J.K. Simmons in talks to reprise Commissioner Gordon for Batgirl movie

According to a new report, J.K. Simmons is in talks to reprise the role of Commissioner Gordon in the upcoming Batgirl movie on HBO Max.

The Hollywood Reporter has shared the news that Simmons is in talks to appear in Batgirl. Simmons first appeared in the role in 2017's Justice League, and then appeared again in 2021's Zack Snyder's Justice League.

The report did not indicate how far into negotiations the talks are at this point.

The Batgirl project seems to be a priority at HBO Max right now with Leslie Grace having nabbed the role on July 21. Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah will direct the film from a script by Christina Hodson (Bumblebee, Birds of Prey).

No release date has been announced for Batgirl as of yet.

      Those films don’t carry the weight of a Batman, Superman(Main), or Justice League. They can’t swing and miss on those properties, especially after Zack’s divisive take and the meddling greedy execs caused such a rocky start last time. Look how long Reeves took just to get his script right, and he still got notes. Black Adam isn’t even that well known and it took over a decade. I promise you that JL, Batman, and Superman films/appearances are coming. We just might need to wait a lil bit longer, but at least there’s a better chance of getting it done right.

But I also just find it unbelievable that the characters who are most prominent, most loved, most marketable, most important to build a shared universe around, and easiest to tell stories about could be put on the shelf without a peep for so long, especially when we are getting not one but two black versions of Superman, a Supergirl, a Batgirl, and other-universe Batmen at the same time... I hope you're right, though. They've done a lot to make me lose faith...

      No if I remember right it was Grace Randolph, and then what she was saying seemed to be getting at least partially confirmed by that first THR report announcing Keaton's involvement with Flash. Then the writer of that article backtracked. But things haven't veered far from when we were all thinking in horror that Randolph was right.

      If I remember correctly, the idea that Keaton was only signing on if he got multiple movies, that he would be training Batgirl, and that Batgirl would be filling the role of Batman in the Trinity were all sort of intermixed. Perhaps the presence of Gordon is a good sign against that? Not necessarily, though. Or maybe the stories we were hearing before were only partially true...

Would Jeremy Irons sign over all Wayne assets to Keaton, a character that shouldn’t exist in that world? What about Keaton’s world? He’s just done with it? I’m not saying it’s impossible, I just doubt it. I think they need the Bruce and Clark characters to continue, even with new actors. Just my opinion.

They need to build towards Batman Beyond not just have Keaton show up in The Flash and then after it go ahead and do Beyond. They are rushing in movies with multiple versions of characters it seems without properly setting up the multiverse concept. Its gonna be messy. The MCU version might turn out just as messy but least they took the time to build up to it and introduce it properly.

How exactly are we getting "Batfleck" except with a different actor? that makes no sense whatsoever. Keaton is continuing as the DCEU Batman. Batfleck is done and over with. Besides, they retained Davis for Suicide Squad but didn't reuse Deadshot.

  Unless they kill him off screen, Deadshot still exists in DCEU, they just didn’t use him for this film because of Smith’s schedule conflicts.
  The character established by Affleck will continue is my hypothesis, but possibly with different actor if Ben is done. MCU continued the Norton version of Hulk character with Ruffalo. They didn’t bring back Bana or Bill Bixby version or create new version, they just had Ruffalo continue in Norton’s place. So a Bruce Wayne with 20+ years experience as Batman alongside Jeremy Irons and JK Simmons. I don’t see them making a Bruce from a different universe who is older than Gordon and Alfred and no experience with them or right to that Universe’s Bruce Wayne funds all of sudden being the Batman for that universe. And I don’t see them killing off Batfleck(established Bruce from BvS and JL) in Flash film. Just my thoughts based on this casting decision. Feels like the character will continue now.

The fact that they gave him a new Batsuit and Batcycle for this movie bodes well, I think.       It’s ironic that you and I have kinda traded positions on this over the years. Yes, there was an interview years ago where Affleck described Flashpoint as a way for him to transition out of the role. I still think that transition can simply be a post credit scene of Barry in Batcave asking new actor, “It is Bruce, right?...”
      I also now think this casting decision gives credit to your previous opinion that the Affleck film/series will be announced soon for HBOMax. I think this can happen even with a different actor, but it’s also possible Ben had another Brett Favre change of heart. Maybe he is having fun in the role and is ready to continue with less pressure and personal issues weighing him down. 🤞🏼

    I think your right Affleck's Batman will continue even if Ben himself is not in the role. My guess either barry messes with the timeline and de-ages Bens Bruce, thus we get a younger actor or we simply get a similar aged actor stepping in for Affleck. Like the Norton/Rufflo swap mentioned below.

SO.... This may be a *huge* band-aid for me. Wow!! Hope they get him and make it amazing. Would be a great way to expand Ben's Batman as well. Gobs of potential. JK was so good in the brief bit he was in Justice League, perfect fit. He's just great period.

