It began as a video game, hinged on a simple concept: what would happen if Superman lost everything, and acted out on his rage? Injustice: Gods Among Us definitely had a controversial core concept, but it was enough to create a fighting game that allowed players to pit DC’s heroes and villains against each other.
This led to a comic series written by Tom Taylor, which took the core idea of the game and expanded on it, really exploring Superman’s slow slide into authoritarianism and how the rest of the DC Universe responded to his change. Truly, it was a book that ended up being more heartfelt than anyone expected, making you at least empathize with every single character caught up in the story.
It also led to Lobo getting a Green Lantern ring, which is one of the most inspired decisions to ever grace the comics page.
Now, Injustice will be adapted as an animated film, as part of Warner Bros. Home Entertainment’s successful slate of DC Comics films. While plot details are relatively scarce at the moment, so we don’t know how close the movie will hew to the storyline from the game and comics, the massive voice cast has been announced. Per an exclusive in The Hollywood Reporter, the cast list is as follows:
Justin Hartley as Superman, Anson Mount as Batman, Laura Bailey as Lois Lane and Rama Kushna, Zach Callison as Damian and Jimmy Olsen, Brian T. Delaney as Green Lantern, Brandon Michael Hall as Cyborg, Edwin Hodge as Mr. Terrific and Killer Croc, Oliver Hudson as Plastic Man, Gillian Jacobs as Harley Quinn, Yuri Lowenthal as Mirror Master, Flash and Shazam, Derek Phillips as Nightwing and Aquaman, Kevin Pollak as Joker and Jonathan Kent, Anika Noni Rose as Catwoman, Reid Scott as Green Arrow and Victor Zsasz, Faran Tahir as Ra’s al Ghul, Fred Tatasciore as Captain Atom, Janet Varney as Wonder Woman, and Andrew Morgado as Mirror Master Soldier.
Lots of inspired choices here. Anson Mount seems like a great fit for Batman, and Gillian Jacobs as Harley is so perfect that it’s kind of insane that it hasn’t happened yet (though my pal Justin from Let’s Go! Comic Show called this a while back). Plus, the mere fact that Plastic Man will be included in the story is cause for celebration.
Matt Peters will direct the film, with a script from Ernie Altbecker. Rick Morales and Jim Krieg are listed as Producers, while Sam Register is an Executive Producer.
