Viola Davis reportedly in talks for an Amanda Waller series at HBO Max

It seems that The Wall may be coming to HBO Max as Viola Davis is reportedly in talks for an Amanda Waller series.

According to a report from Deadline, Viola Davis is in talks to star in and executive produce an Amanda Waller series at HBO Max. Christal Henry (Watchmen) is set to write and executive produce the series which will be pe made by Warner Bros. TV.

James Gunn has been saying for some time that another spinoff from The Suicide Squad was in the works, but wouldn't reveal what character it centered on. He said that the series would be "connected to this universe," but it "won't be as much a comedy as Peacemaker."

Davis has played Waller in both Suicide Squad movies as well as in two episodes of Peacemaker. There's no indication as of yet as to what part of her life the series would focus on, but she has not been explored to great extent in live-action TV or movies. In the comics and various animated series she is involved in multiple black-ops situations, so there is plenty for a HBO Max series to explore.

No word as of yet on a title or a timeframe for release.

Joker and The Batman were great. Everything else has been trash. Warners should reboot Superman, Wonder Woman, flash and Aquabro as they have Batman and keep them separate. DC isn’t Marvel and shouldn’t try to be. The differences should be celebrated.

    I know the question wasn’t for me, but I think the first WW is overrated. There was just something about it I didn’t like. In fact, I’m not a fan of any DCEU film other than Man of Steel. I prefer The Dark Knight trilogy or The Batman.

      I'm also not really a big fan of any DCEU film tbh.
      Didn't like MoS at all. Wasn't "horrible" & had potential but the plot is a mess. It desperately tried to imitate Batman Begins whilst failing to understand why that movie worked so well & why the flashbacks were integral to the plot. Snyder's poor storytelling didn't justify the constant flashbacks which in no way connected to the current day story.
      I despised BvS. I truly hate that film with all my heart.
      SS was horrible. Don't "hate" it I guess b/c I don't care enough about the source material, but it's a mess in every way. Directing, writing, acting, editing, cinematography, etc.
      WW was "okay". It just lacked focus & the third act was very weak & undermined the message of the film. But Patty Jenkins has a strong sense of character.
      JL is laughable.
      I do enjoy Aquaman as a strictly "turn your brain off" kind of popcorn film. It's very well shot & directed, but obviously the story & acting are nothing to write home about.
      Shazam is a "decent" film I guess but also pretty bland imo. The orphan/adoption storyline was something different but beyond that it also lacked focus & the story wasn't really going anywhere, same as WW.
      BoP is far too ideological & detached from the source material, alongside petty direction.
      WW84 is a weird one b/c I recognize it's a deeply flawed film but at the same time I genuinely connected deeply with the main themes of the film & I understand what Patty was going for, so I'm far more forgiving towards that film than most.
      SS2 is a legitimately well made film. I definitenly enjoy it, but it's also more flawed than many like to admit I think. Constant "telling over showing", bland exposition & cop-out "deaths" (beyond the misdirect in the beginning, no one really died or was in any real threat. Flag was the only death that landed. I mean, SS1 was criticzed for its lack of stakes/deaths but in reality, just as many Squad members died in the first movie).
      I don't count ZSJL but even if I did, it's just faaaaar too long, bloated, lacks focus, often boring & slow, etc.
      And that's it.
      So basically, I enjoy Aquaman & I think SS2 is a good film & that's about it. The rest, I either tolerate, don't care for or hate. It's really not a good look. I did love The Batman though but I don't count that movie as being part of the DCEU.

