on Warner Bros announces The Batman 2 is officially on the way

It was only a matter of time, but a sequel to The Batman is now officially in the works at Warner Bros.

Speaking at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Tuesday evening, Warner Bros. officially announced that a sequel to The Batman is on the way. No details were shared other than Robert Pattinson will return to the role and Matt Reeves will direct once again.

“I’m excited to jump back into this world for the next chapter," said Reeves of the news.

The film has taken in over $750 million at the global box office off of a rumored budget of $200 million, and has had the second-best opening week on HBO Max since its debut.

No information was shared as to the potential release date of the film.

    The only thing surprising here is that they took so long to announce it lol.

    After TDK was so different from what I expected/hoped for after Begins, I have know idea what to expect from the sequel. I just know that I won't be disappointed. Reeve's franchise clearly doesn't want to embrace the comic book style world, but he gets the characters right, and after that not being present for decades at all, it's very refreshing.

    man I hope he does Mr Freeze next. Freeze + cold snowy Gotham + bluesier soundtrack = more noir awesomeness!

    Court of Owls is top of my wishlist and Hugo Strange as 2nd. Give us villains who haven't appeared in film before.

      We'll get Hugo Strange in the Arkham series (not yet confirmed by HBO).

      Court of owls is compromised because of all the clues we already have about the Wayne family in the first movie.

      What is certain : Penguin is still here and Harvey Dent is coming to Gotham.

      Court of Owls is my hope as well. Perfect time to bring them in with where Gotham is at the end of the film and in this setting of the wealthy elite in Gotham being so prominent. I'm cool with all the focus being on the Court. Actually, The Court of Owls and Penguin plotting his rise would be ideal for me. Birds of a feather flock together. The elitist birds and the street bird.

      I kinda think Court of Owls is boring, especially since they literally just did a secret cabal of rich people conspiracy, also secretly involving Bruce Wayne's parents.

        It does provide a natural flow of continuity though. And it won't be the only story. As the wealthy elitists complete their run, a new story can easily develop on the side to take The Batman saga into its next phase. There couldn't be a more perfect time for The Court of Owls to come into play here.

    Congratulations to The Batman and team. Not that there was ever any doubt.

    But in the sequel, I hope Reeves goes a bit more conventional with the action.
    Aslo, I hope he tackles the Court of Owls in the sequel. A lot of people before the film was released, speculated their involvement and now I just can't get over it.
    And it could be done in a fairly realistic way too.

      Car chase aside i wasn't a fan of the action, on rewatch its pretty lackluster in my opinion.

        Yeah. I get that Matt Reeves was going for a more realistic detective noir tone. But the action really was too understated and went by too fast.

        There is not one action set piece that stood out to me.

        Even Nolan who is hilariously bad at hand to hand combat scenes had some spectacular action set pieces across the trilogy.

        That's why I hope the action in the sequel is a bit more conventional to a modern blockbuster.

          Yeah that truck chase in TDK is incredible, The Batman has nothing like that. Honestly it doesn't even have anything on the first Bats vs Bane fight, say what you will about the fight choreography but the general mood, lack of score and Bane's monologue and exposing hulking form really help make it standout.

      Oh yes. It could certainly be done in a realistically way and it's a perfect time for them to come on the scene with everything going on in Gotham and where we are at the end of The Batman filming. The wealthy elite birds rise up (Owls) and the Penguin (street bird) seeks to rise up as well to build an empire as Gotham's new kingpin. It's a great way for Bruce Wayne to develop his character in Gotham and be a force for good in the city and it's a lot going on for Batman and do detective work on to uncover who the Owls are. Gonna take a lot more skilled fighting from him because the Owls are skilled. He's not world-traveled and trained in the martial arts like Nolan's Batman. He's more cut from the cloth of Batman: Earth One. But Reeves will definitely have to step his game up with Batman's combat and that's a good thing. We need to see that evolution of his character as he develops and becomes the Batman we all know.

    I hope the detective aspect is not the main focus in the sequel. I'm just not satisfied with Batman detective skills in this version.

    Excellent!
    For the sequel I’d like to see Bruce take more personal ownership over his company. I think it might be interesting to see how badly things have been going without his oversight. Perhaps incompetent CEO’s have run it into the ground and Bruce is in danger of losing his wealth. This could lead to Bruce eventually appointing Lucius Fox to run Wayne Enterprises by film’s end.
    Also, I think it would be nice if Bruce reclaimed his ancestral home and had it restored to its former glory and move in.
    I’m a bit of a fan of SCARFACE so I’d like to see Arnold Wesker appear either in the sequel in a small way or in the Arkham HBO Max show. As for mainline villains…. Mr Freeze. I’d really like to see Reeves out his own inimitable stamp on the character.
    But I’m open to just enjoying the ride. I guess what I want most is to be surprised again. I want to be treated to things I haven’t seen in any previous movies.

