Tim Burton shares some thoughts on what he hated about Batman Forever

As we approach the 30th anniversary of Batman Returns, Tim Burton has shared some thoughts on what he disliked the most about Batman Forever. And, yes, it's exactly what you think it is.

Speaking with Empire, Burton is reminiscing about the 30th anniversary of his second Batman movie. While the full interview is not out yet, a snippet has been shared that gives you some looks into why he stepped away from the series.

As he talks about Joel Schumacher's two films, the topic of the nipples on the costumes comes up. “[Back then] they went the other way. That’s the funny thing about it," said Burton. "But then I was like, ‘Wait a minute. Okay. Hold on a second here. You complain about me, I’m too weird, I’m too dark, and then you put nipples on the costume? Go f*** yourself.’ Seriously. So yeah, I think that’s why I didn’t end up [doing a third film]…”

We're sure the full interview will share some additional information about his departure from the series, but for sure he was not a fan of the nipples.

I agree. The suit was fine without the nipples.
What bothered me was Schumacher’s choices. I don't remember if it was Forever or the other film he directed, but there's a scene where Schumacher zooms into Batman's rear end. I was with my kids in the theater and they looked at me like "why did he do that?" and I had no idea how to explain it. I'm guessing it was an in-joke, a nod to Schumacher’s friends.

The black Kilmer suit and Robin suit in Forever are still really high up on my list of costumes. Too bad we never got a scene of those two together. I hated the sonar suit and Robin was in that costume for like 3 scenes at end of film. Did not like the redesigns for B&R at all.

The nipples on the Batman Forever suit honestly don't bother me at all. I get what they were going for with the Roman Centurion armor. However, they DO look bad on the Batman & Robin suits.

I love Batman Forever. It's a comfort movie for me. It was the first movie I remember seeing in a movie theatre, and I'll always love it. But I would trade it for a 3rd Burton movie with Michael Keaton.

He didn't do a third one because returns was so out there it ended up bringing in 33%+ less than the first one, with an equally less general reception as well. Batman forever, despite its issues, was a better movie than Returns in nearly every way, and has the financial and reception to back it up.

Also, let's not forget that Burton was involved with Forever, so he has no ground to call them out on it when he himself was a part of it. He met and approved Schumacher taking over, he met with the new writers and agreed with them on the story's direction, and he got top billing as the movie's producer.

If Returns released in the internet era, Burton would've rightfully got the "you ruined this iconic character!" treatment, instead he gets the pathetic "underrated masterpiece!" incoherent nonsense from nostalgia-ridden idiots.
Batman 89 was great because he had to work within the system, then after the first film's record-breaking success the studio let him have complete free rein with Returns.....and we got a live action version of A Nightmare Before Christmas. Meanwhile Batman Forever was an infinitely better Batman movie/movie in general.

  Batman Forever was a dreadful movie, even in its day. The only watchable part of it was Jim Carrey. And it's not like the profit margin on Forever was actually any better than Returns. You might be looking at a few million either way, which is essentially a wash.
  Batman Returns is an arthouse Batman movie. It's not for everyone, but at least it had a soul. At least there was something driving it. Batman Forever gave script and costume approval to McDonald's...which showed up onscreen in how schlocky and toyetic it is.

    Batman Forever excelled at being both an excellent modern-day adaption of the lighter Dick Sprang era of Batman comics (exactly as the director stated on record) *and* the incredibly dark side of Batman (the scene of Bruce Wayne willing to tell Two-Face he's Batman while Dick Grayson's parents plummet to their deaths moments later is more emotional than the literal entirety of the incoherent trainwreck Returns.
    Bad Movie Beatdown on YouTube summed up that complete abortion and pathetic excuse for a Batman movie to perfection, and it did it all using *inarguable facts*. Try it some time X- )

      Batman Returns had a point. Batman Forever didn't (I'm not kidding when I say that the characters had no agency, or that they made decisions with no rhyme or reason).       These are terms you obviously have no clear grasp on, other than the mistaken impression that using them in your comments gives you some sort of credibility with you saying unsubstantiated BS.       And, also, Batman and Batman Returns are both better adaptations of the Golden Age Batman than Batman Forever is some Silver Age Batman. Schumacher's films, even playing devil's advocate and going along with this suggestion that they're '60s Batman inspired instead of 2 hour toy commercials, would still be derivative in spirit of the Adam West series. But it that's the case, no one told Kilmer who was sleep-walking through the role and has admitted as much.

