The long-range Wonder Woman 1984 box office projections are in, and it's not too surprising that they aren't what they might have been in the pre-coronavirus times.
As the coronavirus continues to rage across the United States, adjustments to the Wonder Woman 1984 box office projections were inevitable. Add in the decision that the film will have a day-and-date debut on HBO Max, and it's fair to say that it is anyone's guess what will actually happen.
The prognosticators over at Box Office Pros have released their numbers and they are projecting an opening weekend between $5M to $15M, and a domestic total of $30M to $60M. There are no numbers on what the global total may be.
To be very clear, a lot of this is guessing at this point. To call this an unprecedented release situation would be an understatement. Between the virus and the decision to release on HBO Max at the same time, and all of this is going to be new territory for everyone.
Even if these projections are accurate, the first inclination would be to say the film is a flop due to the $200 million budget. As consumers, we will probably never truly know if Warner Bros. considers this film a success because there are going to be a lot of factors we simply won't be privy to. How many new subscribers will sign up to HBO Max because of the film? How many will be long-term subscribers? These are all factors Warner Bros. will be measuring by for this project.
A big box office result is always nice to look at, but it is definitely not going to be the deciding factor this time around.
Wonder Woman 1984 will release in theaters and on HBO Max in the U.S. on Dec. 25. Select international locations will see the film released on Dec. 16.
