once the strike is declared, all work must stop on TV series and movies written by members of the guild until such time as a deal can be reached. While the last strike in 2008 lasted for 14 weeks, some industry analysts are saying this one may last much longer, with some even pointing to a possibility of December before an agreement could be reached.

Superman: Legacy is due to hit theaters on July 11, 2025.

  It eliminates the concept of gods. Makes them mere mortals. Kryptnians are just lucky aliens who happen to have enhanced abilities under a yellow sun. A god doesn't have limits or restrictions or rules to their powers, they are deities.

    I would have more sympathy for grievances if Snyder was doing a headcanon thing, but he basically just shared an early brainstorming idea. Clearly he didn't think it was good enough to put it in his version. That's why brainstorming exists, to float ideas and see what works.

      This may, somewhere, have been an idea worth considering back during the MoS days, when Snyder & WB were still pretending like this was a TDK "realistic" & "grounded" version of Superman & the DC world... where things like magic don't exist... so yeah how would you explain superpowered being on Earth during those times? Descendents of a Kryptonian who crashed on Earth thousands of years before makes "some" type of sense I suppose... but that quickly went away after MoS, when the "fantastical" was possible, including things like magic. We saw it in BvS with WW & then in SS (the SAME YEAR) with Enchantress.
      Not to mention the absolutely over the top nature of Doomsday or Batman - a human being - showcasing superhuman strength & durability.
      Not that it would have been a "good" idea in that context, but it would've been somewhat acceptible... but to come clean about these ideas NOW, after all the fantastical BS that's happened? Effing please... Snyder just loves when his "fans" applaud his "genius". It's a cult.

    I mean I don't disagree with you necessarily, but it would depend who has access to the current script. If someone else in the writers guild does, then there would be obvious changes when they start shooting if not resolved before then.

GotG Vol 3 was highly entertaining imo. Gunn knows how to juggle multiple characters and flow his narrative swiftly while upping his action game with every film. There’s a scene which I honestly feel is his best action sequence to date, and there were 3 in TSS I absolutely loved. A lot of complaints about how little Adam Warlock was in the film, but one thing is for sure, Gunn can handle a Superman action sequence deftly.

I just hope he keeps it simple for his first installment. My only concern is he might go a little too wacky. We don’t need to see civilizations living in the Earth’s mantle, Sampson and Hercules challenging Superman to feats of strength for Lois’ hand, or Lois having 24 hour super powers for that matter. Go with Brainiac, who even after Supes beats up on and seemingly destroys, leaves a piece of himself with LexCorp. Or Luthor and Metallo. Or Luthor and Parasite, if need be. I personally don’t like Parasite, but he seems like the type of villain Gunn would enjoy using…. Just keep it simple, establish characters, flesh out their relationship with Clark, and let Supes kick some arses and throw down like the Alpha Superhero he has always been.