Still, I wish it felt like they were taking the project more seriously. Direct-to-stream to me feels like they're not putting the same oomph into it as they would with a theater release because the property is less of a big deal to them.

I also am not getting Barbara vibes from the actress they picked so far, but maybe she'll surprise me.

If JK's in this, I will give it a shot regardless of any nitpicks. :) Maybe he's a sign they're taking it more seriously than I thought.

      The only thing I'd add to that list is the father/daughter chemistry they have with their specific personalities. Gotta do it like BTAS. The episode 'Over the Edge' will always be with me.
      I adore the way Jim was portrayed by the end there. It made me love him as a character, and I think JK is exactly right for that - for both versions depicted in the episode, really.

    Imagine being so arrogant as to assume that someone voicing a complaint is doing so only out of spite. It's almost as bad as denying things for which there is clear evidence or telling people their opinions are 'objectively wrong'. Everyone here knows you're hardly a Batman fan and certainly have never read any comics, you're in no position to correct anyone on anything unless it's some Snyder crap, and even then you can't be trusted. Simmon's workout photos were nothing to do with JL and the results were not visible in the film. For someone that lies and claims to work in lit, you should work to understand what hyperbole is.
    In any event, I didn't like that version of Gordon and it had nothing to do with Snyder....I don't object to such a brief scene, even he couldn't screw it up. No, I just don't like the floppy hat and older depiction. I prefer a Gordon more reminiscent of TAS, old, but still gruff and very capable of action, and i didn't get that vibe from him in the film.
    Oh, and you don't need to reply. All your reply is going to be doing is trying to dissect mine so you can try and prove it's 'objectively wrong' because any time someone makes a criticism of your beloved universe, you feel the need to engage them to defend it so that feel at peace, the threat defeated. Once you write your nonsense answer to your satisfaction (much as a schizo may be satisfied with a final draft of one of his theories), you then have the audacity to tell people (me in this case) they are objectively wrong. When all I stated was that I personally didn't like the depiction of Gordon in JLUE. That's it.

Don't get me wrong, I freaking LOVE JK Simmons... but how many different universes, even using the same freaking actors, are they going to do?

Now if this actually means that Batgirl is part of the DCEU, then I'm completely fine with it and honestly stoked as heck. Because maybe that means we can still have Affleck as Batman, or at least Bruce Wayne (and it's not that I want Affleck back, it's just that I would hate to see ANOTHER actor play a different version). But I'm pretty sure they've already confirmed it's not part of the DCEU.

So in other words, we have the main DCEU. We have Reeves' solo movie (Earth 2 I think they're calling it). Then we also have Keaton back. Then there's the Snyderverse JL. And now we also have this Batgirl universe, which just so happens to have the same Jim Gordon? DC and WB are making such a gigantic mess of things, it's honestly impressive at this point.

This "multiverse" idea is stupid to be honest and it feels WB are half arsing it unlike Marvel what made an entire show setting it up and will have at least two upcoming films dealing with it. Feige even revealed him and Marvel Studios had a big meeting explaining the rules of the Multiverse, what they can and can't do and what the plans are going forward. WB is just using it as an excuse to have multiple versions of the same character running around and it feels so poorly thought out,

    Marvel actually listen to their fans too it seems. There was a huge outcry to have Charlie Cox be saved as Daredevil and added to the mcu properly and it seems Feige an Co did just that. The whole Netflix characters should be saved(except maybe Iron Fist) in my opinion.

      Charlie Cox is all but confirmed to appear in Spiderman 3, as Matt Murdock. Apparently only as a lawyer. He won't suit up as Daredevil until his next appearance.

      I said its all "but" confirmed. Nothing officially but he has been spotted close to the filming location and there have been leaks apparently saying he does appear in the film. I for one believe it.

      Except that it has not been "all but" anything. There've been no pictures or proof of him on set. So far, it's all been a bunch of "he said, she said". Until I physically see him in NWH, nothing has been confirmed.

      I've been hearing these "Daredevil to join the MCU rumors" as far back as when Endgame came out, and so far, they have all been proven wrong.

      If there was proof it wouldn't be a rumour it would be fact. However the rumours about Charlie Cox have come thick and fast, especially from the set of NWH. Some site just report rumours willy nilly for click bait but this rumour does seem to have some credibility to it. As such i think its going to turn out to be true.

WB needs to make up their mind already , are y’all keeping the DCEU or not. If they are great if they not they can use HBO Max and continue it their.   I chuckled at this, as ironically,its been contributing factor thats been detrimental to the success of the DCEU so far. Not the only factor but a big one. WB were so eager to chase MCU Box Office numbers they rushed things and fumbled the football so many times. If they had done a similar gameplan to Marvel and built a steadily expanding, well planned out, cinematic universe, then i believe the DCEU would actually be rivalling Marvel not eating its dust.