      Man of Steel - I felt it was the closest we’ll ever see to a Nolan version of Superman. It is the only DCEU film that I love and it’s one of my favorite CBMs of all time.
      Dawn of Justice - I feel it’s just an overstuffed mess. It’s not a good Superman film nor is it a good Batman film. It’s just a terrible film.
      Suicide Squad - I feel it had a great cast, but everything else was terrible.
      Wonder Woman - An okay film, but nothing special.
      Justice League - Joss Whedon did great with his Avengers films, but gave us an abysmal, unfunny Justice League film.
      Aquaman - A fun theater experience with terrible pacing.
      Shazam! - Like WW, it’s okay, but nothing special.
      Birds of Prey - I could barely finish this film. I hated and despised every minute. Probably the worst of the bunch in my opinion.
      Wonder Woman 1984 - The story felt forced, weird, and pointless. Patty Jenkins definitely took the franchise in the wrong direction.
      The Suicide Squad - It was alright, just not my type of film. James Gunn at least made a better and more enjoyable film than the first.
      Zack Snyder’s Justice League - It was too long with an empty plot. It could have easily been trimmed down to a 2 and a half hour film.

      Agreed for the most part & where I don't agree, I get where you're coming from. Ultimately, the DCEU has been a complete mess overall. Such a shame.

      Agreed. Still love Patty Jenkins and her view of WW though but I was really disappointed how they really dropped the ball with the WW1 time period. Felt like the war was happening in the background while WW and Steve are out to attack some gas factory? Who cares? It's why the No man's land scene was the best. Although being critical, even then you could notice the lack of scope.

      What did you think of Patty's direction? Specifically when it comes to her view of WW & how Diana should be/act? B/c that, to me, was the one (and very/most important) thing that sold me on Patty being a great pic for this character. Her version of WW is loving, kind, perhaps naive at the beginning, but strong-willed & determined, without ever coming across as bitter, hateful, biased or petty. Was never too deep into the WW comics with some exceptions here or there, but I always despised how many writers wrote the Amazons & Diana to be very aggressive & very hateful towards outsiders (so, "men" basically). I understand the desire to make some type of "commentary" on why "men s*ck" or something, but I always felt like no one should be lectured about "sexism" & "oppression" by a class of misandrist warriors who abduct & rape men to secure their species. It's just widely hypocritical.
      If writers want the Amazons to call out "man", that's fine, but then they shouldn't be written as sexist rapists themselves, which they often are portrayed as (a horrible take on the Amazons imo). However, if they really want to make the Amazons act like female supremacists, that's fine too, but then they can't use them to lecture how "bad" men are either b/c that's just hypocrisy. It's one or the other & many times writers tried to have both.
      This is why I respect Patty so much. Her view of Diana & her relationship with "men" is pure. It's innocent. It's based on genuine curiosity, which is something we all relate to. Patty could have EASILY used WW1 to make some type of "social commentary" about the "oppression of women in 1915 but she didn't go there, b/c Patty understands that society at that time wasn't kind to anyone. One's desperation for a "female oppressed" commentary kind of falls flat when you see dozens of mutilated & killed soldiers - all of whom were male - in the very same movie. This actually wouldn't be beneath most directors today I reckon, but Patty stayed strong & did the right thing. She had it be part of Diana's character. Meaning, she's innocent in "our" ways & doesn't understand gender dynamics, so ultimately these things ARE pointed out in the film, just not in any kind of preachy way and I will ALWAYS love Patty for that.
      Idk... I'm rambling here... I was just curious tbh, because as far as I'm aware, you're basically one of the only women on this site.

  The first WW film is pretty excellent in my opinion, in fact its one of my favourite comic book films. Shazam was also good and TSS was fantastic.

Also, regardless of whether I like her version, I just have no interest in a Waller series. Just give us Peacemaker S2 & we'll all be happy.

This might be a decent chance for the character to actually get some development or nuance compared to the cartoon villain she has been since the first squad film.
Admitably I’m hoping this might wind up being a Squad or Secret Six show or Waller managing a team of villains.

  I get that she's supposed to be ruthless & not a charmismatic character, but at least I should be able to respect her, and with her version I don't. It's specifically her combination of cowardice & unlikability that turns me off so much.

  I hated Peacemaker by the end of movie, because you were supposed to. I had no idea how I could possibly stomach watching a TV show about him because he was an unlikable piece of shit. (But god, the show was so amazing)
  With Amanda Waller, I don’t dislike her because she’s a bad person and you’re supposed to. I just don’t enjoy the portrayal and the way it’s written.