What reception has Forever got to back that up? It's less critically well received, and the audience ratings are uniformly lower. While it made a little more money, it also had a higher production budget. So it's not really any more profitable. Also, B&R tanked in its aftermath, from the first weekend on, which does speak to Forever having killed the franchise a bit.
It's an absolutely terrible movie... Even Kilmer clowns on it.

    The fact is that Batman Returns is much higher rated than Batman Forever, both critically and by audiences, on the metrics that we have; that being Rotten Tomatoes and and IMDB. Go look.
    While Batman Returns is a fantastical movie, the characters in Batman Returns had actual agency. They had motivations, as driven by pathos. There's a psychological basis to the decisions they make, even in a fantastical context.
    Batman Forever is just cartoonishness with no rhyme or reason, as focus-grouped by spineless shills kowtowing to McDonald's. It's artistically bankrupt, on top of being nonsensical. The characters have almost no motivations for anything they do, aside from Robin who is completely useless in the movie other than his revenge tale. Certainly a strong appearance by "Robin, the boy hostage" in that one... You certainly don't want to play the "movie analysis" game with defending Batman Forever. You're free to like it for whatever superficial and schlocky charms it has, but it's nowhere close to an actually competent movie. And if I want Silver Age Batman on the screen, I'll watch Adam West. At least that was creative.

      - Batman Forever releases, and due to a combination of incredibly positive word of mouth from audiences combined with the movie literally dominating pop culture on a Ghostbusters type-level, Forever manages to make 70 million dollars *MORE*, despite still having to fight through the attached stink of its woefully botched predecessor.
      Facts......facts.....and facts yet again.

      Box office analytics... You left out a few points, btw:
      - You said that Batman Returns owed its opening success to Batman '89. Well Batman Forever opened higher than Batman Returns and had a steeper second weekend drop.
      - If you want to suggest that Batman Returns' opening weekend was due to Batman '89 hype, well, Batman & Robin, the sequel to Batman Forever, had the lowest opening weekend of the series. It tanked after that due to poor word of mouth, but it still indicated franchise fatigue off the heels of Forever.
      - Batman Forever had a higher production and marketing budget than Batman Returns. In terms of profitability, the movies were a wash. General rule of thumb is the studio gets 1/2 of the domestic take and 1/3 of the international take. The difference in profit is less than $10M, which is very likely well eclipsed by Forever's marketing cost.
      - Batman Forever dominating pop culture on a "Ghostbusters-type level". Lol... well in reality Batman Forever also had nowhere near the legs of Batman '89.
      - Batman Returns made 28% of its total domestic cume during opening weekend. Batman Forever made $29% of its total domestic cume during opening weekend. Since you are clearly not very bright, this actually means Batman Returns had slightly better legs from opening weekend.
      - Bonus: IMDB has safeguards in place for bot accounts and literally doesn't count scores from accounts with less than a certain number of ratings.

It's not like the first one set light and poppy expectations of what's to follow. "I'm of a mind to make some mookie". A guy gets burnt to an actual crisp, just as gruesomely as Max Shreck. Vicki Vale pretends to be going down on the Joker to distract him for Batman. The Joker burnt half of a woman's face off and then is implied to have murdered her to pursue another woman. You got bodies piling up with frozen grins, etc.
Burton's films were essentially mismarketed, if anything, when it comes to content. That was exasperated with Batman Returns due to what today would be commonplace franchising promotions/tie-ins.

With Alicia Silverstone, they wanted nipples on her too. They said, 'If the guys have nipples, the girls should have nipples, too.' After I sculpted it though, everybody realized, maybe not. It was a bit obscene, so we took the nipples off.

So weird.

It was a bad idea from the start, but it's in some ways the least of the movie's problems. Still, putting nipples on a costume is begging to be laughed at.

I absolutely love Burton's BATMAN '89, but really don't care for RETURNS. I don't hate it, but I seem to rarely watch it (a bad sign.) For all of the hatred that gets directed at him, I think Jon Peters had a good handle on the property and kept Burton from spinning into his patented "dark carnival mode." RETURNS is a Batman film that appeals to aesthetes.

As a long-time comics fan, I find FOREVER to be an amalgam of everything that came before (comics, tv, and film) and does it in entertaining fashion. Not a great film, but it's fun. B&R is a train wreck, and I think most of us can agree on that.
