Henry Cavill discusses his time and Superman and what he hopes to still do

The question still remains if we will ever see Henry Cavill suit up as Superman once again, but the actor still clearly has some ideas about what he would like to do next.

In a retrospective of his career with GQ, Cavill talks about where he would like to take the character of Superman, and also goes into detail about where he felt Man of Steel took him.

Rumors continue to circulate about Cavill's possible return to the role, but nothing official has been announced. Some rumors have pointed to cameos in both Black Adam and The Flash, but both of those remain to be confirmed.

Cavill will next be seen in The Witcher season 2 on Netflix on Dec. 17.

I know people want to see him as Superman again, and while I don't personally like him in the role (He may well be capable, but I haven't seen him show what I want from a Superman yet...the theatrical cut of JL was too far in one direction, and BvS and MoS were too far in the opposite direction), I can't help but just want a full reboot.

Ideally, I'd like to see a Superman in his mid - late 20's who hasn't been Superman for very long, maybe just a few years, and who is still making his name as a journalist at the Daily Planet.

If Cavill is to have another go, ideally it would be as a Kingdom Come type superman (not an adaptation of the story). I've said this from the start. DC should do a proper crisis evenent, because the meta narrative of the crisis events was how the universe was too dark and grim, and survivors from the 'nicer' universe wanted to restore things. So, DC could invert that, and have an opportunity to do some really amazing meta commentary about the DCEU as a whole.

But, that won't happen. We'll just get Flash which will lazily make things part of the multiverse and then keep getting standalone movies that are wholly incongruent with each other yet tangentially connected.

He has the right ideas on the character and where to go. If they can make something out of Aquaman and WW's dicey introductions, they should be able to work on this version of Superman. He was in a very fertile story-telling position by the end of Justice League ( both versions). He died, and came back. The movie can easily explore him getting back into a groove, his job ( this film can simply skip/skim/not dwell over the minutiae of past films like Aquaman's solo film), making actual friends ( retconned Jimmy Olsen would be a good idea), and possibly PTSD over actually dying ( it was a decent plot point in Iron Man 3 and Tony only nearly died, compared to Clark who ACTUALLY went down).Plenty of villains ( not wacky Duck Lex) to use like Intergang and Metallo, etc. They could consider making it about Lois giving birth ( possible rom com aspects). Lots of avenues, so long as they keep it less heavy, more fun and more like the comics ( classic ones).

I really like your ideas here (especially Jimmy).
One way they could get around Clark still being alive is by Bruce introducing him to Martian Manhunter (who will already be willing to help him), and he can simply morph into Clark or Supes to show them both in the same place at the same time. Maybe Clark can use temporary amnesia from a blow to the head during the Doomsday event to explain where he's been instead of dead. Hell, maybe for some bromance, Bruce has already planned all this out.
Actually, J'onn can even play into the PTSD coping side of the story with his abilities as a super-empath.

  I like that, but there was an open casket funeral attended by several friends and coworkers for Clark. So maybe Manhunter has ability to wipe that memory from all their minds? Apologies, but I’m not sure of the extent of his telepathic abilities.

      What’s ironic is I read Identity Crisis not too long ago and I honestly don’t remember that. Too much weed and alcohol in my 20’s I guess. My recall is not what it used to be. If I was at Clark’s funeral, Manhunter wouldn’t even need to wipe my mind.
      But you are 100% correct. It should be an issue for an empath like J’onnz. Doesn’t seem like it fits his character. Snyder making him a US Government official in charge of National Defense probably changes his moral code from what we are used to seeing, unfortunately. But in all honesty, I’m not a fan of the character on film. Too many powers, too weird backstory, too derivative of other JL members. I’d rather see him only in comics and cartoons.

  They worked on the J'onn/Clark visitor from a strange world bromance in Man of Tommorow, and while that film had some ups and downs, that relationship worked well. Plus there are no plans for this character anyway in the movies, so why not break it out in real life? Plus they've already worked together when he was Swanwick.
  Cavill Superman talking to a shrink. That would be very cool. Jimmy is very important in that this version literally has no human friends. I'd like to see Clark interact more with staff at the DP.

Zack Snyder’s three films work best as a separate, standalone trilogy like The Dark Knight Trilogy. I love Zack Snyder’s trilogy, but I don’t and never have liked the Snyder films as a foundation for a shared universe. The Snyderverse is complete and I think a hard reboot is what is needed. Start from scratch, WB.

