Mattson Tomlin to co-write The Batman 2 with Matt Reeves

Matt Reeves is going to be working with Mattson Tomlin on the script for The Batman 2 when writing commences.

While he didn't receive a screenplay credit on The Batman, Tomlin worked with Reeves on the third act of the film when some problems arose. For the sequel, he will be working with him from the beginning.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, work is expected to begin in the coming weeks, but no further details are known as of yet other than Robert Pattinson will be reprising his role.

As to the villain, no information has been released as of yet. Despite Barry Keoghan having played the Joker in a cameo at the end of the film, there has been no confirmation he will be returning for this film.

The Batman went on to earn $767.93M globally at the box office. The sequel hasn't officially been greenlit as of yet, but that step in the process comes after the script is completed and a budget is set. With his new first-look deal with Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed, it feels as though it will only be a matter of formalities.

  Generally speaking I would agree and it also depends on what state the D.C. universe is by that point. I just have concerns that 3 years is a long time to maintain hype/excitement for this franchise.

The guy doesn't have a lot credits to his name. He wrote Project Power which was okay.
And the fact that he helped with the 3rd act of The Batman, the part I had the most problems with, doesn't really inspire me to be too excited.

Still I put my trust in Matt Reeves. The first film was good. And he has everything he needs to make the 2nd film great, like The Dark Knight.
I just hope he imlroves some things. Like a shorter length. More focused plot. And maybe more extensive action sequences.

he also wrote Batman The Imposter. I had zero problems with the length or narrative structure personally, so I hope he keeps it long and epic

  I don't have a problem with a film bieng long. I just felt that The Batman was unnecessarily long.
  The whole 3rd act with the flood felt kind of tacked on to me. And it felt disjointed from the rest of the film.
  If a solid narrative requires a movie to be 3 hrs long or even longer than I will absolutely be in support of it.

    Just my opinion, but I disagree about the 3rd act. I thought it was epic. It's the Riddler's payoff; what he's been working towards the whole movie, riling up his violent online fans. It's also where the Batman finally grows beyond vengeance into hope.
    The flood also sets up a good sequel. Gotham's corruption may have taken a hit, but the flood introduces more chaos into the city and more challenges for the Batman.

      I think that's the problem I have.
      You say he's been working towards the flood thing the whole movie. But I never felt.
      The whole movie he's all about exposing Gotham's corruption and only punishes either criminals or corrupt people. Kind of showing a more corrupted version of Batman's vigilantism.
      But then suddenly in the 3rd act he wants to flood the city, hurting a lot of innocent poor people, and wants to kill a bunch people because they are rich.
      It just never gelled with the things he was saying and doing in the first 2 acts.
      Same with the Batman becoming a hero thing. I felt like the point that Batman's violent actions are actually inspiring people towards violence and that he has to become better is conveyed very clearly the moment Riddler says he did what he did because of Batman. We didn't really need a 3rd act just to reiterate it.
      I said this before. For me atleast, before the 3rd act, The Batman was an awsome detective noir film, with a complex morally grey villain and a unique ending where our hero loses but learns from his mistake.
      After the 3rd act, The Batman becomes another action film, with a big bombastic climax, an obvious bad guy and a generic ending about our hero saving people.

      There’s quite a bit of foreshadowing with the sea wall and Gotham Square Garden throughout the film. I think Bruce’s talk with Alfred at the hospital could have lost a minute, but otherwise I’m grateful for an overlong Batman movie that mostly focuses on Batman. It’s a first.

      Honestly, I didn't see any foreshadowing. And foreshadowing alone does not necessarily organically integrate plot elements.
      Like I said I don't have a problem with long movies. Some of my favourite films are more than 3 hrs long.
      I just felt like The Batman didn't warrant it.

      Runtime felt natural in a theater; not sure if I’ve seen it in a single sitting at home, though.
      “Does not necessarily” is hardly a rhetorical lynchpin, but yes, the third act foreshadowing is more visual cues than plot points. “Trail of breadcrumbs” mystery staples, even though The Batman isn’t exactly a mystery

    i see that sentiment about the 3rd act somewhat often. I don't really agree with it being unnecessary to the overall story being told, and I think we will see how the ramifications of it affect things in the sequel. Though i do agree it was tonally different from the rest of the film which I can understand being a bit jarring to some. It had animated series vibes imo, so I liked it for what it was regardless. And it has that great moment of him lighting the way.

well if the intent was to make him grotesque and uncomfortable to look at, then it seems it achieved that goal. For a lot of people at least.

I'm surprised Tomlin didn't get credit for his work on The Batman. I didn't know writers went uncredited anymore. I thought it was a union rule that writers got credit.