      Interesting pick in Scarface for a sequel choice. I love that the door is wide open to multiple possibilities with the sequel. With new villains having the ability to emerge with where the film ended and eyeing Gotham for a takeover, as long as it makes sense to the developing story, I think really anything is possible. It's a time for the Rogues Gallery to really blossom and if they are willing to go past the trilogy format for Reeves run, we can potentially see a lot of Bat's villains come out to play. I'm hopeful for it. With Pattinson's youthfulness, we are able to see all that happen over time and Bruce Wayne's persona develop into the presence he is supposed to be as well in Gotham.

        I would like to see the series go past 3 movies. I mean Garfield just appeared in his 4th Spiderman film and still looks great.

          Me as well. I think it can go to 6 films with Wayne only being in his second year as Batman. There's a lot of development we need to see with all these characters/villains that are just starting and the great part is, they are all young enough to show the right growth overtime for their roles.

    IMO, They need to shorten the movie length and brighten the movie somewhat if they want to make $1 billion.Moviegoing audience is now used to Marvel formula and many of them will find The Batman boring.

      Who cares about a billion? Who cares about a Marvel formula? The Batman actually felt like a unique movie from a director who got to complete his vision. I'm not saying movies like The Batman are true cinematic "masterpieces" or anything like that, but it IS the type of movie that people are going to remember years down the line. As much as I love the MCU, let's be honest, at this point, it's all become quite generic & feels more like every movie is just another "episode" in the MCU show directed by Feige, rather than individual films made by directors who were allowed to see their own personal & unique vision through.

      Look at Spider-Man NWH. Fun movie. Really enjoyable. But ANYONE could've directed that & it wouldn't have changed a thing tbh. The direction feels incredibly generic. These movies have no real identity & soul. Sure, some MCU movies are a bit lighter, some are a bit "funnier", some are a bit more serious, but overall, it never feels unique. Even Dr Strange looks to be quite out of Raimi's true control. I'm not seeing much of his classic directing style in the trailers.

      You need to also remember that the theaters aren't back to full force yet, the movie also had COVID to deal with in countries like China. It wasn't released in other countries like Russia b/c of the war. And then there's this HBO Max deal, which judging from the numbers, clearly had a massive effect on its US box office. Without these issues, it's a given that this movie would've done at least 100 million more in total. I never thought that the movie was a billion type material & I also doubt that any of the sequels will reach those numbers. But why does that matter? Movies that do 800-900 (my guess for the sequels at this point) are still massively succesful.

      End of the day, the movie was beloved by critics & audiences. That's what really matters.

      The last time WB tried to utilize the Marvel formula they hired Joss to add some wisecracks to Snyder's Justice League. Everyone had fun except the movie's cast and us, the audience.

      Shortening the sequel going forward is something I can understand for the fanbase future growth. When it comes to "brightening" the story going forward, the natural way that the film will be brightened will simply be done with the development of Bruce Wayne's persona that must be brought into the sequel. Bruce will need to make himself more of an established and dominant presence in Gotham for good and I believe he will naturally come to that understanding with how The Batman ended.

    As if there were any doubt. The Batman created a good start and solid foundation for great potential to come and the ending (outside of the cameo) positioned Gotham in a great space for a lot of interesting things to happen from different angles. Looking forward to the sequel and hoping Reeves can appropriately one-up himself.

    This time I hope they leave any/all surprises out of the marketing. I think The Batman was really good but I felt so irritated at the fact that I knew about virtually every moment that would have otherwise been a surprise.
    Sure, I could just avoid the trailers and TV spots. But I don't have that kind of self control. I watched EVERYTHING before The Dark Knight came out and there was still many surprises when I went and saw the film.

    I'm glad the film is getting a sequel, even though I personally wasn't a fan.

    I wish the WB would do like DC has done with the comics for decades, have different versions of Batman available. Batman is DC's biggest seller, but he's also the most divided among the fan base. They could have a darker toned solo movie series with one creative team, and a different more fantastical universe with Meta-beings. This way they could introduce Man-Bat, Clayface, Lazarus Pits, etc....

    I hope it's decent. This movie was good and to be fair was better than the batman before Nolans trilogy but I don't think it moved the needle to move past the crap DC has gotten. Also not hitting a billion stinks.

    hopefully in the sequel:

    - they don't include Riddler or the Joker.
    - use a villain we haven't seen before in other Batman films or at least haven't seen much of.
    - longer fight sequences.
    - a fight scene that can hold a candle to Batfleck's warehouse fight.