      Snyder was giving a chance to end his story but instead he doubled down on setting up films he full well knew were never going to happen. Its basically like a showrunner finding out his show has been axed, being told he can still finish the rest of the season but instead of filming and writing an ending he instead stills go for the planned cliffhanger ending and many plots still open.
      Snyder knew exactly what he was doing and he knows how to bait and use his fanbase, he has no respect for you because he's a narcissist. Look at that recent tweet he's done what's got his fanbase all wet because he gave no context and knew it would get them all hype for nothing. If he had respect for his cult he would have filmed an ending, cut out the set up and made it complete his "story".

      From his point of view I understand why he would leave a window open for a continuation for his JL story, but from our point of view it's really frustrating to get all the teases he gives out knowing they'll never come to fruition. It also doesn't help that he basically layed out all his plans for said continuation, so what studio would want to make a movie that everyone knows how it will play out. I still think the best way to go is a comic book mini series to finish it off. Small investment, he can go nuts with it and you sell some comic books. I'm pretty sure even people who haven't picked up a comic book in their life would just eat this up.

It is wholly ridiculous that we still are yet to have a standalone Superman sequel to MoS. As others have mentioned, both versions of Justice League have left Superman in the ideal position for a return. He’s been resurrected and you could have the “optimistic” Superman that everybody including myself wants. It doesn’t even need to be ZS directing it. WB are clearly not interested under this current regime, Christopher McQuarrie, coming off of the massive success of the MI franchise had pitched a standalone Superman story to WB with Henry Cavill and they passed on it a couple of years ago and mentioned how they deserve everything they get. As I’ve said a few times, hopefully the Discovery takeover will make some sense of the mess the DCEU is currently in. The Flash teaser looked a mess in all honesty, WW is in dire straits, The Suicide Squad was a massive bomb, Shazam sequel isn’t gonna make bank, Aquaman 2 is a flip of the coin as to whether it will be successful or not, the only truly exciting thing in the horizon is The Batman!

If we are talking financially then spending $400 million on a Superman movie is not a smart thing to do.Cavill was also asking for more money.MOS was released after dark knight trilogy and it still only made $43 million in profit.It won't make a bigger one now.
The Suicide Squad flopped cause of it being rated-r and high cost.First trailer was also underwhelming and they limited it's audience by making it age restricted.I suspect that Gunn was behind that first trailer.Listening to director is not always a good thing.

WB wanted and expected Avengers numbers because well the first film starring Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman should have easily made done that and more, in fact going by its opening weekend it was certain but then that 2nd week drop happened. MoS and BvS made profit sure but not a lot and certainly not enough to justify the cost of the films and the marketing budget, no wonder WB got twitchy especially when the last two films to star Batman in live action made over a billion.

      $120 mil in dvd/blu ray sales is nothing to sneeze at though. And I question if Deadline accounts for cross promotion and product placement kickbacks. Zack’s films often have scenes that feel like commercials. BMW, Under Armor, IHOP, 7-11, and Sears come to mind. But I’m sure I’m missing more. Those are often multimillion dollar deals. Film accountants are also excellent at hiding and fudging numbers. So we never really know exact profits.

Shannon's Zod is one of the best villains in the cbms. MOS has reignited the passion for Superman around the globe. Anyone with brains can understand that WB has failed pathetically to build a cohesive universe like Marvel/Disney by avoiding to make a proper sequel to Man of Steel and few solo movies of other DC heroes before rushing BVS. Zack Snyder was still successful to build an epic universe, but WB executives are real doofus in trying to change the course. Shazam, WW84, The Suicide squad has all been mediocre to crap. If WB executives were creative and smart enough, DCU would have given run to Marvel for their money, not the other way around.     I think a lot of fans want to see Cavill come back just with a more relaxed comic-centric take. And yes, I've seen fans of many backgrounds, Snyder fans or not who like seeing Cavill as Supes. I have to agree. The only film from DC I'm even willing to pay money for is The Batman. It's so much like when Fox refused to give fans the Deadpool they clearly wanted. Reynolds had to literally leak it to fans so that those numbnuts at Fox realized that they could make money if they made fans happy. For me it's literally a no-brainer to give Cavill a shot with a better team behind him. WW84 was pure crap- a clear smudge on GG's version as dissapointing as any questionable Snyder film. Yet those execs green light WW3 in seconds.
What people need to do is to unclench and just realize a) Snyder and Cavill are not the same being. You can have a Cavill Superman movie that doesn't feel like Man of Steel period b) You KNOW people are open to a lighter more comic influenced version given that they have FULLY embraced Hoechlin's version on TV more than any other CW show. Imagine what could be achieved IN FILM with a more established comic centric version with THIS GUY in the suit ( i.e. no more navel gazing about what to do, no fights where thousands get killed, maybe use more of the classic supporting cast like TAS did).

She's certainly no better an actor than Cavill. I think Cavill's in the same boat. All his version needs is a good script writer and director. He understands the character ( from what I'm hearing him say) and he knows they need to lighten it up. I really think they can continue with his version and draw audiences in with some clever writing and something that shows this is the up looking farmboy/folkhero version.