WB/DC executives are fools. I agree with you. At this rate, let's see the next Snyder Justice League because it was a massive success and continues expanding the universe and utilizing the characters. We'll get more Martian, the creation of the Legion of Doom, more Deathstroke, we'll see the birth of the Hall of Justice, more heroes, the epic savage war with Darkseid & Apokolips, nothing but greatness.
Let Snyder make that film to bring the Snyderverse to an end and defeat Darkseid, and then we reset all of it with a Flashpoint just like the animated film, Justice League Apokolips War. Then, they can do solo films, revamp the characters, whatever goofy nonsensical crap they're doing right now. None of this can be done with DC's current executives like Walter Hamada & others holding it all back and doing whatever they're doing now if someone or some company doesn't come over the top and topple them to change the game. They have proven time and again they have no idea what they're doing with these properties to build the best continuity and profit. They are throwing things to the wall and seeing what sticks. The only reason they aren't all fired is because they do the hiring and they're the ones in control.
I can only hope Discovery will care enough to force their hand or maybe Dwayne Johnson has enough growing influence as he seems to hint at with him wanting to battle Superman for years now, and it will have a domino effect on the outcome of the DCU where other changes will happen as a result of it. All lofty thinking at this point.

If they are carrying over the characters from the Snyderverse then they may as well continue the story threads he planted. He doesn't personally need to be involved for this to happen either. It can thrive without him if thats what they want to do.
  I just wish it was more clear what the gameplan and end goal is with these movies. I want a connected fully functioning DC cinematic universe more than anything.

    Exactly. I wish they had a real plan right now. It just seems they want to establish a multiverse (through Flashpoint) to do whatever films they want to do. But their wanting to use established characters in one area and rejections of characters in other areas makes everything look like a hot mess when it doesn't need to be. They show time and again they really don't care about these properties one bit and they just aim to profit anyway they see fit without structure.

    Yup, I know about his affiliation with Netflix. Who knows what will happen. Only way I see him coming back is if Discovery or AT&T ends up getting influence in WB as majority shareholders and demand Snyder back to finish the work, believing there is more profit to gain with him than without him. But I don't know if they have access to that kind of leverage right now or at all. I don't care too much at this point if Snyder comes back, but I hate the fact DC can't live up to its potential with leaders like this around and guys like Ray Fisher & Henry Cavill are getting the short end of the stick. And I guess might as well throw in Snyder too when its his casting and part in this that they're still running with among the disjointed DC Universe they are choosing to create.

      Coat and mustache are iconic, but the hat is not, and Simmons didn't look that close to the comics even without the hat imo. Oldman was way, way, way closer, so the people saying Simmons look was perfect must have weird thoughts about Oldman since they look very different.

      Really? Oldman had the tache but never really the trenchcoat. Oldman is a fantastic actor though and maybe thats why people hold his Gordon so high. Simmons never really got a chance to show his true potential in the role. I thought he definitely pulled off the look even walkin through the station when just in the suit.

      That's true he never had the trenchcoat, but I would take Oldman without trench over Simmons with hat any day of the week. I agree Simmons didn't really get a chance to flesh out the role, but for me it just wasn't the look. The again, most of the time it's hard to cast someone that will be how the majority imagined them to be.

      I get what you're getting at but my critique is slightly different regarding the mustache and trenchcoat. For me, it leans more to JK himself. To me, there are simply better looking actors out there for the role that suit Gordon. JK to me looks too old for the part than I'd want Gordon to look personally and he makes Gordon look like a breath away from retirement at any given moment. And to me, that's where the hat and trenchcoat didn't seem to help his image.
      It's not to say that this version of Gordon hasn't been in the game just as long as Batfleck & he is actually supposed to be up in age. But there are actors the same age as JK in real life and in the same age range that look a bit tighter in the face & simply look better for the part. I'd prefer a more rugged, vintage-looking Gordon, than a Gordon in JK that looks like he'd be perfectly comfortable in a rocking chair.

      He seemed old, weary and non-assertive. I get this is an older Gordon, but it wasn't a performance I cared for. When he talked to his officers (when they show him the sketch) he seems to be asking for help rather than commanding. Normally in the comics when Gordon gets that old he retires.

      I agree he didn’t feel like Gordon to me either. I don’t think he really prepared or sank his teeth into the role yet. This film might allow him to do a lot more and hopefully bring out the full Gordon. Oldman is the only live action version to come close so far, even though they ruined him in DKR. His characterization in first two films was phenomenal.

      Agree completely with everything you said. The thing is Gordon isn't even a character that's hard to get right. I think part of it for me is that Gordon should always seem 'gruff', and Simmons was anything but.
