Batman: Caped Crusader lands two season order at Amazon

Amazon has stepped in as the new home of Batman: Caped Crusader with a two-season order for the series.

Batman: Caped Crusader was first announced in May 2021 as a direct-to-series order for both HBO Max and Cartoon Network. It was then revealed in Aug. 2022 that the series would not move forward at HBO Max in order to cut costs, but would be shopped around to other streaming services.

Amazon finally stepped in with the two-season order. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Apple, Hulu, and Netflix also expressed interest in the series.

Batman: Caped Crusader will be executive produced by Bruce Timm (Batman: The Animated Series), J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker), and Matt Reeves (The Batman). The series will be produced by Warner Bros. Animation, Bad Robot Productions, and 6th & Idaho.

“We are beyond excited to be working together to bring this character back, to tell engrossing new stories in Gotham City,” the trio said in a statement when the series was first announced. “The series will be thrilling, cinematic and evocative of Batman’s noir roots, while diving deeper into the psychology of these iconic characters. We cannot wait to share this new world.”

“It is always fun to feed the insatiable appetite fans have for all things Batman,” said Tom Ascheim, president of Warner Bros. Global Kids, Young Adults and Classics. “Batman: Caped Crusader will entertain first-time and die-hard fans alike and, with such an impressive creative team in place, we know we have another future Batman classic in the making.”

“Batman: The Animated Series was a masterpiece that shaped the perception of the character for an entire generation of fans,” said Sam Register, president of WBA and Cartoon Network Studios. “It is in that spirit that we are bringing together three master storytellers in J.J., Matt, and Bruce – each with their own intuitive understanding and affection for the character – to create a new series that will continue in the same groundbreaking legacy.”

No word yet on a premiere date for Batman: Caped Crusader.

When it comes too superhero adaptions i fully trust Amazon so yeah good choice. Invincible, The Boys and now this just confirms Amazon is the no 1 choice to watch comic book adaptions.

Interesting. You really wanna see more of the show? last 2 seasons were so painful for me to watch. It made me sad how they had butchered the show

  Yeah sure.
  The main problem with the last two seasons is that they lacked focus (way too many characters and too many sub plots) but I wouldn't say any of them were written badly.
  It would be a shame not to see where they go with the Darkseid plot or what happens with characters like Supergirl.

  Careful what you wish for. The show ended after the second season, fans demanded continuation, authors did not know what to do with it, and there's the result.

    It's not that they didn't know what to do with it, it's that they had TOO MANY ideas and didn't focus on two or three of them and instead tried to do everything, everywhere all at once.
    Instead of the show being mostly about the new team or even their replacements, it became about:
    * The old team
    * the new team
    * the Justice league
    * various supporting characters
    * 3-4 villain groups at the same time

  I liked Phantoms much more than Outsiders. It felt like the creative team somewhat listened to the feedback about Outsiders and curbed the focus on the new "Team" in the fourth season

Since The Rings of Power I consider Amazon hit or miss, so I'm not that hyped about this. Recent comic books taught me that just because your favorite character is in it, it don't mean it's good.

I usually go by the creative force behind the show (which 'The Rings of Power' had pretty sh*tty ones)
This one has Timm and Reeves which is good, but also Abrams which is less good (unless you want your product to look pretty on the outside, but mostly empty on the inside)
So I'm going with the 'wait and see' approach

I think Bruce Timm's judgment can be tempered with Reeves invovled and visa versa. Expecting good things from this. Timm gave us one of the best and purest forms of Batman, period.

  I was rough on it at first but it got my respect upon a recent rewatch. Tad hokey but they had some cool action moments, good acting and I really feel they got Batman right...Greg Wiseman wrote the s1 clayface finale and Paul Dini took over in later seasons.

    I think he only did the Harley Quinn origin episode, which provided a more villainous take on the character (She's a "Trash TV" host instead of an Arkham psychologist) with a more balanced relationship with Mr. J. But fellow BTAS head-writer Alan Burnett was show-runner for the last two seasons...
    The mid 2000s Batman had its share of interesting aspects, but a lot of them went underused and underdeveloped (including creative reimaginings of Clayface, The Riddler and Poison Ivy, who only got a few appearances apiece). However, it had enough merit to earn a decent fanbase of its own...

I am curious about the "More BTAS than BTAS" comment used in the initial unveiling. I am aware that the original show could sometimes be constrained by producer interference, but one of the best things about BTAS was the way in which the tone could vary from episode to episode whilst staying within the "Dark Deco" style - For every "Heart of Ice" or "Perchance to Dream", there was an "Almost Go 'Im" or a "Harlequinade".
The presence of Brubaker and Rucka suggests a degree of 2000s angst and moral ambiguity, but that's not at all a bad thing (It's amusing to note that Brubaker wrote an issue of the TNBA spin-off comic Gotham Adventures, where Batman meets The Phantom Stranger). However, I would like some elements of fun and comedy to balance things out a bit...