Not a single Marvel Studios movie has crossed $440 million on box office so not a good time to worry about box office.Both Wonder Woman 1984 and The Suicide Squad were also released on HBO max and were very easy to pirate.Making The Suicide Squad being rated R also cuts half of it's potential box office and WW84 was released in a worse time.

The Batman, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, Black A, Shazam! Fury of the Gods will be the real box office tests.

    Joker was released 2 years ago. You’re right! They cost significantly less money and made significantly more profit. Not to mention Deadpool at that point was a completely unknown IP to general audiences.

      Both Joker and Deadpool offered something unique to the audience so it's rating did not stop it the audience.The Suicide Squad was a great movie but it was another comicbook movie.Making it rated-r and big budget is just foolish and it was destined to lose money.
      B/W, Suicide Squad 2016 is not remember in good words.It made money but it is remembered as garbage by general audience.It's follow-ups will have to bear the burnt.

      I love Blade Runner 2049 and adore Edge Of Tomorrow.Them not doing good at box office does not stop me from loving them.The suicide squad was a great movie and that's what matters most to me.

The Batman is going to make money regardless based on name recognition alone, same as what happened with BvS. Unlike that rotten tomato though, I doubt The Batman will have a record setting second week drop, because word of mouth will be good for the film, as it has been based on test screenings.

    That's the point though, we could make an incredible Superman movie for $100 mill also, it doesn't have to be close to $400 million. The budget for Captain Marvel was $150 million and look what they managed. Chronicle and Brightburn had budgets of $12 million and we're both better movies than any Superman stuff Cavill has been in.

      Still though despite it's flaws, I think it still shows we could do a good Superman movie for the same budget.

I think Spider-Man is the real test, the hype levels seem Endgame like. Its taking 2nd The Batman trailer to now to reach 34m views on Youtube, No Way Home reached more then that in 3 days and is now at 40m+ views. If any film can reach the 1B mark its NWH.

  Even Marvel movies are struggling at box office so not a good time to worry about it.Marvel latest movie Eternals will fail to cross $370 million mark at box office and it didn't even have to worry about streaming simultaneous release or R-rating.Black Widow who was last seen in a $2 billion dollar+ movie and is one of the most recognizable characters in the world also failed to bring people to cinema.B/W, Disney is already working on Scarlett Johansson next Marvel project despite Black Widow lackluster box office performance

I have to say that despite all of the circumstances, The Suicide Squad was a very clear box-office flop.
Especially after the success of films like Dune, The Conjuring 3 and GvK.
Hell, even Halloween Kills had a bigger opening then TSS, despite also bieng Rated R and bieng released on streaming the same day.
But in my opinion that had more to do with problems related to the movie and less with the DCEU as a whole.
I definitely think the future movies will be way more successful.
Atleast Aquaman 2 is sure fire success in my opinion.

What I find interesting is that unlike many others Henry isn't particularly fond of the direction Zack Snyder wanted to take Superman.

In fact he has said that Joss Whedons take on Superman in the 2017 version of Justice League is exactly what he wanted Superman to be instead of the dark, Injustice-style, brutal, black suit and eventually lost to Anti-Life Superman that Snyder ultimately had in mind for his JL films.

It's probably not a coincidence that Henry did not return for any reshoots or audio recording for the Snyder Cut.

I think one thing to consider here is that regardless of how detrators may want to devalue the potential of Cavill's Superman returning, it's not like he's going out of style or getting less popular. If anything he's rising. He's made the right plays and is gaining fans- you think that the millions of people who are watching him in the Witcher ( and who have clearly accepted him in that role) WON'T consider wanting to see thier boy suit up as Superman again? The Internet literally stops when there's a whiff of news on him possibly returning in the role- the interest is still there in my opinion. All they have to do is suck it up, and deliver.

Love hearing Cavill talk about Superman.

He completely gets it, completely wants to make things right and better, and never wanted to go down that dark road that Snyder put him on without shedding some light first. He is still passionate to continue on and make the role of great and there is nobody better suited to do it than him. He's been held back long enough and he is so diplomatic but direct to move the narrative in a great direction for everyone to take notice and continue the possibility for more to happen with Supes. Very formal and very smart with his choice of words.

And like he said, it can be done, especially with Flashpoint coming up as we all know. Great writing and an understanding of how things can move forward properly will keep all of that going with ease, if the biased, egotistical, DC executive nitwits are removed like they should be or decide to get with the program.

That being said, either way, I STILL want them removed - for their corruption, their ego, for all they let slide and for their lack of vision that has held us back for too long.