  I never liked how the first SS movie was basically all about a rescue mission to save her... not to mention her also being scared at the end of being exposed & basically begging for Batman's protection. She constantly acts so tough but when it really comes down to it, this verion of Waller is a coward which I really don't like. the fact that she killed her entire team once Flag got to her location is also widely OTT.
  In SS2 I also couldn't stand her reaction when the Squad decided to fight Starro... I can't quite put my finger on it, but her complete lack of emotional control & disregard for anyone but herself just isn't what Waller's supposed to be imo.
  She's supposed to be ruthless & extreme, I get that. But they make her out to be a complete psychopath with zero spine. I've also always prefered the Justice League Animated Series portrayal where she's definitely acting in her own self-interest but she's not "evil" underneath & ultimately grows to become more human/sympathetic. Davis' version is completely irredeemabe as far as I can see, which again, I'd be somewhat fine with if she wasn't such a coward, but imo, she is.

Well, they supposedly canceled the Wonder Twins movie. Maybe someone over there is taking a closer look at what exactly is being green-lit.

  Yes, I heard that as well. Things are definitely being examined more. And that is definitely coming from the new WB Discovery CEO David Zaslav. I'm loving it.
  I was reading a recent Deadline (dot com) article on him that talked about him taking up the leadership, going through the company's divisions and tightening up the reins, firing some executive management and hiring some new folks and canceling some productions. The article said he really desired better DC branding and part of that branding also included a Superman revitalization. And he definitely has his eyes on DC Entertainment and doing what he feels he needs to do to clean house and have better structure and vision.
  Honestly, this article was like music to my ears. It was like reading the perfect first steps that good change is coming for the House of DC in the midst of all that he oversees and operates with WB. He's putting his signature stamp on the empire and letting people know who's captain of the ship now.
  How extensive his switchups will be, I don't know. But I have hope he guts the toxicity out of DC like a fish and all the great things that DC can do can start swimming upstream together.
  And it's so ironic, but honestly, things like the lame productions being green-lit that are now being changed and canceled, the crap with Ezra Miller and the way he makes The Flash film now look, and the unadulterated garbage surrounding Amber Heard in this Johnny Depp vs Amber Heard trial that has people calling for change to find a new Mera or Aquaman 2 will be gutted (which also shows problems with the current management that choose to support her and look the other way)...
  All of it is showing a demand for change, better leadership, and vision that WB Discovery CEO David Zaslav ABSOLUTELY cannot ignore. It's all happening at once, an ugly but perfect storm for necessary change.
  It really is kind of incredible. A lot of DC's internal problems are all coming to light on their own. It's naturally that bad and is blatantly obvious when folks that care really take time to examine what's happening.
  My feeling now is, it may take all year because everything can't always be seen at once on what to do and who's best to come in, not to mention what's the vision and proper leadership to find for DC's overall direction, but 2022 has the potential to be a really pivotal, cornerstone year for DC - IF and I say again, IF - CEO David Zaslav is able to renovate and restore this DC house and give it new vision. Right now, it really has none, it's wide open for smart changes, and with so many new films that were coming out in 2022 now basically all coming out in 2023, (except for Shazam 2 now coming out in December 2023), it seems like this could be part of the CEO gameplan. Cleaning house 2022 and come out swinging in the new year for 2023.

I guess this is the additional The Suicide Squad spinoff show that James Gunn teased when Peacemaker first came out.

The Gunn universe is going to be a huge proponent in this DCEU overhaul that is inevitably coming. With the numbers Peacemaker put up Gunn will be one of WBs greatest assets as long as he doesn’t end up too over booked bouncing between DC and Marvel.

Everything he puts out is amazing and Viola Davis is the perfect cast for Waller, so excited to see this series come out. I would love if they explore more of her backstory with husband & children and her traumatic past that leads to the Waller we know.
