Penguin set photos give first look at Sofia Falcone

It was a busy first day of filming for the HBO Max The Penguin series, and set photos and videos show off Sofia Falcone and more.

The Penguin series for HBO Max has begun filming in and around New York City and some set photos and videos have already surfaced. We already saw one batch on Monday, but more surfaced throughout the evening and overnight.

Colin Farrell was filming a scene with Rhenzy Felix getting into a new Maserati. Apparently, Oswald wasted no time getting a new one.

Next up, Cristin Milioti was spotted in a car, as well as filming a scene with Farrell. She will be playing Sofia Falcone in the series.

Rhenzy Felix (Runaways), Michael Kelly (Jack Ryan), Shohreh Aghdashloo (The Expanse), and Deirdre O’Connell (Outer Range) have all joined the series in unknown roles. Clancy Brown has joined as Boss Maroni.

The series will see Colin Farrell reprising his role as Oswald Cobblepot, and Cristin Milioti has joined the cast as Sofia Falcone.

Craig Zobel (The Mare of Easttown) has signed on to direct the first two episodes of The Penguin. He will also be serving as an executive producer on the project.

The Penguin project has been discussed for some time and was ordered straight to series shortly after the premiere of The Batman in March 2021.

Matt Reeves' 6th & Idaho Productions, Dylan Clark Productions, and Warner Bros. Television are all working on the series. Daniel Pipski from 6th & Idaho Production will also serve as an executive producer along with Rafi Crohn as a co-executive producer.

The Maserati is absolute fire! Farrell's Penguin looks great. Dig the nod of the early days of Penguin with the purple tones. And I do prefer Sofia Falcone big and thick like she is in the comics, but this looks like it will be a fun watch. Great to see some BTS clips.

always thought the giant woman was an odd design personally so I don't really care. Like, who did she inherit those features from? Lol. Some of Sale/Loeb depictions in general were a bit strange and particularly stylized in a certain way. I also wasn't a fan of the Riddler in those stories

  Well, Falcone is big a strapping Italian dude. Read Batman's The Long Halloween. He is not the scrawny guy like John Turturro is in The Batman. I did not like his casting at all. But in animation, she naturally gets those features from her father - thick and big boned, strong, fierce and wanting to prove her worth to her father. Not your ordinary woman to cast visually. And it's part of why I love her character. Very definitive. But with Turturro's Falcone, you can cast any petite actress or whatever and it wouldn't matter.

    i haven't read it in a while but I just don't remember ever thinking Carmine was a particularly large man tbh. Isn't Sofia notably bigger than him? Idk. My last exposure to that story was the animated film and the difference was pretty stark there from what I remember. Sofia looks more like the daughter of Wilson Fisk or something to me lol

    Agreed. I never saw Falcone with Turturro on screen. Felt the same about Joker, Penguin, Riddler, Bruce and Alfred. All great actors, but not the right look or personification in my opinion….. I got over it though, because this is Reeves’ vision, and it’s his own universe to make as he sees fit and he’s very adept at executing his vision… so I’m ok with it. Even if the characters seem off to me, I know we are getting great performances and great story telling to flesh them out.

      ehh. As someone who consumes tons of batman media, comics or otherwise, I definitely see "versions" of all these characters. Not seeing them at all seems pretty disingenuous, though im not sure if thats what you meant. But I know some people are just really married to specific comic iterations of the characters to a T. Thats not a criticism, but it's not something I totally relate to when it comes to adaptations

      Oh I was speaking specifically for how I view the characters. And for the record, I love the film. I always wanted a David Fincher Batman film, and this was as close to that as I could possibly imagine. But I felt Joker was a disheveled burn victim, Penguin was Al Capone, Riddler was Zodiac, Bruce was Goth Gambit and Alfred was a limping bodyguard/absentee parent. And I’m not even knocking those representations, I just didn’t really feel like I was watching the characters who I’ve spent decades following. I definitely don’t begrudge any who feel like they are accurate depictions, I’m only speaking for myself and how I always viewed the characters, both physically and personality wise.

I know we don't usually see the word "easygoing" describing Italian Americans, but what other culture would tolerate an Irish guy wearing 100 pounds of makeup to look like an Italian gangster? You couldn't put blackface on a blonde actor and have him speak Ebonics. You certainly couldn't make up an Irish actor to look Jewish, with a big hook nose, etc. and have him speak like a Jewish delicatessen owner. Jews and Blacks wouldn't tolerate it. And yet, here's Farrell looking like a Sicilian uncle, doing a "How ya doin', I'm Oz" voice, and the other Italian actors have no problem with it.

I liked Farrell's performance. I just find it interesting that it's noncontroversial, especially in today's climate.

Because we Italian’s aren’t big crybabies and we understand how acting and costumes work - the fact that Ferrell does such a amazing job shows his skill as a professional. It was never meant to offend people so we don’t act as if it was.
