Hidden with a feature about the most powerful lawyers in Hollywood, it has been revealed that Todd Phillips has signed on co-write a second Joker film.

The Hollywood Reporter ran a feature on Hollywood's Most Powerful Lawyers, within the blurb for Todd Phillips' lawyer was the revelation that he "struck a deal to co-write the next Joker installment."

Client Zack Snyder is back in action with his Justice League cut on HBO Max and the Netflix zombie flick Army of the Dead. Todd Phillips struck a deal to co-write the next Joker installment, while Amy Poehler is booming in the DIY space with Making It and planned spinoff Backing It. Paul Feig is directing the star-packed School for Good and Evil at Netflix, while J.A. Bayona has begun shooting Amazon’s high-profile Lord of the Rings series.

We feel due to the nature of this piece that not too much can be read into the word "installment." It could be a stand-in for "sequel," or it could mean the films could be an anthology. We simply don't know at this point. But what we do know is that some form of second Joker film is on the way.

Considering Joker won multiple awards, and took in over $1 billion at the box office, it is not at all surprising that Warner Bros. wants another film starring the Clown Prince of Crime.

We'll be keeping a close eye out for more information.

Interesting if true. I really hope they don't try and fold this Joker into a bigger universe. IMO it was barely a Joker movie as it was.

100%. I think BvS and Damian Wayne are the only things we disagree on. Lol

I think thats because the way the first movie was developed and designed. If indeed the theory is true and the first film occurred pretty much mostly in Arthurs head, then it blows the doors wide open for how they can approach the sequel.

We could get a full on comic accurate Joker let loose in the sequel, one that could easily fold in Pattinsons Batman world or future DCEU if needed. Really depends on how they choose to approach it i think.

        That's true, I'd still just rather they....not.

Well at least Phoenix is a competent actor in the role. The possible alternative with WB's current direction is the bext version to be a coloured, transitioning joker. I'm kidding (kind of) but the point is, Phoenix could be a fantastic comic joker if given the material. Not to say someone else couldn't fill the shoe I'm just cautious of the direction they could choose to go.

I agree completely. I'm just hoping for good news from FanDome at this point. I'm cautiously hopeful.

Joker 2? Think up something new Hollywood. This is perfect as a one-and-done. You have all of DC's material at your fingertips and you're going back to old material. C'mon.

I know I know.... some folks disagree and would love to see a sequel. But this is unnecessary and lazy in my book. This thing won Oscar, Joaquin gave a top-notch performance, DC got a massive winner out of this. Let it go and move on with other projects. Frankly, I'm annoyed by the news. I know others are excited. But hey that's life. Can't please everyone. I'm sure y'all will enjoy it. Even if I go to see it, it won't change the fact I think it's unnecessary. Same way BoP was. We can be expanding the universe in better ways if nothing else than going back to a finished work of art to see what we can squeeze out of it as if a box office smash, megabucks, accolades and an Oscar wasn't enough. SMH.

Hollywood need fresh ideas and fresher executives.

I liked the film, I thought it was an interesting take on an Elseworld Joker, but I don't really think it needs a sequel or a franchise. Not everything has to come in trilogies.

When you think about it, WB didn't even want Joker movie in the first place, only invested half of the $55M budget lol

Hopefully he's directing again as well. Would very interesting to see how Phoenix is as a full on Joker with no trace of Arthur left, would also be interesting to see if they decided to tie in this in with The Batman.

Am I really the only one here who thinks this is completely unnecessary? Some movies just don't need sequels. Like Inception for example. Has an open ending, but does not need a sequel. I feel Joker is the same thing.

The entire Joker movie, for better or worse, was a first act of a regular movie.
I can't imagine what they would do for Joker 2 though, with all the trouble it caused with the first one.

While i agree Inception does not need a movie, it has a lot of potential as a spin off series or even as a computer game could be really cool.

I don’t mind this idea. If it’s an anthology series, the second Joker can be another actor in another time with a totally separate narrative. I’m all for it. Maybe pre-post stock market crash 20s, or near future like 2090. It would be very cool to see him team up with another notable supervillain in that time just to see what they all look like in the past or future.

WHY!? It was a proper standalone movie that clearly stated at the end that IT WAS THE END!!

How much money was Todd Philips given to sell his integrity to ruin his first movie?

    1. Hunter Zolomon Avatar

Blade Runner never needed a sequel and we ended up with a film what may surpass the original. Both Phillips and Phoenix have expressed interest in more since the first released so clearly this is something what has been talked and planned for a while now.

Then it will be a souless follow up without a meaning.

Because after you have established a finite ending, being forced to continue after it because you were paid to makes it exactly that.

          2. Hunter Zolomon Avatar

But they were open to sequels when the film was released, Phoenix an actor who never does sequels said he was open to it and think there's stories left to tell with the character.

Wanna know a film what never needed sequel but got one? Alien, that never needed another one yet Aliens ended up being one of the best films ever made. Blade Runner never needed a sequel, The Terminator never needed a sequel, The Godfather never needed a sequel. Fact is if they have ideas to make a compelling sequel and don't phone it in then Joker Part 2 could be just as good if not better.

BR49 was indeed fantastic... but the reason that movie worked is b/c it's basically almost a standalone movie and was made 30-something years after the original. If Scott pumped out a sequel shortly after the first one, it probably would've sucked.

I also don't think Phillips is anywhere near the director that Denis Villeneuve is. Phillips has kinda been hit or miss. Maybe I'm just not that excited about this b/c I didn't really "love" Joker that much tbh. Thought it was okay. But nothing incredible.

Surprised to hear this is getting a sequel after it was such a self contained story. Given the amount of money the first one made and also the critical acclaim it received, its not all that strange to see a sequel in the works.

If it becomes part of the DCEU multiverse or folds into Pattinsons Batman world, it could be very interesting.

Dune is reportedly going to the Venice Film Festival. This is the same play that got Joker to the Oscars.

Another Joker should be a challenge depending on what exactly a next installment will be about. My theory is that none of the Arthur story ever happenned, so in this case a second part would basically have nothing to do with the first one, so they could either do a Joker in full effect story or go with another origin story (which I doubt). Anyway they do it I hope it doesn't adress anything from the first movie, so everything is still up for interpretation.

I don't know how much details on the matter are out, but I see a possibility where Todd Phillips does not want to do another Joker movie, but Warner desperately wants to cash in on the success of his first one, so he signed this deal to make sure a next installment doesn't screw up his movie.

PS: This "Top Articles" overlay is still blocking the whole screen on mobile.

Which comic book Joker? There are so many interpretations. Why can’t innovation and reinvention come from sources outside of the comics?

You invalidate your answer by excluding a decade in reinterpretation because it doesn’t fit your narrative. Thanks for playing though ;)

Loved me some Joker. But sequels always tend to trend down, in my opinion (think WW84 & Jack Reacher 2).

Hopefully they can buck the trend.

Joker should not have a sequel. Philips' idea of a DC Black Label of movies where they can explore other movies along the same vein as Joker was is a good one, though.
